Where did the time go? Has it been a whole year? It has!
And I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all of your help
through the last year. Your prayers, financial support, in-kind gifts
and time volunteered to help with some of the many things that have to be done,
we are indeed thankful.
However, the day is drawing near, we are looking forward to the holidays
with just a little bit of apprehension. It seems like every year we do not know
until the last minute if we are going to have enough food and finances to have
a successful event. We open our Thanksgiving Banquet to the public, all are
welcome to come and enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. We want to have
enough food prepared for as many as come to have dinner with us. However,
we do not count success by how many we feed but by how many we are given
the opportunity to share the Gospel with—not only at the Chapel service but also
one on one by the staff.
So, I am asking for your help again to supply means (food and financial help)and we will be the outlet or administrator. If it were not for you and the Mission
many people would not have an opportunity to have a Thanksgiving dinner.
Our dinner again will be a part of the “Great Thanksgiving Banquet” that takes
place across the entire United States and sponsored by the local “Gospel Rescue
Missions”.
Below is a list of the things we will need to provide a traditional Thanksgiving
Dinner. But we will also need some volunteer help. Listed in the Director’s
Desk section is a list of volunteer opportunities.

Asking The
Right Questions
“Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to
fish; and you have fed him for a
lifetime” - Author unknown
This thought is the foundation of
the teaching style employed here
at the Anchorage Gospel Rescue
Mission’s Learning Center. Our
students are encouraged not to ask
us how to solve a problem until
they have exhausted all possibleavenues open to them. When
learning a new computer program
like Microsoft Word or Excel it
would be frustrating trying to learn
everything theses programs are
capable of doing. This frustration
can, and often does, lead to giving
up. Therefore we encourage our
students not to try to memorize but
to familiarize.
There was a time in computer
software history when a program
was purchased it came with a
complete set of user manuals. In
the case of software suites like
Microsoft Of fice or Lotus Smart
Suite this meant eight to ten books
with all the information needed to
take full advantage of the programscapabilities and functions. The
software companies finally came
to the realization they could save
money by packaging these same
manuals in the helpfiles rather then
have them printed in book form.
The advantage for the end user is
no matter where in the world they
are the user manuals are available
to them.
The idea then is to teach the
student the process of finding the
information needed to complete
the required task. This sounds
easier than it is. Extracting
information from the help files
can be confusing. The user has to
be specific in their request. “They
have to ask the right question!”
Once the procedure is located the
help files leads the student to their
goal by providing step-by-step
instructions. Therefore the student
only needs to be familiar with
what the programs capabilities are
rather than how to do everything.
The student gets no assistance
until they have tried every possible
combination they can come up
with of asking the computer forthe needed information.
As an instructor I will not b
with them beyond their Learnin
Center experience therefore the
cannot be allowed to get in th
habit of relying on me to answ
their questions. The help files w
be with them no matter where the
are so they are encouraged to re
on their learned ability in askinthe computer how to accomplish
specific task.
Our hope reaches beyond th
Learning Center. The lesson w
are teaching is you don’t hav
to know how to deal with eve
situation you’ll face in life. Th
important skill is to know ho
to find and implement a solutio
to the problem with the resourcavailable to you at the time. Askin
the right questions can make th
process less frustrating.

The Lie:
I Have Arrived!
When dealing with addiction,
believing this lie “I have arrived”
can be fatal.
The men who come into the
“ NewLife” Recovery Program
are usually at the end of their
rope. They have either tried to
conquer their addiction in their
own strength or have tried to
live a functional life with their
addiction. Once they realize all
hope is gone and the battle islost, they come to the Anchorage
Gospel Rescue Mission, often
broken physically and always
broken spiritually.
The peace and love they
experience in the “ NewLife”
Recovery Program brings
healing to their bodies and
souls. As they learn aboutGod’s forgiveness, His grace
and His mercy their hope gets
rekindled:
“Maybe I can get out of this cycle
of addiction”! “Maybe there is
hope for a normal life!”
Through the workshops and
bible classes the men begin to
experience what it feels like to
fellowship with Jesus. Through
this fellowship a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ
begins to form. During the year
they grow stronger physically
and spiritually and they begin
to realize their lives can be
different. This time, through
the strength of Christ, they can
handle the world.
One of the most tragic events
witnessed by the staff is when
some of the men leave the
Program early confident they
have the world by the tail. The
question then becomes whose
tail are they holding onto?
Scripture tells us that Satan is
the prince of this world, and he
is about to take them for a ride.
He is very subtle and lets them
succeed for a while. Everything
is going great and before longthey forget about the biblical
teachings and their relationship
with Jesus Christ. Work, Family
ect… takes first place in their
lives. Once they let down their
guards they become an easy
target for the enemy and he
doesn’t miss.
The “ NewLife” RecoveryProgram is not a silver bullet. It
is not about working thru a one-
year program. It is not about
receiving a certificate because
you complied with all the rules
and you stayed clean for one
year.
The “NewLife” Recovery
Program is all about learning
new life style with Jesus Chri
at its center.
It is about learning to cultiva
a personal relationship wi
our Lord and Savior. It is abo
realizing that we are weak in ou
human condition and alway
subject to fall into Satan’s trap
However, if we let Jesus be th
Guide in our life, we can d
all things in Christ Jesus wh
strengthens us.
I believe the Christian comedia
Ken Davis says it best: “It is
minute by minute, day by da
walk with Jesus Christ.”
There are so many warnings
the New Testament about th
false belief about having arrive
and about the “Destinatio
Sickness” we all face. We nee
to take heed, not grow wear
and lose heart. We need not
faint and we need to keep oueyes on the prize.
My earnest prayer is that Go
gives us his steadfast spirit an
that he will keep us alert to th
traps and snare of the enemy.
pray that we may not falter b
have the strength and the fai
to make that minute by minu
walk with Jesus Christ our trustrength and refuge.
Scripture tells us He who is
you is greater than he who is
the world.” (1 John 4:4) That
God’s Promise we need to stan
upon it.

Ask, and it shall be given you;

and he that seeketh findeth; and
to him that knocketh it shall be
opened. Matthew 7:7-8
One of the reasons
I love working at
the Rescue Mission
is I’m surrounded
by people who not
only read and teach
God’s word but
they believe it. One
of the things I don’t
love so much about working at the
Rescue Mission is once one need
is filled there are ten more waiting
to take the title “most pressing”.
As an organization relying solely
on the generosity of our supporters
we find ourselves in the position
of seemingly always having our
hand out asking for something.
We struggle with, “Should we ask
for an item we need?” or “Should
we figure some way to make dowithout it?”
The Rescue Mission has needed
a snow plow for years yet we felt
it wasn’t something we couldn’t
live without. As stewards of your
money and with the ever increasing
cost of snow removal we could no
longer justify the cost. Therefore
we asked and the Lord provided as
he always does.
The Lord used a faithful couple
who will remain anonymous ashis instrument in
providing for our
needs. We here at
the Mission are
grateful for the
blessing this couple
has sent our way.
We were excited
at the prospect of
receiving a used
plow so you could imagine our
surprise to see a brand new plow
donated. Thank you!
It doesn’t stop there! How could
it, after all, the Lord is involved
and he provides abundantly. We
had an article ready to publish in
this month’s newsletter asking for
a new piano for our chapel. The
one we had was used seven daysa week for the last fourteen years
and was ready to retire.
Before we could even ask the Lord
provided the Mission with a new
piano through the generosity of the
congregation at Grace Brethren
Church of Eagle River. Thank
You!

We here at the Anchorage Gospel Rescue Mission continue to be blessed by being able to ministe
to the needs of so many. There are some sincere Christians that don’t see the need of an outreach
the disenfranchised of our community.
Believe me when I say that a broad spectrum of society comes through our doors. It is not
impossible for any one of us to one day be, for any number of reasons, among their numbers.
We should remember the words of our savior who said:
35”for I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger
and you took me in; 36I was naked and you clothed me; I was sick and you visited me; I was in
prison and you came to me.” 37”Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we
see You hungry and fed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38‘When did we see You a stranger an
take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39’or When did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to
You?’ 40“And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did
it to one of the lest of these My brethren, you did it to me.’
Matthew 25:35-4
Want you pray that we would continue to be able to minister to Jesus by helping the wounded
of our community. If the Lord would lead you to assist us in any way we would welcome your
partnership.

We try very hard to have a clear conscience toward
God, but what about toward man.
Bro. Don
a day to be thankful
What Does It Mean To You?
A re you really thankful for the things that God has done fo
you –for all of the blessings He has given you; are you even aw
that they came from God or do you think you have done it on yown? Or, are you too busy to just pause a moment and reflect
what you have and where you are now. Are you thankful for th
little things in life that you just take for granted? What if all o
blessings were stopped—because you never take time to thank
for all of the things that He does for you. When you look at ot
people that are less fortunate than yourself or see a person that
homeless, do you stop and say, “but for the grace of God, there
I”?
Please take time on this Thanksgiving Day and everyday to g
thanks to God. Let us become a thankful people.
We are thankful for you! Each day at the Mission we count ou
blessings as we see how God has touched your heart and you swith us financially, with in-kind gifts and by volunteering to he
God Gives Us MoreThan We Deserve
God gives us more than we deserve
And yet we still complain.
We may frolic in the sunshine,
But we scoff at the rain.
We take for granted many things—
We have so much you see,
That we forget how blessed we are
Because we are so free.
We waste enough to feed the world
For what is poverty
To those who eat three meals a day
and live in luxury?
God gives us more than we deserve—
Enough that we should share
With those less fortunate than we
Who need someone to care.
