Flower Show School Held Nov. 3-5, 2010

Twenty-four students from seven Federated garden clubs attended Course 1 of Flower Show School on Novem-ber 3-5, 2010, at Naples Botanical Garden. The Buehler Auditorium in the Kapnick Center was an excellent, al-beit chilly, meeting space.

Gail Pica was Chairman of the School. Catherine Ware acted as Registrar and Proctor. Mary Pulick graciously prepared and served breakfast and lunch to the group every day. Suzy Valentine from Gulf Coast Garden Club provided all the horticultural exhibits, and Marty Ward and Brenda Norris, Judges from Cape Coral and Ft. Myers, brought designs for the students to judge. Students came from Boca Raton Garden Club (3), Calusa Garden Club on Marco Island (5), Gulf Coast Garden Club (4), Shell Island Garden Club on Sanibel (3) and Naples Garden Club (7). Naples students were Judy Brzoska, Liz Chehayl, Arlene Cluff, Barbara Crossley, Connie Kappus, Mary Raymond and Sondra Quinn. There also was a student from Kentucky and another who is a member of Gardens of the World, a virtual club, which holds all of its meetings on line. Barbara May, immediate past President of National Garden Club, Inc., was the instructor for both Design and Flower Show Procedure. She used Power Point

to give a brief history of American Floral Design showing Asian and European influences, and she illustrated her lessons on Traditional Line and Line-Mass designs with masterfully exe-cuted arrangements. Dale De Feo from the Calusa Garden Club, also a nationally certified instruc-tor, taught the Horticulture classes featuring in-depth discussion about Tagetes (marigolds) , Coleus and Pentas. Course 2 will be held on April 6-8, 2011. New participants are welcome; it

is not necessary to have taken Course 1 ; however all members interested

in being a Flower Show Judge must eventually take all four classes and get

passing grades on all exams on Flower Show procedure, Horticulture and

Design. Contact Gail Pica, School Chairman, or Catherine Ware, Registrar,

for more information.

All members are asked to help provide refreshments to our attendees of our House Tour at our Hospitality table at the Kapnick Center at the Botanical Gardens. You will be asked to sign up at our December and January General Meetings. We are asking for home baked cook-ies, preferably chocolate chip and oatmeal, brownies, and breads, such as zucchini, banana, pumpkin, or date-nut. If you do not wish to bake, we are accepting cash donations to help defray our costs to fill in all we need. Cash donations will be collected at our general meet-ings in December and January. If you sign up to bake, your goodies should be dropped off on the day of the Preview Tour, Friday, Feb. 4th. If you are not going to be at either December or January meeting, you may sign up via email to either: Linda Crescenzi [email protected] or Carol LaCanfora [email protected] Thank you in advance for all your help. Trowel Prints Fall 2010

Kathleen Hawryluk, Flower Show Chairman Last year’s Flower Show, “Wonder Women” drew many compliments and I thought I would share a note received from one of the judges: Dear Carol, Gail, Kathleen and the Members of the Naples Garden Club, Thank you so much for inviting me to judge your flower Show, “Wonder Women.” It certainly was a fantastic op-portunity to be reminded of the talents of women through history, currently, around the world, and right here in Naples!! The creative talents of your members were evident in your special logo, and through the wonderful designs. The variety of horticulture was exceptional and the quality was outstanding. All of your committee members should be congratulated for a show which provided so much education and de-light to all who viewed it … and I’m sure all did “chuckle, remember, respect and were astounded”!! Thank you too, for your wonderful hospitality, lovely luncheon and beautiful gift. Naples Garden Club is amazing! Most sincerely, Carole Mack, NGCAJ Gulf Coast Garden Club, Florida Hilton Garden Club, New York

Many other such notes were received and we can be very proud of our accomplishments. Can we do better? We can certainly try! This year the title of the show is “Garden Party” and the Schedule Committee has been working diligently on the details of the show. In this show, to be held on March 24, 25 and 26, we will be honoring the Naples Botanical Gardens. The judging will occur Thursday and the show will be open to the public on Friday and Saturday.

It is most important that all of us participate in the show. We need hostesses, as well as designers and horticulture entries. Last year we were lacking designs and some of our members had to do two or more designs in order to have the judging proceed as planned. Please sign up for the design courses and enter. You will find that there is a lot of help around and it is great fun! We also had to go outside the club to fill the classes, and more than one top award went to ‘outsiders.’ More details will follow but we should all note on our calendars the times and dates of the show. We also need lots of help that week in setting up and also in taking down the show.

The House and Garden Tour will be Saturday, February 5, 2011: Plans are progressing for the 2011 House and Garden Tour, scheduled for Saturday, February 5, 2011. Our tour will again be starting and ending at Naples Botanical Gardens. The buses will leave at 8:45 AM, 9:30 AM, 1:00 PM and 1:45 PM. You should have received an email updating the membership about our online ticket sales that is de-buting this year. Ticket prices are $85 and Patron tickets are $150. The Development Committee, headed by Fifi MacMahon along with Bev Metcalf, Deb Black, Peggy Conigilio and Jean Leamon, began work last summer to secure Sponsorships and Underwriters for the tour. I am pleased to an-nounce that so far they have been successful in obtaining an unprecedented $14,000 plus in support from local businesses. Please look for the list of our sponsors both in Trowel Prints and on our website. Be sure to say thank you if you are patronizing any of these places or make it a point to do so. We are very appreciative of the over-whelming success on the part of this committee and for the generosity of the Naples community! Roberta Ross

also worked early to secure wonderful gifts for our Gift Totes and prizes for our bus raf-fles. We are thankful to have so many people working so hard. Since this is the NGC major fund-raising event, we need all members to participate in some capacity to ensure the success of this annual event. This event takes the entire Garden Club to make it happen. If you haven’t already signed up, please email or call Diane Green @ [email protected] or 430-3833. I INVITE NEW MEMBERS TO GET INVOLVED!
