Kaden Thomas Shaffer is 6 years old and the subject of this month’s investi-gation! He shares the branches of his family tree with Neil (his dad), Teresa (his mom), Logan, Luke, Connor, and Jared (his brothers), Sierra, and finally Ashlynn (his sisters). I found that Kaden is in Mrs. Place Kindergarten class where he finds enjoyment in the math stations, recess and lunch (typical kid!), gym, art, and reading club. He is a fella with many hobbies which in-clude a love for kickball, football, basketball, and listening to music. He enjoys looking through baseball, basketball, or wrestling cards to further enhance his sporting knowledge. (I just hope he keeps the cards in mint condition!) Mr Shaffer would like to someday share the desk of Mrs. Place as he would like

to be a Kindergarten teacher when he grows up. Lastly, I found that Kaden’s favorite Bible story is the one where Joshua is instructed to tear down the walls of Jericho, a story he learned about in preschool at First United Methodist Preschool! You will find Kaden “blowing his horn in the name of Christ” every Wednesday afternoon at Mustard Seeds and every Sunday morning here at church… should you see the little sportster, give him a shout-out of your own! As for me, until next month, I’m signing out!

On November 20th, the kids of “Team KICK” will be going shopping to provide a

Thanksgiving dinner for a needy family in Van Wert. The kids will be given a set amount of money and they will have to determine what kind of food to provide for the allotted amount of

money….so, not only will we be providing a meal, we are going to learn a little budgeting

lesson as well!

High School Schedule for November: 6th Open night. Come for food and a good time at 6:30pm

13th Tonight meal is at 6:30pm We talk on Christ’s words on the poor and the broken in our world. Gearing our hearts for our Shoebox Ministry. We will get instructions and be prepared for next week.

20th Tonight we begin our Shoebox Ministry Project. This is essentially Christmas in a box for a kid that actually needs us to make Christmas. We gather to wrap boxes and make final touches on our presents. Meal – at 6:03pm

27th Thanksgiving - No Youth Group

I feel thankful, not because I am supposed to be in November, but because of how much I have learned being with the youth. I am fortunate that my own kids are in this program. I see them growing in Christ. I have spoken personally to kids in middle and high school and have seen changes in their lives already as they hear the TRUTH. We know the strength of the influences the world throws at them and how easy it is for them to stumble. Many kids do not hear the Word of God unless they come to our Youth Group. Sadly, that leaves little precious time to arm them for their week. My question and challenge to you as parents and care givers is: Are you talking to them as well? Do they see you reading the Bible? This magnifies what I say tremen-dously! We then stand united. When these kids see Almighty God actually working in their lives and see for the first time how vital they are for the Kingdom all these efforts will have been more than worth it.

In Him, Mark

Sleuth Report by Al Arnold

First United Methodist Church is a trove of talented and experienced people, and Esther Ley is one of those people. “Memory is the mother of all wisdom,” accord-ing to the Greek playwright, Aeschylus, and in a recent meeting on church mis-sions, it was Esther’s memory of her many years in mission projects that enabled her to bring much wisdom to the discussion.

Esther and Watson Ley moved to Van Wert and began attending First Church in 1965. Prior to that they had attended the Middle Point United Methodist Church where Esther was active in the women’s organizations. She continued that work at First as a member of the Women’s Society of Christian Service (WSCS), now-a-days known as United Methodist Women, and soon had gained leadership positions in the Defiance District where she served as vice-president and president.

“We worked with 98 churches in Northwest Ohio,” Esther remembers. “We had a great group of dis-trict officers; we had fun, and we accomplished a great deal.”

One such area of accomplishment was in the field of missions. Esther became the District Sec-retary of Missionary Education whose task was to educate women in local churches on the needs in the field. “We conducted classes on the mission fields in the Philippines, in Africa, and in areas within the United States,” she recalls. “At that time the Defiance District had several women serving as mis-sionaries, and we supported their work.” Also, the West Ohio Conference conducted a School of Mis-sions at Lakeside each summer, and for several years Esther served on the planning committee. She would spend four or five days each summer working as registrar for the event and partici-pating in the seminars for both men and women.

Another of Esther’s favorite activities has been the Festival of Sharing. “I remember Watson and I taking blankets, articles of clothing, kits, and even pies to the Clark County Fairgrounds in Springfield,” she reminisced. “We promoted the event with ‘missions moments’ during the worship services.” Esther laughed as she recalled seeing someone ride a bicycle down the church aisle, or the time she had someone sitting at a sewing machine at the altar. “We sent 30 bikes and 12 sewing machines those years,” she mused. Esther also remembers the year First Church collected enough money to put a roof on a church in Africa. “Another group had built the church structure, but it needed a roof,” she explained. “The members of this church have always been anxious to help,” she emphasized.

Esther fondly recalls her days in Christian education. “I was the leader of the youth group at Middle Point when Shirley Jarvis was in high school,” she grinned. “She was one of my really good ones!” She continued, “It seems like I taught Sunday School all my life.”

Esther’s commitment to service has extended beyond Methodism. She worked with the Van

Wert County Church Women United whose major initiative was the construction of the new Van Wert

County Home. That came to fruition in 1975. She has been a life member of the Wassenberg Art

Center and served on the Board of Directors for the YWCA. Is it any wonder that Esther Ley brings

much wisdom to our Committee on Missions at FUMC?
