OHIO STEELHEAD ALLEY TOURNAMENT REPORT - OCTOBER 1ST

October 1, 2016 was the Metro West Steelheaders, “Ohio Steelhead Alley River Tournament”.

Jeff Bustos, Mark Lewallen and I drove to Girard, Pennsylvania. We meet up with Matt Benuska 2010 Metro West River Angler of the Year and guide

Jim Chamberlin from Fishing with Jim Outfitter. Jim has donated guided trips to the Metro West Sportsmen Banquet for many years. We all meet at

the Green Roof Inn were we stayed. Great place; it caters to fishermen www.thegreenroofinn.com.

We checked out Trout Creek and Elk Creek in PA and the Conneaut Creek in Ohio; we saw steelhead in Trout Creek ready to go up. But the water

was low and dirty. So we decided to fish the harbor at Conneaut Creek. We ended up going two for five. Later on that week Mark Davis went with Jim

Chamberlin and did very well. Lots of fun and great fishing hope to see you next year!

    MANISTEE RIVER FISHING REPORT

I had a chance to fish the Manistee River w/ My Son Taylor, Brother Sean & Nephew

Alex last Saturday & Sunday. We split up with two Guys to a Guide and swap the

second day. Fishing has been tough lately with only a few kings around (but some

big ones over 20#’s). The lake water is still 74 Degrees out front of the harbor, top to

bottom and not much rain, so there hasn’t been a big push recently (only a few steel-

    ies as of yet).

Anyhow, Saturday started out at 42 Deg F, with Light winds out of the East. We wit-

nessed an amazing sunrise as we headed down from High Bridge to the first high

banks series of holes. My Son Taylor & I fished w/ Mike Bright Jr of “Late for Supper”

charters and ran Ping-a T plugs w/ a couple drive by tail swats and one mid teener

that rolled in the line and pulled the plug just shy of the boat. Taylor got to meet the

“demo river” head on w/ a 20+ king that just about pulled him off his feet. On her

second pass by the boat the king headed for the bank and under a submerged tree.

We tried to reposition, but the anchor wouldn’t hold in the swifter current and broke

her off (Big Fun!). Sean & Alex fished w/ Capt’n Dave Kane of Benzie Fishing Ser-

vice. They ran Ping- T’s down the sides and ran Spawn under Bobbers down the

middle & back bounced spawn through the deeper, cleaner holes. Sean Landed a

jack under a bobber for the day.

Sunday started out a bit cooler and the wind was cranking out of the east at just

under 20mph (Love the river, because it doesn’t really matter how hard the wind

blows. The ripple actually helps refract the light on high sun days to allow the fish to

stay in shallower holes longer). We started pitching UV & Glow Jr thundersticks in

the dark, up along the log jams and banks with no takers. We had another awesome sunrise and moved on to running spawn under bobbers. I landed

a mid teener hen around mid-morning just down from Bear Creek (Yes! Eggs for the beach!!). We moved further down to the clay bank and back

bounced for the rest of the morning. Taylor got into a feisty Jack using spawn under bobber, that gave him plenty of fun about half way down from

Potters landing to Rainbow bend. Sean & Alex fished the Highbridge area and Alex tied into a nice King in the shady hole just above Highbridge on a

blue Ping-A-T, just before quitting time.

Overall, the weather was great, the fishing pressure still high (even with the reduced number of kings available) and the bald eagles seemed to be

doing very well. If you haven’t tried a guided river trip, I highly recommend it as a relaxing way to fish and let your cares drift away (but of course there

is still the organized chaos to deal with, when you have a fish on!)

MANISTEE RIVER 10/15 SALMON TOURNAMENT REPORT

What a great weekend at the Manistee River!!!

We had a group of approximately 19 people between friends, coworkers,

and family. Only 10 participated in the tournament which 4 were Metrowest

    Steelheaders.

The rain and cooler temperatures pushed a lot of fresh fish to Tippy Dam.

We arrived to Tippy Dam recreation camp site Friday night with a lot of

good reports of limits on Thursday and Friday. Saturday we ended up go-

ing five for twelve, only males with a couple nice big fish breaking leaders.

We ended up weighing in 8 kings in the tournament. Big fish was awarded

to Paul Pratt. First place went to Fabian Sepulveda with 3 fish and second

place to John Lengyel with 2 fish. Sunday John and I caught more fish in-

cluding a brown trout, a coho and 3 male kings. A couple guys from our

group also got 8 kings. Lots of fun and great fishing! Thanks to everyone

who made it, and hope to see you next year!

    FRANKFORT SALMON TOURNAMENT REPORT 9/10/2016

The weather was questionable at best for the September 10 salmon tournament out of Frankfort, MI. However three intrepid

captains couldn’t be kept off the water.

The captains encountered rough, but fishable water to start the morning. One boat, Tops Therapy (captain Tim Potter of

TCAS) fished inside the harbor while the Dodger (Bill Dodge, MWS) and Finfull Addiction (Mike Hartrick, MWS) hit the shelf

    to start the day.

By 10 am all three boats were on harbor patrol with almost as much water falling on them as was underneath the boats. By

around noon the rain was blowing sideways and all three boats called it quits. Dodger came in third place with one coho,

Tops Therapy took second with a small king, and Finfull Addiction took first with two coho and

    a small king.
