Prime Cattle to 219ppk & £1420 Barren Cows to 128ppk & £1098
Monday saw Prime Cattle sell to a stronger trade with an impressive top of 219ppk and £1302 for a shapely Limousin steer
(19m) from Rosie Fishleigh of Sourton Cross, a cracking, but slightly younger (18m) Charolais heifer out of the same trailer ran to 196ppk (£1149). A further quality Charolais female (24m) from Robert Summers, Sidmouth saw 202ppk (£1245) as did the best of a decent run of Angus heifers (19m) from Basil Cane up from Plymouth. South Devon females (22m) sold readily
and to 194ppk (£1261) for Alan Luscombe of Bickington with other Native bred sorts reaching 192ppk and £1189 for Devon steers (28m) from Rachael Leonard, Ashreigney and Adrian Pike of Nyment Rowland respectively. Over thirty month prime
cattle looked a more buoyant trade with the best to 207ppk (£1420) for a Blonde steer from Grenville Hockridge of Okehampton. Not the greatest show of Barren Cows forward this week, with plenty of older suckler and dairy sorts running
in that 60 to 80ppk range, those apart, a Continental cross cow from David Pellow, Sourton hit 128ppk, South Devons from Steve Arrowsmith Postbridge fetched 127ppk (£1098) whilst best dairy bred barreners saw 126ppk (£816) for a Friesian from
JC Palmer of Chawleigh. A grand 944kg Simmental cull bull from Robert & Janet Legg of Dunchideock attained 116ppk and realised just shy of £1100.
Vendors are kindly reminded to inform us of their entries for Monday’s Prime Cattle and Barren Cow auction in
advance to enable potential purchasers to be advised of likely numbers.

Thanks to our vendors for your continued support and a reminder to all that there is good competition for all classes of prime
cattle and barren cows at Exeter Livestock Centre on a Monday.
Also note, TB pre movement tests are NOT REQUIRED for this sale.
Lambs to £89 & 196ppk
Cull Ewes to £99.50 & Rams to £107.50
A few more lambs forward were of very mixed quality, with the best keenly
sought after selling to £89 for a single overweight from Reg & Annie Pedrick of Ashburton closely followed at £88.20 for a pen of overweights from Alan
Weymouth of Salcombe. A smart run of Texel and Berrichon cross lambs from Derek Arnold of Morchard Road rocketed to £88, £87.80, £87.50 &
£84. Derek also topped the sale pence per kilo, with top price coming from 45kg lambs at 196ppk and others at 183, 172 & 171ppk. Further pens of smart
48-53kg lambs from Tom & Emma Wotton of Moretonhampstead realised £83.20, £82 & £81 (x2) with similar sorts at £80.50 for DJ & SJ Mills of Lapford
and a single lot of forty-three 49kg lambs from Tony Pickard of North Molton achieved £79.50. 46kg lambs from Jonathan Musgrave of Yealmpton rose to
£79 (172ppk) as further 45kg lambs made £76 again for Alan Weymouth and £75 again for DJ & SJ Mills. A smart pen of 44kg Charollais cross lambs from John Southwood of Copplestone sold well and to £82 (186ppk) with others of that weight at £75
for Dennis Tapp of Rackenford and £74.50 for Crispin Harvey of Moretonhampstead. 43kg lambs sold to £75.20 (175ppk) for Blackaton Manor Farms of Widecombe and to £74.50 for Rothamsted Research of North Tawton. A super pen of 42kg
Charollais sired fed lambs from Simon & Rose Partridge of Poundsgate climbed to £77.20 (184ppk) and 41kgs peaked at £72.20 (176ppk) for JAC & CM Stanbury of Throwleigh who also sold 40kg Texel sired lambs at £71 & £70.50 (178 & 176ppk). A nice pen of 39kg lambs from the Shinner family of Ermington realised £68.80 (176ppk), 38kgs climbed to £67 (176ppk) for Colin
Friend of Lydford and to £66.20 (174ppk) for Alan Weymouth. Lighter Suffolk cross 34kg lambs from Colin Friend made £60 (176ppk) whilst son Tom, sold a double pen of Scotch lambs of the same weight at £55 (162ppk). SQQ was 4 pence less, due
mainly to quality at 167ppk.
An entry of just over 600 cull sheep lacked strength generally, with a short show of cull rams peaking at £107.50 for CE
Partridge & Co of Poughill and £98 for Terry Scarrott of Kentisbeare. Crossbred ewes sold to £99.50 for Suffolk crosses from Rothamsted Research, £98, £94.50 and £89.50 for Tim Whitley of Widecombe, £97.50 for Jonathan Musgrave, £96.50 for
Peter & Andrew Baker of Marldon and £95 for two further vendors. A few heavyweight Mules into the early £70’s, with the majority in the £60’s and best of the hill bred ewes were up slightly on the week reaching £54 for heavy sorts from Brian Vallance of Bickington. All lightweight ewes dearer on the week by at least £2-£5. Overall average is back nearly £5, but due
entirely to quality not trade.

Autumn is now in full swing and so far has proven to be a real wash out, with the wet weather hampering any attempt to proceed with autumn cultivations during October. Thankfully, as we enter November, the weather seems to be settling down, which will hopefully allow for winter crops to be sown and established with as few problems as possible. The recent announcement that an extra £40 million is being made available for farm productivity grants in the next stage of the Countryside Productivity Scheme is certainly pleasing. The money available is aimed to allow farmers to invest in a range of technology including robotic equipment and systems to aid livestock and crop production and to improve the use of renewable energy produced on farm by improving energy storage and distribution. Examples of eligible projects include robotic milking, slurry handling, harvesting and weeding equipment, and electrical battery storage systems to allow for better use of renewable energy that is produced on farm. The grants cover 40% of eligible costs with the minimum grant available being £35,000, meaning the minimum total investment needs to be worth £87,500 to be eligible for funding. Thus, if you are considering investing in farm technology that meets the above criteria it would certainly be worth looking into these farm productivity grants. If you would like any further information on these grants or any help in applying please contact your local Kivell Rural Professional office, we would be more than happy to help. The deadline for applications is December 2018 but each application will be considered as they are submitted. For those of you who may be interested in smaller scale farm grants, the LEADER grants may be better suited to you. Project eligibility and funding levels vary between local action groups but examples of projects eligible for funding include equipment to improve animal welfare, such as enhanced livestock handling equipment and calving detectors; equipment to increase the efficiency of energy, water and fertiliser usages such as LED livestock housing and pig/poultry water filtration systems. Unfortunately, the grant does not cover equipment that has already been bought, but if you are thinking of investing in some new equipment it may be worthwhile looking into the LEADER grants to see if your project would be eligible for funding. If you require any assistance please do contact your local Kivells Rural Professional office via the contact details over leaf. For the sheep farmers amongst you, you should be receiving your annual sheep inventory forms from DEFRA in the post or via email by the end of November. It is important to complete and return your inventory to DEFRA by 31st December 2017 as failing to do so will increase your chance of a Basic Payment Scheme inspection. After you have completed your inventory, you must remember to include your annual inventory total (as at 1st December 2017) in your holding

register in order to comply with Statutory Management Requirement 8: Sheep and Goat Identification of Cross Compliance. For those of you whose land is situated within Nitrate Vulnerable Zones (NVZs) remember that grassland derogations for 2018 are now open and close on 29th December 2017. If you are successful in applying for a grassland derogation, the limit of spreading 170kg per hectare of nitrogen in livestock manure increases to 250kg for grazing livestock manure. If you wish to apply for a grassland derogation for 2018 you need to be in touch with the Environment Agency before the application window closes, and remember that if you applied for derogation in 2017 you will need to re-apply for 2018 if you would like another derogation. With December now just around the corner, so too is the Basic Payment Scheme payment window, which duly opens on 1st December 2017. The exchange rate for this year’s payments has been set at €1 = £0.89470, which means an increase of about 5% on last year’s payment and so this year payments should average approximately £90 per acre. Here’s hoping the Rural Payments Agency makes payments promptly this year.
