CommunityLink

Our Church

This is the monthly magazine of our church featuring articles, news, information, stories, and other events for the month.

We are calling it “CommunityLink” because we are a group of churches linked together creating a community and who are commissioned to reach our local communities and

beyond.

Defining what we do…

Our purpose statement establishes the parameters for what we do in the life of the church. It becomes something that is living in our church community and is recognised

in everything we do.

The assignment God has given to the church is:

To be a God-honouring Christian Community…

Connecting people to Jesus

Growing people to be like Jesus

Serving people with grace through Jesus

What this means is that everyone will be active in the life of the church helping people find connection with Jesus through sharing the Gospel. We grow so that in everything we

do and say we display a likeness to Jesus, and those who see us - see Jesus. We are called to serve using the gifts given to us by God through His Holy Spirit to promote Jesus and the Kingdom of God.

Jesus Christ is the Head of the church and we are reminded daily through our assignment that He is to be glorified in everything we do.

Here for the First Time?Welcome to our church. It’s great you

made the decision to join us today. We hope that your time with us is enjoyable. We are a church that loves Jesus and believe He is everything to us. You will experience worship that aims to glorify God and hear preaching from the Bible which we believe is perfect truth from God.

Please make yourself known to a host who greeted you at the door as you entered or

one of the pastors. Also take the time to look through the Information Pack and fill out the card so we can stay in touch if you decide to make our church your church.

What a great opportunity we all have to do ministry together

in every new season God opens up. Our influence reaches across Geelong, Bannockburn and Bendigo pursuing one vision of making Christ known. The church is a great thing and powerful when we are gathered together working alongside God impacting our communities and our world with the Gospel.

There are some characteristics of the church we should be aware of as Paul writes to the church in Ephesus:

The church is known for faith to God and love for people.

For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. (Ephesians 1:15)

The church grows in a greater and closer relationship with God.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. (Ephesians 1:17)

The church is under Christ’s authority.

And God placed all things under his feet… (Ephesians 1:22a)

The church follows Christ as the Head of the church.

…and appointed him to be head over everything for the church (Ephesians 1:22b)

In our church today we must adopt the same characteristics of knowing our purpose, growing, being under authority and recognising Christ’s place as the Head of the church. We are all called to serve Jesus and to use the gifts He has given to us to make a difference in connecting people to Jesus and helping them grow to be like Jesus.

In Pastor Bill Vasilakis’ new book “The Church We Can Be” he makes a comment of how some people view the church. He says:

“To hear the comment that they (people) think Jesus is okay but they can’t stand the church, reveals a lack of understanding about how God’s Kingdom expresses itself in the world. If one truly loves Jesus they will love His Church, want to be intimately connected with other Christ followers and serve Jesus’ purposes through the spiritual family in which He places them.”

The expression of our ministry should have its foundation on this love for Jesus and love for His church. Our primary motive is to draw people’s attention away from us and onto Christ. We learn this from John the Baptist who had large multitudes of people following him. Yet when He saw Jesus, John announced, “He must become greater, I must become less.” (John 3:30)

To serve in a church with Christ as the Head and under His authority, we serve as John did… making Christ greater and making us less. This is doing ministry through humility and no matter how gifted we may be and the extraordinary things we may do with our gifts, we serve Christ who becomes greater in our ministry and who remains as the Head of our church.

The strength of our church is determined by the one who builds it. We stay reminded that when Christ builds the church, not even the gates of Hades can overcome it (Matthew 16:18). To do ministry together in every new season before us, let’s encourage each other to do all things in humility, so we can together promote Jesus to be greater in all things.

Serving Christ together.

Ps Dave

The paper below was written by Elise Manning as part of her learning in CRC Training. In this paper Elise briefly describes the past, present and future of CRC Churches International and brings some insight on the global church we are affiliated with.

The perspectives that helped shape the CRC.

As pioneered by Leo Harris, the CRC Churches International

(CRC) movement has been established upon varying principles. These perspectives, being historical, theological and sociological in nature, aid in understanding the differences from past to present. Furthermore, any contemporary issues that may face the movement can be encountered with these foundations.

A core perspective that the CRC movement is built upon is revival. Revival as championed by Harris is to be “Christ centred and word based”. Upon the establishment of the CRC, Leo emphasised in ‘Echoes of Grace, 1944’, a national revival is, “Christian workers, assemblies and groups voluntarily co-operating, praying, preaching, planning for true national revival according to the word of God”. Out of this, came the ‘national message’ and a part of this was a theory on British Israel. Chant describes it as “a historicist view of Bible prophecy and the identification of Anglo-Saxon nations as the lost Ten Tribes”. This delivered a strong faith message to a society struggling in war time. However, due to this controversial Anglo-Saxon theology, the crusade essentially alienated itself from other groups. Alongside this, it was not universally applicable and gravitated towards elitism. Although this principle was removed from CRC doctrine, it played a distinct part in the historical beginnings.

The CRC today, is similarly based upon the revival commission as it was in the beginning. The CRC charter states they are, “continually releasing people to outwork the Great Commission for New Testament Revival” in the world. Contrary to the once isolating nuances of the ‘national message’, the CRC today has a universal focus in its widespread missions ministry.

The CRC holds firmly to the theological perspectives of the new creation and the continual outworking of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. The CRC operate within many theological principles as stated in the declaration of faith, however, these particular perspectives are CRC distinctive. The new creation message understands we are, as said by Harris “reborn through faith in Jesus Christ, and having received a revelation of God’s spirit, that we are indeed God’s new creation”. The born again experience and having new life through Christ is a fundamental belief of the CRC movement. From 1945, to the present, this principle is an essential component to the charter and doctrine of belief. Alongside this, the gifts of the Holy Spirit provide evidence of the Pentecostal roots of the movement and a central part to church functioning. Upon the establishment of the crusade, the “present day reality of spiritual gifts” was identified in the unanimous decisions of its beliefs and operations. This evidences how this theological perspective moulded the movement into what it is today.

Currently, although these gifts are still outworked by its people, the presence of deliverance ministry has become a lesser focus. Although an original emphases for the CRC, Harris retracted from it in the 1970’s . However, this ministry is still seen in some parts of CRC ministry, but not as a distinctive.

The sociological perspective of the CRC movement was largely built on local church presence. This “new testament pattern for revival” believed for CRC churches to be planted across Australia and throughout the world. This local church autonomy was established as a CRC emphasis as a result of the clear distinction of the universal church and local church, as theorized through Matthew 18:7 and 16:18. The organisation of peoples in local church settings throughout Australia reflects a sociological perspective that helped establish the foundations of the CRC movement.

Even so today, there are 121 CRC churches in Australia, evidencing significant presence not only in peoples’ communities, but widespread throughout the country. Differing to 1945, the CRC movement has begun ministry training to qualify leaders to furthermore plant churches and extend into world missions. Tertiary educated ministers and leaders have strengthened the churches and their autonomy as they reach out to people in their local communities.

From its beginnings, historical perspectives such as revival and the once ‘national message’ helped shape the beliefs of CRC’s overall mandate. Alongside this, theological principles such as the gifts of the Holy Spirit and new creation doctrine, provide a foundation for all that the CRC do and move through. The sociological aspect of the CRC, through local church autonomy and church planting has shaped what the movement was in its beginnings and where it is today. Considering these perspectives, the movement can look to the future and be equipped for the contemporary issues they may face.

Dear Church Over the last year and a half, you may be aware of the challenges and changes that have taken place in our church in Bendigo. This year we have been running a mid-week meeting with the small group who have decided to stay and support the rebuilding of the church. We are blessed to have Danny, Joyce, Sevi and Faye who are committed to our church and doing everything possible to keep the ministry moving forward. These four people are also meeting on Sunday mornings for worship, communion and Bible study. The Board of Eldership that governs the three churches under the care of WPCC Inc have been praying and talking through solutions for the church in Bendigo. We believe the church needs a Pastor who is able to live in Bendigo and be part of the community. In our search for a Pastor we have been speaking with Pastor Dan Parker, the State CRC Chairman and Senior Minister of Kingston City Church (KCC). As part of our discussions, Kingston City Church put forward a proposal to take full responsibility of Bendigo that will maintain the property, resource the church and provide a Pastor. After some prayer and discussion with the Bendigo congregation we have decided to accept the proposal from Kingston City Church and begin a transfer of the Bendigo Church to be under the oversight of Kingston City Church. We are sad and also excited about this opportunity for the church. We hold some sadness as WPCC is nearing an end of a season for having the Bendigo Church part of our church family. We share in the excitement as this new season for the church will be rebuilt and strengthened to continue to be an influence in Bendigo. The reason behind accepting the proposal was for the best interest of the church. Kingston City Church already has oversight of the Karen congregation meeting in the church on Sunday afternoons. This decision will allow KCC to appoint a Pastor who will bring leadership to both congregations. Over the next few months, Waurn Ponds Community Church and Kingston City Church will work together through partnership to ensure a smooth and successful transition of the church. We will continue to have an input into our congregation until a Pastor is appointed and commissioned. Please continue to pray for the Bendigo Church and the two eldership teams involved in making this transition. We believe this is led by God and look forward to a great future for the church. In Christ Dave Manning Senior Pastor

Bannockburn

Our church is well established in the Bannockburn community and is a vibrant congregation, under the leadership of Steve

and Cass Abram who have felt the call to reach into the town to make Christ known to all those who are willing to listen. The church has established a wonderful local vision of praying for the ten towns that are located in the Bannockburn area and we are looking forward to seeing what God can do through the persistence of prayer.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13

For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. 6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did. 7 Do not be idolaters, as some of them were; as it is written: “The people sat down to eat and drink and got up to indulge in revelry.” 8 We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousands of them died.9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel. 11 These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall!13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

A history Lesson

It is to history that Paul goes to show what can happen to people who have been blessed with the greatest privileges. He goes back to the days when the children of Israel were wandering

in the desert. In those days the most wonderful things happened to them. All these privileges the children of Israel possessed, was indication that they were God’s treasured possession, His chosen people who He was saving, providing for and protecting. Yet in spite of this they failed most significantly and repeatedly.

The history of Israel shows that people who enjoyed the greatest privileges of God were far from being safe from temptation; special privilege, Paul reminds the Corinthians, there is no guarantee whatever of security of not falling into temptation.

The temptations

We must note the temptations and the failures which Paul singles out:

1. There is the temptation to idolatry. We do not worship idols so blatantly; but if a person’s god is anything to which he gives all his time and thought and energy then, we certainly still worship the works of our own hands more than we worship God. As humans we have an incredible ability to worship what we admire or value. We pretty much have the ability to idolise anything.

2. There is the temptation to sexual immorality. We live in a highly sexualised culture, with the largest and simplest access to porn than ever before. What is considered by the world to be sexually immoral is becoming less and less. The truth is that sexual sin is deeply damaging and should be guarded against.

3. There is the temptation to try God too far. Consciously or unconsciously we can trade on the mercy of God. At the back of your mind there is

the idea, “It will be all right; God will forgive.” It is to out peril that we forget that there is the holiness as well as the love of God. There IS always forgiveness. But there is also consequences. We need to be careful not to fool ourselves into thinking that because God’s mercy is immeasurable, that we should try out its limits.

4. There is the temptation to grumble. It’s interesting that grumbling is in the four temptations. Don’t discount this one as a serious warning! The temptation to grumble, to complain, to whine and whinge. Grumbling at it’s core is a temptation to refuse to be thankful! And it’s completely life controlling, because it sucks all the joy, all the peace, all the possibility for good and ultimately for the faith right out of you. God views grumbling or complaining very seriously, and deals with it firmly. Consider how God dealt with the entire generation of Israelite wanders, who died and didn’t make it into the promise land, with the exception of Joshua and Caleb.

Teaching on Temptation

So after warning the Corinthian church, Paul goes on to state three things about temptation.

(i) Temptation will come, so be vigilant. That is part of life. He doesn’t say if temptation comes he says WHEN. We will and do face temptations throughout life. Life is a hazardous business, temptations can catch us out all the time, if it’s not one thing then it’s another; we must be ever on the watch.

(ii) Any temptation that comes to us is not unique. Others have endured it and others have come through it. No temptation has

Temptations Ahead

Page 16: NOVEMBER 2018 - wpcc.com.au

16 November 2018

overtaken you that is not common to man…

(iii) With the temptation there is always a way of escape. No one need fall to any temptation, for with the temptation there is the way out, and the way out is not the way of surrender, nor of retreat, but the way of conquest. Jesus called himself ‘The Way’. He is the Way, the narrow path, the gate, The way out of temptation. God always provides this way out, as we look to Jesus.

Conclusion

When Jesus taught his disciples to pray, he taught them to ask God to keep them from temptation. We need to be in the habit of asking for God’s direction and protection

from temptation.

James teaches that God puts evil in no-ones way and he does not tempt us…

James 1:12-18 (NIV)

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. 13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown,

gives birth to death. 16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created.

James tells us that God does not cause us to be tempted, and 1 Corinthians teaches us what he does do! He provides a way out! We need to be asking God to show us that way and praying for Him to help us to walk that way with Him.

In faith, hope and love

Nursing Home MinistryVolunteers Needed

It has been many years Laurie, our Nursing Home Missionery, serves our Lord in this area. He runs sessions in many nursing homes (as in below schedule) and aims to spread the Gospel to everyone in the centres. These sessions including hymn singing, Bible study, etc. Many of the residents are non-believers and they surely benefit from Laurie’s messages.

As there are more nursing homes in Geelong which means that we need more volunteers to work together with Laurie. Please take a look at the below session schedule, if you think you can serve God in this area, please step forward, contact Laurie or the office.

We would love to hear from you!

Books For GoTots!Do you have any books we can have for our 0-3 year olds? If you can help us, please let Dan or Amy Shirley know. Or just bring on Sunday to the Crèche room!Thank you!!!

They must be:

- Age appropriate (0-3 year old)

- Excellent quality (New or almost new)

- No pages missing

- No bigger than A4

Go Tots (Belmont) provide a safe space for young families and their children during our Sunday Service. This is suitable for children from aged 0 till entering Go Kids program.

We would love some more helpers to be a part of the team and serve our families!

Please see Dan or Amy Shirley to express your interest and give it a go! All ages welcomed and encouraged!

Go Kids (Belmont) Starts around 10:30am when the Sunday message starts. A structured program provided for children from 4-year-old kinder to Grade 6 (Cubs for younger kids and Lions for older kids).
