event’s welcome dinner. It promises to be an event to remember. For any other information on the event, please be sure to visit: https://www.cantechthegran-dtour.com.

In this issue, first port of call should undoubtedly be the Can Man feature towards the rear of the magazine. To honour the recent World Mental Health day earlier in October, the blog focuses on what our industry can do to support its workforce.

As a predominantly male industry, long hours undertaken, and a vast amount of travel involved, it can’t be hard to imagine that mental health is an issue that employers need to make a priority. It’ll be interesting to hear your views on this, so please be sure to get in touch.

Elsewhere, our media pack for 2020 will shortly be available, so be sure to visit our website to get a flavour of what we have in store for next year.

I hope you enjoy the issue.

By now Asia CanTech has been and gone, and we hope that the show was a success for you all, with plenty of business under-

taken. Hot on the heels of Asia CanTech, we now look forward to CanTech The Grand Tour in New Delhi, India.

With this in mind, Bell Publishing has announced that the hotel is now confirmed. The chosen location is Novotel New Delhi Aerocity hotel in New Delhi, India.

With the hotel adjacent to both international and domestic airport terminals, the 670 room site promises to be an ideal location for the show. The five-star Novotel New Delhi Aerocity is near the business hubs of Gurgaon, New Delhi and Cyber City. It is also located close to Delhi’s shopping malls including DLF Promenade, Emporio and Worldmark.

The hotel is a suitable venue for the event, as it’s also home to Delhi NCR’s largest convention space, spread over a vast expanse of more than 40,000ft2. With an attractive courtyard also within the hotel complex, it’s an ideal location for the

Hogan also warned that op-posing the deal in a piecemeal fashion, for instance on environ-mental commitments, could cause the agreement to unravel with the Mercosur countries wanting to re-open other parts of the text that they had already agreed, but did not actually like very much. CTCC

After 20 years of negotiations, the Euro-pean Union (EU)-Mercosur trade deal, which has boosted hopes for increased can and associated materials trades with

Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, is now at risk of being blocked ahead of its ratifi cation.

Furious about ongoing deforestation and wild-fi res in Amazonia, EU countries, including infl u-ential countries France and Ireland, have warned that they are ready to block the deal because of alleged breaches by Brazil of its international environmental commitments.

The Irish parliament has already passed a mo-tion opposing the agreement. And offi cials in the offi ce of French President Emmanuel Macron have accused Brazil’s government of duplicity over the fi res, and said France was ready to oppose ratifi ca-tion of the agreement. In the same spirit, there are calls within the European Parliament (EP) for the deal to be amended, with MEPs alleging it fails to hit the 21st century’s global challenges.

Indeed, Belgian socialist MEP Kathleen Van Brempt, the trade co-ordinator for the parliament’s socialists and democrats group, has gone as far as saying the EP should impose pre-ratifi cation condi-tions, demanding changes to the Mercosur deal for it to secure approval by the assembly.

All these complaints matter, because both the EP and all the EU’s 28 (before Britain leaves) member states must ratify the agreement, for it to come into force in full. An EP vote alone could allow the deal’s duty reductions to be made – but regulatory com-mitments within this comprehensive deal would await approval by national parliaments.

The EU-Mercosur deal is sure to be a priority for the new European Commission that takes offi ce on 1 November. On 30 September, the current Irish EU commissioner for agriculture, Phil Hogan, at a European Parliament hearing about his nomination to become the new EU trade Commissioner, con-fi rmed his readiness to look at implementing parts of the agreement ahead of formal ratifi cation.

CCEP celebrates 30th anniversary of its Wakefi eld siteCoca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) welcomed Andrea Jen-kyns MP (Morley and Outwood) to Leeds Beckett University Campus to celebrate 30 years since CCEP’s Wakefi eld site – Europe’s largest soft drinks factory – fi rst opened.

Wakefi eld’s 30th anniversary also marks a £49 million investment in its operations, and includes the opening of a £24 million canning production line.

The new canning production line will be dedicated to making CCEP’s latest light-weight cans, ranging in size from 330ml to 500ml. The line has been built to be sustainable and is an important part of supporting CCEP’s sustainability action plan, This is Forward.

The projected energy savings come from a combination of technologies including automatic control of conveyors and energy sub-metering. In addition, water reduc-tion will be achieved by air rinsing cans and dry lubrication on conveyors.

A further £10 million investment at the site will fund a new state of the art pro-cess plant which will regulate processes across lines. This will reduce water and energy usage whilst continuing to guarantee high quality and consistency.

The business has also allocated £15 million to an existing canning line to replace the use of plastic shrink wrap across multipacks of cans with 100% recyclable cardboard, which will see 4,000 tonnes of plastic removed from across Europe.

Success at Cannex for Roeslein

Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I, part of Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev), has announced that its global beer brand, Budweiser, has launched a new partnership with Sergio Ramos, footballer and current captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team, as part of its ‘Beer of Kings’ campaign.

The partnership will see limited edition aluminium bottles featuring exact replicas of Ramos’ tattoos, creating stand-out on shelf to drive value sales for customers. By purchasing these special-edition bottles fans can unlock exclusive content which offers a deeper perspective, in Ramos’ own words, into the meaning of each of the tattoos.

The ‘Beer of Kings’ campaign celebrates Ramos’ career in advance of his latest mile-stone as most capped player ever for Spain.

“I’m very excited to partner with Budweiser, a leading global brand who shares my pas-sion and commitment for the sport of foot-ball,” Ramos said. “I look forward to sharing my story in a unique way with my fans around the world to inspire them to see that

greatness is within all of us, you just need the confidence to step up.”

“Budweiser is proud to celebrate the jour-ney of Sergio Ramos as a king of global football and one of the greatest players of his generation,” said Steve Arkley, Budweiser global vice president. “We’re excited to spot-light his story in such a unique way for football fans worldwide and our ambition is to inspire consumers to step up and taste greatness.”

The limited edition bottles will be availa-ble through ecommerce and at participating convenience retailers across the UK.

Tin users see weaker marketsThe 15th annual tin use survey carried out by the International Tin Association (ITA) showed refined tin use grew by 2% in 2018 but points to a contraction in most sectors in 2019. 141 companies took part, accounting for some 43% of estimated global refined tin use in 2018.

ITA’s latest estimate of refined tin use in 2018 is 372,000 tonnes, based on data from the new 2019 study and trade data. Refined tin demand reported by survey participants increased by 2% from 2017, roughly in line with our global estimates. However, the sur-vey suggests tin demand will contract during 2019, primarily attributed to an unstable macroeconomic environment.

Solder accounts for by far the largest global share of tin use, growing by 2% in 2018. Forecasts for 2019, both inside and out of China, are significantly more negative because of weakening global manufacturing and supply chain issues, mainly linked with the US-China trade war.

Tinplate use continued a long-term trend of slow decline, falling by -2% in 2018 and most probably again in 2019. Prospects are espe-cially poor in China, despite continued reports

of increasing capacity there. Lower tin coating weights and competition

from alternative packaging are challenging tin use. Changing tariffs are significantly disrupt-ing global supply chains.

Provisional estimates of total global tin use, including refined and unrefined forms, totalled 455,600 tonnes in 2018, up 3% on 2017. The Recycling Input Rate (RIR), the use of recycled tin as a proportion of total tin use, was calculated to be roughly constant at 32% in both 2018 and 2019.

Pipeline refined tin stocks held by surveyed companies at the end of 2018 amounted to the equivalent of 3.9 weeks’ supply. If this ratio is extrapolated based on global con-sumption, it would imply that world consumer stock holdings were around 28,000 tonnes.

The processing and packaging machinery industry celebrated another year of outstand-ing achievement and business excellence at its eighth PPMA Group Industry Awards.

The awards recognise manufacturing excel-lence, technical innovation, entrepreneurship, customer service, sales and training support, as well as outstanding contribution to the processing and packaging machinery sector.

With 103 nominations received across 12 industry categories, the number of awards submissions this year was exceptionally high, exceeding last year’s previous record-break-ing tally by 35%. Due to the volume and qual-ity of the nominations received, the judging panel had to introduce a three-stage voting process.

The highlight of the evening was the announcement of two lifetime achievement awards – a first for the PPMA Group Industry Awards. They were presented to Michel Podevyn, president of Spiroflow, and Chris Holland, managing director of Holmach, for their influence and long-standing service to the industry.

During his long and esteemed career, Michel became a pioneer of the flex screw

Winners of the PPMA Awards revealedconveyor for companies within the food, chemical and mineral industries, previously dogged by blocked filters.

He was also the brainchild behind a bespoke heavy-duty filling station in the early 1980s for a new Falklands Island airport, which was later adopted by food and chemical companies across the world.

Thanks to Michel’s commercial knowhow and ingenuity, Spiroflow’s export business now counts for more than 50 per cent of its turnover.

Similarly, Chris’ sharp rise to the fore in food research was recognised on a global level in the 1990s, after which he bought Peter Holland (Food Machinery) and rebranded it Holmach in 2000.

He made a significant contribution to the industry thanks to the introduction and spread of pasteurised ready meals. He also worked with European packaging suppliers to help eliminate plastics from ready meal produc-tion, and further helped to extend shelf-life and reduce food waste.

He remains a strong advocate for devel-oping improved processing solutions and improving food standards.

Bunting has appointed Robert Clausing as the company’s new lean manufacturing co-ordina-tor. Clausing will be responsible for focusing on utilising a lean manufacturing mindset in order to reduce and eliminate waste.

“Waste is anything that adds to the process without adding value to the product,” said Clausing. “It can be as obvious as transporta-tion expenses and as subtle as spending too much time searching for a misplaced item. Everyone can see waste, and even conceive ways to reduce or eliminate it.”

He joins the Bunting team from TECT Power, where he served as general opera-tions manager. Clausing has also worked for Carlson Products as a supply chain manager and The Coleman Company as a global quality manager.

“I look forward to guiding teams that can transform ideas and suggestions to pro-ject Bunting as a world-class organisation,” said Clausing. “I am eager to unleash a lean mindset that leads all Bunting facil-ities towards o p e r a t i o n s excellence.”

Coca-Cola invests £55m in Sidcup canning plantCoca-Cola European Partners has opened a new production line at its site in Sidcup, UK.

The investment includes a new £16m production line dedicated to making CCEP’s latest lightweight cans ranging from in size from 330ml to 500ml.

A further £39m was invested in an auto-mated storage and retrieval system ware-house in Sidcup, saving more than 10,000 road miles by HGV trucks and almost four tonnes of CO2 per year.

Rory Kerr, operations director at Coca-Cola European Partners Sidcup, said: “As a truly local business, we are proud to manufacture some of the nation’s favourite drinks – right here from our factory in Sidcup.

“Investing in our people is of the upmost importance to us – helping to continually improve the quality, efficiency and sustainabil-

ity of our operations, as well as ensuring we can continue to support the growth of a team of highly skilled and dedicated people.

“Investments such as this helps to elevate our business capabilities and support the manufacturing and distribution network in England more broadly.”

Leendert den Hollander, vice-president Coca-Cola European Partners GB, said: “We are passionate about making positive con-tributions to the communities in which we operate. Sidcup is a great example of the legacy that our local sites can provide our communities, while remaining focused on delivering manufacturing excellence through-out our operations in Great Britain.”

After 43 years at CCEP, Sidcup’s longest serving employee, Oliver Fernandes, labora-tory analyst, was given the honour of officially

open the line with James Brokenshire MP and was then presented with a gift to celebrate his commitment.

MP, James Brokenshire, said: “I welcome Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP) com-mitment to supporting manufacturing in the UK by investing £55 million in its Sidcup operations. This is positive news for the local economy and a further boost for Bexley.”

Consumers unaware of recyclability of cansA survey of 2,000 UK adults commissioned by The Can Makers has revealed that once the UK public are aware of the recyclability of aluminium drinks cans, they are far more like-ly to make different choices when it comes to their choices of drinks packaging.

Aluminium, like all metals is a permanent material, which means it can be recycled forever without any loss of quality.

However, consumers are unaware of this fact, with over 30% believing that aluminium drinks cans cannot be recycled more than nine times. A further 32% are unaware how many times an aluminium can is able to be recycled. Only 12% of younger consumers, between the ages of 16 and 34 correct-ly know aluminium cans can be recycled infinitely.

When given the correct information that aluminium cans are infinitely recyclable, half of consumers (49%) would be more likely to choose an aluminium drinks can over a plastic bottle, whilst a quarter (27%) would be more likely to choose a drinks can over a glass bottle.

Commenting on the results, Margaret

Bates, Professor of Sustainable Wastes Management at Northampton University, said: “The results just go to show how much confusion is out there, even with aluminium cans where recycling is so well established and the environmental benefits so clear.”

Marcel Arsand, chairman of the Can Makers, said: “Not only are aluminium cans infinitely recyclable, it only takes 60 days for a used can to be back on the shelves.

“There is also robust recycling infrastruc-ture already in place to easily recycle cans. These results clearly show how important it is that the UK public is made more aware of the recyclability of aluminium cans.”

Guinness World Record broken for ‘most cans opened simultaneously’

Stolle Machinery was the major sponsor of a record setting event on 18 September 2019 in Sidney, Ohio, US. As part of the Shelby County bicentennial celebration, several thou-sand school children and public gathered in Sidney High School stadium and broke the record for ‘most people opening drink cans simultaneously’.

The previous record was set in Japan in 2018 for 1,204 cans. The new record is now 2,344 cans, and is an official Guinness World Record.

Stolle Machinery has a major manufactur-ing facility in Sidney which designs and builds industry-standard Stolle EOE conversion sys-tems. Ralph Stolle, the namesake of the company, started his operations in Sidney in 1961, and a number of his grandchildren attended the record-breaking event.

The cans used in the event were made by Ardagh and delivered by BevSource to Moeller Brew Barn in Maria Stein, Ohio where they were filled with water and labelled for

the record breaking attempt event.

Next GenerationThe primary participant group was 6-12th grade school children from around Shelby County. The students were exposed to infor-mation about the can industry throughout the

experience, from facts on the recyclability of aluminium and the incredible precision and speed of the manufacturing process, to the opportunities for employment once they grad-uate. Educational materials on the can mak-ing process and related facts were supplied to teachers for use after the event.

Ball has confirmed that it will begin construc-tion on its first dedicated aluminium cups manufacturing facility to serve the growing demand for innovative, sustainable beverage packaging for US customers and consumers.

The new aluminium cups manufacturing facility will be adjacent to Ball's existing aluminium beverage can manufacturing plant in Rome, Georgia, and is expected to ramp up production in the fourth quarter of 2020. Ball plans to hire approximately 145 new employees for the cups facility to support the multi-year investment of approximately $200 million. Atlanta-based KBD Group is serving as general contractor on the project.

"We're increasingly hearing from customers and consumers that they want to do the right thing for the environment, and they need more options," said John A. Hayes, chairman, president and chief executive officer. "This product launch is aligned with our Drive for 10 strategy and is another step in innovating

to serve unmet needs. Using our years of experience and specialized expertise, we are proud to provide both our customers and con-sumers with another environmentally friendly and fun option in our industry-leading portfolio of aluminium packages."

In addition to its sustainability and recy-cling strengths, the aluminium cup is sturdy, durable, cool to the touch, and provides an elevated drinking experience. It also can be customized with logos and graphics. The cup is currently available through a limited pilot program with major venues and concession-aires across the US in a 20oz size produced in Ball's Westminster, Colorado, innovation facility. When the Rome plant is fully opera-tional, Ball plans to introduce additional sizes to round out its cups portfolio and intends to expand adoption of the cups to drinking establishments, parks and recreation, colleg-es and universities, hospitality, restaurants, business and industry.

Crown has started its first local initiative for student outreach in Batesville, Mississippi, a small town outside of Oxford, US where it operates one of 21 North American bev-erage can plants. Led by human resources manager Garry Morrow, its working with two schools to aid students’ education and teach them about the rich career potential found in industrial fields.

Morrow reached out to the Batesville schools to foster engagement between local students and our nearby plant, seeing an opportunity to make a positive impact on K-12 students in his area. Spanning from elementary to high school students, the programme aims to prepare students for successful futures, equipping them with real-world applications of subjects.

APEAL, the Association of European Producers of Steel for Packaging, has welcomed a fifth member, uniting all of the European producers of steel for pack-aging.

The new member, Liberty Liège-Dudelange, which operates three production sites in two countries, is a subsidiary of international met-als and industrial group, Liberty House, part of the GFG Alliance.

Tony Waite, president of APEAL, said: “We are delighted to welcome Liberty Liège-Dudelange to APEAL. It is a significant step in the drive to strengthen our industry, drive growth and improve the wider understanding of steel as a sustainable packaging solution, its unique properties contributing directly to its excellent recycling performance and its ability to preserve food and reduce waste.”

Jean-Francois Willem, head of quality and product development at Liberty Liège-Dudelange, said: “Europe is on a journey from a linear to a circular economy and we are all determined to help raise awareness of steel for packaging as a truly sustainable material and a positive choice for the environment.

“APEAL is the reference for steel for pack-aging in Europe – joining the association is therefore the right choice for our company and the other members of APEAL.”

As part of a campaign to keep plastic ring carriers for multipack beverage cans out of general waste streams, Hi-Cone, in part-nership with specialist recycling company TerraCycle, has launched a UK-wide initiative to facilitate their recycling and to inform consumers how they can engage with the process.

From today, consumers can now effort-lessly ensure ring carriers are kept in the recycling loop by downloading a freepost label from ringrecycleme.co.uk, then send-ing them to TerraCycle directly through the post. The scheme also offers the chance for consumers to set up public access drop-off locations to build a network of these public access drop-off locations across the UK to make it as easy as possible to recycle.

Hi-Cone, a specialist manufacturer of ring carriers, has been the driving force behind this latest campaign, and both companies are keen to see ring carriers put to further good use in products such as park benches, outdoor furniture and composite lumber, as opposed to entering general waste streams.

T. Kenneth Escoe, president of Hi-Cone, said: “We are extremely excited to have launched this new initiative with TerraCycle, which means that our product is now fully recyclable in the UK. This is a crucial step on our journey to recover and reuse as many plastic ring carriers as possible worldwide, and is the first of many planned phases to

Consumers can now recycle their beverage ring carriers

help communicate to consumers that these carriers can be recycled to great effect. The message is simple: the infrastructure is in place, now let’s work together to use it effec-tively. “Hi-Cone is fully aware of its responsibil-ities as a company that places packaging into the retail supply chain, and this latest project forms part of a broader proactive strategy to create a circular economy, within which the ultimate aim is to ensure recycled ring carriers can be reused for the same purpose again and again. This is a huge leap forward on the way to achieving that goal, and we are determined to make it a success.”

Many local councils do not currently have the capabilities to recycle all plastics through kerbside collection programmes, and it is not always clear which packaging formats are accepted. Initiatives such as these, therefore, are becoming vitally important.

The ring carrier recycling initiative is now fully operational. For more information: ringrecycleme.co.uk

Aluminium recycling hits record rates in 2017The overall recycling rate for aluminium bever-age cans in the European Union, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland in 2017 rose 2.3% from 2016 (72.8%), to reach an all-time record 74.5% in 2017.

Almost 31 billion cans were recycled in the EU and EFTA countries in 2017, representing a total of more than 420,000 tons of alumin-ium and contributed to the European circular economy. All aluminium cans are equally recyclable, no matter the colour, design, format or size.

Recycling aluminium consumes 95% less energy and generates only 5% of the green-house gas emissions than producing it from raw materials. Can recycling therefore saves the annual equivalent of approximately 3 million tons of greehouse gas emissions – equivalent to the annual emissions of a mid-sized European town like Belfast, Malmö or Thessaloniki.

Can manufacturers (members of Metal Packaging Europe) and their aluminium sup-pliers are confident that the European can recycling rate will increase further in the com-ing decade, primarily through a combination of improved plastic and metal drink collection systems and incentive-based initiatives such as modern deposit return and voluntary take

back (‘cash for cans’) schemes. The industry says it is “ready” to invest

in additional recycling capacities, providing other stakeholders, such as public and private waste management operators, are equally prepared to invest in additional and modern sorting facilities.

Leonie Knox-Peebles, CEO of Metal Packaging Europe, stated: “We believe that the new European calculation method will hardly impact the final recycling rates being achieved for aluminium beverage cans.”

Maarten Labberton, director packaging group at European Aluminium, added: “As we move towards our 100% recycling rate target, what matters most is the recycling yields; alu-minium is well positioned for the future given its very low losses during recycling.”

By signing up as members, these companies are setting an example for their suppliers to follow, and are helping to invest in recycling and recovery oper-ations through contributing to an annual Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) fee.

LOOKING BACK AT 2018 A large portion of MetPac’s energy and resources were primarily dedicated to developing the Industry Waste Management Plan (IndWMP) in partnership with JG Afrika in 2018.

This was an exhaustive and expensive process and MetPac-SA’s plan was finally submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) as part of Packaging SA’s confederation of plans.

The process has now been stalled with the ap-pointment of the new Minister of Environmental Affairs, Forestry and Fisheries and it is likely to be a while before the plan is ratified, approved and becomes statutory. Until then, MetPac-SA will continue with its drive and appeal to companies to become members.

MetPac’s immediate strategy for the coming year will be to establish the association as a credi-ble industry representative organisation that is fully supportive of the PSA Federation of Plans, whilst continuing to encourage new members to sign up.

We will continue with our public awareness cam-paign aimed at consumers and the metal packaging industry in order to increase collection and recy-cling rates, as well as encourage more role players in the metal packaging industry to join us. CT CC

According to an article in Recycling In-ternational website, entitled “Almost there! Europe closing in on 80% steel packaging recycling”, steel packaging recycling has

reached 79.5 per cent. APEAL was quoted saying that it was confident that the 80 per cent recycling target imposed by industry stakeholders, would eas-ily be met by the 2020 deadline.

The new figures suggest that for every 10 items of steel packaging put on the European market, rough-ly eight have been collected, effectively recycled and transformed into new steel products.

Looking at South Africa’s success when it comes to the collection and recycling of metal packaging, it’s clear that the recovery targets are in-line with international best practice. Even before Circular Economy became a buzz word we were already doing it in the metal packaging industry.

The post-consumer recovery rates of metal packaging has always been high in this country, thanks to the intrinsic value of the material. South African research house, BMi Research, has revealed that South Africa’s metal collection rate currently stands at 76.3 per cent. The metals packaging in-dustry has set itself the target of increasing this rate to 81.4 per cent by the year 2023. The industry in South Africa is optimistic that this target will be met.

NEW MEMBERSThe in health of the industry in South Africa has been proven, with the organisation having acquired two new members. These members have also signed up to belong to the Producer Responsibility Organ-isation (PRO) that represents the metal packaging recycling industry in South Africa

Earlier this year, two of South Africa’s largest retailers, Woolworths and Pick n Pay, submitted their membership applications. This was followed by Spar and Shoprite who also confirmed that they would be joining MetPac-SA, followed by Chill Beverages and Golden Era.

The applaud their decision to support the local metal packaging industry’s efforts to increase the collection and recovery rates of aluminium drink cans, canned food packaging made from aluminium and stainless steel, as well as aluminium foil prod-ucts, aerosol canisters, metal caps and closures etc.

The current health of the South African metal packaging industry has never been better, explains Kishan Singh, CEO of Metpac-SA

C M Packaging was founded after a man-agement buy-in from a former part of CarnaudMetalbox, the former Dutch can maker Numan. The company’s

focus is now on the market for speciality foods, dry as well as wet, but no conserves, and also in the market for high-value added promotional cans.

FLEXIBILITY IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS FOR CM PACKAGINGThe niche markets CM Packaging is aiming at require a lot of flexibility as the brand owners behind the brands try to diversify themselves with specially shaped cans, and the special features of the cans used. CM Packaging does the packaging development in-house, tuning closely with the customers, in return for long term contracts. In some product developments it turned out to be a big advantage that CM Packaging is also able

to offer plastic parts in addition to the can to add some specific property. CM Packaging is often able to offer such a plastic component enabling a special feature, as it acquired in 2007 a small injection moulding company. With the full integration of this company CM Packaging is able to offer plastic injection mould-ed components as part of a combination package, with some special features.

Herbert van de Beek, sales director at CM Packaging, takes up the story: “We have around 20 production lines for metal packaging and 22 injection moulding machines in our Dronten plant. However, the share of metal packaging in our turnover is around 80 per cent.

“Our production lines are for the greater part quite flexible, after some interference by our engi-neers to get them easily adaptable for the various demands of our customers. However, some of the

lines are dedicated for the production of cans for snus, spices and cacao.’’

In this way, CM Packaging is able to make packaging in all possible types, from round pro-motional packaging, deep-drawn square tins, to cans for vacuum preservation of the contents. Lids can be produced as slip-lids, with hinges on the body or with a pull-tab, in both plastic and metal.

The ability to design tailor-made special plastic parts on the modern injection moulding machines of CM Packaging, is also an advantage.

SOME EXAMPLES OF CM PACKAGING’S FLEXIBILITYThere are some nice examples of special cans for niche products at CM Packaging, which exem-plifies the company’s long-term commitment to flexibility, as explains van de Beek, using one of his customers as an example.

“For many years, we have supplied a lot of cans for butter, to customers like Royal Viv Buisma and Aveno, mainly for export destinations. These cans require special internal coatings, because of the fatty and salty contents.

Our customer Royal Viv Buisman needed a special can size with a very low height. Such a can size is quite difficult to make as it’s not easy to weld it.

“After some searching and testing, we bought a welding machine from CanMan and adapted it in such a way that it can do this special job. We find it extremely pleasing to satisfy a customer in this way. We as a team and in particular our creative technical director Kees Feuerstein says: ‘No it doesn’t exist’.’’

Another example is the cans for ghee, a bak-ing fat, made from pure butter oil, originating from the Indian kitchen: “This market has really exploded over the last few years as a consequence of the influx into Europe of immigrants from overseas,” he says. “The runs are rather small, so it takes some effort to follow the somewhat capricious demands.”

Even more challenging were the demand from

NOVEMBER 2019

HITTING THE MINDS OF THE CONSUMER TO FAVOUR METAL PACKAGING OVER PLASTIC Striking and very meaningful is the change of packaging material, namely from plastic to metal packaging, which CM Packaging observes in sub-markets; for example, spice tins.

“Spices were often packed in plastic packages or in cheap Chinese tins,” he says. “In the last few years with customers we developed some different spice tin shapes, sometimes with a plastic. These tins have become real runners with some 12 million tins per year. One customer even said the rather provocative statement to us that ‘plastic is dirty’.

“Again it was a real advantage that we were able to develop the total package under one roof. For the rest, we see the wish to design a metal package to replace a plastic package. Obviously the message of infinite perfect recyclability of metal packages hits the minds of consumers, brand owners and even retailers.’’

Van de Beek mentions another example of a brand that returned to metal cans: “The famous Buisman brand, caramelised sugar powder of which a spoonful enhances the flavour of coffee, has existed for more than 150 years. It started originally in cans, but changed to glass jars many years ago.

“Some years ago, the brand decided to go back to metal cans, because today’s nicely decorated can fits very well to the brand’s image.”

Van de Beek concludes the inter-view with a snapshot view of the

company‘s future.“I daresay, that thinks along

with our customers to help them to diversify their prod-

ucts. One of our slogans is: ‘We create your product and your message’.

“We are nobody’s com-petitor, certainly not for the big ones; we are simply too small a company for that.

“On the contrary, we still do contract man-ufacturing for the likes of Crown, Huber and Hoffmann.

And our important mes-sage is this: ‘if you have a difficult product to pack and you want to give it a high-end image, come and talk to us’.”

a German packer for goat’s cheese. They tried to use standard cans from various suppliers, but their efforts failed because of severe corrosion in the cans.

“No wonder, because salty water is added to the goat cheese in the cans,” adds van de Beek. “After the customer approached us, we did a lot of trials with various coating systems from different suppliers and in the end we succeeded. You can imagine how grateful the customer is!’’

A really stunning product development story is the creation by CM Packaging of a little shallow box for the packing of Cannadips. The com-pany Cannadips in Humboldt, California, US, describes these as ‘‘a healthy, smokeless alterna-tive for cigarettes and chewing tobacco’’.

The product is being put on the market in states in the US where cannabis is no longer forbidden and actively sold.

“I got a call from the owner of the company who was crossing through Europe, desperately looking for a good package for their products, which are somewhat similar in look and in consumption behaviour to the moist smokeless chewing tobacco product snus, for which we already provide packages,” he says. “In no time at all we were able to help the company out with a high-quality suitable tin box, which they are delighted with and makes their brand.

“We are supplying more than 1.5 million tins on a yearly basis.’’

NOVEMBER 2019

quality. In the UK, three quarters of all aluminium cans are recycled.

As with most things in life there is a hierarchy of choices, and not unlike the waste hierarchy, one could also consider a hierarchy of choices when considering packaged water. Here, tap water in refi llable containers would lead, with the diff erent pre-fi lled options following afterwards in terms of environmental impact and benefi t.

In the table on the left, some might argue for glass above or equal to aluminium as a fellow permanent material, but I feel that in this context, when consid-ering ‘on the go’ use, aluminium has the edge due to its robustness and considerably lower weight.

Canned water is clearly here to stay – just like metal.

Elsewhere, Environment Secretary Theresa Vil-liers has said that the current recycling labelling system, involving dozens of symbols, is confusing and holding back the recycling rate, a point of view that’s hard to disagree with.

Further, her department has stated its aim “to make producers label their packaging as ‘recyclable’ or ‘not recyclable’ so households can know more clearly what they can recycle”.

Clearly, government has fi nally understood that it’s just not enough for a material to be recyclable in theory, it has also to be recycled in practice. A good starting point might be to take stock of the ‘Metal Recycles Forever’ symbol.

This has been adopted right across Europe’s metal packaging sector where companies have co-alesced around a single, straightforward message that leaves consumers in no doubt of the material’s recycling credentials.

True, we are fortunate in that metal can be in-fi nitely recycled, and it is easy to separate from the waste stream using magnets or, in the case of alu-minium, eddy currents; but it does also satisfy the Advertising Standards Authority code of being legal, decent, honest and truthful.

Sadly, the same cannot currently be said of all recycling symbols and as such a review is to be welcomed. CT

In the US, two major global brands have an-nounced a switch of their bottled water into aluminium bottles. This fi rmly underpins metal’s infi nitely recyclable proposition and

market leading recycling rates. It also highlights the sector’s innovation in developing resealable and re-usable cans.

But inevitably, the news has not been without its detractors, who point a fi nger at aluminium’s initial production credentials and present tap water as the most sustainable option.

In my experience, things are never entirely black or white in the sustainability debate and while I agree that there is no disputing that tap water is cer-tainly best from a sustainability perspective, there is here, as with most things, shades of grey. People ‘on the go’ for example do not always have access to tap water when they want it, it is not always convenient to carry water and, when it is, the water still has to be carried in a container of some description.

So while I’m happy to agree that a refi llable con-tainer is preferable to any pre-fi lled pack, no matter how great its sustainability credentials, I would like to suggest that cans are the next best alternative: many are now resealable, they are easily collected for recycling, easy to separate in the waste stream, and can be recycled over and over with no loss of

Sales of canned water have increased fi ve-fold in the past year. But when it comes to water on-the-go there’s defi nitely a hierarchy of choices, and metal packaging has an important role to play, says Robert Fell

BEVERAGE CANS

NOVEMBER 2019

Overall sales of beverage cans were judged at more than $45 billion in 2018, and the global beverage cans market is likely to grow at a consistent

rate during the forecast period, owing to growing demand for metal packaging across the developed, as well as developing economies.

In addition, the growing beverage industry along with changing consumer preferences are among the key trends anticipated to amplify the overall sales of beverage cans over the forecast period. Currently, North America holds the leading share in the global beverage cans market, owing to significant demand for canned beverages in the marketplace.

The demand for alcoholic beverages, energy drinks and sparkling waters, coupled with rising urbanisation are projected to augment the growth of the global beverage cans market. For instance, Ball Corporation, introduced new Cameo End Printings for beverage cans in August 2019.

CANS CREATING GROWTH VERTICALSBeverage cans are used for the packaging of a wide range of beverages including, alcoholic beverages, carbonated soft drinks, sports and energy drinks and other beverages. Alcoholic beverage packaging is estimated to account for a leading share in the global beverage cans market. The beverage cans can protect the flavour of an alcoholic beverage and provide protection from air and light. The bev-erage cans for alcohol are also lightweight and can provide the best shipping efficiency.

Rising demand for alcoholic beverages like, beer, and cider in developed as well as developing countries are projected to lay a strong base for the significant growth of the beverage cans market. In addition, the manufacturers are focusing on provid-ing youth-oriented products including the ready-to-drink cocktails and stylish beverage cans such as, sleek cans and slim cans. For example, Ardagh Group, introduced a new tailor-made 187ml wine can in the European market. The can is designed to present and protect wine and wine-based drinks. It will attract the consumers who are looking for a single drink or ‘on the go’ alcoholic beverages.

Furthermore, according to the American Beverage Association, the demand for energy and

soft drinks is increasing at a rapid rate. In addition, with the rising awareness of health issues caused by carbonated soft drinks, the consumer preference is shifting towards the sports and energy drinks. The aforementioned factors are expected to create a demand for sports and energy drinks cans in the global market and the segment is expected to register an above average growth rate. The study also found that aluminium beverage cans contain three times the recycled content compared to glass or plastic cans. Many developed, as well as developing countries, are introducing regulatory reforms to raise the recycling rates.

According to the Aluminum Association in North America, the industry recycling rate for aluminium cans was 63.6 per cent in 2017 and consumer recy-cling rate for the same was 49.8 per cent. Hence, to cater to the rising demand of recycled aluminium beverage cans, the key players like, Ardagh Group, and Ball Corporation are focusing on expanding their production capacities for recycled aluminium cans. Ball Corporation alone is manufacturing more than 50 billion recyclable cans per year.

Furthermore, aluminium cans have an unpar-alleled safety record among all the material types used for beverage cans manufacturing. Aluminium cans do not rust and are a brilliant corrosion resist-ant products, owing to which the aluminium cans can be recycled and reused in beverage cans manu-facturing beverage cans market in the forthcoming years. EDITORIAL BOARD

It comes as no surprise to many of us within the can making industry that we’re potentially facing a shortage of skilled engineers, much like many industries within the manufacturing

sphere. There is no doubt that the can making industry has been shaped by a rich industrial heritage and draws on a number of traditional engineering skills honed and perfected over many years. This is something of which we as can makers and equipment suppliers should be proud. But what’s next and what does the future hold? At CMB Engineering, we are always looking to “the next generation of can making equipment”– which for us, combines two distinct ideas: a new generation of technology, essential to help our customers con-tinue to succeed; and ongoing investment in a new generation of engineers. For the continued success and growth of the can making industry, we must foster innovation through apprenticeship programmes. These programmes enable us to attract and retain the brightest young prospects, whose creativity and aptitude will help solve the problems of tomorrow. Just over 23 per cent of CMB’s workforce are either current or ex apprentices, something we are extremely proud of.

SUSTAIN AND RETAIN Part of our commitment to developing the next can makers of tomorrow is our involvement in the glob-al work skills competition. Our team of young engi-neers from CMB Engineering represented team UK for the 2019 WorldSkills Competition, held in Kazan, Russia.

Known as the ‘Skills Olympics’, the WorldSkills Competition sees the world’s best apprentices and students battle it out to win Gold, Silver and Bronze in their chosen skill. Our team finished sixth overall in their section and have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, what a fantastic achievement to be able to represent your country in front of the whole world.

Their category was one of the most challenging with many countries pulling out last minute and some not finishing the task at all, therefore we are filled with great pride that our team qualified and completed their project.

They are the fourth team of apprentices from CMB to have been selected for team UK, this selec-tion reflects the company’s highly advanced engi-neering skills, technical expertise and commitment to developing the engineers of tomorrow.

They were among 37 young trainees represent-ing the UK in 32 disciplines including industries as diverse as engineering, construction, creative arts and logistics. More than 1,600 apprentices and students competed in Kazan from around 70

countries. Both the opening and closing ceremonies were shown live on TV and streamed around the world, Vladimir Putin himself oversaw the closing ceremony and delivered a closing speech.

Representing your country on the world stage is no easy feat. It takes hard work, determination and a high level of skill and we are thrilled that our young engineers went to the finals in Kazan. Their selection is an outstanding achievement and a fine testament to the value and quality of the appren-ticeship programme we are proud to run at CMB Engineering. Our record of repre-senting the company in the UK at these finals is second to none and something we take great pride in.

The future of can making is exciting and dynamic, and its people that will enable us to har-ness new technologies, draw on the knowledge and expertise at our fingertips, and create excit-ing solutions that meet industry demand. If we are going to con-tinue to push the boundaries, we need bright, creative individuals that will enable the industry to meet these challenges. Nurturing talent brings great results – our record in the World Skills is testament to that. Here’s to the next generation! CT

AUTOMATION

We’re in the midst of an industri-al revolution. Industry 4.0 is an umbrella term that covers a multi-tude of technological advances that

are transforming the world’s manufacturing and production industries. This means that every indi-vidual machine, system and set of processes across the factory and throughout the enterprise will be integrated and connected to the internet. It’s as much an evolution of existing automated systems (like assembly line robots or packaging equipment), as it is a revolution.

This unprecedented level of connectivity allows information to be captured at every point on the production process and throughout the sup-ply chain. The resulting Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) data can then be analysed and managed to make every manufacturing sequence as fast and accurate as possible.

1. Defeating downtime through proactive monitoringManufacturers want peace of mind that their printers will remain operational at all times, and utilising Industry 4.0 concepts, such as integration and cloud computing, makes this feasible. By using an array of integrated sensors to automate system monitoring and send data to the Cloud, engineers can use this information to monitor their printers and detect any reliability issues.

With this type of technology, this can be done remotely – there is no need for engineers to go to a customer site to diagnose a fault. If a fix is required, engineers can turn up on site prepared with the knowledge and any spare parts they need. Additionally, the use of the Cloud will ensure engineers are automatically alerted of any faults and potential issues with the printers which enable issues to be managed faster and resolutions sought

AUTOMATION

before they impact the production line. The data collected by the Cloud can also be used to discover trends and provide root cause analysis that can be used to determine proper preventative maintenance in the future. A proactive approach and remote management is a powerful weapon in defeating downtime.

2. Empowering customers through Automation and IIoTIt’s not just support teams and engineers that can monitor printers; customers also have valua-ble insights into their printer operations at their fingertips.

With the use of a connected online system, a customer can check the status of their printers from any location, remotely diagnose faults, plan for refills and reorders by watching ink levels and usage. They can set alerts if, for example, ink lev-els reach a dangerously low level – and can take action before downtime occurs – all without phys-ically needing to be at the printer’s location. By monitoring cleaning and equipment maintenance schedules, the longevity of the printers and their components is increased. It’s also key to remember that users don’t have access to this information for just one printer, production line, or plant. The IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) allows users to com-pare the performance across all lines, plants, and sites, enabling them to take a global approach to optimise production efficiency.

3. Eliminating recalls caused by operator errorWhen errors are introduced, the impact can be det-rimental and significant. Consider that the average human makes one mistake for every 300 characters entered. Incorrect information entered on printers by operators results in costly recalls and reworks. It’s a significant cause of unplanned production down-time. Integrating printers with factory automation systems, such as MES (Manufacturing Execution System) and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) systems enables labelling data to be coordinated automatically without the need for human input.

Switching from manually operating each printer to the centralised management and automated coordination of jobs, labels, and data removes the risk of human error and can prevent coding and marking errors and can provide essential production data on your factory floor.

4. Seamless interoperability through standardisationCommunication standards enable the seamless transfer of data between equipment and factory systems to reduce setup, support, and develop-ment costs. They provide a universal method to collect and share production information across

Consider that the average human makes one mistake for every 300 characters entered

production areas; measuring and adjusting pro-duction throughput while reducing the risk of data inconsistency across different pieces of production equipment.

If you imagine a production line in its entirety, data and instructions flow through a variety of equipment that is often supplied by different com-panies – devices like printers, check weighers, vision systems and PLCs, and whole packaging systems from OEMs. By adopting a common data lan-guage, setup times are reduced, and there’s no need to develop software to interface between equipment – reducing development time.

5. Protecting consumers through serialisationThere are several solutions for unique identification, aggregation, tracing, and verification of products to meet the challenges of serialisation. These serial-isation products can generate encrypted, unique numbers, and enable multiple levels of aggrega-tion and integration with government databases, enterprise systems, and contract manufacturing organisations.

Online portals enable live tracking and authen-tication of products through the supply chain. If items are removed or changed during production, or damaged during transit, the associated serial numbers are decommissioned, and the data in the central repository is updated.

Scanning products at the point of purchase gives assurance to consumers and retailers. For example, pharmacies can validate medicines before dispens-ing, and customers (via smartphone apps) can check food products are safe before they purchase them.

Industry 4.0 is not just a revolution but an evo-lution of technology, attitudes, and techniques across every section of the world’s manufacturing and production environments. The benefits of the fourth Industrial Revolution are clear to see. From increased performance and profitability, to custom-er empowerment, to servitisation and serialisation, each advantage is working towards the ultimate goal for any production environment: maximum efficiency.

However, Industry 4.0 cannot be achieved over-night. Due to the breadth of changes, from both a cultural and technical standpoint, this transfor-mation will require time to take effect. AEROSOL

As is customary at The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association (BAMA) annual conference, which took place at Oulton Hall Hotel, Leeds, UK, the

highlight was the annual awards dinner. The metal packaging industry figured strongly among the winners on the night, and this year Turkish can maker Sarten Ambalaj sponsored the Awards and Gala Dinner.

Judged by a panel of experts, including Ben Carpenter-Merritt, policy manager, Manufacturing at Policy Connect, Olga Munroe, head of the Retail Institute, and Detlev Melcher, publisher and CEO of Media Service International, Ball Aerosol Packaging scooped the award for Aerosol Packaging, with its 360° Can. The can offers 360 technology offers symmetrical and asymmetrical shaping available over the full circumference of the can. Artwork is oriented to perfectly fit the relief area and complement the shaping, resulting in a can that is visually engaging from all angles while

providing additional grip for usability. The Aerosol of the Year award went to Simply

Breathe Limited for its AirForLife – Emergency Escape. AirForLife is an emergency escape device, embodied in an aerosol packaging assembly, which provides the user with a self-contained oxygen supply to aid in the escape from incidents such as a burning building or other situations in which breathing may become impaired.

Other awards of note included Church & Dwight Europe – Batiste Waterless Cleanser Range, which is reportedly a ‘game changer’ in the dry shampoo industry, giving consumers a shower like cleaning experience in Dry Shampoo. There was also a Special Recognition Award to sustainability direc-tor at Colep, Grant Coupland. Recognised by board members for his contribution to the industry, Coupland was a key figure in the creation of ACOA – an alliance between Colep, Pax in Australia and Diazo in Japan. Prior to his current role, he worked for CCL in Scunthorpe and remained with the

Cautious optimism for aerosol industry

Despite a great deal of uncertainty due to Brexit, the aerosol industry in the UK and Europe has cause for optimism. Alex Fordham reports

company following its merger with Colep. Commenting on the awards, Patrick Heskins,

BAMA chief executive, said: “Congratulations to the winners, runners up and all those who were highly commended and of course a huge thank you to all those who entered the 2019 awards.

“While we have we seen a record number of entries this year, what’s been most impressive is the breadth and standard of the products submitted.”

“It’s been great to see the aerosol industry addressing some of the biggest social issues of the last few years. In AirForLife we have an incredible innovation that has the potential to save many lives.”

CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS Heskins himself provided an overview of the association’s work, and interestingly reported that aerosol figures grew in the UK in 2018, against the backdrop of lower filling in Germany and France. He viewed this as resilience of the industry, and the “hard work and quality of supply” in the UK. He did however intimate caution due to the impact of Brexit, and the challenges ahead.

Heskins also highlighted that the aerosol industry is a successful one with year-on-year growth – but with current climate of environmental issues (Greta Thunbeg for example), this does need addressing. Monitoring commitment to the environment was important, but so too was maintaining jobs, which is a sustainability issue.

Heskins ended his presentation stating that the industry is planning as if there will be a no-deal Brexit. Later in the conference, delegates were advised to check out the Brexit checker tool: https://www.gov.uk/get-ready-brexit-check to help safeguard themselves.

Tony Waite, president at APEAL, provided an update from the steel association. Waite discussed the ever changing legislative landscape for pack-aging, how public debate is pushing the industry towards greater levels of circular performance, and why 80.5 per cent of all steel packaging – aerosols included – are recycled across the EU.

Waite was delighted to announce that the organ-isation has welcomed a fifth member, uniting all of the European producers of steel for packaging. The new member, Liberty Liège-Dudelange, which operates three production sites in two countries, is a subsidiary of international metals and industrial group, Liberty House, part of the GFG Alliance.

Some good work on the lobbying side has been undertaken, said Waite, as he stated that the organ-isation has been to confirm that in the new Packaging and Waste Directive on the Circular Economy, spe-cifically to do with landfill, “in no case more than five per cent of the total mass of the packaging unit – no extra obligations for steel packaging for aerosols”.

There was other good news with the fact that the steel industry has hit its own target on 80 per cent recycling by 2020; this was reached in 2017. The UK was at 77.1 per cent, so some room for improvement. However, Waite was hopeful that the Circular Economy legislation, would mean a shift to real recycling, as recyclable doesn’t mean recycled. He suggested that people need to think in more detail, e.g. is it entirely recyclable? Is it economically viable to be recycled? For APEAL, real recycling means recycling integrating into the product design.

DRY SHAMPOO- A CASE STUDY Nouryon’s Andrew Robertson made an interesting case study presentation on dry shampoo. Growth of Dry Shampoo, he said, was due to cost and time to style hair, consumers starting to skip washes, helped by the ease of use and environmental benefits. In 2018, there were over 450 new aerosol shampoo launches. This of course presents opportunities for the metal packaging market. CT

start-up market. Here I’ve shared just a few insights on how to make working with start-ups a smoother process from the outset.

1. THE SIGNIFICANCE OF PACKAGING If you’ve ever watched The Apprentice, you’ll notice that the importance of packaging is often ignored by entrepreneurs as part of the consumer experience. In many respects this is connected with market research and having an understanding of what the packaging signifies to the company’s target audience.

Let’s take a fairly straightforward confectionery, such as toffee. Toffee can be wrapped in different formats, which are perfectly functional and protects the contents. However, if you are aiming for the gift market, a more decorative container might be expected – a bespoke tin, perhaps.

Other than the US, the UK is unrivalled as a place to start and grow a business”. That was Simon Rogerson’s, chief executive of Octopus, line to the

Financial Times when he claimed the Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. According to the Centre of Entrepreneur’s Start-up Tracker, many agree, as over 660,000 new companies were registered in 2017 alone.

As both a packaging manufacturer and through our sister company, P Wilkinson Containers, a sup-plier and stockist, we work with companies from the fledging to the international multi-million-pound earners, helping to manage their packaging supplies for products including food, homecare, cosmetics and luxury promotional items as well as the indus-trial sector. This gives us a unique insight into developing packaging with true shelf appeal for the

START-UPS

How can can makers support start-ups?

In the early stages when working with a new client, especially a new producer, our account managers will get under the skin of the product and help to establish who the true target audience is and then use our 120 years’ worth of experience to advise on the best packaging options to suit.

2. HOLDING BACK INFORMATION AND UNREALISTIC FORECASTING Unrealistic forecasting is another challenge and really the only way to overcome this is to start developing a close relationship with customers. Each one of our clients has a dedicated account manager and that personal approach helps to overcome these trials. With a closer relationship, customers feel more comfortable being honest about what they can realistically commit to finan-cially when it comes to their packaging needs. This helps us to develop a packaging solution that fits their budget, minimising the risk to ourselves.

Similarly, there are lots of variables that will change swiftly for start-ups on their route to market – pack design, price point, even ingredi-ents. Following the first run of product, start-ups gain a lot more intelligence about their market sectors and as their supplier, it’s essential to be able to adapt as brands evolve. In the early stages we work to understand both the product and also the entrepreneur’s individual background. Ultimately, we invest in our clients as much as they invest in us.

START-UPS

For example, our London-based can making factory has the capacity to make bespoke features for cans – such as embossed lids with company logos. Whilst this requires us to develop specialist tooling, it is something we’re happy to do when we believe in the product as much as they do. In addition, having an assessment of the wider picture will also help us advise founders on the best packaging options to suit their current status.

3. SINGING FROM THE SAME HYMN SHEETOften, we’ve found that the most successful client partnerships are those with whom we’ve felt like kindred spirits. This was the case when working with Ben and Caroline Thornborough, founders of eco-friendly Thorndown Paints. The pair were keen to ensure the paint’s packaging represented the same ethos as the company – easy to use and environmentally friendly.

William Say’s solar manufactured metal paint cans were ideal and we were able to create a unique can with a wider diameter of 176mm than a standard 2.5 litre can, making it easier for decorators, DIYers and tradesmen to dip a brush into the paint.

The cans also have more air space above the paint level making it easier to mix and stir the paint inside when open.

We try to make sure that as a packaging supplier we have synergies with the brands we work with.

We work closely with each one of our clients to provide a range of bespoke services. For example, through our sister company, P Wilkinson Containers, we can hold packaging stock on our premises to combat storage issues and manage cashflow; help to adapt existing packaging to fit other formats; and deliver packaging within extremely short lead times.

If I’m ever asked for advice by a start-up it always comes down to: “Look for a manufacturer that fits your business needs, can offer a quick reaction and will have an account manager that believes in you and your product.”

4. FLEXIBILITY When working with start-ups, we look for ways to minimise the exposure to the business. One of the most effective ways for us to do that is to take a standard product that we already produce, such as a slip-lid tin, and offer additional services to make it bespoke.

At William Say, we have a number of different coloured materials we can use to make a range of cans and we can also create digitally printed labels, which are applied to these containers on site to give them a unique look.

Developing a product this way means that we can offer start-ups a smaller minimum quantity, as little as 500 pieces in one run, rather than an industry average of 20,000. This helps to reduce the cost of entry into the market and doesn’t

saddle start-ups with huge packaging costs when cashflow is limited.

We’ve recently invested in an in-line labeller, which has reduced our reaction time. For start-ups, the quantity of product needed can fluctuate wildly, and just one additional listing can double the amount. For instance, at our factory, the inline labeller allows us to print labels at the same time as the tins are in production – doubling our effi-ciency and helping entrepreneurs take advantage of any opportunity that comes their way.

With this in mind, we encourage start-ups to try to be open-minded with packaging designs. They may have the design for a one-off unique can design, which would be costly to set up and produce, but there may be other options out there which can help to reduce their exposure without a negative impact on their brand and sales.

Look to build a close relationship early on, one built on openness, sharing ideas and information, which will not only help avoid some of those clas-sic pitfalls, but a strong partnership will also create outstanding metal packaging. CT

and director of PT Cometa Can, one of the country’s leading three-piece can makers.

“Biscuit tin orders also are growing; Indonesia is strong in exports of biscuits in cans to China, Southeast Asia, the US and Europe.”

AN INCREASE IN MACHINERY In the last few years, a number of Indonesia Can Makers have begun investing in new printing lines to replace their existing two decades old printing lines. The new printing lines are now mostly

Can makers in Indonesia are expecting some additional orders later in 2019 as the economy picks up following political uncertainty over Indonesia’s

presidential election, which was held earlier this year.

Confirmation in July of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s re-election for a second term, following legal challenges by the opposition party, is help-ing to restore investor and lender confidence by ensuring the government’s economic and social development programmes can continue to move ahead.

Demand for tinplate cans has been fairly stable during the past few years although market condi-tions affecting different can categories have varied quite markedly.

While the use of some cans such as aerosols are growing, the use of others, paint cans for exam-ple, is declining due to substitution by plastic and other packaging materials.

Food canning is an important industry in Indonesia, both to supply the local market and for export. Canned fish and meat is popular through-out the country as metal cans provide protection both during transportation, as rough handling is common in rural areas, and while food is stored in traditional grocery shops or in the home.

Canned food consumption is rising as fami-ly incomes increase, allowing higher household expenditure on food items and consumer goods.

“The canned condensed milk market is grow-ing; also, canned evaporated milk and aerosol can products for home use. Evaporated milk here is packed in three-piece beverage cans,” comments Halim Parta Wijaya, chairman of the Indonesian Association of Tin Packaging Producers (APKKI)

Multicolour UV Line four to eight colour, to meet market trends toward more sophisticated colour-ful design. UV Multicolour Line Printing is get-ting more and more popular in Indonesia. As for UV varnish is still at the early stage of utilisation. Canned condensed milk market is still growing in Indonesia, “Condensed milk canners also are investing in new lines. They make their own cans and only buy in supplies when they need to.” Aerosol can production is growing to meet growing domestic demand for air freshener sprays and insecticide aerosols, in addition to table top cooker butane gas cans and paint spray cans. The aerosol cans is one of the fastest and enjoy a stable growth in the can industry. Rising labour costs and complicated labour laws are another factor encouraging can makers to replace their manual can making machines with automatic or semi-automatic lines. “There is no real expansion in can making capacity here, as there is a significant utilised can making capacity exist but more automation is being introduced,” Halim comments “Labour employment regulations are making things difficult for our APKKI association can maker

members as by law they have to increase salaries every year following the inflation rate and GDP growth of the country. Condensed milk canning companies are not the only can fillers to produce their own tinplate cans. The pineapple cans market is big as well, but almost all of them are for export market. There are only two big Canned Pineapple producers in Indonesia, Great Giant Pineapple located in Lampung Sumatera, is one of the world biggest Pineapple Cannery, and the other one is Riau Sakti Unit Plantation (RSUP) located in Riau area in Nothern part of Sumatera. Both the Pineapple Cannery have their own Pineapple plantation, as well as cans making unit themselves. Due to their location is far away, in a remote area near the plantation, they have to make their own cans, to avoid the high transpor-tation cost and the continuity of tin cans supply, as the canned pineapple is produced every day thru the year. Other big canner is the Mushroom Cannery. At the moment there are three Mushroom Cannery, but not very big scale. Due to world mush-room market is not favourable since many years,

actually the mushroom production in Indonesia reduced significantly as compared to the ’90, may be it’s left only about 1/3 of the past production capacity.

Rich in energy, mineral, forestry, agricultur-al, marine and other resources, Indonesia has Southeast Asia’s largest economy and is the world’s fourth most populous country with a population of more than 260 million people who live in the world’s largest archipelago numbering over 17,500 islands, more than 6,000 of which are inhabited. A LOOK INTO INDONESIAN CAN MAKINGThere are over 25 Can Makers in Indonesia. Most of them are located in Java Island, which is the country’s economic centre, with more than 140 million population. The bigger Can Makers, which have their own Coating & Printing line, are all located in two main cities, Jakarta (West Java) & Surabaya (East Java).

The total National Tinplate Consumption of Indonesia, is about 250,000 MT per year. This quantity have been stable for several years. Actually, the tin cans business have changed significantly since the last decades. Some busi-ness grow, some business decline, for instance the tin can for Decorative Water Based Paint in Indonesia practical finish, all move to plastic cans, but aerosol cans, biscuit cans & food cans grow to offset the lost in decorative paint cans.Indonesia’s domestic tinplate manufacturer, PT Latinusa, which is owned by a Nippon Steel-led Japanese consortium, is able to supply only about 60 per cent of domestic tinplate demand. The

remaining tinplate supplies are imported. That’s mean about 150,000 MT of Tinplate is supplied by Latinusa, while the rest come from import.

To protect domestic tinplate producer Latinusa, the government imposed 12.5 per cent import duty since many years ago. On top of it, there is another 4.4 to 7.8 per cent Anti Dumping Duty apply to Tinplate Import from China, South Korea, and Taiwan.

The Anti Dumping Duty which started from February 2014 for five years, but unfortunately Latinusa manage to obtain the extension of the Anti Dumping Duty for another five years, until February 2024.

Import of Tinplate mostly come from South Korea, China and Malaysia, some smaller quan-tity might come from Japan or Europe. As the domestic tinplate manufacturer, Latinusa only supply 150,000 MT per year, another 100,000 MT has to come from import anyway. Looking ahead, Indonesia tinplate can makers are hoping for modest steady growth in future as economic development spreads throughout the country boosting household incomes and increasing consumer spending.

“Indonesia’s economy has been growing at about 5 to 5.2 per cent for the past few years. Politically the country is stable except for the short period of uncertainty around this year’s presidential election in April,” Halim says.

“Our hope is that the overall tinplate can market will still grow here, but we do not expect fantastic growth. “Current can making investment might not for additional capacity, but rather for upgrading. A

lot of the existing can making equipment is old and can makers have got to install new lines with new features and follow the latest technology trends to support their customers.” Meanwhile, Indonesia’s can makers are hoping for an upturn in two- and three-piece fish cans orders in future after facing decreased demand for sardine and tuna cans for more than 12 months due to various reasons.

AN UPDATE ON FISH CANNING Meanwhile, Indonesia’s can makers are hoping for an upturn in two- and three-piece fish cans orders in future after facing decreased demand for sardine and tuna cans for more than 12 months due to various reasons.

Domestic consumption of canned sardines cur-rently is well below traditional levels following a health scare in mid-2018 involving import-ed canned mackerel brand that later found to contain sea worms.

Sales of all canned fish products have been severely affected in Indonesia since the canned mackerel food scare received wide TV cover-age. Canned fish sales also have been affected in Malaysia and Singapore where the same sea worms contaminated canned mackerel brand is sold.”

Immediately the contaminated canned mack-erel was publicised, people stopped buying all canned fish. This have very big impact on Canned Sardine sales in Indonesia. The problem actually come from imported canned mackarel, which is just about 10 per cent of canned sardine market. This unproper information from TV Media, have heavily destroy the canned sardine market. Sardine and fish canners could not send out their filled cans and they could not take the new cans they had ordered from our association members until end of 2018.

After Indonesia Fish Packers Association

approach to government for solution, govern-ment officials visited local fish packing companies to inspect and verify their packing processes, that actually comply with ISO & GMP Regulation. Soon afterwards Indonesia’s FDA, which is concerned with food safety, announced that Indonesian canned sardines and other canned fishery products were safe to eat.

“It’s more than 15 months now since the inci-dent. The canned fish market is coming back but we are not sure how long it will come back com-pletely; however, people have started to buy and eat canned sardines again and the supermarket shelf is again full of sardine cans,” Halim says.

Meanwhile, can makers also are hoping that problems facing Indonesia’s tuna canning indus-try also will be resolved in the near future fol-lowing the re-election of President Widodo for a second term. Since the last 5 years, after the New Fishing Regulation come out, the Tuna fish avail-ability from local catching become problem. The existing tuna fishing boats can’t comply the New Regulation with to operate in Indonesia waters, to catch tuna fish to supply the Tuna Cannery in Bitung, Northern Sulawesi. This situation have made several tuna Cannery in Bitung don’t have enough tuna raw material to continue production of canned tuna.

Bitung used to be Indonesia biggest tuna fishing centre, where several Tuna Cannery operates, including these from Philippines. Now some of the Tuna factory in Bitung have stopped operates, some operate at 20-30 per cent, and some just produce Tuna loin for export. This situation have last for over three years, have a very bad impact to Tuna cannery as well as tuna can maker.

“A lot of things depend on the government. Maybe there will be a change in tuna fishing pol-icy as we have a new government now; Presidents normally reshuffle their ministers after being elected.” CT

NEW EQUIPMENT

Crabtree releases new vision systemMetal decorating and coating equipment man-ufacturer, Crabtree, has launched a new vision system to automate the print fit process and increase accuracy and operational efficiency.

The SpeedFit camera is the initial offering by Crabtree’s new Automated Vision Systems arm – which has been set up to provide production-ready initiatives to solve industry challenges and enhance performance for all budgets.

The SpeedFit system allows operators to achieve greater accuracy during the print fit process than offered by manual methods, increasing productivity.

SpeedFit features colour-to-colour register control enabling users to achieve fit in a fraction of the time taken to perform this task manually – and with the use of fewer sheets i.e. 2 pass / 2 sheet process. This automated solution offers repeatable accuracy to 10µm – a substantial enhancement compared to manual operations, where accuracy varies from operator to operator.

The handheld wireless camera, which has lower cost implications compared to an inline camera, can be offered as a standalone sys-tem capable of operating between numerous print lines and/or specifically interfaced to the Crabtree FastReady console, enabling closed

loop register adjustment. In addition, as the camera’s PC stores job

file parameters, greater speed enhancements can be made as previous settings can be recalled for use The SpeedFit system has been developed with guidance from 3T Control, which has expertise in bringing to market automated industrial processes.

Alan Rutter, senior director at Crabtree said: “We’re delighted to be bringing this to market which has, as with many of Crabtree’s prod-ucts, been designed and manufactured with the end user in mind – developed by printers, for printers. As such it has a user-friendly inter-face ensuring that ROI can be recognised with minimal training.

“Creating our vision system meant a cross-over of knowledge, and a collaboration with a partner as equally as flexible as ourselves. When we look for a preferred supplier, or a joint venture, we look for companies that we can work with, those that demonstrate an equal level of pro-activeness and a pragmatic approach to real-life production requirements. We’re delighted to say this worked so well that we now own our very own Automated Vision Systems division that will look at indus-try demands and develop fit for purpose solutions.

“The result of our partnership with 3T Control is that we have produced an outstand-ing offering to the world of vision systems, and I look forward to working with the industry in rolling out this solution.”

John Robson, AV development engineer at Crabtree added: “Metal decorators worldwide are searching for quality and productivity enhancements in order to print faster and print better whilst still reducing costs. Our mission is to design and deliver premium print process control, utilising the highest quality innovative systems to offer added value and faster ROI.

“To collaborate with experienced automated vision professionals such as 3T Control cre-ates the perfect partnership as Crabtree offers specialist knowledge in the metal decorating and coating industry; together we’ve been able to use our expertise to develop products that meet both our ambitions delivering efficiency to the industry.”

Cask Global Canning Solutions – the inventors of micro-canning equipment for craft brewers – will return to this year’s BrauBeviale, held on 12-14 November in Nuremberg, Germany, displaying its range of affordable and compact can filling systems.

filled and sealed products in eye-catching, environmentally friendly and infinitely recyclable printed aluminium cans.

Russell Love, president, Cask Global Canning Solutions, said: “Our line of innovative micro-canning systems ranges from a manual filler that fills 10 cans per minute (CPM) to fully automated systems that fill 80-100CPM.

“And because we’re as obsessed about

quality as our brewery customers, our systems deliver best-in-class oxygen pickup as low as 15–20 parts per billion.

“With our partnership with Ball Corporation now expanding into Europe, we’ll be able to do there what we’ve done in nations around the globe: help craft brewers put their creations in cans, boost their sales and beer freshness, and transform the perception of canned beer.”

Our hardware upgrades enable our customers to stay at the cutting edge of technology and to decorate metal sheets at the highest level,” says Ivar Emde, product manager service at Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint, explaining the com-pany’s philosophy of keeping customers up to date at all times. Such upgrades can be small, simple functional improvements such as ultra-sonic double sheet detectors at the feeder.

On the other side of the scale there are extensive electromechanical upgrades such as complete line synchronisation for complex

tandem coating lines or the retrofitting of an EcoTNV (thermal exhaust air purification for drying ovens). Ivar Emde adds: “Whether small functional upgrades or large retrofits – customer benefits and short ROIs are decisive for all our upgrades. This makes existing printing and coating lines even better, faster and more sustainable.”

Machine maintenance More and more Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint cus-tomers are recognising the clear link between productivity and reliability on the one hand and the maintenance condition of their equipment on the other. The current Select Maintain pack-ages are in line with this market trend and help not only to solve unforeseen problems on the lines, but also to take preventive measures to avoid unscheduled machine downtimes. As part of the Select Maintain programme, not only preventive maintenance and functional checks are carried out according to the man-ufacturer’s checklist, but also, for example, annual safety checks on the ovens.

Technical status of the inspected machines or systems is carefully documented and

Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint’s service staff support their customers with a comprehensive range of service products to ensure smooth and

uninterrupted production of the printing and coating lines they support

recommendations for further improvements are discussed with the customer during every maintenance assignment.

24/7 hotlineMetal printers all over the world can now contact the Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint hot-line around the clock. Remote maintenance experts can call up diagnostic, software and control data via a direct online connection. This means that almost 80% of all cases can be solved successfully within a short time and the printing and coating lines are quickly ready for operation again. Without the need for a technician to arrive and without long waiting times. “In this way we can ensure fast and cost-effective access to our customers’ lines,” says Tolga Turan, head of technical service at Koenig & Bauer MetalPrint.

“And the best thing is: with the Select Remote package, our customers can secure access to our team of experts at an attractive flat rate,” concludes Tolga Turan. Of course, an upgrade to a modern broadband solution is available for all older machines that still have a conventional analogue modem.

Radnor Hills adds canned rangeUK beverage company Radnor Hills is extending its portfolio of products to embrace the can.

Spring water is a delicate, highly regulated and safe-ty-controlled product, and the company’s new packaging for its still and sparkling water range successfully achieves the challenge of meeting all quality regulations.

Recognising the benefits of the aluminium can – with its long shelf life, 100% recycla-bility, transport efficiency and leakproof/lightproof qualities – the company worked with Ardagh to bring cans into its packaging portfolio.

After intensive help with the complex tech-nical aspects of producing canned water, Radnor Hills is now able to fill at source, which is the ideal solution for beverage companies looking for complete control over product quality from start to finish, preserving the water in its perfect, natural state.

Ardagh’s customer technical service spe-cialists helped the company develop its at-source filling line, while the can was tested for compatibility with the sensitive product at Ardagh’s laboratory in Bonn, Germany, where its complete safety and suitability was determined.

Radnor Hills’ portfolio of canned drinks also includes its fully school compliant range Radnor Fruits, which is a blend of 45% fruit

Following two successful product launches this year, coconut water brand Vita Coco is launching a new canned CBD infused beverage in the UK.

The coconut-water based drink infused with CBD is available in three flavours: Lemon Cardamom, Apple Ginger and Cloved Orange and contain 100% natural ingredients. With just 23 calories per can and 3g of sugar, Vita Coco infused CBD contains 20mg of the chemical compound CBD – the highest amount of CBD extract currently available on the UK soft drinks market.

Vita Coco CBD will be available to pur-chase from Holland & Barrett from 21 November, along with other national retail chains and beacon health stores. Vita Coco’s new direct-to-consumer platform will also be offering a trial pack of all three flavours.

juice and spring water. The company has opted to make the most of Ardagh’s Coloured Tab range by selecting different coloured tabs for each product for easy identification from above. The co-ordinated designs feature a navy-blue tab for the still spring water, silver for the sparkling spring water, and yellow, pink, red and green for Radnor Fruits.

William Watkins, managing director and founder of Radnor Hills, based in Knighton on the Welsh border said: ‘Our passion is for making the simplest of things taste great, and thanks to the detailed development we’ve done with Ardagh, we know we can rely on our new can range to protect and preserve the fantastic taste and quality of our still and sparkling spring waters.’

Two all-natural and completely unsweet-ened Infused Waters are the next product in Radnor Hills’ pipeline. In the meantime, at the end of 2019 the still and sparkling canned waters are coming to the UK and will be widely available in supermarkets, while the Radnor Fruits range will be appearing in outlets including UK schools.

said: “The launch of Vita Coco CBD is hugely significant for us. Sales of CBD products are con-tinuing to grow globally and we are excited to be one of the first major drinks brands investing in this category.

“Vita Coco CBD is a complete-ly new product innovation for us and aims to provide a healthy, low-sugar option for those looking to embrace this popular wellness trend, underpinned with all the added benefits of coconut water and the trusted efficacy of our supply chain.

“With its distinctive flavours and profile, our CBD product is bringing new moments of con-sumption to the soft drinks category, whilst staying true to the factors that have helped our brand and category grow successfully over the last few years.”

About the increase in popularity for CBD products, Holland and Barrett said: “We are seeing an increasing appetite from our con-sumers for innovative CBD food and drink products, as this wellness trend shows no signs of slowing down and, in fact, it’s only getting bigger. To meet this growing demand, we are continuing to work with the most excit-ing suppliers such as Vita Coco, to offer our customers the best variety of products on the high street.”

M&S launches festive gin & tonic in a canMarks & Spencer has launched a festive ver-sion of its canned gin & tonic cocktail.

The seasonal cocktail is a mix of Indian tonic water with two measures of Christmas Dry Gin, which is flavoured with hints of gin-ger, cardamom and cinnamon.

The gin is handcrafted at Edinburgh-based distillery, The Old Curiosity, where master dis-tiller Hamish Anderson boasts a secret herb garden of 600 naturally grown and tendered varieties of herbs and flowers.

Cocktails in a can have been gaining popu-larity for a while, with sales up 50% year on year, according to M&S.

The 250ml Christmas Gin & Tonic cans are available in Marks & Spencer stores now for £2, in the UK.

Ardagh teams up with Swedish Cider Company

Humm Kombucha has unveiled its national expansion plans, making its canned kombu-cha available nationwide across the US.

Humm’s new cans include the brand’s top flavours: Blueberry Mint, Strawberry Lemonade, Mango Passionfruit, Coconut Lime, and Hopped Grapefruit.

Just like the brand’s glass kombucha bot-tle, each can will offer Humm’s verified non-alcoholic brew with two billion probiotics, 1000mg of Vitamin B12, that is also low in sugar and calories. Not only are the cans more portable, but they are also able to keep

The Swedish Cider Company is introducing a new high-definition can design to mark the expansion of its älska fruit cider range.

The 33cl cans have a photo-realistic visuals that will grab attention at point of sale, as well as reflecting the premium product inside.

Two already-popular flavours in the älska range – Raspberry, Wild Strawberry & Elderflower, and Nordic Berries – have been given a new updated look, and will be joined by winter newcomers Blood Orange, Cranberry & Cinnamon and Winter Spiced Plum & Apple. Each of the designs employs Ardagh’s Premium Print 2.0 technology to achieve a sharp, clean aesthetic, neatly

referencing the freshness of the fruits that flavour the all-natural drinks.

älska – Swedish for love – describes its brand ethos as ‘pure love and top quality’, using only the best quality natural ingredients and positioning itself at the top end of the market. Premium Print 2.0 has been part of Ardagh’s range of can finishes since 2016. The high-definition appearance is achieved through laser-engraved plate technology, which enables the crispest-possible graphics to be rendered in superb colour at up to 60 lines per cm.

To meet every customer’s specific needs, Ardagh’s in-house graphics team offer an

end-to-end graphics process, including art-work and ink development, reprographics and plate making, and have print proofing machines in multiple locations across Europe at which test cans are made and assessed.

The new flavours and the elevated look for älska reflect the company’s awareness of a growing cider market, as well as capitalising on the increasing trend for premiumisation of both beverages and packaging (Euromonitor). Sustainability of packaging for single-serve beverages is also of increasing importance to consumers, making the 100%-recyclable aluminium can a natural packaging choice for the älska range.

kombucha fresher for longer and are made up of more than 50% recycled material, lessening the environmental impact.

“Consumers clearly enjoy bubbles in cans so it makes sense for Humm to offer our deli-cious kombucha, our bubbles with benefits, in cans that are familiar and convenient,” said Matt Witherell, president of Humm Kombucha, which is headquartered in Bend, Oregon.

“We’re excited to give consumers a more environmentally friendly option so they can bring great-tasting, feel-good Humm drinks to more places.”

A sideways look at the world of can making

To honour World Mental Health Day, which took place on Thursday 10 October, we examines how the

can making industry can be doing more to protect the health of its workforce.

Once seen as the ultimate taboo, and masked as banter with unhelpful phrases such as ‘man up’ if someone is feeling a little glum, quite rightly society is tackling the issue of mental health. It’s now ok not to be ok, but are we as the can making industry doing to safeguard our staff ?

It’s estimated that one in six people in the past week has experienced a common mental health problem, and mental disor-ders affect one in four people. Taking the UK as a case study, suicide is the single biggest killer for men up to the age of 49, with about 6,000 suicides in the UK each year. So how many within our industry are suffering from mental health issues at the moment?

Let’s examine our industry rationally, and although pure speculation, our indus-try has to be fertile grounds for potential sufferers of depression and the like. As a predominantly male industry, long hours undertaken, and a vast amount of travel involved, it can’t be hard to imagine that

mental health is an issue that employers need to make a priority. It’s no coin-cidence that divorce rates of industry professionals will be higher than the aver-age, and the days spent away from family has to put can making professionals as most at risk of suffering from problems.

A simple internet search of high profile companies within the industry has a woe-fully lacking emphasis on mental health and the well-being of its staff. That’s not to say there aren’t companies doing good work, but more needs to be done. After all, a happy workforce is a productive one.

And I do have sympathy for employers. Most of the time those with mental health issues suffer in silence, so it’s not an easy issue to tackle. But a few simple guidelines and a strategy may go some way to helping your staff. There’s a wealth of information online from mental health charities, so be sure to take a look at charities including MIND and Rethink.

It is an issue that was once swept under the carpet and laughed off, but thankfully those days are over. As can making pro-fessionals, we pride ourselves on being a tight-knit and ‘community’ like industry.

So next time you see a friend or

colleague and you think they’re a little off colour, just ask them if they’re ok.

You never know, you may just save that person’s life… CT

It’s time to talk about it
