End-of-year Planning—As we reach the end of the year, please consider your charitable giving, and have our Shul in mind. Also, as this is the hardest time of year on the Shul's cash flow, please ensure your Shul obligations are paid up so our operations continue running smoothly. L'Chaim—The shul continues its policy of not purchasing liquor. If you like a l'chaim with kiddush, please donate a bottle of spirits to the shul, as the liquor cabinet is nearly empty. Mincha & Kriyat Shema—With Mountain Standard Time upon us, it becomes harder for some of our regulars to make Mincha. It would be appreciated if all men could make an extra effort to attend. Also, on Shabbat morning, the latest time to say Shema comes early (9:19 AM this week), which is before it is normally read at Shacharit. Be sure to complete your kriyat shema before this time. From The Rabbi's Desk

When אליעזר presents himself to thefamily of רבקה, he talks of the materialsuccess that אברהם has achieved bymentioning that ויתן לו צאן ובקר, וכסףand He – וזהב, ועבדם ושפחת, וגמלים וחמריםgave him flocks and herds, and silver andgold, and men-servants and maid-servants,and camels and donkeys. Being that eachletter in the Torah important, it is notable that the word שפחות is missing the letter "ו" in the middle of the word. Rav Naftali Zvi Yehuda Berlin sets down a general rule (העמק דבר בראשית פרק כז פסוק כט) that whenever a word is missing the letter "ו" it is an indication that the action was done in an incomplete manner. As such, the indication here is that even though אברהם had acquired many servants, he did not treat them as slaves, as he rightfully could have, but rather treated them as workers. It is interesting that when אליעזר is trying to “sell” the potential groom and his family, he does not merely focus on their wealth, but also the fact that they treat their help in a kind manner. There are two important lessons that we can learn from this. First, the definition of a “good family” is not just that the familyis wealthy. A family who is blessed with wealth but mistreats people is not worthy of admiration. Second, if we are fortunate enough to be able to afford household help, we should treat all those employed by us with respect.

KiddushThe Kiddush today is sponsored by EDOS.
