In the Epistle to the Romans, the Apostle Paul uses the analogy of the body to illustrate three important points: the variety of its members, the unity of the body, and the mutuality of the various members. God created God’s children to be unique individuals, each with different characteristics, personal preferences, specific gifts, and purpose. God created us all different and in Christ, He brings us into unity. We do not lose our individuality through uniformity, rather discover our own uniqueness and value the uniqueness of all others. We are called to be united as a people of God. And, being part of a body, we all have different functions that complement other parts of the body. We are mutually depen- dent on one another and the makeup of the whole body far outweighs the sum of the individual parts. We belong to the Body of Christ which is the church. Each part is necessary and each part blesses the body of Christ. We are called to belong to each other. We are, more than friends, a family, and so in Christ, we are one body, members one of another. As society and culture continue to raise issues that can divide neighbor and family, I pray that we seek unity in Christ, for He is the one who brings unity, reconciliation, and love. As the Body of Christ, we are not conformed by the world, but trans- formed by continuously seeking the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. Christ is the mysterious center of the church and when we seek Christ as a faith community, our differences will not divide us. He has chosen us, we have not chosen Him. When Christian people gather around the Word and sacraments, it is not our traditions, shared interests, or like characteristics that unite us, it is Jesus Christ. Let us be united in love. November 8, 2015 TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Today is Laity Sunday, a day the United Methodist Church sets aside each year to celebrate and recognize the work and ministry of all lay people. e rst recorded observance of Laity Sunday was in the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1929 called "Laymen’s Day." In the 1972 edition of the Book of Discipline, Laymen’s Day was renamed to Laity Sunday. e ministry of the laity is the work of mission or ministry to which each believer is called. Laity Sunday is a special day that invites lay people of all ages to pause and consider again their own unique call to disciple in carrying out the mission to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

e theme for this year’s Laity Sunday is Unity in the Body of Christ. In the Epistle to the Romans, the Apostle Paul uses the analogy of the body to illustrate three important points: the variety of its members, the unity of the body, and the mutuality of the various members. God created God’s children to be unique individuals, each with dierent characteristics, personal preferences, specic gifts, and purpose. God created us all dierent and in Christ, He brings us into unity. We do not lose our individuality through uniformity, rather discover our own uniqueness and value the uniqueness of all others. We are called to be united as a people of God.

And, being part of a body, we all have dierent functions that complement other parts of the body. We are mutually depen-dent on one another and the makeup of the whole body far outweighs the sum of the individual parts.

As the Body of Christ, we are not conformed by the world, but trans-formed by continuously seeking the good, acceptable, and perfect will of God. Christ is the mysterious center of the church and when we seek Christ as a faith community, our dierences will not divide us. He has chosen us, we have not chosen Him. When Christian people gather around the Word and sacraments, it is not our traditions, shared interests, or like characteristics that unite us, it is Jesus Christ. Let us be united in love.

May the peace of the Lord be with you always.

*Hymn Medley O How I Love Jesus ere is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth; It sounds like music in my ear, the sweetest name on earth. O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, because He rst loved me. Standing on the Promises Standing on the promises of Christ my King, through eternal ages let His praises ring; glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, standing on the promises of God. Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my savior; standing, standing, I’m standing on the promises of God. Standing on the promises I cannot fall, listening every moment to the Spirit’s call, resting in my Savior as my all in all, standing on the promises of God. Standing, standing, standing on the promises of God my Savior; Standing, standing, I’m standing on the promises of God. Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross; lift high His royal banner, it must not suer loss. From victory unto victory His army shall He lead, till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed. O How I Love Jesus (Chorus) O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, O how I love Jesus, because He rst loved me. *Armation of Faith e Apostles’ Creed Ms. Hunes I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord: who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suered under Pontius Pilate, was crucied, dead, and buried; the third day he rose from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Caring for ClarkstonServing our Clarkston Neighbors

Oak Grove’s Youth community opened the doors of Caring for Clarkston (C4C) in September 2011. is group designed, implemented, and created a sustainable ministry that builds passionate youth leaders by ministering to refugee families in need in the

Clarkston Community. Each month they serve a number of families providing food and baby items. Join us on November 9 to hear story after story on how God has, is, and will continue to provide. Menu:: BBQ pork, baked beans, potato salad, cookies, drink, $8 Reservations due by 10 a.m. November 9 (www.ogumc.org).

We are excited to announce an adult mission trip to Costa Rica April 9-16, 2016. Our youth have certainly enjoyed working in Baja Tejares over the past few years and have encouraged our adult community to go, see, and experience the people that they have come to love. We will work with Faithful Servants Mission (FSM). is community is made up primarily of Nicaraguans who ed political persecution and economic instability seeking a better life for themselves and their children. Initially, the Costa Rican govern-ment provided for them; then they became "outsiders" and a burden for the people of Costa Rica. Abandoned and poor, these people subsisted under the worst of condi-tions – living in wooden shacks with dirt oors and an unemployment rate of around 80 percent, with most surviving on day labor, prostitution, or drug tracking.

Our team will work alongside local residents to complete light construction projects and oer Vacation Bible School type experiences for the children. An informational meeting will be held on Sunday, November 22, at 12:15 p.m. in room 217. Please contact Mark or Sharon Spears ([email protected]) or Amy Morgan ([email protected]) for more information about the trip or to sign up to participate.
