It is always very gratifying when Shanghai returnees compliment us on how fresh Shanghai Centre looks and how it exudes so much vibrancy. The Shanghai Centre management team is committed to continuously improving the living & working environment here and I can tell you -we do this with a lot of passion!

This year has seen a record number of improvements to the facilities and amenities around Shanghai Centre, from the apartment lobby upgrades, upgraded hotel function areas, the hands-free parking system to the openings of Lapis Thai, Urban Retreat, CVRVE Lounge, WHS, Simply Life, LensCrafters, Starbucks’ patio, W.W. Chan & Sons, Christian Louboutin and most recently Anna Banana.

What can you expect next year? Well this winter we are replacing the central cooling plant to ensure Shanghai Centre’s future air conditioning demands will be met. By utilizing the latest technology, we not only will provide tenants with the most reliable air conditioning but we will be also lowering our environmental footprint at the same time. Residents can look forward to relaxing in a brand new Reading Lounge complete with massage chairs and a soothing fireplace. And in case you are craving more food options, Crepe & Co. will be opening shortly after Chinese New Year between Din Tai Fung and Starbucks. For Japanese food lovers, Hanagatami will be completely transformed with a new concept from renowned architect Arata Isozaki. We have a lot more exciting news for next year however I am going to leave that as a surprise for later!

It’s a common myth that people are more likely to commit suicide over the holidays (statistics show that the number actually drops sharply during the Christmas season), but the reality is different for those of us living overseas. Often far away from family and friends, expats

are perhaps more likely to face feelings of isolation and depression. “There’s definitely a spike in the number of calls we receive during the holidays,” says Lifeline Shanghai volunteer Sarah Lowe. “A lot of people talk about how the weather is depressing them, or how it doesn’t feel like the holidays.” She also notes that winter is the end of the “honeymoon” period that many newcomers experience after moving to a new country.

Mostly, Lowe says, the people who call her just want someone to talk to. Lifeline Shanghai started in 2004, offering a free phone line that’s open daily from 10am-10pm in an small office space donated by Shanghai Centre. Staffed by trained volunteers, the

service receives about 70 calls per month. Lowe describes most of her job as “active listening, and finding out what the person’s needs are.” She says there’s no set profile of the kind of person who calls in, rather it could be anyone from tourists and teenagers to professionals and stay-at-home spouses. And the calls aren’t just limited to emotional support. Lifeline Shanghai also has a full database of services for foreigners living in Shanghai, and they’re more than happy to hear from people who want to volunteer.

Dragonboat RaceFor the fourth consecutive year, Shanghai Centre residents, office tenants, staff and hotel employees showed off their teamwork-skills at the Dragonboat Race on Dianshan Lake. The event was even more exciting than previous years as we were part of a city-wide company race this year, with a total of 26 boats competing. We’ll need a bit more practice to beat the competition, but it was still a fun-filled day! Congrats to the Canadian Consulate for winning this year’s race, beating the invincible US Consulate team for the first time ever… The Shanghai Centre staff team closed off the top three. Way to go teams!

HalloweenWhat a parade of interesting characters we had at our Halloween party: fairies, angels, witches, skeletons, cats, tigers, Spidermen, Transformers, Smurfs… you name it, we had it! The events team and the hotel staff did a fabulous job in transforming the Shen ballroom into a creepy haunted house, and the f&b was excellent, as usual. Great job Sophie & Jessie!

First Aid CourseYou can’t be prepared enough! With that idea in mind, the team from Parkway Health conducted a comprehensive first aid and CPR seminar for our residents. All attendees passed the course with high marks and received a certificate of completion. With 12 certified residents in the building, we can all sleep more relaxed now…

Leasing Awards at Lapis ThaiLapis Thai was the perfect setting for our annual Agent Appreciation event. This year, the luncheon was combined with an awards ceremony for the top sales agents for both residential and commercial leasing. Thanks to everyone for your continued support!
