SAFE SCHOOL ARRIVAL PROGRAM

Please leave a message by calling the school at 416-393-5273 when your child will be absent or late. Please make sure that all students who arrive late check in at the front office.

STUDENT INFORMATION

Please ensure that all information regarding your child is up-to-date. We need to have the CORRECT HOME TELEPHONE, CELL NUMBERS, WORK NUMBERS, HOME ADDRESS AND EMERGENCY CONTACT. If these numbers change please let the school know promptly, IN WRITING.

LUNCH ROUTINES Students who remain at school for lunch (11:45-12:45) may NOT LEAVE THE SCHOOL GROUNDS anytime during the lunch hour. For safety reasons, we highly discourage parents/guardians from allowing their children to leave the school property unsupervised for lunch.

PIZZA LUNCH

Pizza lunch registration is now closed for this first portion of the year and registration forms for January 2018 be sent at the end of November 2017.

Rosary Apostolate

It continues to be a joy for staff and students to pray the rosary together with Mrs. Morin, Ms. Tillo, Mrs.

Mendoza and their colleagues from the Rosary Apostolate. We very much look forward to our monthly

visits, culminating in the Crowning of Mary, as we continue our relationship which has its basis in prayer

and an active response to the Trinity and Mother Mary. Thank you to the women of the Rosary

Apostolate for their selfless donation of time and guidance to our students, mindful of the first Catholic Graduate Expectation, “A DISCERNING BELIEVER

formed in the Catholic Faith community who celebrates the signs and sacred mystery of God’s

presence through word, sacrament, prayer, forgiveness, reflection and moral living.”

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL A reminder that all visitors must enter the school building through the front doors by using the video monitoring system and sign in at the main office. Entrance through the school yard doors or other entrances and exits, i.e. the Kindergarten wing is strictly PROHIBITED. In the interest of safety for all students and to ensure that classes are uninterrupted, we need everyone's total co-operation and understanding on this matter. If an item is being dropped off for your child or pick up is required for an appointment, please come by the office. We will contact the class directly. If you need to speak with your child’s teacher or the principal, kindly call and make an appointment. We are glad to meet with you at a mutually convenient time.

APPROPRIATE DRESS CODE POLICY

All students are expected to come to school dressed appropriately and in a manner that reflects the aims and atmosphere of a Catholic school. Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School has adopted a BLUE AND WHITE DRESS CODE.

DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP STUDENTS For the sake of safety, we ask that in the mornings you drop off your children in the appropriate sections of the school yard and leave them with our staff. This will help the students develop routines and it will also help our staff ensure a safe school yard. We kindly ask that parents do not enter the Kindergarten yard, most notably the anchored fenced area at the north east side of the JK/SK yard to maximize visibility for our staff during morning supervision. The bell rings at 9 a.m. Please ensure that your child is dropped off no earlier than 8:45 a.m. Parents should be aware that the supervision of the children remains their responsibility before and after school.

Remembrance Day Service for OLW

Nov. 10, 2017

Welcome to Sgt. Castillo from the 32 Canadian Brigade Group as we anticipate his visit with students from Year 1/Year

2 to Grade 8 to remind us of what sacrifice means.

Community Helpers Program

Firefighter Mr. Mike Papeo, a public educator with Toronto Fire services East Command will be visiting the Year 1/Year 2 classes and the SK/1 class on November 9th. His mission is simple: to educate students about how they can stay fire safe at home. Mr. Papeo will be sharing his knowledge through a practical examination of fire alarms and how they work, calling 911 and home fire escape planning, and. reviewing procedures around match and lighter safety.

Safe Schools/Healthy Schools Update

As part of a renewed goal to engage students as important partners in sustaining a safe and welcoming school climate, in conjunction with the TCDSB, Toronto Public health nurses, Silence Lai and Alanna Barr, our resident nursing student from Ryerson, Mlle. Simran and the school, OLW will be implementing a proven leadership initiative as a response to ensuring safe schools, reducing bullying and promoting physical activity. The program is called PALS (Playground activity Leaders). Interested students from Gr. 5-7, 15 of them will be trained on Nov.1st by TPH and school staff. PALS is a student led program in which children are trained to plan and lead fun and safe activities at recess and foster inclusion and activity. Two parent/child workshops are in the works to address the topic of connecting with your pre-teen and drugs, and a Family Fitness Night for June 6 (Progrant).

Visit from Officer Jennifer Wilson (CSLO)

Officer Wilson will be in November. Our Community School Liaison Officer will engage the Grades 5 and 6 students in conversation on the topic of the digital footprint/safety and bullying. Partnership with Covenant House: Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School is very pleased to continue our partnership with Covenant House, “a national leader in the issues of at-risk, homeless and trafficked youth.” On October 23rd, Ms. Fiona Jack will be visiting with our grade 6, 7, and 8 students to educate and advocate for much needed change to address current issues facing youth in our province. Specifically, the “Trafficked” and “Reality Check” workshops greatly support the Ontario Ministry of Education’s Student Success, Safe Schools and Equity and Inclusive Education strategies and will equip our youth with timely information to make informed decisions and seek assistance when necessary. Specifically, the “Trafficked” presentation introduces the dangers of human trafficking and explores how youth are “recruited and how unsuspecting young people, mostly girls, are being lured online, in malls and from school yards.” The “Reality Check” presentation, geared for students in Grade 8, emphasizes a de-glamourization of street life, looks at empathy, identifies key resources where youth can obtain assistance, and encourages students to lead, volunteer in their communities and give back.

Épelle-Moi French Spelling Bee

The coaching team of M. Etienne, Mme. Suzan, Mme. Thokoly and Mme. Mari Berje have started their intensive training of all interested students in the primary grades to the junior grades from Grades 2 to 6. Training to acquire mastery of the first 30 words in both spelling guide levels has begun. The teachers will be narrowing the field and engaging the students in healthy competition as they begin to test the skills of students. Students who are interested in representing Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School in this year’s Épelle-Moi Canada French Spelling Bee competition to be held from March 24th to April 8, 2018 will be selected from hopefuls during several rounds of spelling bee elimination play. Selected students will complete a registration form that has since been provided by Guilène Fotso, EAO, Coordinatrice des activités. Bonne chance tout le monde!

High School Visits

Mary Ward staff and students visited on October 4th to deliver their interactive presentation/open house and explain the programming, as a centre for self-directed learning. They went over what makes them unique, from award winning co-curricular activities from journalism, fil, robotics, debating to how they integrate their values in the Specialist High Skills Major program.

Forest of Reading 2017-2018 and French Literacy “New selections from Prix Peuplier, Prix Tamarac and Tamarac Express have arrived from Tinlids, such as, “Ma famille 3+1=7” by Isha Bottin and “L’arbre maléfique (la rue du Lac-Frisson)” by Frédéric Raymond, and the school is currently cataloguing and promoting the items thanks in large part to Ms. Liu the librarian, who is overseeing the kick off of this year’s program. The school has also currently purchased $2000 of new French reading material suitable for JK/SK to Grade 8 from Renaud Bray: consisting of Canadiana, chapter books, graphic texts, non-fiction, popular series translated into French, etc… for circulation.

OLW has taken the food waste pledge and registered for the Waste Free Lunch challenge on Friday, October 20, 2017, as part of Waste Reduction Week through the Recycling Council of Ontario. The Waste-Free Lunch Challenge is a school program that encourages elementary schools to decrease the amount of garbage they produce, and educate students, staff, and parents about waste reduction.

Guidance Corner - November

As the time for Progress Reports gets closer, help your child focus on their Learning Skills and Work Habits. Responsibility, Collaboration, Initiative, Self-Regulation, Organization and Independent Work are key skills that help students take ownership for their learning, and allow them to be more successful in all areas of the curriculum. More information on the Learning Skills and Work Habits and how to help your child develop them, can be found at the following links: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/policyfunding/growSuccess.pdf (pgs. 10-14) http://www.fslhomeworktoolbox.ca/homework_tips/learning_skills_and_work_habits.php November is also Bullying Prevention month across Canada. You can help your child recognize the signs of bullying and what to do if they or someone they know is being targeted. In our age of technology, bullying can happen electronically, as well as face-to-face. Be aware of your child's activities online. Building empathy and compassion for other people's feelings, is key to stopping bullying before it starts. Here are some helpful websites you may wish to visit: http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html http://edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/bullying.html https://www.tcdsb.org/ProgramsServices/SafeSchools/BullyingAwarenessAndPrevention/Pages/default.aspx It's a busy month for our Grade 8 students and the transition to High School! Open house nights have been taking place, and parents of Grade 7 & 8 parents are encouraged to visit the local high schools to see all the amazing programs and opportunities that are available. Application forms for Grade 9 were available as of October 23rd and are due back to your child's teacher by at the beginning of November. Please complete Section "C" carefully and make sure signatures have been included before returning the form to school. Please note, the closer the high school is to your child's elementary school, the higher the chance of acceptance. If your child is redirected, there are no guarantees of placement at the alternate choice school. The redirection will be to the closest high school that has space. Also, the TCDSB does not have access to information for high schools outside of our board. You will be receiving a Transition Guide for Parents, which contains important information regarding the transition to high school. There are translated guides in a number of languages, available upon request. School Cash Online: Our Lady of Wisdom CES has been included in the Phase III KEV implementation. As part of this school cash online initiative (KEV), the Business Services Dept. has begun its consultation with schools in preparation for the transition scheduled for mid-November 2017. President’s Choice Children’s Charity Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School has been awarded the PCCC School Nutrition Grant in the amount of $3500 to support the Universal Snack Program for the 2017-2018 academic year.

Athletics Update

Running Club and Cross Country

Congratulations to the Wisdom Warriors Running Club. Almost every morning, since mid-September, we've been waking up early to run distances of 1.5 km up to 3 km around the Terraview-Willowfield Park. We had a lot of fun running for the love of it! The students that really enjoyed themselves and were dedicated throughout the season should be running on a weekly basis in order to become even better runners! Congratulations to our Wisdom Warriors cross-country team who has also been training for a few weeks now for their divisional, regional and city finals. Of our initial 90 participants, we had 10 students qualify for the city championships! Congratulations to all of this year's finalists. We are very proud of you! (Caleb B, Zoey B, Abby B, Patricio V, Ethan S, Joshua M, Grace M-L, Kristal E, Jayden C and Samantha S) Thank you as well to all of our parent volunteers throughout the season!

STUDENT LEADERSHIP

Hunger + Food Drive = Impact Thank you to the Me to We Committee at OLW for coordinating the We Scare Hunger Campaign as one of our local initiatives. The goal is to “come together to collect food to help scare away hunger.” Our school community is seeking donations of non-perishable foods during our local food drive to contribute to our local community and “raise awareness of the root causes of hunger.” All proceeds will be donated to our St. Francis Table, a non-profit Catholic organization that focuses on outreach to those in need.

Student Council: Bonne chance to all of our students as they prepare for class representative positions in their respective junior and intermediate classes. Students will be presenting to their peers a concours which outlines their platform, goals for the upcoming year and personal qualifications. From this group of class representatives from Grades 5-8 will emerge the executive body of the OLW student council with all results in by November 9th and a first scheduled meeting for November 16th. The school community looks forward to the great work that will surely unfold as students exercise their decision making and have their voices heard to complement initiatives linked to physical activity, social justice, fundraising/spirit days and an ethos of compassion for all.

Calling all Ghouls, Unicorns and Superheroes! What better way to invigorate the body and the mind during these chilly final days of October, as we usher in the fall temperatures that characterize November. Students donned their Halloween finest, as they took to the gym floors and danced to Halloween playlists put together by DJ Kilo. All of our students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in aerobic exercise by demonstrating their Halloween dance moves, whether going low or high energy. Thank you to all parent volunteers for transforming our gym into our haunted dancehall!
