The Other Side...“If you could have a super power, what would it be?” I’m sure most of us has came across that question, and usually our answers ranged from invisibility and flying, to healing others, or even losing weight without dieting. Recently I can’t help but wishing for one thing, which is to be able to see the other side of things, and to have the ability to change roles with people (okay two things). Now you’re probably recalling the movie ‘Freaky Friday’ or Adam Sandler’s ‘Click;’ yes it’s not exactly a brand new concept; however, in real life, I just find it something that’s getting harder and harder to do as we grow older. And no matter what, we end up judging and jumping to conclusions that might cost us a lot.

So what if we were actually capable of changing roles? Let’s think about it for a moment. Imagine if you were able to change roles with your mom or dad

when you’re a teenager? Imagine being able to feel firsthand their heart aching from all the worrying about you and your future? Being able to

see how much of their lives were consumed by and spent on you? Would you acted out the same way? Would you yelled back at

them? Would you sneaked out with your friends or stayed out late? Now, what about that teacher you hated and called names for being “too strict” or whatever? Imagine being able back then to have a walk in his/her shoes; feeling his/her insecurities, having to live with the frustration of being underrated and underpaid; having to put on a poker face and ignore all the disrespect they encounter in classrooms. Now what about your ex? Your boss? Or the waiter you scolded for getting your order wrong? Maybe the guy/girl

you envied assuming they got it all? The list goes on..

Same thing applies to situations. What if by just snapping your fingers you would be able to see the alternative scenario? or even better live it! And I mean like a full blown 3D version of

it. For instance, what if instead of losing it because you alarm didn’t go off costing you a job opportunity, you get the chance to

see what would’ve have happened if you actually got in the car on time? And you see that the tire would have blown out causing the

car to flip. Wouldn’t you instantly feel better? Wouldn’t it make perfect sense? And what if in time of grief and loss, you would actually be able

to see for yourself that it’s the right timing? That if your loved one lived, they would’ve suffered serious illness and had to endure pain? What if you

were able to feel your hopelessness then? Wouldn’t it save you some of the anger and bitterness? What about the guy/girl who dumped you? The promotion you didn’t get? The flight you missed? Again, the list goes on..

My point is that we humans have the tendency to believe that we got it all but in fact we don’t; well, most of us don’t; okay maybe only me, I don’t know! All I know is that as I grow older, I find it harder to accept the flow of things as they happen. Many questions are left unanswered and tons of “what ifs” keep popping up. “The older I get, the less I know” is the perfect description for it I believe. And also believe that maybe, just maybe, seeing the other side of things, or more accurately living it, would help putting some of those “what ifs” to rest, don’t you think?

LADYBIRD LOVESValentino’s spring/summer ready-to-

Wear ColleCtion

Fashion

Valentino takes us to africa! Yes we love Valentino! Again and again and again. Do you think there is a way to get over this one? Because we certainly don’t know how! Valentino Haute Couture is like a phenomenon on its own, which is a fashion fact; but what the Parisian fashion label been offering us lately through its ready-to-wear (RTW) collections surpasses our expectations. With every season and with every collection, the luxury label, which is about to wrap a total of 63 wonderful years in the business, takes over our hearts with its subtle lines that combines the on-going hippie vibes with class; something that everyone been trying, yet only few succeeded to do right and stand out.

Page 15: November's issue 2015

November 2015 | 13

Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the current fresh creative forces behind the label, have been pretty attached to their Italian culture, a thing that been translated through their work since they took over Valentino. Yet for this one, the partners in crime have wowed the audience taking them on a mesmerizing exploratory journey to Africa! Piccioli and Chiuri were inspired by immigration and the rising issues surrounding it, which resulted in those walking art pieces that rocked the runway. Black is definitely the dominant color with variety of tribal print clashes, and with fabrics that range from leather to the “leaving-nothing-to-the-imagination” sheer. >>

Yep, we’re biased in case you haven’t noticed, but just for the sake of being subjective and all, we’re obligated to mention that not all people were exactly that excited about the runway show, which generated quite the fuss on twitter. The label has been accused of “culture appropriation,” for not having African models representing the culture being conveyed. We honestly believe that the whole thing is being blown out of proportion; yet again it’s fashion, and things are rarely being put into its right proportions in the industry. So let’s just focus on the designs and the collection; here are our favorite looks:

Balmain’s master mind, Olivier Rousteing, has summoned his army once again for the most anticipated designer collaboration with H&M. Despite the fact that the collection has been leaked on social media just days before the show, Rousteing’s girl-power army managed to dazzle their way to our hearts. Super models Kendall Jenner, Jourdan Dunn, and Gigi Hadid have led the subway terminal themed show, followed by the rest of the cat-walking army; then The Backstreet Boys took the stage and wrapped the night with a medley of their greatest hits, bringing the 90’s groove back.

rose Bertin Marie-Jeanne Rose Bertin, or the “Minister of Fashion” as critics referred to, was a French designer that despite her humble beginnings, had became the designer of the nobles and royalties of her time. Shortly after their introduction in 1772, Bertin became friends with the Queen of France at that time Marie Antoinette who was fond of her creations. Bertin started designing hats for the queen at first, then started designing her gowns as well, which paved the road for her to be the master mind behind popularizing french couture.

charles freDerick Worth Also referred to as the Father of Haute Couture, Worth was the founder of the very first official designer label. He also was the first to showcase his designs using models instead of wooden mannequins. Due to his forward thinking his label became the “one to wear” for all the elites and public figures triggering the whole celebrity designer trend.

Matthaeus schWarzAn accountant from Augsburg, who happenes to be the creator of the very first fashion book in history according to researchers; a book of illustrated paintings of himself. Over the span of 40 years, starting at 23 till his 63rd year, Schwarz commissioned watercolor illustrations of himself, recording his outfits and describing what he wore; which gave us the first documented record of its kind.

conDé Montrose nastThe New York native is the founder of Condé Nast Publications, rings a bell? No? Oh excuse us, What about the owner of Vogue and Vanity Fair? Yea now we’re talking. Arthur Baldwin might be the founder of Vogue, but thanks to Nast’s revolutionary ideas, Vogue has been the fashion bible we have grown to love since he bought it back in 1909.

Baron aDolphe De MeyerMeyer was hired by Condé Nast as the first official Fashion Photographer for the American Vogue in 1913, making him among the first to revolutionized fashion commercial photography. Then years later Meyer was appointed as Harper’s Bazaar chief photographer. Sadly most of Meyer’s prints was destroyed during World War II, but few has survived to remind us of his authentic work.

Diana VreelanDBefore the Anna Wintour’s vogue era, there was the time of Diana Vreeland. Vreeland kicked off her career as fashion columnist for Harper’s Bazaar, and then worked as an Editor till her resignation in 1962. During her years at Harper Bazaar, Vreeland helped styling the first lady at that time, Jacqueline Kennedy. She then moved on to be Editor-in-Chief of Vogue in 1963, where she mastered the whole “Devi in Prada.” Vreeland ended her career as a consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, after being fired from vogue in 1971 due to her stubbornness with regard to the fast changing demands in Fashion.

No doubt, the fashion industry is booming in Egypt and at a swift speedy rate. If we can

export with USD 2 Billion to the tycoons of trendy garments in Europe and the US, then we definitely got the skills and know how to master the manufacturing business.

A quick preview from the past to the present, history documents a distinguished clothes and textile manufacturing industry that started back in 2500BC and expanding greatly till our very day. So at least here, we could brag on heritage. On the other hand, exporting is increasing through state of the art factories, more proficient management and additional skilled workers. Social view on the important pleasure of image, taste alteration and following fashion trends improved by the continuous launching of international high street brands such as Zara & H&M. The magnitude of young emerging designers was one of the positive outcomes of the Egyptian revolution in 2011. Obviously, creativity, nerves and spirit clearly pop out during hard times and gladly allowed positive profitable consequence of a wide alternative variety of local designers. Alternatively, for the business to grow and serve the crowd, enhance designer trading, re-introduce fashion as a whole to Egypt and develop the field simultaneously, business executives penetrated with depth to add cherry on top of the new cake in town.

And thus, this leads us to believe we’re growing. The talents were always there but buried, the brains were functioning but one-way directed, the society was unaware and uninformed but was still open to knowledge and a new generation was ready steady and exploding to go!!! The social media created an internet generation that acknowledges and acts NOW!! And this is why we’re growing rapidly.

We’re travelling the world through the internet, we discover latest fashion information through social media, we purchase the latest trends through e-commerce, we communicate global fashion debates through webinars, we blog to identify our personal taste and we learn the business from past guru’s Wikipedia. What is left, is us. Us is how we will not only grow but will let the whole industry boom. This is not when artistic technicalities differ, nor handcraft area of expertise vary, nor fine art talent diverge.

This is when business skills knock the door. Passion might make one a great designer, but only commitment makes one an international designer. We need to develop our time management, enhance our communication skills, emphasize our willingness to constant education to leap a step-ahead and very much try our best to think global. This is commitment……

Dunia Anabtawi is the creative mind behind the exceptional By D Designs; a unique line that isn’t like any other you’ve seen before; and this is probably due to Anabtawi’s distinguishing and

vivid imagination that has been the main driving force behind her creations. Anabtawi’s spot on fashion instinct, backed with her business background, has enabled her to build a solid career in fashion styling and buying. She travels to Milan on monthly basis to hunt down the right pieces for her clients; a city which remains to be her main source of inspiration. She finds her utmost pleasure in making women happy through shopping. For Anabtawi, it’s not just work or business, it’s way more personal than that. It’s a pure source of joy. Needless to say, Anabtawi managed to get her work as a personal shopper recognized by Egyptian Elites.

BY D DESIgNS BY DuNIA ANABTAWI

Page 31: November's issue 2015

November 2015 | 29

The talented stylist/buyer then decided to take her passion for fashion a step further and started taking sessions to explore the artistic side and the technicality behind fashion design. In addition to taking art courses in York University, Toronto, Anabtawi attended a design course in Milan offered by Provocation Milan Designs given by Alessia Mofredini (Head Designer), and she’s currently enrolled in a design course in la Scuola Di Moda-Milan. Soon after, she launched her label By D designs, and celebrated her first Winter collection last year, with the concept of creating the ultimate feminine outfit for every woman. Anabtawi has a thing for mixing rigid with soft materials, which was reflected through her choice of fabrics that mainly consisted of leather and lace with a special addition of fur as an accessory; a thing that further emphasized the elegance and richness of the collection.

And just last month, Anabtawi launched her newest shawl collection, with the concept of adding a touch of style to every woman’s outfit and helping women embrace their uniqueness. Lace, snake skin, fur are the used fabrics for this collection. There is also the ‘Hug Shawl’ which could be worn in three different ways; a piece that could completely alter your attire. This is just the start for Anabtawi, and there much more to anticipate from the talented fashion stylist/buyer/designer.

ZOOMINg IN ON THE MAN BEHIND

THE LENS daniel Salib

There is this saying that goes like, “It’s the photographer, not the camera, that’s the true instrument,” and we couldn’t find a better prove for it than Daniel Salib; a self-taught photographer whose passion for

the magical lens of the camera has driven him to be one of the top photographers in Egypt! There is no doubt that photography is turning into some sort of a trend in the country, but only those who got their heart in it are able to stand out in such a competitive market, and Daniel is among the few who are able to leave a mark through their unique vision.

The stereotype here is that you see young boys running around doing tricks with a basketball or a football, but as a kid, Daniel managed to create his own set of maneuvers

with his camera. Armed with a vivid imagination, he was able to develop his own distinctive accent at a very early age; or what he calls an “angle,” which basically what differentiates one photographer from the other. Another thing that sets Daniel apart is how bold he is, a thing that not only translates through his shoots, but also through his journey. Daniel comes from a family that are really fond of photography, but only him managed to take it professionally to the next level. After studying marketing at college, and after earning a successful career, he made the hard decision of ditch the “dream job,” along with the stable pay at a time when others would beg for it given the current economic condition. With the help and the encouragment of his beautiful wife, who stood by him every step of the way, Daniel followed his ambition and passion; he stood his ground in the face of all the uncertainties and paved his own road to success.

Page 37: November's issue 2015

CONTACTS:www.danielsalib.comInstagram: @danielsalib_photographyFacebook: Daniel Salib Photography

daniel Salib

Despite the limited resources of the industry, not to mention the conservative nature of us Egyptians, the talented photographer was able to find a balance between his own creative input versus the market’s restrictions. Daniel seeks every opportunity he gets to break some of the boundaries that might be standing between him and his dream of reaching his full creative potential; and that’s why he refuses to restrict himself to a certain line of work. You’ll find him cheering on with newly-weds, developing that special bond while capturing their special moments; you’ll also find his work featured in major publications, in addition to his numerous collaborations in the fashion industry. With every project he adds a special flavor through his distinct sense of production and visualization.

When we asked him about his favorite shoot or project, Daniel said he got no favorites! Which comes as a surprise given the quality of his work. He believes that he still has too much to offer through his photography. Seeing his work published and recognized brings joy to his heart of course, yet he usually focuses on what’s missing and make sure he fills in the gaps as he moves forward. Daniel is persistently adding new elements to his work, a thing that he accomplishes through continuously educating himself and staying up-to-date with the latest technology in such a speedy developing industry. We just can’t wait to see what the exceptionally talented photographer has to offer us next...

• oVerDoing your Washing/exfoliating routine

Washing is essential, but overdoing it can really harm your skin. Over washing and over-exfoliating are very common mistakes that women do. We know that nobody likes having an oily/shinny spots, but natural skin oil is there for a reason. Skin oil is essential for protecting and keeping your skin healthy on the long run. Over-washing and rubbing your skin will result in two outcomes; you either end up having a more oily appeal because the skin is compensating for the oil you rubbed, or you would end up with red irritated skin and will start using moisturizers regularly. • Ditching sunscreen

When it's not sunnyRecently many dermatologists have been emphasizing on the

importance of wearing your sunscreen, even if it's on daily bases. Applying the right SPF on your skin is the easiest and most effective defense against skin premature aging. And remember, just because the sun is covered with clouds, doesn't mean its UV rays won't reach you.

• picking on your zitsPicking zits, popping pimples, we've all tried it once or twice. And while we can't stand seeing that pimple in the mirror or having it as our companion during our night-out, still you'll have to pass on the picking technique, because you could easily irritate the area around it, or worse turn it into a scar. So try to wait till you get to your dermatologist, and don't believe what you see on the up-close mirror; it magnifies everything. It’s probably not that noticable.

• choosing the "Junk" Way out

Nutrition has always been associated with skin health. It's simple, the healthier you eat, the healthier your skin will look and the longer the time it will look that way. Processed sugar is one of the main reasons for poor skin appeal, especially amongst kids and teenagers, in addition to food with high levels of saturated fat and carbs, like chips and most of fast food recipes that are direct results of premature aging.

• exercising With your Makeup on

Putting makeup on, even light formulas, could cause skin inflammation and irritation. Due to sweating, skin pores open up, and whatever you're putting will block these pores and irritate your skin. You wouldn't like to have the perfect shape with a less-than-perfect skin, would you?

Hair Contouring is the newest trend that everybody is talking about in the beauty and fashion industry.

And as you all know, with every new trend comes all sorts of bla bla and misconceptions, but it’s your face and hair that we’re talking about here, so we’re assuming you don’t want to take any risk, right? We decided to provide you with the basic information you need to know about the contouring phenomenon. And thanks to our friends at L’Oreal Egypt, who have Contouring as part of their latest ‘IT Looks’ campaign for AW’15, we were able to have a very valuable input from the Brand’s Ambassador, International Hair Stylist, and Contouring Expert, Mr. Berni Ottjes. Ottjes helped us fill in the missing pieces about contouring, and now thanks to him, some of our local colorists are ready to pamper your hair with the latest trend!

THE ABCs OF

Hair Contouring

beautyHair

The concept of contouring is not new to the world of beauty and has been always used in make-up to enhance facial features. The same concept has recently been applied to the hair, which mainly focuses on the shape of the face, and the use of highlights and free-hand application of different tones of colors, which are accurately placed in a way that accentuate your features. Hair contouring works with every face shape and it differs according to the bone structure. For example, if you have a round shaped face, lighter colors will be applied at the top and at the ends of the hair, while deeper shades will be applied on the sides; the whole point here is to give your face a longer appeal. Also, According to Ottjes, the eyes, the chin and the cheeks are the three most important places/ determinants to look at when applying colors. Moreover, when asked about hair-dos, and how they could limit the application of contouring, Ottjes explained that to reach a total complete look, it's usually a combination of the right coloring technique with the right hair styling and the right hair cut for your

face. Generally speaking, it's not necessary to change your hair-do for contouring to work; however, it works best with "a bob, a lob and long hair.""It's very important that the hair-dressers look at the shape of the face, and put the technique only on the places of the face where a certain woman needs the accent of coloring a highlight or coloring a lowlight," Ottjes said, emphasizing the importance of understanding the face structure before getting into contouring. In other words, applying the right contouring technique mainly lies in the hands of your hair-dresser. Choosing a trust-worthy colorist is a must; do some research, ask friends for references, especially in case of contouring as it's still fairly new in Egypt. So understanding what contouring is and how it works will at least help you open a discussion with your hair-dresser before changing your look. With that said, apparently hair contouring is here to stay, and many hair experts, including Ottjes even expecting it to turn into one of the classical techniques.

1- tell us More aBout your BackgrounD anD What you Were Doing Before getting into Makeup. I studied political science, which I really enjoyed but didn’t feel the same interest pursuing a career in. I got into teaching adults by a mere coincidence and it was a very rich experience.

A Chat With The Brilliant Make up Artist

Eman Arafa2- has Makeup alWays Been a passion of yours? hoW DiD you BecoMe a Makeup artist?Ever since I was young make up was a hobby I could spend all my time at. I would try new tricks on my friends and cousins whenever there’s an occasion until I decided to study make up and went for a diploma in Dubai. That’s when I realized I’m so passionate about it and started going professional. Joining MAC team helped me learn so much so fast. Then I continued my studies in Italy where I worked on more advanced techniques.

3- hoW Do you finD the Balance BetWeen knoWing What’s Best for clients anD still satisfying their neeDs? It’s really important to listen well to your clients trying to understand their preferences and style. There’s always a way of adapting the look to meet their expectations and needs. Make up is so personal so every detail the client mentions matters. I would always explain to them what works best for their features and why.

4- Do you haVe a certain style inspiration or approach When Doing Makeup for a client? The approach differs depending on the occasion, season and client’s personality. What I prefer doing is starting very light and then checking with the client how intense she wants to go. That way we reach her targets easily and keep things her way with a little bit of a spice.

5- in your opinion, What Differentiates one Makeup artist froM the other? When it comes to fashion designers for instance they

Page 49: November's issue 2015

develop an accent with time, people can differentiate one designer’s work from the other. Is the same thing applicable for makeup artists?I believe it’s more or less the same with all kinds of art. Every artist develops his or her own signature that if you notice you would be able to differentiate their work even with the change of trends. That’s really obvious when you put your heart into what you do so there’s a touch of you in every look you create.

6- can you list your faVorite proDucts of all tiMe? Well the list is so big! But I can say I can never give up on my airbrush gun. It has made my work even more fun. My favorite eyeliner is the MAC fluid-line. As for concealers, I really like mixing a couple of them, Bobbi Brown, Make up forever HD and the pro long wear concealer from MAC are the ones I use most. I am so into the different ranges of foundation MAC offers as they meet all needs from high to low coverage as well as the brilliant shades they make especially for medium toned middle easterners.

7- What the Main Beauty proDucts that you alWays carry in your Bag?I always tell my clients and students, the best beauty trick is to always carry around a bottle of water. Dehydration is the real enemy ladies. I also like to keep a lip pencil and some bronzer with me for a quick touch up. Lip pencils can take the heat better

than lipsticks so u don’t risk your favorite lipstick going off.

8- What’s your faVorite trenDs for Winter 2015?What I love most about this Winter looks is that bronzers from summer stay this year. Also, the trend of going softer with the contour means it’s a very natural looking season.

9- finally, if there is one golDen tip you WoulD giVe to WoMen When it coMes to Makeup, What WoulD it Be? Skin care ladies is the key to a bright face. Prepping your face with the right moisturizer and primer is your guarantee to a successful make up look. Also be adventurous and break out of your comfort zone every now and then and try new colors and tricks, make it fun..

Nashwa El-Bendary has joined the Faculty of Computers and Information, Cairo University and received her B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Information Technology from the same faculty, in the years 2000, 2004 and 2008, respectively. Currently, Bendary works as an associate professor and the head of Business Information Systems (BIS) department at the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport (AASTMT). She is also the vice-chair of the Scientific Research group in Egypt (SRGE). Her latest scientific research on employing computer science and computational intelligence for developing Information and Communication technologies (ICT) based applications, and providing intelligent and novel technological solutions for environmental problems, has been getting international acclaim, and she got selected and rewarded as one of the top five winners at L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Levant & Egypt fellowship program.

haVe you alWays Been fonD of science? In fact, I’ve always been deeply interested in computer systems, credit goes to my family. At my early age, primitive games were the first experiences I had with computers. I can always remember the feeling of wanting to know just how computers worked. As I grew older, my interest in gaming and how exactly it worked deepened, which improved my ability of

creative thinking and enhanced my interest in utilizing computer systems for problem solving. My interest in computing as well as the ICT in general has developed throughout the years, the case that has motivated me into studying ICT on a more advanced and scientific level.

it’s not that coMMon for WoMen in our culture to enter the scientific research fielD? What’s, in your opinion, the Main reason BehinD that?In my opinion, the main reason behind underrepresenting women in scientific research and especially in the computer science field is that women have historically chosen typical lower-paying yet fulfilling jobs like teaching or nursing, whereas their male counterparts, sometimes considered family providers, choose high-paying careers like computer science and engineering. Also, key contributing factors include a culture that encourages young women to pursue traditionally female careers, as well as the very well-known stereotype that a scientific researcher is a male. Sometimes this leads women to feel like they don’t belong in a technical world dominated by men. Those stereotypes are based on reality, according to data released by some of the largest tech companies. Among the top employers in Silicon Valley, including Facebook, Google, Twitter and Apple, 70% of the workforce is male.

Who supporteD your passion the Most?In addition to my family, my professors have supported that passion, especially professor Aboul Ella Hassanien, the chair of the scientific research group in Egypt (SRGE), via continuous supporting and motivation. Also, as scientific career enables contributing to my field of specialization via building research groups, populated with young researchers and students, I have the opportunity to aspire, help, and motivate Egyptian young researchers, especially young females, to collaborate in investigating the surrounding environment in order to figure out the most sounding challenges on different socio-economic dimensions, and accordingly to improve their chances of success and generate high-quality researches.

What DiD your struggle With the Most in the egyptian science fielD?Science field in Egypt is in need for a critical pause, especially that the financial support is very low and is expedited at a slow rate. Also, to develop high-quality scientific research in Egypt, radical transformation and comprehensive development of the educational

in the phase of testing and validation. Also, more image sets of various fruits and vegetables types are planned to be collected and added in order to broaden the domain of crops that can be monitored during the ripeness stages.

hoW WoulD you DescriBe your experience With l’oreal-unesco for WoMen in science prograM?It’s been great pleasure for me to be selected, representing Egypt, among the fellows of the L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Levant & Egypt program. The fellowship program highlights the crucial role women play in science and technology. This prestigious reward appreciates the impact of my hard work in research, which gives me extra motivation to pursue my current research in order to propose more creative smart ICT solutions. More importantly, this reward represents a great recognition to a woman’s contribution to the field of multi-deciplinary ICT applications in the agricultural domain that is tightly related both to the food security and sustainable economic development issues. Furthermore, it recognizes me to be a role model in the field of computer science to many young women via receiving increased visibility and leading the path for the new generation to follow my example.

What is next for you? is there a neW research/proJect you’re Working on?Currently, I am working on completing my work on the intelligent agricultural system.Image sets of various fruits and vegetables types will be collected and added in order to broaden the domain of crops that can be monitored during the ripeness stages. The next stage for the crops monitoring system will be developing the disease detection and recognition module for leaves and fruits for triggering early warnings that help the farmer to decrease the loss in the product. On the other hand, we will start soon another research project that’s focusing on using the computer vision and computational intelligence for monitoring water quality based on aquatics as bio-indicators for water pollution.

What WoulD you say to other egyptian WoMen Who are intiMiDateD to folloW their passion; especially in the scientific fielD? I would finally say to Egyptian women, especially bright young researchers, to stay determined to overcome the obstacles as well as the overt biases that militate against their decision to pursue their scientific career, “You Matter .. Follow Your Passion to make Difference in This World”.

process is needed. That would help in the emergence of creative research calibers capable of innovation. Moreover, there is a real lack of appreciation for good research work, for young researchers in general and especially for females. Furthermore, science field lack the cooperation among research centers and industrial partners within a framework of clear regulations and instructions.

can you tell us More aBout your research scope? My scientific research mainly considers employing computer science and computational intelligence for developing ICT based applications and providing intelligent and novel technological solutions for environmental problems, especially in Egypt; such as monitoring climate change impacts on agricultural crops and automating crops ripeness monitoring and disease early detection, the case that affects different dimensions of economic sustainable development in Egypt. Also, my scientific research considers using intelligent technologies for monitoring water quality along with tackling the problems of aquatic life and its relation to water pollution in order to propose more creative and user-friendly solutions that enhance and facilitate people’s quality of life specially for developing countries, where agriculture and water quality represent an important engine of economic growth.

We knoW that you inVenteD a neW systeM for regulating anD Monitoring of crops; can you elaBorate please? This project is made of a number of scientific researches and publications that studied and proposed a smart agricultural monitoring and harvest planning system. The system is represented in an automatic tool that aids famers to make suitable decisions in determining the best time for harvesting their crops and help at increasing yields, and accordingly, decrease the loss in products. The ripeness stages recognition part of the system is based on automated approach for fruits and vegetables ripeness measurement and evaluation via investigating and classifying the different maturity/ripeness stages. The affordability, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability of the proposed system have been studied and approved, against the need for human expert, not only for big farmers but also for small/medium farmers (SMF). Moreover, the proposed system provides extension services via enabling viewing images and local environmental data in addition to analyzing them over time in a non-destructive way and without any additional effort, thus organizations can support their farmers and customers by giving access to a platform where data for different plots are available, thus allowing better forecast of crop status. The system is still

For all the ladies out

there.. travel like you mean it!

by: Fady HaNNa

Page 57: November's issue 2015

November 2015 | 55

I got to know many of the ladies here in our Egyptian society who would say "No, I can't do it alone .. the idea scares me." Fear is a barrier, but only those who manage to overcome it will be able to feel the thrill; so at the end of the day it's your call. But think about it; don't you just miss the simple act of walking? Have you ever watched a foreign movie, and went like "God, I could really use a walk by the river." Well, guess what? There are many countries that are safe enough to walk without experiencing any harassment! Until our society hopefully reaches that state one day, women shouldn't prevent themselves of traveling just because of fear.

To travel around the world is equivalent to earning a degree, and it's the mother of all experiences that reinforce the sense of independence for both, men and women. Moreover, travelling makes you accept people for what they are and helps you accept their differences; you learn accepting and appreciating other cultures. Once you decide to take that trip on your own, the adrenaline will kick in. The feeling of being

responsible and being able to plan the whole thing with its tiny details will boost your confidence and independence like no other. Not to mention, the pure joy of traveling and exploring the unknown that would slowly start to overcome all your thoughts.

Life is all about pursuing your passion. It's tasteless and boring to live someone else's life without enjoying the little things, which often turn out to be the biggest things. Chase your dreams; go to Brazil and dance the samba; go to Europe and hop-on and off between cities like Paris and Amsterdam. Meditate in India, or dance to the loud beats of African music with the beautiful kids in Kenya. Bungee jump in New Zealand, and try swimming with the sharks in Cape town. Relax in the Caribbean, or go hiking in the Machu Picchu trail; spot the Gorillas in Uganda or the Penguins in Antarctica. Life has much more to see and earth is much bigger than the district of your neighborhood or work. For all the ladies out there, it's time to start packing; it's time to wander and get lost around the globe...

Who said that the fact that you’re a woman shall prevent you from travelling? Who said that you have

to be accompanied with your family or husband just to have the opportunity of visiting the destination you’ve always been dreaming of ? Who said that you’ll only be permitted to travel in case of business trips, and only when parents or husband will finally “allow” you to travel! It’s time to be independent regardless of your marital or relationship status. If travel is your passion, do it and don’t wait another day before claiming your right. Please take that trip with your college friends before it’s too late, and before you hear excuses like “we now have kids” or “we don’t have time and money.” Just purchase the tickets and go...

my nose is swollen; it hurts a lot and have clear scabs on the right side that just appeared like two days ago. What should i do?

4

doctor’s answer:At the elbow the lunar nerve is relatively shallow and exposed to trauma of various kinds. People call this the crazy bone, but injury to the lunar nerve is what happens. Also the small digital artery that supplies it if damaged can cause numbness, but then often the finger tip is blue/ white. If it persists over a week see your doctor.

doctor’s answer:Nerve compression; some kind of pressure on superficial nerves could cause that. Could be at wrist like carpal tunnel; but that does not affect legs. You need to see a doctor if it occurs daily.

doctor’s answer:It could be a skin fungus which can spread and look like whiter spots than your normal skin. One remedy may be showering with selsum blue shampoo and let it sit on your skin for a couple of minutes. Another possibility is vitiligo ( aka the Michael Jackson skin disease). This is a skin disorder where you start to lose the pigment cells called melanocytes.

doctor’s answer:Possibly impetigo. Start with topical antibiotic ointment on nose and if not better in few days see dermatologist for diagnosis and treatment.

i have venous pulse in my eyes. is it serious and what is the cure?

What is your morning routine when getting dressed?

Ophthalmology

Dr. Felix Brizuela Neurology

doctor’s answer:It could be migraine/muscle tens. Frequent, short lived non progressive head pain is usually a migraine phenomenon, but such headaches can also occur due to neck problems or muscle spasms in the muscles of the scalp on the corresponding side. Brain tumors (masses) are unlikely if not constant, but should always be ruled out when the pain is on the same side constantly. If haven’t had MRI or CT, you should.

Cardiology

doctor’s answer:Spontaneous venous pulsation can be seen on the optic nerve head. When present, it means that there is no elevated intracranial pressure. Its absence has no meaning. It is normal to have a spontaneous venous pulse.

Expert’s answer:I survey the floor and find an item and build an outfit around it. Something will catch my eye—a floral shirt or a pair of boots—and I’ll be like, ‘Okay, how do I make that into a look?’ I try to keep things pretty minimal.

doctor’s answer:Possibly Asthma. It causes shortness of breath, cough, and wheezing during exhalation, which the doctor may hear on examination even if you don’t hear it.

1- think • As hard as it may seems, you should try and think

logically at the start of panic attack. What makes it hard is that panic/anxiety attacks are usually a production of our mind and thoughts.

• Too many thoughts are rushing into your head, but you need to focus and emphasize on one though in particular, which is: “I’m not in danger, am just afraid, and it will be over soon.”

2- accept• Past experiences and testimonies have showed that

the “calm down” technique doesn’t really work with such attacks, but could actually make it worse.

• Don’t try to calm yourself; you should rather acknowledge the fact that you’re having an attack, accept it, and know that it will takes its time and pass.

3- Breathe• Breathing right can make all the difference during

the attack and can relief or even prevent many of its accompanied symptoms.

• You have to think in order to breathe correctly; remind yourself that just because you’re having a shortness of breath, doesn’t mean you’re not getting enough oxygen or that you’re dying! God Forbids

• Shortening of breath is just another symptom, and it’s due to irregular breathing pattern during the attack. The solution? Regulate your breathing technique.

4- iMagine• Go to your safe place. For instance, if you’re away

Who would’ve thought that after years into our adulthood, we’ll be back to coloring books? Is it our desperate attempt to revive our early years; when everything was way simpler? Or is it just another way for us to escape reality? There are contradicting views regarding the subject; while some see it as a tool to relieve stress, others deny that there is physiological evidence to support this claim, and argue that there are many other methods that are way more effective. Nevertheless, whatever your view is, nobody can deny that it’s a growing trend, and people are actually paying money to get coloring books full of complex mandalas or what they might prefer calling “grownups” designs and drawings. And it’s not limited to a certain region or country; the trend is becoming universal.

Generally speaking, and in ideal circumstances, the best way to deal with stress is to eliminate its source, but we all know that this isn’t exactly achievable; you can’t just quit your job or fire your boss for instance. Therefore, the next best thing we do is trying to keep our mind off what’s bothering us; find distraction with anyone or in doing anything. Some stay home and watch a movie, others go out and party hard, and just recently many have decided to resort to coloring.

According to testimonies, users of coloring books claim that their stress levels go down after they color, and that they generally feel calmer and cope better with their anxiety; some even prefer to do it in groups to add to the fun. But the question here is whether coloring just another method of distraction or is there more to it?

According to research, mandalas coloring was first used in the beginning of the 20th century as a way of relaxation by Physiatrist and Physiotherapist Carl Gastuv Jung, which indicates that there is a history behind such trend. However, adult-coloring as we know it today was revived between the years 2011-2013, during which many publishers around the world released coloring books for adults selling million of copies around the world. Among those publishers is the French Publisher Hachette Pratique who released “Art-thérapie: 100 coloriages anti-stress,” as well as the Scottish artist Johanna Basford, who convinced her publisher with the idea of making a coloring book for adults. So there is a history behind adult coloring, major publishers around the world are releasing books, famous illustrators are hopping on the trend, a lot of money is generated, and finally, and most importantly, users are actually de-stressing and claiming that it enhances their lives. So is it now safe to say that adult coloring books proved to be therapeutically effective? Well, NO! Because many therapists and physiatrists currently refuse to accept adult coloring as a form of therapy.

One of the main misconceptions surrounding this phenomenon is listing it under the title ‘Art Therapy,’ or any other therapeutic method for all that matters. The main distinguisher here is that ‘Art Therapy’ includes investing time and effort in the creative process of art making; while coloring mandalas doesn’t exactly classify as an art creation; it’s merely a relaxation tool. Coloring requires minimum thinking, and at the same time, one gets so invested in it that they temporarily lose track of what’s bothering them.

Moreover, some people just like the excitement of exploring their artistic side; it’s like discovering a new part they didn’t even know it existed; and that’s why you’ll find many sharing their colored drawings on social media; they find a little pride in it. Also, the business side of the trend doesn’t settle well with many. Critics believe that publishing houses are taking advantage of people’s anxiety and the stressful conditions of our modern societies, selling an illusion of an anti-stressor/treatment, or what we can call a “placebo.” Through putting the word ‘Therapy’ on their books, and adding some quotes here and there, they convince the buyers that they found the ultimate treatment! Several physiatrists argue that there are

many other more creative activities that people can do to unwind, and that would help them deal and cope with their stress better on the long run.

That being said, if you’re a grown up and find comfort in coloring, by all means do it! Therapy or not, is not really the issue here. The real issue is the increasing levels of stress and pressure we face in our daily lives; there is definitely no counter argument regarding that fact. So adult coloring is not a therapy! Big deal! If the simple act of coloring still makes you happy then you’re one of the lucky few in this world. And remember, no harm, no foul...

checklist When choosing your trainer

the talk: You personal trainer will see you at your weakest and is supposed to pull you up when your down and keep your moving, so you have to make sure that you’re meeting on a common ground, and that you accept them as a person; harmony and chemistry is a must when choosing your personal trainer. You have to talk for a bit before starting training in order to make sure he/she relates to where you at and what you need.

accreditation and references: It’s your absolute right to ask for your potential trainer’s qualifications and even see it to make sure he is qualified enough to train you. Also, asking for references from previous clients would reinforce your decision, so ask around.

know the plan: Getting into shape is a long process, so you got to at least know the plan for the first phase or milestones, so that you’ll be ready physically and most importantly mentally. Also, knowing the schedule would help you manage your time ahead of the sessions.

Bulletins/Fitnessfitness evaluation: If your personal-trainer-to-be don’t ask for a fitness evaluation, or worse, asked for it but haven’t checked the results, then he is not your guy! Ask questions and be curious to know that he understands exactly the nature of your body and your overall condition.

in case of emergencies: Make sure your trainer is trained! Emergencies and injuries are not really uncommon during training sessions. If God forbids something happens to you, you have to be definitive that you’re in good hands. Ask about their experiences with such incidents and make sure they’re handy with the first aid kit.

Diet plan: Just because someone is in shape doesn’t make them nutrition experts; the same applies to fitness trainers. So ask for your diet plan before starting; if he/she refers you to a qualified nutritionist then you got nothing to worry about; but if he/she constructed a diet plan for you, don’t ever follow it blindly; especially if he/she cuts off meals, excludes major ingredients, or adds supplements.

ArE YOu A VICTIM OF IBS?

Many people suffer from IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), while not even recognizing the symptoms. It is the most common disorder diagnosed by gastroenterologist (doctors who specialize in digestive disorders).

Let’sfirstdefineIBS:According to Mayo Clinic, Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is “a common disorder that affects the large intestine (colon); commonly causes cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation.” I’m sure many of you who are reading this article right now will be surprised when realizing that most of these symptoms is a daily thing that some people suffer from; yet thinking that it’s normal to feel that way. Now let me tell you that the symptoms do vary from one individual to another, but if you have had a couple of these symptoms on regular basis for at least three to six months then you probably are diagnosed with IBS.

What causes iBs?There is no simple or clear answer to this question. The main cause of Irritable Bowel Syndrome is unknown, but healthcare professionals believe that one of the causes is due a miscommunication between the brain and the intestinal tract.

other causes of iBs are BelieVeD to Be BaseD on factors like: • Unhealthy diets and poor eating habits. • Stress, anxiety, and depression.• Hormonal changes.• Some medicines, such as antibiotics.• An infection in the digestive tract, such as

salmonella.• Genetics.

I’m a firm believer that diet and lifestyle play an important role in shaping human health. The way we were accustomed to eat and drink pretty much map out how our health will look like when we get older. Having said that, diet, eating habits, and lifestyle definitely play a huge role in decreasing or increasing IBS symptoms.

DietThe best nutritional advice I give is, to be on a high fiber diet (excluding foods that make you bloated and causes flatulence such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, and some legumes) along with drinking at least 1.5 liters of fluids; mostly water because fluids that contain sugars will make you gassy and cause abdominal discomfort. People who have a prolonged history of constipation will benefit the most from this diet. Some IBS cases may not benefit from a high fiber diet and in other cases symptoms may worsen. So, the next step should be taken is going on an Elimination Diet.

eliMination Diet: This diet basically focuses on cutting out certain foods for 12 weeks to see if the IBS symptoms improve. The international Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders recommends eliminating these four common offenders: coffee, chocolate, insoluble fiber, and nuts. You should also make a list of foods that you think may worsen your IBS. Eliminate one food at a time for 12 weeks and see if you notice any improvement. If not, return the food back to your diet and move on to the next one

sculpteD Bell peppers:When it comes to adding color, bell peppers, especially the red and yellow ones, are really good. Try not to chop them; instead, cut through the entire length of the bell pepper and use the sculpted piece for garnishing.

Dry herBs:Rosemary, dry mint, dry dill and so on, can be added/sprinkled. This adds color and flavor to the plate as well.

VegetaBle sticks: Carrots, asparagus, broccoli and cauliflower, etc.

As you can see, garnish ideas can be done basically with any ingredients; Dry herbs, fresh herbs, spices, sauces and so on. Just give it a try and once you start, you will never leave any of your plates un-garnished.

A Love Bug’s Crushing Love Reading through the Disillusion of “Love” and a “Loving Crush”

“T o be or not to be. . .that is the question.” Of course, Shakespeare has never been that simple. And when it comes to love. . .then, well you get the gist of it! One of the puzzles of this emotion is the beauty of being able to decipher between the reality and fantasy of Lover’s Lane. So, there are 2 types. There are those who are part of that ordeal where you recognize the “love of your life.” The birds are chirping, and all of those butterflies in your stomach make you wish that you could take flight. You see the house, the picket fence, the children, honey coming home from work, and. . .hold up, let’s back up for a second. Things have started to get just a little too forward. Let’s regress a few years, shall we?

Love Bug

Crush of Love

November 2015 | 75

You have met this wonderful guy! Everything is simply perfect about him. From his teeth, the beauty in his smile, how he walks, how he talks, his ambitions, his passions, and so much more. Miniscule irritations that drive you crazy in others, are actually rather cute on him. And you have now regained hope in the species of man! Seems that you have just acquired a case of the love bug. Or the crush of love! Is there a difference? You bet there is! So you have heard of the love bug. But there is another great force known as the crush of love! Yes, that

new wave of energy that is hitting many women around the world. A new “hottie” or boo has entered, and we ask ourselves that question of being “the one.” Caught up in the television fantasies and commercials, our crush of love and love bug can turn into an intermarriage of delusions. So immersed into something that completes us; feeling that we are sleeping in a romantic interchange with the galaxy. It’s one thing to feel that you are part of those initial stages in starting a romantic relationship. It is another to feel that you have fallen so far

into your romantic crush, that you rush into planning your whole life around and about Him! So, here’s the thing ladies, it is clear that some needed medical work is necessary in preventing us from falling further into our delusion. Our heart connects us with love, but our brain connects us with common sense, and our ability to decipher between lover boy, and the love of my life.Ok. . .let’s, put our thinking caps back on, and asses the difference between “lover boy” and the “love of my life.” And presented is our magical list, reflecting the difference between the love bug and the crush of love.

Take a breather. As you gaze longingly at your list, has it occurred that you are more of one than the other? Perhaps those warm fuzzies are not so warm now that you realize your lover boy is more of a crush; an infatuation! And that’s alright. Better to know now. What’s wrong with having a little fun, anyhow? It’s alright to explore! Having those crush stories makes girls night out with wine and dinner all the more exciting. Just remember to keep your crush of love in your pressure cooker of dating. And allow your love bug to blossom slowly in your flower! Take care. . .and until, next time!

loVe Bug:• You walk around calmly contemplating this

new person.• You acknowledge your feelings for that

person. At the same time, you want to explore their personhood more.

• You have embraced your feelings of love. Simultaneously, you’re also interested in being in tuned, and connected with their spirit. You want to learn more about who they are as a person.

• You have spent a lot of time with that person; serious time in fact! Time spent knowing each other , learning about the other person, which ignited those passionate feelings of love for them.

• You have maintained your own persona, and this person hasn’t forced you to change.

• He has also given you the same feelings as you given him.

crush of loVe:• You find yourself walking around like a

disillusioned idiot.• You have never taken a critical examination

of your feelings for this person. • You could care less, or have not even

thought about connecting to their spirit. Their philosophies of life; well, you have not thought about that yet. That physical presence is what drives you crazy.

• You may have spent a lot of time with this person. However, it has not been spent truly learning about each other. The two of you have had fun together, but the quantity has been far greater than the quality!

• You have gotten so wrapped up in your new boo, but have you noticed that HE has not gotten the so glitter-eyed? More energy for him, and less for YOU!

mother & Child

here is how you Choose the right Kindergarten for your Kid

The idea of sending your baby away for school is hard enough as it is, and some parents even try to postpone this step as much as they can or just play it safe and home-school their kids through their early years. Aside from the whole attachment

“dilemma,” parents are left with many options to choose from, and options naturally generate many what ifs and the pressure starts piling up. Should we choose the kindergarten near our house? Should we go for the other one where our friends’ children go? Isn’t that a little bit too much of money for kindergarten? And the list of questions can go on, but to limit the frustration, you just have to put your thoughts in order. Here are some guidelines to help you out through it all:

locationLocation is one of the most important element to think about when choosing a kindergarten. You have to think about transportation and time; will you be able to ride your kid there every morning on time? Do you even own a car? Will your work schedule allow you to pick them up on time? If you’re a working mom, then you might consider choosing a kindergarten that is close to your work place or at least on the same route. Some kindergarten offers bus transportation, but it might be too much for your kid.

BuilDing anD facilitiesBuilding and facilities are also an important factor. Don’t spend your visit at the principle office; ask them to have a detailed tour. Get into the classes to see if its roomy enough; take a look at the wall paint to see if there are scratches or cracks, because this could be an indicator for irregular maintenance. You also have to check the bathroom, as it’s a main indicator for the overall hygiene standard.

enrollMent criteriaLearning the place’s enrollment criteria and overall standards will help you understand who exactly will your kids be spending most of the day with. Having a high standard or a rigid enrollment criteria is not the issue here; you just want to make sure that it matches your status and your parenting standard. Remember that kids at this age will probably be copying their peers’ words and behavior.

curriculuM anD actiVities The whole point of enrolling your kid in a kindergarten is to prepare them for school and enhance the readiness of their minds to absorb information early on. Ask about the curriculum being used, and let them explain its design for you. Also, many places here in Egypt put less emphasis on extracurricular activities, despite their importance in building a child’s character, so make sure you choose a kindergarten where your kid could actually develop a character, not just learn letters and numbers. instructors anD nanniesAsk about the instructors’ qualifications, and their assessment process. If possible, schedule an appointment with who might be your kid’s teacher, and get to learn more about their character and teaching approach. Also, people usually ignore the importance of having a qualified nanny at kindergartens. Well, it’s Egypt, so nannies don’t exactly come with a list of credentials; however, your next best option is to ask for their years of experience.

WorD of MouthOf course the administration will tell you what you want to hear, Right? So to avoid any deception, try to ask other parents whose their kids’ are already enrolled; those are the ones who will tell you things for what they really are. If you’re not already familiar with any of the parents, then you could ask for references from the principle, or pay them a visit at the end of the day when they’re picking up their kids.

Finally, note there isn’t a perfect scenario here, and you’ll have to compromise in order to make a choice. Rank the factors listed above in order of importance to you, your partner, and most importantly your kid. Have a little discussion and just remember to breathe...before you know it you’ll be sending your kid to college.

tolerance policy“Kids will be Kids;” that saying is long gone! No matter how unaware or innocent kids are at this age, you still have to check the kindergarten tolerance policy against any inappropriate conduct from the kids and even instructors; like bullying and yelling. Ask them to explain the followed procedures in such cases.

in case of eMergenciesIs there a doctor available on premises or at least nearby? Do they have a fire/earthquake drill? Have you seen fire distinguishers there? Those are examples for the questions you have to think about when choosing a kindergarten for your kid.

here is how you Choose the right Kindergarten for your Kid

All the attendees were there with a sole purpose, which is to give credit to and celebrate the success of five beautiful young bright Arab women, who managed to advance and break the stereotype in the science field, proving that there is no such thing as a “male-only” field.

L’OréAL - uNESCO FOr WOMEN IN SCIENCE

Levant and Egypt Fellowships

A jury of prominent scientists from around the region chose the five exceptional Arab women scientists. Dr. Mouin Hamzé, Secretary General of the National Council for Scientific Research in Lebanon (CNRS-L), led the panel of juries, and was definitely the right man for the job. Dr. Hamzé has been an active member in several regional and international institutions, and has been recognized internationally for his valuable contribution to the field of science, both practically and academically. Dr. Hamzé has always given a special attention to the launching of new programs, including the Ph.D. Scholarship Program, the Grant Research Program, the Associated Research Units Program, in addition to establishing a new Science Technology & Innovation Policy (STIP).

The Jury also included Dr. Nagwa Abdel Meguid from Egypt, who in addition to serving as the perfect representation of a hard-working Egyptian woman, she has been a true role model for the participants and led by example, as she was once among the five selected scientists to win the outstanding L’Oreal UNESCO Award for women in Science for Africa & Middle East back in 2002; and now with her continuing persistence and hard work, she managed to be among the jury panel years later! Professor Meguid holds her Ph.D. from Alexandria University. She is a professor of human genetics at the National Research Center (NRC) in Egypt. She is also the Senior Geneticist at the Genetics Institute, Pasadena, California; a fellow of Uppsala University, Sweden, and was granted several awards for her achievement in the field of genetics. The jury panel also included Dr. Marie Abboud from Lebanon, who holds a PhD degree in Atomic and Quantum Physics, Ecole Normale Supérieure and Université Pierre et Marie Curie, and a HDR degree (Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches) from Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France. Along with Dr. Alia Shatanawi from Jordan, Dr. Maysa Azzeh from Palestine, and Dr. Samir Badrawi from Iraq. Every jury member has used and shared their valuable expertise to assist in the fair selection of the five winners of L’Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Egypt & Levant regional fellowships for this year.

The Egyptian Dr. Nashwa Mamdouh El Bendary is among the five extraordinary women who were rewarded. Dr. Bendary’s research is in the areas of Ambient Intelligence, Ubiquitous Smart Systems, Smart Environmental, Monitoring, Mobile Computing and Technologies, Wireless Sensor Networks, Image Processing, and Machine Learning. Her scientific research publications considered many recent topics such as providing technological solutions for environmental problems. Dr. Intisar Shadeed Jlaib Al-Mejibli from Iraq was also rewarded for her scientific achievement, along with Dr. Ramia Zuhair Al Bakain from Jordan, Dr. Hiba El Hajj from Lebanon, and Dr. Abeer Al-Qatati from Palestine.

What’s really impressive here is how five uniquely smart scientists, from five different Arab countries, with totally different backgrounds and conditions, have been united over one thing, which is their love for the science. All five scientists have worked hard to turn their passion into tangible innovation that would help humanity. The L’Oréal UNESCO For Women In Science Egypt & Levant regional fellowships program is one of the very few, if not the only one that highlights the crucial role that Arab women play in science, through honoring outstanding female researchers and helping putting their exceptional projects under the spotlight. And thanks to such forward thinking, many young Arab women get inspired and motivated to follow their dreams no matter their challenges they might face.

In a world of beeps, texts and tweets, I’ve found that the concept of “romance” has altered greatly. Everything about courtship that we’ve grown up hearing about has dissipated into zeros and ones on computer screens. It started off slowly, with msn messages (long live 90s kids) and dial-up internet and ended with a war of who can hold up not opening a text for fear of the all-powerful “seen” notification. We can write full-fledged speeches on our

phones but God forbid we need to look someone in the eye and tell them how we feel (yikes!). It is especially then that we find our tongues paralyzed. The whole point of self expression is to be able to look someone in the eye and tell them you care about them, right? Technology is not the only problem, here, even common lingo has taken our expression of affection into ruins. When I first heard about the existence of the word ”bae”, I thought the apocalypse was upon us; surely it was a joke, no self-respecting couple would tolerate calling each other bae, but alas, there we are.

The only time I’ve seen candle-lit dinners happen was in one of the many Nickolas Sparks movies, not once in real life. I think one time, I saw a guy carrying a flower bouquet, there was a debate over which planet he was from, and whether or not he came in peace.

I mean, granted, it’s cute to wake up to morning texts, complete with heart emojis and a rose or two, but stopping there and calling it romance is a slap in the face to Shakespeare, Poe and all the greats who spent their time writing long-hand letters and going to bed with ink splotches on their hands instead of finger cramps. Y’all can call me old fashioned, but I think you’ll agree with me when I say that I’d take a nice dinner with glasses made of glass over a Styrofoam cup of coffee from your local Starbucks any day. All I’m saying is that we don’t have to see romance in Paolo Coelo’s canon of works or on faded out quotes on Facebook. It just takes a little extra work and a step away from the computer screen to bring back the magic. I move we bring back romance and down with text messages, so our dear Romeo would stop rolling in his grave.

MoDern roMance: an inVestigation By aziz ansariIn his new book, ‘Modern Romance,’ Aziz Ansari shares some of the challenges of finding romance and falling in love in our modern digital world. The 32-year-old standup comedian is “investigating” the impact of social media on our love lives, and how it’s changing what were considered once as the “golden rules” of relationships; and that our interactions are becoming more shallow and fake as we hide behind our smart phones and laptops. American sociologist Eric Klinenberg Co-wrote the book with Ansari, which gives the material a more balanced content.

Love: You’re used to being in charge, but maybe it’s time you consider taking a back seat in your relationship. You may struggle with mixed signals and find your skeptic nature taking over sometimes, but have faith that all those signals will come clear in the right time.

Career: Remember that project/plans that you’ve been putting aside for a while now? You should dedicate sometime and look into it.
