We are honored to participate in the exciting national tour of Edward Burtynsky: Water, a suite of 60 large-scale, color photographs that create a global portrait of water and the many ways we interact with this precious resource. Later in the season, we will salute the dramatic sculpture of David Greenwood in our Michigan Artist Series, as well as Art of the Lived Experiment.

When you visit, don’t forget GRAM’s permanent collection galleries, which are constantly refreshed with new works on loan as well as gems from our own holdings. GRAM Selects ArtPrize 2014: Encore highlights the works of 11 different ArtPrize 2014 artists by interspersing them within familiar works from GRAM’s permanent collection. Art in Bloom is another must-see. For one weekend only you can marvel at the work of 19 of Michigan's best floral designers presenting innovative floral sculptures inspired by select works in our galleries.

Weekends are a wonderful time to visit the Museum! Start yours early with Meijer Free Thursday Nights, when we’re open until 9:00 pm. On Saturday afternoons, warm up after skating in Rosa Parks Circle with a cup of hot cocoa and art-making activities in GRAMStudio, or just drop in for some hands-on, all-ages fun. Sundays offer the continuation of our Sunday Classical Concert Series, celebrating nationally recognized local talent.

We invite our members to take advantage of our exclusive member-only offerings, including exhibition previews, social and learning opportunities, and special connections to GRAM's art experts. We are planning some wonderful travel opportunities for our members, including a tour of the exhibition of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit at the Detroit Institute of Arts, exploration of the Krasl Art Center in St. Joseph, Michigan, and a once in a lifetime opportunity to travel to Venice, Italy to immerse yourself in art, architecture, and the landscape of Venice and Veneto!

Over the past five years, Burtynsky traveled across the globe, weaving together an ambitious representation of water’s increasingly fragmented life cycle and the roles that it plays in modern life: as a source of healthy ecosystems and energy, as a key element in cultural and religious rituals, and as a rapidly depleting resource. These images—sometimes elegant and sometimes haunting, many bordering on the edge of complete abstraction—hover between the worlds of painting and photography, forming a compelling global portrait of water that functions as an open-ended question about humanity’s past, present, and future relationship with the natural world.

Burtynsky’s images address several facets of the world’s vital resource, exploring the source, collection, control, displacement, and depletion of water. The exhibition is introduced through a body of work taken during the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster, using a newsworthy subject to represent the consequences of improperly calculated risks to the environment.

• DISTRESS: landscapes where water is scarce or forever compromised

• CONTROL: large-scale incursions upon the earth to harness and divert the power of water

• AGRICULTURE: the impact of the largest human activity on the planet

Join us for an on-stage conversation between photographer Edward Burtynsky and Russell Lord, organizing curator of Edward Burtynsky: Water. The two will discuss the creation and intentions of Burtynsky's ambitious

five-year project, Water, a series of large-scale photographs through which he examines and reveals the complex interaction between humankind and our most precious natural resource.

Edward Burtynsky: Water is organized by the New Orleans Museum of Art



GRAM presents recent sculptures by Grand Rapids artist David Greenwood that demonstrate his use of symbols and allegory in reflecting on the human condition. The exhibition includes an array of Greenwood’s inventive, realist works that demonstrate his confident handling of wood, metal, and other materials. He continues to straddle the boundary between the conscious and unconscious mind, “searching for those images that are both unique and universal.” Greenwood was recently honored with the title of Professor Emeritus upon his retirement from Kendall College of Art and Design, where taught Sculpture and Functional Art for over 30 years.

Art in Bloom is an annual, one-weekend-only exhibition that celebrates the combined beauty of art and floral design. Come see the first signs of spring at the Museum while touring the galleries and enjoying extravagant floral sculptures. The region's most talented floral designers will create elegantly designed and thought provoking arrangements inspired by works from the Museum's permanent collection. These floral sculptures emphasize, challenge, and build upon elements and concepts within the original work of art, creating an extraordinary dialogue between the two pieces.

Art in Bloom

Visitors will be invited to select the People's Choice Award Winner by casting a vote for their favorite floral sculpture. This three-day exhibition is a must-see!

During ArtPrize 2014, GRAM's curatorial team explored the entries on view throughout the city and selected works from 11 different artists with strong resonances to other works in the Museum's collection. This year's collection features photography, installations, print, film, drawing, and sculpture. GRAM Selects ArtPrize 2014: Encore showcases these works throughout the Museum in context beside works in GRAM's permanent collection, encouraging guests to explore the connections between them. This curation of select works underscores the significance of Grand Rapids' annual ArtPrize event by presenting selected highlights from ArtPrize on a year-round basis. The chosen works will rotate on and off view with the Museum's permanent collection through ArtPrize 2015.

Our new Chief Curator, Ron Platt, comes to us by way of the Birmingham Museum of Art, where he recently served as Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art. He plunged right into ArtPrize less than two weeks after his arrival in Michigan, and got to know the Museum's team amidst the intense backdrop of crowds, events, and programming that occur during that special three-week period in downtown Grand Rapids.

We are thrilled to have Ron on board, and have put him to work straightaway organizing Re-Envisioning The Nutcracker, and preparing for Edward Burtynsky: Water and T.J. Wilcox: In the Air. He is paying visits to studios in New York City to meet with artists that he is considering including in complementary exhibitions to the Museum's headliners. Ron is also fully engaged in GRAM's Outreach Task Force, which is tasked with engaging a more diverse audience of Museum visitors.

exhibition of contemporary art that addresses change, adjustment, and social perceptions in the lives of disabled people. The exhibition will explore technological advancements, social stigmatization, and the day-to-day experiences of people living with disabilities. Art of the Lived Experiment is the centerpiece of the DisArt Festival, which includes a series of talks, performances, and presentations at various venues around Grand Rapids that aim to inform the public and inspire conversations about the human experience of disability as it relates to the production of art.

Ron brings a wealth of strong leadership and curatorial experience to the Museum. He is thrilled to be joining the GRAM team, and notes that one of his immediate priorities is to immerse himself in the West Michigan community of artists, designers, and civic and cultural institutions in order to keep forging meaningful connections between GRAM and the community.
