Welcome to RHS Garden Rosemoor’s Winter Sculpture Exhibition 2017/18

Now a regular feature, the Winter Sculpture Exhibition has continued to grow and now attracts over thirty thousand visitors. Rosemoor curates the exhibition and employs a variety of methods to source it’s participating sculptors: some are found whilst visiting other gardens and exhibitions locally, others can be recommended by the current artists but often desk research

too can yield wonderful results. However some of the most remarkable sculptors and their works have simply been drawn to the exhibition on their own.

The gardens in winter are the perfect backdrop for the sculptures. As the foliage turns and falls the garden appears quite differently with structural elements being more evident. Sculptures are placed in and around the garden in such a way that the pieces complement and enhance their setting. Essential elements of the pieces, their tone, message or even material construction are extracted and echoed in the immediate environment in which they are placed. We like to site the sculptures in such a way that the observer is confront-ed, and even sometimes challenged, by these material statements.

The quality of winter light in the garden is also an important consideration when looking for the ideal location. The low winter sun or the effects of adverse weather and early darkness can be used to advantage in dramatically highlighting the sculptures. This year a number of the peices feature within our new Winter Glow Illuminations and can show the art in a totally different light.

Most of our sculptures are available to purchase or can be made to commission. These individual creations can be yours to own and used to enhance your own home or garden in dramatic and exciting ways. If you would like to know more about the sculptures and their creators join a free guided walk which leaves from the Courtyard at 2pm on most Wednesdays during the Exhibition. Please call 01805 626810 to check.

Colin Andrewswww.steelingnature.co.uk

Colin has lived and worked all his life in the heart of the industrial West Midlands, better known as the Black Country and now living in Cornwall. His preferred medium being steel, using its natural flexibility and constraints, he produces these truly unique sculptures. Taking his inspiration from nature and its powerful elements, Colin focuses very heavily on both balance and movement within his sculpture. Each unique piece is both visually attractive and mentally stimulating. Colin hopes you enjoy his work as this is the reason for its creation.

Liz [email protected]

Liz’s main inspiration is drawn from nature, history and mythology. All sculpture work starts with drawings then moves to clay work. From there she makes moulds to produce casts that enable her to create sculptures from natural sources, i.e. slate, marble composities. Liz makes very limited editions of each work usually between 5 and 12 copies, sometimes only one! Her work is ideal for showing in the garden or somewhere special in your home.Fully weatherproofed sculptures

Adrian Bateswww.adrianbatesceramics.com

Adrian was drawn from an early age to letter forms and the way the outer and inner curves and spaces relate to and interact with each other giving grace to the overall figure. He came to understand that these relationships exist everywhere and was eventually drawn to clay because it is so malleable. He explores organic forms in the vessels he makes – defining inner and outer space and exploring the relationship between them. He is influenced by the primal forms contained inside other ‘vessels’ – human, plant and animal forms – all ‘vessels’ containing life and are defined by their interaction with the world around them. In these ways his work aims to connect, not so much with places or objects, but to our relationships with nature and each other…

Simon [email protected]

Simon is a North Devon artist living locally for over 50 years. Although he has always been a painter it is only since being inspired by Rosemoor’s Sculpture Exhibition in 2012/13 that he has moved into sculpting. Drawing from nature for inspiration, the life size sculptures capture and create original and unique designs. The sculptures are hand crafted from recycled mild steel. All sculptures are then lacquered for protection, whilst allowing a natural weathering process.

Dan Cordellwww.dancordell.co.uk

Dan studied Fine Art Sculpture at Loughborough University, gaining a first class honours degree in 2001. Since then has worked as a stone sculptor and a technician before deciding to carve wood full time in 2003. Now carving as a living, he has gained many commissions and been invited to attend events world wide. His love of travel and different cultures has taken him to many exciting places including Cambodia, New Zealand and the South Pacific islands and this has had some influence on his work.

Colleen du Ponwww.colleendupon.co.uk

Working as an Artist blacksmith and Metal Sculptor, Colleen earned a BA in Silversmithing and Metalwork at Camberwell College of Arts in London. Upon graduation in 2002, she was awarded the Bruce Church Travel Scholarship and travelled extensively, working directly with nomadic Blacksmiths in India.Attracted to the physical and romantically alchemical processes in Blacksmithing, the forging of metals, her work is a quest to explore aspects of our relationship to the natural environment. Natural growths and forms, organic and dynamic, and mythological symbolism are all suggested in her unique way of presenting both figurative and abstract forms in steel.Snowdrop - £595Forget Me Not - Scorpioid Cyme Arc - £995Forget Me Not - Inflorescent - £995Japanese Anemone - £195eachButtercups - £1,195

Karen Edwardswww.karenedwardsceramics.co.uk

Karen’s sculptures are individually made in stoneware, using handbuilding techniques of coiling, slabbing, pinching and carving. This means that no two pieces will be identical. The natural colouring and strong forms are designed to complement any garden, from traditional to modern, and are equally suitable for enjoyment inside the home. Karen’s interest in plants and enjoyment of the landscape around her Somerset home has a bearing on her work. Visitors are very welcome to visit Karen’s studio, just off the A38 near Bristol airport.

Ptolemy Elringtonwww.hubcapcreatures.com

Ptolemy has always liked the creative process. He studied art and design in Bradford in the eighties and was very fortunate in earlier life to have parents who encouraged him whenever he made or drew something. Now he runs his own business making sculptures out of recycled materials. He finds the various shapes of the raw materials mentally stimulating, and the use materials he discovers opens up a dialogue about recycling, re-designing and the value of nature. He mostly makes animals; fish and birds because nature has always drawn his eye and this subject seems to suit him.

Eilean Elandwww.eileaneland.co.uk

Eilean has lived in North Devon for the last eleven years and is really enjoying having time to make sculpture. She uses a range of hand building techniques to produce harmonious and beautiful pieces. Finding inspiration in natural organic forms, the coast and beach, she wrestles with the clay and the processes of production until something pleasing emerges, often exploring a theme in several pieces of work. Slips, glazes and oxides are used to enhance form and character. Designed to be displayed in the garden, these pieces bring joy throughout the year and are possibly at their happiest during the winter months when the garden is quieter.

Ash Tree Potterywww.ashtree-pottery.co.uk

Ash Tree Pottery was set up in 1995 by Rowan Fawdon and her husband Neil. Whilst Rowan is the potter, Neil handles the great diversity of other requirements of a business from administration to electrics, and a ready supply of tea and constructive criticism! Rowan’s interest in ceramics arose as a pre-school child, having a handy supply of clay in her parent’s garden. The opportunity to take ceramics as an exam subject at school introduced her to throwing. Both hand building and throwing have continued into her adult life with various training courses adding new ideas and a greater depth of knowledge.

Paul Harveywww.paulharveysculpture.co.uk

Paul has been sculpting since the age of ten, has sold work to the Royal family and has exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show. His studio is set in the Hampshire countryside, on the edge of a pond, which has been developed over time into a small nature reserve. This has encouraged many of the birds he sculpts to show themselves in their true and natural light. Birds were an interest from an early age, having kept many species in aviaries, he was keen to carve them in wood. However, birds with their delicate features didn’t lend themselves to wood carving, so the design had to be simplified, a style that combined with his other great interest Art Deco and this forms the basis of his work today. Adrian Graywww.stonebalancing.com

Adrian Gray is the pioneer of stonebalancing art. His work is predominantly sculpture and photography based on the natural world of balance. He creates balancing sculptures using weathered stone, photographing them in natural locations to capture their transient beauty. Adrian also creates balanced sculptures as private commissions for the garden, home or workplace. He films the initial balance and then fixes the sculpture in its new location. In the past 16 years Adrian’s work has evolved to include new ideas and themes, butthe predominant feature remains the beauty and seemingly impossible nature of balance.Under the Moon - £3,600Flames Afraid - Petrified - £3,500Nature’s Puzzle - £4,600Bent out of Shape - £2,900Squeezing the Planet - £3,900Little Owl - £255 (post £4.00 per foot)

George [email protected]

George Hider is a West Country artist working for the last 12 years from his home in South Somerset. He uses his natural talent to create life-like forms from locally sourced recycled steel. Every piece of recycled metal is carefully formed and welded into place so each sculpture is unique. Small sculptures are lacquered, suitable for placing indoors or in the garden. Large sculptures are protected with lanolin, a natural product from sheep’s wool, which allows them to weather and take on a natural appearance.

Jane Hendersonwww.ceramic-gardens.co.uk

Following a foundation course at West Surrey College of Art and Design, I studied fine art and ceramics at Syracuse University in America, before completing my degree in interior design at Kingston University. My inspiration comes from my favourite places: the seashores of Orkney and Devon, where I am captivated by the way in which plants and flowers manage to flourish in amongst rocks and large pebbles. These pebble totems are a new development and reveal an on-goingfascination I have with stones, in all their various forms. I particularly like the gravity defying character of these totems. Placing the weighty elements at the top of the iron rods gives them a gentle swaying movement in the garden.

Renée Kilburnwww.reneekilburn.com

Renée’s artistic journey started in Sweden as a painter. It was only when she took her first pottery class that she realised what was missing. Glaze! She needed to paint on glaze where magic happens in the firing process. In 1994 she moved to London to study Ceramic Design at Central St Martins. During that time she also worked as an assistant to ceramic artist Kate Malone. This was where she understood that clay could become so much more than what she had experienced up to that point. Her work has developed since then to be tactile, painterly and truly unique. Stoneware clay really can become bright and have “movement” when fired. Her inspiration comes from nature, interpreting what she has seen more than copying. The success of his first garden sculptures in the spring of 2013 gave Chris the confidence to create his own website. Chris’ simple interpretation of leaves and buds in steel, stand out well against a garden backdrop. His designs have 360 degree interest, framing plants and buildings, while the steel surfaces reflect both sky and vegetation.

Ian’s current work is mainly in stainless steel which is such a wonderful medium for garden sculptures. Its neutral colour sits comfortably in any background, reflecting the colours around it and changing with the light and the seasons. This use of modern materials to create natural forms allows them to sit comfortably in either traditional gardens among the real counterparts they seek to emulate or in the harsh minimalist landscape of modern architecture. Wherever you place them they take on a new life, as strong and delicate as their natural counterparts.

Glenn Martinwww.glennmartinsculptor.co.uk

A self-taught eco-sculptor, Glenn actually studied 3D design at Leeds Metropolitan University and is now based on the Isle of Wight. Preferred mediums are reclaimed materials, from plastics and glass to metals and wood. Sculptures can be either one or several materials. Influences of creativity are mainly derived from nature. From designing and building decor installations in nightclubs to community sculptures working with young people. Glenn has always kept his work diverse. In recent years he has gravitated towards only using recycled materials in his art. Although this is not achievable for every project it is a philosophy he likes to uphold wherever possible.Sea Glass Octupus - £2,300Twist - £2,000Borrowed Protection - £2,200Walking Ammonite - £1,600

Orchard Pottery is a small studio pottery – the partnership of Doreen Gardner and Tony Smither, in business since 1980. Doreen & Tony work predominately in ceramics using most of the manufacturing processes available. These include coiling, press moulding, slip casting, throwing, extruding, and slab building. On many pieces two or more techniques are employed. Recently some sculptures have been produced in cold-cast bronze resin and foundry bronze. All of the ceramic pieces are frostproof stoneware so that they can all be safely used in the garden all year round.

Tess Wilmotwww.tesswilmot.co.uk

Devon born sculptor Tess Wilmot interprets domestic and wild animals in cast stone. Following creative work in Europe in the 1980s and 90s, Tess returned to her roots in the Erme Valley near Ivybridge, setting up her Riverside Studio in 1994. Using the colours of mainly local powdered stone as her palette, Tess creates tactile sculptures with realistic markings. Her distinctive method of bonding the natural coloured stone within each figure, rather than painting the colours on afterwards, results in an individual polished stone finish. Each piece is important to Tess, so even when they have very fine detail or texture, they always feel wonderful to touch.
