Many of you correctly identified our mystery local landmark as the bridge which spans the Cloud Trail. It is part of the great, traffic free, off-road route which follows the disused Derby, Melbourne and Ashby branch railway from Worthington and Cloud quarry, before joining the Trent and Mersey canal to Swarkestone.

This month’s prize has been won by J M Croson and our picture shows the prize draw being performed by Grace Fowkes of Jeff Fowkes Wheel Ltd (see their advert on page 18).

Let’s see how well you do with our next landmark!

There are almost fifty Interest Groups with something to suit most tastes from the traditional to the technological.

The speaker at June’s meeting will be Bev Smith, CEO of North West Leicestershire District Council. Bev’s talk will focus on her own career and the latest developments at the District Council. To listen to Bev and find out more about Whitwick and District U3A, come along to St. David’s Church Hall, Broom Leys, Coalville LE67 4RL at 1.45 for a 2.00pm start. The U3A is a non-political and non-religious organisation: everyone is welcome.

WE LOVE OUR PETS ❤ WE LOVE OUR PETS WE LOVE OUR PETS ❤ WE LOVE OUR PETS

All pet related services tend to be busier in the summer months, whether it is pet-friendly accommodation, pet travel specialists, pet sitters, boarding kennels or other holiday-related pet activities. Making your bookings well in advance avoids stress and possible disappointment. So, sort out your plans as early as possible to give yourself the widest range of options and the best value.

If you are planning to send your pet to a boarding establishment, there are a few simple rules to follow to ensure your peace of mind, in the knowledge that you pet is in capable and caring hands. It is essential to first check that it is reputable. If possible, go and have a look around yourself and check that they have the qualifications to care for your pet in the way that you would want them to. It is also important to ensure that your pet has all the necessary inoculations. If vaccinations have gone out of date, your pet could be refused entry to the boarding premises at the last minute.

Having your pet minded in a home environment can be a good alternative. Your pet dog or cat is used to living it’s life in a family set up, with freedom to go where they wish, when they wish, with people constantly interacting with them. This can be in someone else’s

home or in your own home.

You may decide to ask a friend or relative to care for a pet, but there are also professional pet carers who will undertake this job. This can work well, especially for independent-minded cats or for sociable dogs who are easy for people to look after in their own homes.

If you do decide upon the ‘home-boarding’ option, it is advisable to check that the service providers are licensed, as required by law. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people offering this service that are not licensed and pet owners are not always aware of this requirement.

The ideal that you are seeking, and which you should be able to find, is that your pet ends up having as enjoyable holiday break as yourself. If you plan carefully and thoughtfully, then this is a realistic goal.

We seem to have waited a long time for it, but summer is eventually here! Time to think about packing our bags and heading off for a break. The holiday is booked, new summer outfits packed, sunscreen, sunglasses and sun hats at the ready; but, hang on to your flip-flops a minute! Have you made plans for your pet’s holiday care? After all, they deserve a great holiday too!

• Are you at home during the day?• Have a very secure garden?• No young children.• Do you love dogs?• Very flexible and fits into your

lifestyle• We are THE alternative to kennels

in the area.• Then maybe being one of our many loving dog carers

would be ideal for you!

Your local independent pet food specialist.

Poor Bertie was a happy little parrot until, sadly, his owner passed away. The stress of losing his best friend caused Bertie to start plucking his feathers and he ended up in the sad state you see now.

Plucking is quite common in captive parrots and can be caused by simple things such as children, other pets, poor diet, losing a friend or of course it could be an illness. Any plucking should be a visit to your avian vet for a check up.

At Coalville Pet Supplies (sister company to Midland Parrots) we often see parrots that have plucked their own feathers. Generally, the first thing we hear from people is that he has been mistreated and of course pass judgement on the owner and usually accusing them of cruelty to the bird.

More often this is not the case at all, and plucking is usually caused by the causes mentioned above or even a deficiency of something such as calcium. Parrots are very intelligent and emotional birds that can live for 50 years plus.

In Bertie’s case the owners son made the right decision to find the little chap a caring, forever home and he has now settled down to a happy life here at Midland Parrots where he gets the love and attention he needs.

We need to always remember that some families don’t want pets or perhaps the condition of the house is that they cannot keep animals. So let us not judge. Bertie may or may not get some feathers back, but he will always be cared for and just be Bertie.

A HAPPY ENDING FOR BERTIE THE SAD LITTLE PARROT!

Reliable, Affordable, LocalContinuing our series of new topical short stories featuring that mischievous rail dog, Ruffle, called ‘Ruffle’s Walks’...

Within each story Ruffle will send a secret word to his readers in the form of underlined, italic capital letters scattered in the text. Once you have found the letters, rearrange them to form a word that is relevant to that month’s story. At the bottom of each story it will tell you how many letters you are looking for. The actual word answer will be shown on page 31. Woof - have fun!

For more information about Ruffle’s storybooks visit www.ruffletheraildog.co.uk

Ruffle’s Walks – crayon rubbingsRuffle walked towards the station. He could see Eric sitting on one of the green benches on the station platform with blank sheetS of papers on his knees and some on the floor.

Eric had volunteered to organise an activity for the children’s party that weekend – where the Children and grandchildren of the people who worked on the railway came for a day of fun. But try as he might, Eric just couldn’t think of something interesting and unusual for the children to do.

Ruffle trotted over to Eric, stepping on one of the sheets of paper lying on the floor.

‘Ruffle!’ exclaimed Eric. ‘Look what you’ve donE. You’ve made a perfect dirty pawprint right in the middle of the sheet…Wait a minute!’

Eric suddenly jumped up. ‘That’s it! A quiz for the children based on identifying objects from rubbings. Thank you Ruffle!’

Ruffle wagged his tail. He wasn’t surE what he’d done to please Eric, but whatever it was – Eric liked it!

Eric quickly got to work rubbing crayon over plain sheets that he placed on all sorts of surfaces around the station: the bricks on the station wall, the wooden Bench, the footplate of the green engine, the bark on one of the large trees near the bridge. Ruffle patiently followed Eric around the station as he collected a variety of rubbings.

‘That’s the last one done! I will number each one and the children will Have to guess what the things/places are from the rubbings,’ explained Eric. ‘And the last one for them to identify…will be your paw print, Ruffle!’

Ruffle wagged his tail agaiN at Eric. It sounded as though the activity day would be just fine!

®

Why not organise your own crayon rubbings quiz? See what unusual objects you could take rubbings of to test your friends and family – perhaps you might even find a paw…!

Try the Ruffle “Find the word” competition - this month’s word has 7 letters. The answer is on page 31.

St Denys pupils get active and ‘arty’ for Summer!Year 2 pupils recently returned from their residential trip to Sherwood Forest with lots of happy memories to share. Meanwhile, back at school, every pupil participated in an outdoor assembly, in which they displayed their country dancing skills to their families, including a colourful, traditional Maypole dance. This annual workshop is always popular with the pupils and provides an unusual incentive to get active. In May, pupils came to school in their ‘favourite shoes’, to celebrate ‘Happy Shoesday’ as part of a national initiative aimed at encouraging children to walk to school. All donated money will be given to Living Streets who are the charity behind this fantastic scheme.

Pupils will be getting ‘arty’ at the beginning of June with an ‘Arts Week’; whilst later in the month, by way of contrast, children will have the opportunity to sample a wide range of sports, as part of ‘International Sports Week’.

St Denys main fundraising event of the year, the Summer Fair, will be taking place on 3rd July with a variety of stalls, tombolas and refreshments and the annual sponsored walk around the school field will also be taking place, with the aim of raising funds for the school.

Old furniture gets a new lease of life at Up-Cycled Vintage ChicSharing the same premises at 50 High Street Coalville, Up–Cycled Vintage Chic is an integral part of Kats Antique Vintage and Collectible centre. Here, this wonderful business transforms old furniture into amazing new pieces.

Marie Davenport is a specialist at restoring pieces of furniture that has seen better days and the results can be astounding. With a natural artistic flair Marie began restoring furniture eight years ago and her passion for the art is evident when you speak to her.

‘You need to know what you want the result to be, and of course preparation is everything plus using the correct products’ she says. And in the shop she supplies the full range of top class products from ‘FRENCHIC’ including paint and waxes right through to brushes and finishing coats.

As well as supplying furniture for the shop, Marie also takes on outside commissions and these are increasing as her reputation expands. Marie also runs Beginners Workshops where she can pass on her expertise and passion for the craft and she says that with a little guidance anyone with a scrap of artistic flair can create something amazing that will be treasured for many years.

Some people call this craft up – cycling but after looking at some of her finished pieces perhaps a better term would be ‘re- invigorating’. The feedback on her work has been second to none and to view her work it would be worthwhile viewing her Facebook

page on Kats Antique Vintage & Collectibles Centre.

Better still, why not call in at the shop and see the actual products themselves and perhaps join her workshop.

CUT OUT AND KEEP TRADE DIRECTORY

We have received this picture from Ibstock Historical Society, showing an enamel sign or badge, bearing the initials M.C.L.C.C Ibstock District. This is a real mystery, as even the Historical Society members have been unable to determine what the initials stand for! So, can anyone out there shed some light on this, please?

Some suggestions that we have come up with here at the Community Voice office include; ‘Mandarin Chinese Language and Culture Club’, Ibstock District or ‘Mrs Cooper’s Lonely Cats Club, Ibstock District!!

We are sure that you will have some much more sensible and hopefully, more accurate, suggestions! We feel sure it will be familiar to someone, who will be able to tell us the exact origin of this piece of local historic memorabilia and which bygone group it represents.

BANG ON!Last month, we featured a photograph of a mystery object and asked if any of our readers knew what it was. We are very grateful to Mr John Bond, who not only identified the object, but was also able to provide us with a very comprehensive and informative description;

“The mystery object is an explosives powder tin. It would have been used in the coal mines. Before going into the mine, the miner would collect his allocated amount of explosive to be used that shift. The surface building where the explosives were stored was called the Powder Magazine; the Magazine still stands at (the site) of Snibston mine. Two types of explosive were in common use; Unigel and Dynagex, one for blasting stone and the other for blasting coal. Obviously, the more powerful was for the stone. Both explosives were manufactured by Nobel’s Explosives Company.”

We also asked for similar photos, to see if we could baffle you completely. As always, we had a great response so see the article to the right for this month’s ‘Mystery Object’.

Liverpool and China’s Terracotta Army with Roberts HolidaysThe Terracotta Warriors having proved very popular and are certainly attracting the crowds to Liverpool in 2018 – join Roberts on a day out or Shortbreak away and make sure you’re part of the experience!

For over 2,000 years, an underground army of life-sized terracotta warriors secretly guarded the tomb of China’s First Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, until a chance discovery in 1974 unlocked the mysteries of a vanished empire. Roberts Holidays are offering you the opportunity to visit Liverpool’s National Museum and the unmissable exhibition showcasing objects from one of the world’s greatest archaeological discoveries. The exhibition features ten life-size figures from the First Emperor’s burial pit, including one horse, amongst more than 180 spectacular artefacts from museums across Shaanxi Province excavated over the last 40 years from the Imperial Mausoleum and selected tombs - more than half of which have never been on show in the UK before. These spectacular artefacts will shed light on the Emperor’s pursuit of immortality and show how he prepared for the afterlife, as well as help us to understand more about everyday life in China more than two thousand years ago.

BUDDING archaeologists are being invited to dig deep and uncover history with Market Bosworth Society’s Community Archaeological dig. Held on the 21st and 22nd of July, it is set to be the second dig of the planned two-year project, with last year’s event yielding over 80kg of historic finds. Nigel Palmer, chairman of the society, has urged anyone interested to visit the website to find out more. He said: “The page will also lead you to last year’s reports produced by Mathew Morris, of the University of Leicester Archaeological Services, our partners. “You can also watch the brilliant DVD ‘Pits, Pots and Pipes’ (my challenge is to find anyone not smiling). “Don’t miss out on the fun. If you don’t want to volunteer but want to see what we are doing, you will also be able to visit some of the pits and see history being discovered right before your eyes.” 25 more test pits will be dug in different locations around the town, and there will be an archaeology festival on Saturday on the Parish Field, Park Street, in Market Bosworth, which will give visitors the opportunity to make a Medieval tile, watch a flint-knapper at work, see finds and artefacts from last year and watch metal detectorists at work.

For more information, visit www.marketbosworthsociety.com/bosworth-links and, if you would like to get involved, fill in a volunteer form.

Last chance to take part in something truly amazing. Come and be a time traveller!

I am PCSO 6596 Rose and I am a Harm Reduction officer based at Coalville police station my role involves supporting vulnerable individuals and key locations which have become frequent victims of crime or Anti Social Behaviour, ASB.

My aim in my Harm reduction role is to reduce and mitigate risk to persons and locations.

I have a number of repeat locations and persons which I manage on a daily basis, I do this by working with partner agencies such as the local council, social services, and housing authorities to address concerns or issues and deal with victims and perpetrators appropriately.

On a typical shift I commence my duties and look through the recent reports to evaluate any recent intelligence or crimes and the impact they may have on potential victims or communities,

from there if I am not visiting victims I am in contact with most suitable agency to deal with the situation.

Some of my work often revolves around working with victims of Domestic violence, Alcohol and Drug misuse which are all sensitive subjects and are often linked with one another requiring more than one approach.

A lot of problems police get called to can be dealt with by having a better understanding and communication with the people that live in or at that location and the neighbourhood that surround them. I work with local residents to identify problem areas and addressing these according.

By doing this the demand and threats are reduced where harm risk was high in the past.

Home burglaries have seen an increase in the last 5 years so here at Progress we want to offer you 8 simple pieces of advice to make sure you home is secure.

With two thirds of burglars gaining entry through a door and One third through a window, fitting your doors and windows with good locks can go a long way to deterring them.

Most burglars are opportunists and they will look for unlocked doors or opened windows to get in.

1. Make sure you home has a 10 point locking system.

2. Keep you ladders and garden tools locked away.

3. Keep your keys, including car keys in a safe place, next to your bed at night is best, don’t leave them in locks or lying around the house. Remember, the first places a burglar will look for a door key is, under the doormat, in a flower-pot or even with a device through your letterbox.

4. Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your home for you, if you’re away why not ask them to park on your driveway.

5. Check the exterior of your home, are the windows and doors secure enough?

6. Consider joining a Neighbourhood watch scheme.

7. Make sure you windows are lockable.

8. Invest in an alarm system.

If you would like to discuss the security of you home please give us a call on 01530 812299. Here at Progress Windows we are always happy to provide you with a FREE no obligation quotation along with expert advice to ensure you feel your home is safe.

HOW FAR DOES YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE TRAVEL?Here at The Community Voice, we love to find out just how far our magazine travels, especially in the approaching holiday season.

Last year, Mr and Mrs Bott of Thringstone, enthusiastically took up our challenge and travelled over 1500 miles, accompanied by their copy of the magazine! So, if you find yourself reading The Community Voice whilst relaxing in some quintessential English seaside town, sight-seeing in some exotic spot or even on a snow covered peak, please let us know! Not that we wouldn’t take you at your word, of course, but photographic evidence is required! A prize will be, once again, awarded to the owner of most travelled copy.

Happy travelling!

THE BENEFITS OF ‘THE SCIATIC PAIN RELIEF CUSHION’A sciatica relief cushion, designed by local Remedial and Sports Massage Therapist, Ian Garfield, was launched at The Back Pain Show in Birmingham, back in 2017. Through a combination of Ian’s knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology and his engineering design skills, he developed the first prototype for the sciatic pain relief device. From this prototype, with the specialist knowledge of his co-directors, and patient feedback, he went on to develop the Sciatic Pain Relief Cushion.

Mrs M. of Ibstock has this to say about the effectiveness of the aid;

“Until about 8 months ago, I had more or less resigned myself to the ‘fact’ that I had

to put-up with the pain in my legs and back. I surmised that it was most likely ‘due to my age’ or hereditary; the usual suspects! I had become accepting of a certain amount of pain, particularly at night and after sitting or standing for any length of time. I just kept taking the tablets and hoping for the best!

However, I have discovered that it doesn’t have to be like that! I went along to see Ian at Rossendale Healing Hands for a massage and he introduced the Sciatic Pain Relief Cushion to me. He explained that the cushion allows gentle stretching of the sciatic nerve whilst sitting, without the pressure. I now use it for sleeping and sitting on, particularly on long car or coach journeys. I used to get out of bed or emerge from the car feeling about twice my actual age, but now I feel very little discomfort or stiffness, if any, in either my back or my legs.

Together, with a regular massage and the use of my sciatic cushion, my range and ease of movement has been increased and rendered virtually pain-free. This has enabled me to participate in much more physical exercise, such as walking and swimming and has, thereby, enhanced my general well-being.”

Market Bosworth Country Show will be holding Shetland pony and Pony Club show jumping classes at this year’s Show as well as those for side saddle riders and heavy horses. There will be cattle, sheep and pigs to see and stroke.

Dogs are central to this year’s entertainment with a fun dog show and displays by Nuneaton Dog Club. Canine Partners, who are this year’s charity, will show how they train their assistance dogs to meet the needs of individuals with even the most complex physical disabilities.

Bob Hogg who has earned himself an excellent reputation for his professional and highly entertaining displays, will share his unique training methods and provide great fun for the children, as they are invited into the arena whilst the dogs work ducks around an obstacle course, down a slide and into a pool.

Vintage tractors and farm machinery will be on display. Country crafts will be featured and include chainsaw sculpture, wickerwork and coracle making. There will be opportunities for hands on experience of bee keeping and archery plus animals and reptiles to pet.

The Flower Show has classes for arrangers, gardeners and photographers plus classes for children and cooks. We hope the children’s painted stone entries will be used to support Isla Tansey’s campaign #islastones online.

A range of crafts and skills will be exhibited in the Craft Tent and there are lots of shopping opportunities all around the Show from cars to cheese.

Come to the Show and take a thrilling helicopter flight over the town with Turweston Helicopters. Flights are only £45.00 per person, book in advance for a time of your choice http//www.turwestonhelicopters.co.uk/book-a-flight

Have you committed Bigamy? Some divorced people who have remarried may have inadvertently committed bigamy after being wrongly granted a divorce. It seems that there have been cases where the appropriate time limits have not been complied with. For example. A Petition for divorce cannot be lodged within 1 year of the marriage. This means 366 days of the marriage. Similarly, the period of Separation or Desertion must be 2 clear years.

There is no provision for waiving these time limits and therefore if the time limits have been infringed - THE DIVORCE IS INVALID.

The consequences of this can be catastrophic and include,a) If you have remarried, you have committed Bigamy.b) If you die, your original husband/wife is still your next of kin

and inherits your estate on Intestacy.c) Any additional children are illegitimate.d) You will have to start your original divorce proceeding again.

The good news is that the Court will waive the Court fee!e) If you have remarried, you will have to marry again.

The Court has been directed to approach affected parties in a sympathetic way. If you get a letter from the Court (you have probably changed address since the divorce) DO NOT IGNORE IT. If in doubt, consult your Solicitor.

Local Solicitor, Trevor Moore, continues with his advice on various points of law
