WELcOME... to the latest edition of community Voice!

Spot The Local Landmark...Can you advise where these historic buildings pictured on our front cover can be found, when were they built what was the original use and what are they used for today?

If you know exactly what this is, and where, please send your answer to Graham Tyers at The Voice, c/o 57 High Street, Ibstock, or email him at: [email protected]

The lucky winner (drawn first out of the hat of all correct entries) will receive a tasty ‘tea for two’ at the The Old School Tearooms, 57 High Street, Ibstock. Good luck!

Last Month’s answer....This one must have been a bit more tricky as we did not receive quite as many as last time - still a large response with a high level of correct answers. The draw was made by three generations of the Bunting family. Shirley Bunting is pictured below drawing the winning name, ably assisted by little Aiden and watched by mum Caroline. The winner of the free “Tea for Two” at the The Old School Tearooms is June Newman of High Street Ibstock. June correctly advised that this was a picture of the old Gibbet Post on Gibbet Lane, Bilstone near Market Harborough.

In 1801 the gibbet post was erected to display the hanged body of John Massey, a local agricultural worker, wrestler and drunkard. He was sentenced at Leicester Assizes for the murder of his wife. After being hanged at Red Hill, Birstall, his body was taken back to the parish where the crime had been committed (as was the practice of the day) and hung in chains from the gibbet post as a warning to other potential evil do’ers!

It is understood that his body and later his bones could still be seen hanging from the post eighteen years later - what a sight that must have been. Ah well - the good old days!

Let’s see how many of you know the landmark in this months edition!!

Following the success that constable Robinson and I had in organising the two christmas parties for the mentally impaired children at the two schools in Ibstock and Hugglescote, we then received authorisation from the staff at the cropston Drive school for the older mentally disadvantaged children to be taken on a day out to Drayton Manor theme park.

To raise the money for this we made an appeal for Green Shield stamps. Our appeal was taken up by the editor of the Coalville Times newspaper and this resulted in numerous donations from local residents. One of our colleagues at the police station then suggested a sponsored walk which resulted in several members of staff volunteering to do this.

We then obtained permission from County Hall to hold the sponsored walk round Bradgate Park. The walk proved so successful that we raised more money than we anticipated (in fact too much). With such a large amount of cash we approached East Midlands Airport to enquire if we could charter an aircraft, but unfortunately this was not possible. However, we went ahead in hiring two coaches to transport the children to Drayton Manor them park.

Before the final arrangements were complete we received a telephone call from the East Midlands airport stating that they had an empty plane flying from East Midlands to Birmingham airport and that we could have the use of it to transport the children. With this wonderful news, on the day in question, we boarded the children on to the two coaches (with the help of several volunteers) and drove to the East Midlands airport where the coaches were allowed on to the tarmac to discharge the children on to the aircraft.

This was a very excitable time for the children as most of them had never been on an aircraft before. On our arrival at Birmingham airport our two coaches were waiting on the tarmac for us, and with the children safely on board, we set off for Drayton Manor.

I had previously arranged for the park to supply both lunch and tea and each child was given £4 to spend on the various rides, although some of the proprietors allowed the children on for nothing. The children had a really exciting time and I received two proposals of marriage from two of the girls thanking me for their memorable day out.

On our arrival back at Cropston Drive, the parents were waiting to greet the children home and were inundated by the exciting stories the children had to tell them.

The Green Shield stamps, that members of the public had generously donated, were used to buy gifts for the children who were too ill to go on the outing Drayton Manor.

It was not that long ago that the most exciting afternoon a Teddy Bear could expect was a picnic with his friends. How times have changed!A sunny Saturday afternoon in September saw many brave bears take part in a sponsored parachute jump from the bell tower at St Denys Church, Ibstock.

Anxious owners waited for their furry friends beneath the tower whilst a first aid station was on standby to attend to any bumps and bruises gained on the way down!

An array of stalls, ranging from hook-a-duck to homemade cakes served as a great distraction to calm the bear’s pre-jump nerves.

Afterwards, one Teddy Bear was overheard saying “It’s the most terrified I have been since the family dog tried to bury me in the garden”.

All money raised will be put towards the church bells appeal.

The teddy bears parachute jump raised approximately £330, which went into the church’s general funds, all of which have enabled the church to allocate £5,000 to the Church Bells Appeal. The total raised for the bells stands at an impressive £6,639 so far. The church are applying for more grants, and the money donated at the Christmas Tree festival will also be added to the bell fund.

The Parochial Church Council are now in the process of applying for a faculty from the diocese, which is needed before the work can be started.

Ashby Concert Band, under the baton of Adrian Aston, gave a highly appreciated and very popular concert at The Palace Community Centre Ibstock at the end of September. Appropriately for The Palace, an old (and still current) cinema, the theme for the evening was ‘Music from the Stage and Screen’. The programme of music included such favourites as

‘Fiddler on the Roof’, ‘Miss Saigon’ and ‘Mary Poppins’. Ashby Concert Band have a long and happy association with The Palace, which spans back over the last 15 years and were involved in raising funds towards its restoration. FANCY PUTTING YOUR BRAIN TO THE TEST?Here’s a bit of fun to get you thinking.(Answers on page 15 - no cheating!)

Firework funnies...

The Legal Eagle Answers your questionsAndrew Eagle Senior Partner of Josiah Hincks solicitors answers your legal questions. Each month I will answer questions submitted by readers.

Mr W of Ibstock asks – I have cut the grass on the land at the side of my house for past 40 years. Now someone has fenced it off and wants to apply for planning. Do I have any claim to this land?

The question you are asking is have I acquired possessory title by adverse possession. In order to claim the land you would need to apply to the Land Registry and provide evidence that you have had been in exclusive occupation for more than 10 years. The fact that someone else has recently fenced this land would indicate that it wasn’t previously fenced and therefore it would be almost impossible for you to show exclusive occupation. The mere cutting of grass or tending to the land would not give you that right.

Mrs I of Peggs Green asks – My neighbour is in the process of extending their house right out to the boundary and next to my own building. They obtained planning permission which I objected to and I am now worried that they will damage my property by building so close to it.

Your neighbour has been granted planning permission but they still have other legal formalities to comply with including the Third Party Wall Act. This Act requires your neighbour to provide you with a

notice of the works they intend to do and to have an agreement with you about those works and the steps they will take to protect your property. You should ask your neighbour to cease work immediately while this is sorted out and also inform building control of your issues.

Mr J of Whitwick says my girlfriend is moving into the house which I own. I don’t want to put her name on the deeds but she is going to pay half towards the mortgage and all the bills. If we split up can she claim anything from me?

When you allow someone else to live in your house they have to show capital contribution above and beyond normal living expenses before they can claim an interest in the property. if you are concerned about any future claims you should consider getting a formal living together agreement drawn up to protect you.

Please note that the replies given are specific to the individual circumstances and Josiah Hincks accepts no liability for anyone acting in reliance upon the comments here. If you would like us to answer your question please send the details to the Legal Eagle, Josiah Hincks, solicitors, 39-41 Belvoir Road, Coalville, LE67 3PD.

I walked passed a burnt out building with a broken sign saying “Fireworks”.How right they were.

A policeman arrested two kids on bonfire night. One for drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. He charged one and let the other one off!

Neighbours told me to bring bangers and rocket to their firework party. My sausage and peppery lettuce sandwiches didn’t go down well.

Putting names to faces from days gone by!In the October issue of the Voice, we featured an old photo of Heather school children and their teacher and asked if anyone knew any of the people in the photograph?

Mrs Stephanie Bourne of Coalville has come forward to say that she has a copy of this photograph herself and that the young lady on the far left of the second row is her Aunt, Florence Roe and the tall girl in the middle of the second row is believed to be Mrs Mugglestone. We understand that the lad second from the right of the middle row is Horace Cooper and the boy third from the right of the back row is thought to be Billy Everett. Finally, we think that the form master was a Mr Dawkin. It’s fascinating how an old photo like this still lives in the memory of local people! If anyone has further information, please contact us at the numbers and addresses below.

Mrs Bourne has also kindly supplied us with a second photo of the teachers from Ibstock High School, which we believe was taken in the late 1940s or early 1950s - complete with a strange black blob in the top left corner, maybe a rogue photographer’s thumb?

Apart from the person third from the right on the back row, who we understand was a Miss Simpson, we have no knowledge of any of the other people in the picture. Could anyone shed any light on this and put a name to a face?

If so, then please email Graham at [email protected] or phone 01530 267300. Alternatively, post or drop off the details at Ibstock Business Centre, 57, High St, Ibstock, Leics LE67 6LH.

We’d love to hear from you!

Here’s a message we had from Ibstock Tile and Bathroom, one of our regular advertisers....“Since advertising in the Community Voice we have noticed that most of our customers have come from Ibstock and the surrounding villages. We had never advertised in Ibstock before as we didn’t feel the need until the COMMUNITY VOICE was launched!”
