Thanksgiving Dinner Collection

This Sunday Good Shepherd’s St. Vincent de Paul Society would appreciate your help in giving Thanksgiving dinners to a large number of families in our area. We are asking interested parishioners to bring food items (uncooked) to make a complete dinner for a family consisting of 4-15 members. There is no cooking or food preparation involved. Suggested items for the Thanksgiving dinner are: frozen turkey (8-21 lbs.), potatoes, boxed mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes, dressing, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls, dessert (frozen pumpkin pie), and any extra items are appreciated. Collection of dinners will take place this Sunday, November 18 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Rooms 28 & 29 (enter building through door #9). Due to limited freezer/refrigerator space, it is difficult to accept dinners before 11:30 a.m. Please provide all food items in a box. This helps us with the collection and distribution of the dinners. If you are unable to purchase a dinner, but would like to participate, you may provide a check payable to Good Shepherd with a note “Thanksgiving Dinner.” We will then purchase the dinner for you. The Good Shepherd St. Vincent de Paul members appreciate your generosity and knowing that when you celebrate Thanksgiving with your family you know you have provided for another family to do the same. What a great gift! If you have any questions, please contact Sandy Robinson at 325-1834. —Bill Geiger, Good Shepherd Vincentian

A Global Day of Giving #GivingTuesday

November 27, 2018 #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving, fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the widely recognized shopping events of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season. This is our first year participating in this global effort. We’ll be raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association. The Alzheimer’s Association is the leading voluntary health organization in Alzheimer’s care, support and research. Their mission is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research; to provide and enhance care and support for all affected; and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. This is a cause that is close to Fr. Tom’s heart as his mother suffers from this disease. We also have many parishioners whose loved ones have this form of dementia. Our goal is to raise $5,000 in a 24-hour period on Tuesday, November 27. This is primarily an online donation venture, but we will also take checks or cash in the parish office. Online donations will be taken on our website at www.good-shepherd.org beginning at 12:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27 and will close at 12:00 a.m. on Wednesday, November 28. You can also go to our parish Facebook page. Cash and checks (note #GivingTuesday on the memo line) may be dropped off at the parish office between 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 27.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Happy Thanksgiving! Even after nearly twenty years of priestly ministry, I have listened to far more homilies than I have preached. I suspect I’m not alone in saying that I remember very few of them! But one line from one homily years ago somehow has stuck with me. The homilist pointed out that, “It is very hard to be grateful and unhappy at the same time.” When we think about the Thanksgiving holiday, what comes to mind? For most of us it’s turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. It might also mean watching a football game or two. And it also means gathering with loved ones to share in all the festivities. And that’s how it should be. But as Catholic Christians, the idea of Thanksgiving has a much richer meaning to it. To be sure, it is to go beyond the ordinary customs and practices of the holiday. Among other things, it is to recognize that blessing is greater than hardship, that mercy is greater than vengeance, and that life is greater than death. It is to recognize that we live our lives in Christ’s death and resurrection, and that this gift is more than we could ever deserve. So how do we respond? Thanksgiving. May it gladden our hearts and help us celebrate what God has done (and continues to do) for us. —Fr. Tom Mannebach

Scripture for Next Week—The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe by Deacon Max Schellman

(This closes the Sunday readings for the Liturgical Year—A new year begins next Sunday with the Season of Advent.) First Reading—Deuteronomy 7:13-14: Daniel describes a vision of the end times when the Son of Man descending from heaven comes. He emerges on clouds and is given his dominion, glory and kingship by God. Second Reading—Revelations 1:5-8: The Book of Revelation also called The Apocalypse presents Christ in his second coming. Written with poetic and mysterious overtones, this book is all about Jesus Christ. In the passage today, Christ emerges on clouds and is given priority over everything. He is king over all; he is totality. He is described as, “…the Alpha and the Omega.” Gospel— John 18-33b-37: Jesus is quizzed by Pilate who asks him what he has done and if he is a king. “King of the Jews” was a messianic title used by the Jews. Pilate saw the title as a challenge to his authority and so his curiosity was motivated by his own self-preservation and protection. Jesus doesn’t answer his questions directly. He states that his kingdom is not of this world. He has come “to testify to the truth.” Those who listen to Jesus are citizens of his kingdom.

Congratulations Tom Kilgore— Champion of Mercy!

Congratulations to Tom Kilgore for being selected as one of only two individuals receiving the annual Catholic Charities “Champion of Mercy” award. Tom was recognized at a special awards program on November 8. Beginning in 2006, Tom began and led a "Hurricane Katrina" ministry at Good Shepherd in response to the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. Working with Catholic Charities, Tom coordinated, led and attended eleven service trips to New Orleans

to assist handicapped and low income home owners rebuild their homes and lives. Over 50 different people from Good Shepherd have spent 150 weeks and contributed 6,000 hours of labor to this effort. Following the Katrina ministry, Tom led and started a similar mission in a remote, impoverished area of southern Kentucky—McCreary County and Whitley City. In August of 2012, 24 volunteers, coordinated by Tom, started “Whitley City Builds” to help construct and repair homes for the needy in this area of Kentucky. Each year, Tom leads two week long work trips dedicated to home building and up-grading. As of July 2018, Tom has led 14 week long trips to Whitley City working on many homes in McCreary County plus the Catholic Chapel in Whitley City. Tom and many volunteers also assist families in Whitley City/McCreary County by collecting good condition used furniture, new furniture and household items to furnish these homes as well as appliances and new mattresses. The ministry also accepts donations of food, clothing, supplies for their clinic and school, and new building materials. We congratulate Tom Kilgore—a true “Champion of Mercy!”

Why do so many avoid tying the knot? What is the “right stuff” for marriage satisfaction?

What do millennials expect marriage to be? Why are there fewer Catholic marriages?

When: Saturday, December 1, 1:30-3:00 p.m. (light lunch served) Where: Room 25 Who Should Come: Millennials with questions and the parents of millennials (and anyone interested in the future of marriage) to hear the research about “strong marriages.” RSVP on the home page of our website or to Jack Peltz at 489-8815 ext. 709 or e-mail [email protected]. Marriage idealizes permanence, and yet it is changing more rapidly than ever. Almost everywhere it is becoming freer, more equal and more satisfying. In fact, wedlock has become so good for some, it is causing unexpected trouble for those with outdated road maps.

Need to Know

Decree on Child Protection The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Decree on Child Protection is our way of protecting all of the vulnerable individuals in our community. If you suspect that someone is being abused, please contact the Coordinator of Ministry to Survivors of Abuse at the Archdiocese at 513-263-6623 as well as local law enforcement. In Hamilton County, you can contact Child Protective Services at 513-241-KIDS (5437). To Report Financial Misconduct If you suspect the misuse or misconduct of Church finances, you may call the EthicsPoint hotline at 1-888-389-0381 or see the Archdiocese website (www.catholiccincinnati.org) under Ministries & Offices, Finance and click the link “To Report Financial Misconduct.” You will be taken to a secure site to file your report.

For confidential information concerning annulments, please call Fr. Jack Wehman at 513-489-8815 ext. 748.

Welcoming We warmly welcome our new parishioners and guests who are joining us today. If you are interested in learning more about Good Shepherd, or would like to register as an official member of the parish, please stop by the Welcome Desk located in our main foyer. A member of our Welcoming Ministry will be honored to assist you.

Baptism Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Please register for Baptism by calling Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761 or e-mail: [email protected]). Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail [email protected]).

First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.

Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Please contact Walter Plummer with any questions (513-489-8815 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Please contact Steve Lindner for information (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]). Preparation for marriage begins eight months before the Sacrament is celebrated. For preparations, call Steve Lindner (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. Each week on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the anointing is offered within Mass (in the church). Please notify Deacon Dennis Berry (513-489-8815, ext. 708, or e-mail: [email protected]) in advance of your need. Our parish priests also come to the sick person at home, in the hospital, or at Hospice.

Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.

Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent.

Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.

Need to Know

All-powerful God, we appeal to your tender care that even as you temper the winds and rains to nurture the fruits of the earth you will also send upon them the gentle shower of your blessing. Fill the hearts of your people with gratitude, that from the earth’s fertility the hungry may be filled with good things and the poor and needy proclaim the glory of your name. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
