President’s Message

It is with great pleasure that I pen these lines for the 14th InternationalPhotographic Exhibition of the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka.

During the past fifty eight years the NPAS has pioneered the development of Photography as art and industry in Sri Lanka. It is due to the remarkable dedication of NPAS that the relationship between Sri Lanka and other countries has increased. In this way I am very proud to state that the photography exhibitions conducted by NPAS are in its heights.

I must state that the honour gained by Sri Lanka among the countries related to FIAP is due to the NPAS

Being an active national institute in FIAP, our dedication in the field of photography Stands out through this exhibition. I am sure this venture would be a great impact to improve our educational, Social Services, Publications, Examinations and other active fields of society.

This international exhibition is a massive collection of representatives from thirty countries in the world and it reflects the modern trend in photography. I believe that this venture will be an immense support and courage to Sri Lankan photography. Hence I would like to offer my heartiest gratitude to those who have extended their contribution and dedication, to make our venture a success.

Message From Executive Director

We are pleased and honored to receive you at this, the Fourteenth International Exhibition of Photography under the expressed patronage of the FIAP. First, this exhibition to me is not merely labeled ‘International’, but this exhibition is International as it has attracted a total of over one thousand seven hundred photographic images from twenty nine countries with the participation of two hundred and seventy seven photographers. Of these, eight hundred images are in monochrome which stresses that this exhibition is an exhibition where creativity in the applied and proven theory and practice in photography is emphasized by many of the author participants.

Secondly, this exhibition gains credibility as the panel of distinguished selectors comprised of Professor Subroto Ray, from Kolkata – India; acting as the Chairman and the four others being the reputed and accepted Sri Lankan photographers; Dr. Uditha Gunasekera, Mr. Bandu Gunaratne, Mr. H.M.R. Perera and Mr. Sarath Perera.

Thirdly, keeping in mind the tremendously exhaustive task that the five selectors were called upon to accomplish, the final selection for the exhibition; as decided by the distinguished panel were a mere two hundred and nine outstandingly artistic exhibits. This alone makes this an exhibition without equal, as only the best of the best of creations being presented at the exhibition.

May I also take this opportunity to thank the eminent panel of selectors, the participants from many countries around the world, not forgetting the large number of entrants from across the width and breadth of Sri Lanka, the valued sponsors and those who have monetarily assisted us to make this event a great achievement; those who provided publicity; my colleagues, members who have assisted us in numerous ways, and those others who have supported this cause continuously.

Message From Director - Exhibitions

The National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka (NPAS) is the only body of its nature in the Island that holds a membership in the prestigious of Interna-tional Federation of Photographic Art. In the past, it has contributed a lot towards the betterment of our photographers in many ways. On this occasion we are organizing the event of the 14th International Exhibition of Photography - 2008 in Colombo from the 10th to the 13th of October at the National Art Gallery. By doing this we intend giving a fair opportunity to all talented photographers in the Island to come forward and exhibit their creations to get exposure, competing in the International arena as over thirty countries have already submitted their creations to us.

Organizing an event of this magnitude is no easy task and I take this opportunity to thank all who supported me, being a driving force behind. I treasure their words of encouragement and at times proper guidance to make this event an absolute success. The long name-list includes firstly those of The President and the board of directors of the National Photographic Art Society of Sri Lanka and secondly, its membership. In addition I must mention the panel of selectors ably led by Prof Subroto Ray of India who contributed immensely towards the success. I also take this opportunity to thank the principal sponsor Mr Roshan Kaluara-chchi; head of marketing Mobitel and co-sponsors Brown & Company, Olympus, Kodak, India Sri Lanka Foundation, Ninehearts, Fuji film and The Ceylon Society of Arts without whom we would still be in the planning stage. Finally hats off to the exhibition committee for their excellent corporation throughout the sessions.

I hope the exhibition will be a success in the eyes of the general public of this country.

Message From The Chairman Selection Panel

Civilization has progressed from age to age and those civilizations that failed to progress simply died out. This is the law of Nature and applies to all aspects of culture, whether scientific or artistic. Progress is the very life culture, and this is the truth of Photography also.

Photography is an ideal combination of Science and Fine Art. Today we find that there has been fabulous progress in the field of photographic technol-ogy, but where is the corresponding advancement in the Art of Photogra-phy? We are still making photographs only of things we can see with our eyes, but man not only sees but also feels and thinks; if Photo-art is to progress, we must try to express our feelings and thoughts. This needs serious experimenting with the Art of Photography. We must think of objects as symbols of thoughts and ideas. A burning Candle can symbol-ize life; an extinguished candle can mean death – and the smoke makes a beautiful pattern too. A book can mean knowledge but burning books mean fanaticism.

There are limitless possibilities in symbolism and surrealism. We must ex-periment with the possibilities if Photographic Art is to survive and prog-ress. If we try ten times and succeed only once, that would be one invalu-able step forward, - one little contribution to PROGRESS.
