PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEJERZY B. GAJEWSKI, MD

Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends:

We have just concluded a very successful section meeting in Saratoga Springs. This is thanks to Dr. Zahi Makhuli and Dr. Gennady Bratslavsky who organised a very interesting and comprehensive scientific meeting combined with very exciting social events. I am sure that all members greatly appreciate their dedication and hard work to put this meeting together.

We will do our best to match these standards at the 67th Annual Meeting to be held in Amelia Island, Florida on November 13-16, 2014. The planning of the meeting is well underway. We welcome and greatly appreciate the help from Northeastern Section staff Leslie Hettenbach, Kristin Pichon, Theresa Rawlings and Drew Shifflet.

The Scientific Committee Chair, Dr. Ricardo Rendon, is a native of Colombia. He completed medical school and residency at the Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia and two years Research and Clinical Fellowship in Urologic Oncology at University of Toronto. An accomplished urologist, he is presently on staff with the Department of Urology at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He will undoubtedly work hard to assemble a superior scientific program.

Amelia Island welcomes everybody. The Ritz-Carlton Hotel’s facilities are perfect to hold this meeting. The accommodations are elegant and the resort provides guests with an unforgettable escape. The resort is located on a grand stretch of the island’s 13 miles of pristine beach. There will be ample opportunities to explore a world of beautiful beaches and outdoor activities.

Amelia Island has a very rich and compelling history. The eight flags flown over the island include those from: France, Spain (many periods), England (the Patriots of Amelia Island), the Green Cross (raised by a self-proclaimed ruler), Mexico (the Mexican Rebel flag), the Confederate States of America, and the United States. The French visited, the Spanish developed, the English named, the Americans tamed and pirates made it intriguing.

My wife Lidia and I would like to invite all of you to come to Amelia Island and enjoy our next section meeting in comfort and world-class-luxury.

TIMOTHY AVERCH, MD, FACS NAMED AS AUA 2014-2015 GALLAGHER HEALTH POLICY SCHOLAROn December 10, the American Urological Association (AUA) named Timothy D. Averch, MD, FACS, the 2014-2015 Gallagher Health Policy Scholar. Dr. Averch joins the prestigious ranks of past Gallagher Health Policy Scholars.

The Gallagher Health Policy Scholar Program, created in honor of former AUA Executive Director G. James Gallagher, is designed to train the next generation of urologists for leadership positions in health policy. Scholars spend a full year engaged in critical seminars, conferences and meetings at the national level, receive mentoring from AUA physicians in senior roles and participate in a week-long health policy seminar for surgeons sponsored by the American College of Surgeons and held at Brandeis University. Scholars also engage in other educational activities that ensure their immersion in and understanding of health policy issues of importance to urology.

“In a field of impressive applicants, Dr. Averch’s accomplishments, particularly his activity on behalf of urology at the national level, stood out and earned him the honor of being selected as the fifth Gallagher Health Policy Scholar,” said AUA Health Policy Chair Dr. David F. Penson, MD, MPH. “The AUA is making great strides in ensuring that we have the best and the brightest young urologists becoming conversant in the full range of regulatory, legislative, quality, reimbursement and legislative issues needed to protect and advance urology’s interests at the local, state and national levels.”

Dr. Averch is Director of Endourology at the University of Pittsburgh, Vice Chair for Quality at the UPP Department of Urology and Division Chief of urology UPMC Presbyterian. He has authored more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals with a focus on stone management and endourology. He is an active volunteer at the national and regional level, currently serving as vice chair of the AUA’s Quality Improvement & Patient Safety Committee and as the Pennsylvania representative to the AUA’s Northeastern Section Board of Directors.

CONGRATULATIONS DR. AVERCH!

FINANCE (DR. ROB SIEMENS)Dr. Siemens presented the internal combined financial statements for the period ending September 30, 2013, including the Combined Statement of Financial Position with Total Assets of $2,163,346, with Net Assets (Equity) of $1,899,827. The Statement of Activities for the year shows total revenue of $77,688 and total expenses $141,025, resulting in an operating deficit of ($63,337). Deferred Annual Meeting Revenue of $259,605 and associated meeting expenses

will be realized in November 2013. Total investment income of $131,805 results in a year-to-date increase in Net Assets of $68,468.

INVESTMENTSMs. Dorothy Boyer, investment advisor, joined the board by telephone and reviewed investment returns and current allocations. The Section’s Merrill Lynch portfolio yielded 7.26% for the 9-month period ending September 30, 2013, and the Board acknowledged that its conservative investment goals continue to be met.

CHANGE IN NOMINATIONS PROTOCOLa. The Board agreed that the composition of the Nominating Committee

should be reorganized to include a group of seven members as the Section’s Core Electorate (to include four members of the Board as well as three other individuals or positions to be determined). This is in line with what the AUA has suggested as a best practice to determine individuals to fulfill Section committee and Board positions as well as nominations to the AUA for AUA committees, awards, external representatives, and the Section’s nomination for AUA President-Elect. The Board further agreed to continue to solicit the Section membership for nominations for many of these opportunities.

b. Representative positions on the Board are currently two-year terms, renewable once. When the Board changed to this 2+2 format four years ago, it was at that time thought that two years was not enough time on the Board, however several board members agreed that a renewed term and additional two years may be too long and may prevent a timely engagement of new members, including those graduates of the AUA/Section Leadership Program. The Board also recognizes that it can be difficult for the Nominating Committee to evaluate and critique a board member when it is felt their term should not be renewed. The possibility of establishing a three-year, non-renewable term will be revisited in March 2014.

HISTORIAN’S REPORT (DR. RON RABINOWITZ)Dr. Rabinowitz reported on the activity of the AUA History Committee including the History of Urology Forum and this year’s History Exhibit “Milestones” which included a long history of urinary stone disease. The “Skeletons in the Closet – Indignities and Injustices in Medicine” exhibit was displayed prominently at the Saratoga Springs meeting and copies of the book are available for sale.

REPORT FROM AUA BOARD REPRESENTATIVE (DR. JOHN DENSTEDT)Dr. Denstedt presented highlights of AUA activities including: AUA’s new Urology Practice Publication, which is slated for first edition in May 2014, AUA’s significant investment in developing data registries and a new online Learning Management System which is a one-stop dashboard for linking all of AUA’s educational products and resources. He reported that Dr. Manoj Monga has been elected as AUA’s Secretary-elect. Other updates included discussion about how the AUA is working to increase the Journal of Urology impact factor, and branding initiatives and new governance strategies with the Urology Care Foundation. He described how AUA’s international initiatives have multiplied in the past two years, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd circle countries being defined and an increasing number of educational programs being held outside the U.S. Lastly, he explained how AUA’s Health Policy division has been reorganized to segregate government relations and advocacy activities from science and quality departments (now under a new S&Q Council).

SCHOLARSHIP RESEARCH COMMITTEE (DR. STEPHEN PAUTLER)a. Young Investigator Research Award. Based on recommendation of

the Scholarship Research Committee, the Board approved Dr. Eric Kaufmann, Roswell Park Cancer Institute, as the 2013 recipient of the Young Investigator Research Award. Dr. Kaufmann specializes in Kidney Cancer.

b. Prize Essay Winners. Ten manuscripts were received for this year’s Resident Prize Essay Contest (2 fewer than in 2012). All winners were recognized at the Annual Meeting by showcasing their poster in the foyer and presenting their research in the Plenary on Friday morning.

c. AUA Research Forum. The Board acknowledged that the Scholarship Research Committee also nominates an individual to present each year at the AUA Annual Meeting Research Forum. This is a highly competitive honor and not all Section nominees are selected. This year Dr. Pautler reached out to Section program directors to solicit names of prominent scholars and will put forward the name to the AUA.

DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE REPORT (DR. JOE GRECO)Dr. Greco reported that industry funding to date totals $278,400, with CME grants revenue matching budget and other industry support falling short, especially from certain a la carte sponsorship opportunities for the Annual Meeting not being sold and not as appealing to industry as in the past. The committee’s efforts include canvassing exhibitors and companies at the AUA Annual Meeting (May), and meeting with Canadian companies at the CUA Meeting (June). The committee strategizes each year to raise funds for the following year and is focusing on a unique meeting later this year in Montreal for the 2015 meeting in Quebec City.

GRANT FOR IVUMEDThe Directors approved the 2013 grant payment of $4,500 for the IVUmed Residents Scholar program. The Board reiterated that these funded scholars should be required to submit their papers as posters at the Annual Meeting, or if possible showcased on the plenary program.

OVERVIEW OF SECTION ACTIVITIESDr. Makhuli provided an overview of activities on behalf of the Board. He congratulated our most recent Section graduates of AUA/Section Leadership class: Dr. Jodi Maranchie (Pittsburgh, PA) and Dr. Wassim Kassouf (Montreal, QC). He spoke about the Section’s ongoing commitment to the Young Investigator grant and Prize Essay Awards programs. He reported that Section leaders continue to plan with nursing organizations (e.g., SUNA, UNC) to consider supplemental nursing component programs to future Section meetings.

FINANCEDr. Siemens, Section Treasurer, presented the year end audited financials at the business meeting on Saturday, November 2. The membership approved the 2012 year end audit, performed by McGladrey LLP. The Section received an unqualified opinion for both entities after having reviewed the 2012 Combined Audited Financial Statements. The statements conform to generally accepted accounting principles and present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of AUA as of December 31, 2012 (See Slides).

MEMBERSHIPDr. Kaufman gave an overview of the Section’s membership which now includes: Active 451, Associate 34, Candidate 249, Senior 171 for a total of 905 members.

WELCOME NEW BOARD MEMBERS

JOSEPH GRECO, MD – PRESIDENT-ELECT

MANAGING MEMBERWestern New York Urology Associates, LLC

Joseph M. Greco, MD is a board certified physician and managing member of Western New York Urology Associates, LLC in Buffalo, New York. He first joined the practice in 1979 after completing his urologic training at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Greco has been a member of both the American Urological Association and the Northeastern Section, in addition to many other organizations, since 1982. During his years of membership, he has been Chair of the Judiciary Committee as well as the Development Committee. Dr. Greco is also Past President of the New York State Urological Society.

OLEG SHAPIRO, MD – YOUNG UROLOGIST, U.S.ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

DEPARTMENT OF UROLOGYSUNY Upstate Medical University

Oleg Shapiro, MD and his family moved from the former Soviet Union to settle in New York City in 1989. After graduating from high school he decided to pursue a degree in Biology in hopes of being accepted into medical school.

Fairly early in his medical career he realized that surgical specialty was his calling. He enjoyed the fast paced environment of the operating room and the thrill of almost immediate patient satisfaction. While going through his training in Urology, Dr. Shapiro started focusing his interest on Urologic cancers. He liked the surgical aspect of treating cancer patients as much as the medical and social aspects.

During his last year of training, he arranged to spend 7 months at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia learning the latest techniques in cancer therapy. This gave Dr. Shapriro a solid foundation on which to build the rest of his career.

When he became an attending, he decided to stay at SUNY Upstate Medical University to help rebuild the department of Urology and establish urologic oncology program. Since he started there almost six years ago, their cancer volume, especially the number of renal and bladder malignancies, has increased dramatically. The residents are involved in several research projects involving kidney cancer.

AUA Residents Bowl

NATIONAL RESIDENTS BOWL – MIXING IT UP FOR ORLANDO 2014The 3rd National Residents Bowl will be held in Orlando at the AUA Annual Meeting. This year’s team is currently being assembled with the help of nominations from each Program Director.

New this year, the AUA is making the Bowl a global event by inviting residents from the countries of Brazil, Egypt, India, Japan, Korea, United Kingdom, Germany and China. Each Sectional team will be “host” to one international resident.

THERE ARE ALSO A FEW NEW RULES, TO MIX THINGS UP A BIT IN 2014: • Five, instead of four residents will be permitted to participate at the

podium this year.• Each team will be asked to wear t-shirts this year. Other items to show

team spirit are encouraged – cow bells are still permitted!• Team names are required this year. The team with the best urological

name, as judged by an online poll, will receive an additional stipend of $50.

All residents who participate on the Section Bowl team will receive a $500 travel stipend, and the winning team will receive an additional $200 stipend.

NEWEST GRADUATES OF THE AUA LEADERSHIP PROGRAM CONGRATULATIONS TO DR. JODI MARANCHIE, OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH, AND WASSIM KASSOUF, OF MCGILL UNIVERSITY, WHO COM-PLETED THE AUA’S PRESTIGIOUS LEADERSHIP PROGRAM IN MAY 2013.In 2004, the AUA and its Sections launched the AUA Leadership Program to identify urologists who have demonstrated effective leadership skills within organized medicine or the community. This program seeks applicants who are driven to tackle future roles of responsibility within the AUA. This is a call for younger AUA members to polish their leadership skills, take advantage of networking opportunities and become better acquainted with AUA programs and services. To date, 87 AUA members have participated in one of five different Leadership Program classes.

Every two years, there is a selection process for the next incoming class of program participants. To qualify, candidates must be American Board of Urology (ABU) (or equivalent) certified urologists, fewer than 15 years out of training, and have demonstrated leadership skills. The candidate must have an interest in developing these skills to serve their Sections and the AUA as future volunteer leaders. They must also be Active members of the AUA and the AUA Section where they live and practice.

JODI MARANCHIE, MD

I cannot speak highly enough of the AUA Leadership Program, which I completed last year as part of the fifth class since its institution in 2004. The program kicked off in July with a weekend at AUA headquarters in Maryland. We were led through a series of exercises on leadership skills and style. We were then introduced to each AUA department and presented with its mission and barriers. At the end of the weekend we were divided into small groups to tackle a specific challenge facing our specialty. Our team proposed a model incorporating quality metrics into physician reimbursement. Under the mentorship of Larry Ross, President Emeritus of the AUA, we developed our model over 6 months, ultimately presenting it to the AUA Board. In March we participated in the Joint Advocacy Conference for an inside view of AUA political efforts, advocacy and a day on Capitol Hill. The entire process was an amazing learning experience, which bonded strong friendships and confirmed my desire to contribute nationally to the future of our specialty. I am sincerely grateful to the Northeastern Section for this outstanding opportunity.

14 WINTER 2014

Through the generous sponsorship provided by the Northeastern Section of the AUA, Dr. Anne Dudley traveled to Kumasi, Ghana with mentor Dr. Francis Schneck to conduct a pediatric urology workshop. Reporting on her experience, Dr. Dudley stated:

“Our operative days presented endless learning opportunities from our patients and fellow Ghanaian surgeons. Our colleagues discussed the challenges they faced at their respective hospitals, such as a lack of small suture or needles and their operative techniques for optimizing patient care with available materials. I learned how to create a makeshift suction drain from tubing and syringes with tape or ‘plaster.”“The pediatric patients were by far the stars of our trip. They were energetic and brave, enduring difficult surgeries with their families by their sides. The pediatric wing was a lively place, with a sense of community among the families and patients. The wide variety of conditions we encountered was a learning experience unparalleled by any other. My own experience with bladder exstrophy prior to our trip was limited to postoperative patients and textbooks, and while in Ghana, under Dr. Schneck’s guidance, two patients underwent a complex closure.”

“At times, it was somewhat hectic, but organized colleagues and volunteers helped our group treat as many patients each day as was feasible. I am thankful for the chance to participate in an IVUmed trip while in residency, for without the generous support of sponsors and grants I would have not been able to play a part in such a mission. I hope to use my skills in the future to participate in other IVUmed trips and continue the teaching mission of this organization.”
