Dear friends,You all know the feeling – the closets and cupboards are bursting at the seams. Those things you bought that didn’t work out quite the way you had hoped.Maybe you have just accumulated “stuff” over the years that you just couldn’t bearto turn down.

A recent article in the WSJ featured a book by a Japanese author encouraging usto only keep things that bring us joy. As we evaluate our treasures, we need tobe honest with ourselves and try to determine if it really is an item that our children or grandchildren are going to cherish. Include them in the process as youshare the story of a piece. Let them help you decide the best home for an item. Ifthere isn’t an appropriate home in the family, maybe it is time to consider letting someone else enjoy your unneeded items. Joe Piane is at the Center each month to help you decideif a piece deserves special attention.

Simplifying will help you benefit by feeling a sense of pride and accomplishment as you face an organized drawer, cupboard, closet or room. You will also benefit by making your home a safer place. Clearing out the clutter will also helpdecrease the chance of tripping over random items in your home and will decrease your frustration and stress as you areable to find what you need.

Each April and October, the NSC accepts donations from the entire community. Details for the event can be found onpage 12.

The flea markets are a major source of revenue for the Center. We welcome your donations throughout the month. We also have opportunities for volunteers especially during the week of the sale as we setup and staff for the event. Some volunteers are able to give an hour or two but some of our volunteers work for the entire event. We are verygrateful for any help that you can give. If you are not able to help at the Center, consider baking an item for our amazingbaked sale table.

Thanks for your help as we try to have another record settingsale.

Happy spring!

Please contact katie rivera at 737-2336 x19 [email protected] for more information about the flea market.

Tips for Staying IndependentSenior drivers are at a higher risk of having a seriouscollision more than any other age group except forthose under age 25. Drivers age 85 and older areinjured or killed in crashes at a higher rate than anyother age group—due primarily to increased fragilitythat comes with age.Tips for Safer Senior Driving• Increase your following distance. You should allowa greater distance between you and the vehicleahead of you, so you’ll have more time to react.• Minimize left turns. Senior drivers age 65 andolder are involved in more crashes making left-handturns. If possible, make three right turns to avoidmaking a left. Or try to use intersections with designated left-hand turn lanes. • Eliminate distractions inside the vehicle. Adjustingradio volume, using a cell phone and interactingwith passengers can be major distractions. Planyour route before you get behind the wheel.• Try to steer clear of busy highways and congestedtraffic. Don’t hesitate to use local roads instead ofhighways. Also try to avoid rush hour traffic or highly congested areas. More vehicles on the roadcan mean a greater likelihood of a collision. • Senior drivers should also consider using publictransportation if it’s available to you.• Review your medications with your doctor orpharmacist. Senior drivers should remember thatprescription and over-the-counter medications canslow reflexes, blur vision and cause drowsiness ordizziness, causing additional driver distractions. Ifyou have serious muscle or joint impairments, askyour doctor about anti-inflammatory drugs that canhelp permit safe driving.• Stay awake and alert. Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving and distracted driving.Be sure to get enough sleep before taking a ride andtake frequent breaks along the way if needed.• Take a Defensive Driving Refresher course on regular basics. It can help you keep your skills fresh. • For more information on senior driving go tohttp://seniordriving.aaa.comThese tips and many more could help you maintainyour mobile independence, quality of life and safety.free MeDICAL IDS by Jim belton, new york LiferepresentativeApril 8th and May 5th9:00am - noon

WHy SHouLD I Pre-regISTer? - Often, in thenewsletter, you will be asked to register at theReception Desk. It is important that you do so forseveral reasons.1. We sometimes cancel a class/trip due to low registration. If you are interested and do not signup, you might miss out on a class/trip that you areinterested in.2. If a class is cancelled and you are not registered,we can’t call you to notify you of the cancellation. Then you come to the Center and are disappointedthat you have made the trip for a cancelled class. 3. Instructors will often ask us for a number of registrations. This helps them to prepare for theclass and make the appropriate number of handouts.4. Room assignments might be able to be adjusted toaccommodate a smaller or larger group, but this toodepends on the number of registrations. ~Thank you!

Community News FITNESS CENTER CORNERThis month the fitness center is focusing onstress and ways to lower it. Here are some tipsto decrease stress:

• Take a breath! Deep breaths will allow for well-oxygenated blood to circulate throughoutthe body, which will work to lower your heartrate. To breathe deeply, begin by putting yourhand on your abdomen just below the navel.Inhale slowly through your nose and watch yourhand move out as your belly expands. Hold thebreath for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly. Repeat several times.

• Compose a mantra. Devise an affirmation - ashort, clear, positive statement that focuses onyour coping abilities. “I feel calm. I can handlethis.”

• Do something enjoyable. Pick your favoritething to do (read, listen to music, start a project, take a short nap, etc.) Something that will distract you even if it’s just for 15 minutes.

• Exercise! Exercise is known for its mentalhealth benefits. Exercise releases endorphins, which create feelings of happiness and euphoria.Even if it is just a short walk outside, it will beworth it!~ Contributed by Marci Mantegna, fitness Center SiteManager, Cardiokinetics

HeALTHfuL LIfeSTyLe TIPS for oLDer ADuLTSSpring is here! Start fresh with healthful food choices. According to the USDA, each day adults 51years and older should aim for:• 5-6 oz grains • 1 ½ - 2 c. fruit• 2- 2 ½ c. vegetables • 5-5 ½ oz pro• 3 c. dairyIf you are very active, you may need more servingsdaily. But how much is a serving size? An example ofone serving from each of the food groups would be:1 slice of bread, 1 small apple, 1 cup of raw orcooked vegetables, 1 Tbsp of peanut butter, or onecup of milk. Try different fruits and vegetables tomake sure you are getting a wide range of vitaminsand minerals. Whole grains are a good source offiber and B vitamins- top whole grain bread withpeanut butter and a sliced banana for breakfast! Aimfor lean protein, such as chicken or beans, and lowfat or skim dairy products. Lastly, look for hearthealthy oils such as canola and extra virgin olive oil.

Exercise is also an important part of a healthful diet.Strive for 150 minutes each week of any kind ofphysical activity, such as walking, bike riding, orswimming. Grab a friend or family member andexercise together!Sources and For More Information: USDA and National Instituteon Aging websites
