DCMS: Sea Change Margate has been awarded £3.7 million to help fund an ambitious project to rejuvenate the town’s Dreamland Amusement Park. This includes plans to restore a collection of historic amusement rides many of which are the last surviving examples of their type. The listed scenic railway and the oldest surviving rollercoaster in the UK will be restored and the Grade II listed Dreamland cinema will also be given a facelift. The People’s Millions: Margate Unit 235 Of The Sea Cadet Corps’ Training and Safety Boat project
This project received the bonus grant - highest runner up award in the recent voting awards.
The project will provide a safety boat to facilitate the training of cadets in Margate. Participants will learn more about sailing, power boating, sea safety and life saving skills. Sessions will be led by qualified instructors and volunteers. The vessel will be utilised in the event of sea emergencies and inland flooding and will also be available to local sea scouts, sailing clubs and schools.

StreetSmart annually awards grant funding to organisations that help homeless adults and children and focus on: • mental and physical health • employability; and • sustained independent living Grants of between £500 and £15,000 are available to charitable organisations involved in progressive projects aimed at helping the homeless make a better life for themselves. Most social enterprises have increased turnover during recession
More than half of social enterprises have seen their turnovers grow during the recession, according to a survey by the Social Enterprise Coalition. Its report, The State of Social Enterprise said that 56% of 962 organisations in the poll had increased their turnovers. Only 20% had seen them fall. The report pointed out that the Small Business Barometer 2009 showed that, by contrast, 43% of private sector businesses of a similar size had seen their turnovers drop, and only 20% had seen them rise. The survey also indicated that the social enterprise sector was growing: a third of all organisations in the poll sample had been set up in the past four years. Further information:

“The Return of the Kent and Medway Funding Fair”
2010 will see the return of the popular Kent and Medway Funding Fair. This has been made possible through funding from the Big Lottery BASIS Programme which is operated through Kent CAN and delivered by Action with Communities in Rural Kent. In order to address the county’s varied funding needs and allow more organisations to access the event there will be two fairs run in two locations covering the West and East of the County. The West Kent Fair is planned for the end of March and the East Kent Fair will follow at the end of May. Booking will open in January, but spaces are limited so to ensure that you do not miss the opportunity to attend, you can register your interest by emailing [email protected]. DECC Bio-Energy Infrastructure Grants
This £1.5m Department of Energy and Climate Change scheme seeks to support the biomass industry by helping projects aimed at increasing the use of biomass fuel in heat and electricity generation. Eligible projects include those involving: Short rotation coppice (willow, poplar, alder, ash, hazel, lime, silver birch, sweet chestnut and sycamore), miscanthus, switch grass, reed canary grass, prairie cord grass, rye grass, straw, wood fuel from forestry, arboricultural tree management and primary processing and other energy crops at DECC’s discretion.
Ineligible projects include those involving: Wood arising from secondary processing and any wood that has been chemically treated or painted, oilseed rape to be used to produce heat and electricity, biomass for processing into transport fuels or animal waste products (e.g. poultry litter, sewage etc). The Charity Commission has published a new guide to good practice for the 30,000 faith-based organisations in the third sector. This new guidance includes legal information, recommended good practice and practical case studies. It is particularly targeted at smaller and new organisations that operate places of worship. Winter Celebration Grant 2009
Age Concern and Help the Aged are offering Winter Celebration Grants. The Creme of Nature Community Award supports African Caribbean voluntary, faith and community groups that aim to support and encourage women. Skills for the Future
This scheme will fund projects providing paid training placements to meet a skills gap in the heritage sector, and fully support trainees to learn practical skills. The programme aims to: • Support high-quality, work-based heritage skills training opportunities • Heritage skills also include those required to deliver education, community participation or
volunteering programmes, or to use new media and technology to open up heritage • Enhance the capacity of the heritage sector to deliver training and share good practice • Demonstrate the value of heritage skills to modern life

Youth Music Open Programme
The Youth Music Open Programme is available for organisations wishing to apply for grants of £5,000 to £30,000 for music projects for young people up to age 18 or the age of 25 when they are: in detention, have special educational needs or have disabilities. It targets nearly £2m of Youth Music’s funding towards projects that support their goals of: • Early Years – advancing the learning and development of all children in their early years (0-5) by
aiming to ensure universal access to high quality music making in England • Challenging Circumstances – Improving the life chances of children and young people in the most
challenging circumstances by supporting them to achieve their full potential through engagement and progression in music making
• Encouraging Talent and Potential – Realising the musical talent and potential of children and young people by ensuring opportunity for all to develop their talent regardless of background

Youth Sector Development Fund This £10m bidding round aims to raise the aspirations of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. This round will focus on supporting the aims of the Government’s Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) Strategy. Bids should demonstrate how young people would be imaginatively shown the full range of options open to them in education and work, such as through “taster sessions” at universities or real experience of different careers. Media Trust: Inspiring Voices
The Media Trust has grants of up to £500 available (one a week until March 2010) for digital media projects which help empower disadvantaged communities. Plus projects selected will be showcased on their website, receive a bursary for a place at one of their training event and additional communications support. Final deadline will be March 2010. Friends Provident Foundation
The main theme of the Foundation’s grant giving is financial inclusion around banking, savings, credit, and debt advice. The Foundation wishes to fund work that will make a strategic contribution to its goals and will not fund work that only delivers financial inclusion services. Although they have six outcomes, only four are open for bidding: Universal banking access; Sustainable approaches to funding debt advice ; Increasing savings; Clarification of the role of affordable credit in building greater financial inclusion. Grants may be made for capital or revenue funding, core funds or project costs. A timetable of deadlines for 2010 is expected shortly. Biffaward Flagship Programme This scheme can support new and exciting projects of regional or national importance that will improve biodiversity or cultural facilities. This scheme no longer provides funding for community buildings. Projects must be site-based, within 25 miles of a Biffa operation and ten miles of an active landfill. Grants can range from £150,000 - £500,000. Applicants must be eligible to enrol with ENTRUST as an Environmental Body (EB). An EB is a non-profit making organisation, which must be independent of local authorities or landfill operator control and must be enrolled by ENTRUST. EB's can be a corporate body, a trust, a partnership or an unincorporated body. Call for applications in March 2010 with a submission deadline possibly in July 2010. Further information:

Comic Relief - Older People's Programme
This scheme aims to support people aged 65 and older to bring positive change to their communities. Comic Relief have a specific interest in proposals focusing on the: development of social enterprises; forums for older people; local community activities; and campaigning. Projects should address the needs of groups: Black and minority ethnic elders; frail older people; older people with mental health needs; older carers; and those on lower incomes. Grants range between £15,000-£40,000 are available for projects of up to three years. Applicants must be able to demonstrate the active engagement of older people in the development and delivery of the work. The deadline for bids is 11 January 2010. Gatwick Airport Community Trust
GACT is now open for application. The benefit from the projects must fall wholly or largely with the Trust’s area (those areas most directly affected by the airport operations. Eligible areas in Kent are around Tunbridge Wells, Southborough and Edenbridge; detailed maps can be found on the Trust website. The minimum grant is £250; most grants are between £1000-£5,000. Occasional larger grants may be considered if the impact is targeted to benefit a significant number of people and is considered to make a valuable and noticeable difference longer term. The circumstances in which such grants are made are likely to be few and far between and applicants are advised to seek advice from the Trust BEFORE applying for a larger grant. The programme aims to fund project under the following categories:
• Development of young people • Art projects including amateur drama, music, art • Sporting facilities • Environmental improvement and conservation • Improvements to community facilities such as village halls • Support for the disabled • Support for the elderly • Encouragement of additional volunteering or giving in the area
