U13 Schools and State Comps Under New BannerThis year, NSWFA will be presenting U13 schools and U13 state competitions under a new banner - the School/State Mini Series. The aim of the Mini Series is to encourage more U13/U11/U9 school fencers to participate in state competitions.

Both schools and state competitions will continue to be run as they are now. The difference is that they will be streamlined in the fencing calendar to run as a series from early May to late November, providing more competition opportunities for school-age fencers.

The incentive for more schools fencers to move across into state competitions is the opportunity to improve their fencing in a more challenging competition, enter more events, earn more ranking points and have a better chance of being selected to represent NSW in the Friendship Cup later in the year.

Participation by school fencers in state competitions will remain voluntary. The state competitions held on Sundays will not be conducted as schools competitions so there will be no additional demands placed on school teachers and coaches.

The Mini Series will culminate in the Koala Challenge/Friendship Cup weekend in November.

The Mini Series is open to U13 fencers who have registered with NSWFA as Junior Registered ($40). The entry fee for each competition is $25.

Entries for the Saturday schools competitions are to be made in the usual way by schools a week before the competition. Entries by individual students who don’t have fencing at their school should also be received a week prior.

Entries for Sunday state competitions are to be made, as usual, by 6pm on the Thursday preceding the competition via the online entry service at www.nswfencing.org.au

The ABC Series for schools beginners that was successfully launched last year will be continued this year.

Please see the website calendar for the Mini Series competition timetable.

Club affiliation dueClubs are reminded that their affiliation with NSWFA is due. Please download the form at

www.nswfencing.org.au/docs/NSWFAClubAffiliation.docx

and remit $100 to NSWFA either by cheque or EFT. Affiliation en-sures that clubs are able to access the national insurance policy arranged by the AFF.

NSWFA to host Uni Games FencingThe annual Australian UniGames (AUG) will be held in Sydney 28 September - 3 October with fencing events to be held at Marrickville. NSWFA will provide equipment, officials and volunteers to ensure the success of the Games.

Behaviour at fencing competitionsIt is necessary to remind parents, coaches and other spectators that they must not interfere with the conduct of a bout. In particular, they must not put any pressure on the referee.

At NSWFA competitions, the FIE Rules apply including:

“t.82.3. a) Everybody taking part in or present at a fencing competition must remain orderly and must not disturb the smooth running of the competition. During bouts no one is allowed to go near the pistes, to give advice to the fencers, to criticise the Referee or the judges, to insult them or to attempt to influence them

in any way. Even the team captain must remain in the space assigned to him and he may only intervene in the situations and in the manner provided for in Article t.90 of the Rules. The Ref-eree must stop immediately any activity which disturbs the smooth running of the bout which he is refereeing (cf. t.96.1–3).

b) Any person who, for any reason, threatens or insults an official commits an offence of the 4th group and is penalised according to article t.119” (black card - immediate expulsion from the venue)

In addition to the FIE Rules, the NSWFA Code of Conduct requires all participants at competitions to uphold appropriate standards of sportsmanship.

Breaches of the Code can result in suspension or expulsion from membership of the Association. The Code can be found here: www.nswfencing.org.au/admin_policies.htm

The members of the Directoire Technique and members of the NSWFA Executive will strongly protect referees and take the appropriate action against anyone who criticises or attempts to influence a referee.

All participants in NSW fencing events are urged to visit the Play By The Rules website: www.playbytherules.net.au where lots of good advice on behaviour at sporting competitions can be found.

Media Officer Appointed Meet Laura Goodin who has been appointed Media Officer for NSW Fencing.

Laura (from Bulli Swords Club) has taken on the responsibility of promoting fencing in all forms of media. She is well suited to the task, having previously han-dled media relations for the NSW State Emergency Service.

She’ll work with the Executive and with Clubs to develop me-dia so more people in the community know more about fencing. She’ll be developing a Media Kit which Clubs will find useful in promoting fencing in your local media.

A new Media Policy, developed by Laura in consultation with the NSWFA Executive is on the website.

Laura can be contacted at [email protected]
