In this technical note you will find a new procedure for the removal-refitting of auto-
matic transmission AD8 with the Z7X engine.
The removal-refitting procedure described in this technical note supersedes that descri-
bed in MR 302 part number 77 11 093 170.
The new Safrane is fitted with the latest generation computer with 55-way connec-
tions and has a PARK recognition switch integral with the automatic transmission
control unit (passenger compartment end).
The control cable adjustment section is common to phase 1 and 2 (see section 37).

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Use 23DRIVING
The automat ic transm ission is lubr icated u nd er
pressu re, it is therefore only lubricated if the en-
gine is run ning.
Consequen tly, in order to avoid serious da mage, it
is essential to observe the following recommen da-
tions:
• never move with the ignition switched off (on a
descent for examp le), we cannot stress enough
how dangerous this is.
• never pu sh the vehicle (e.g. to reach a p etrol
pu mp , unless the precautions in the "Towing"
paragraph are taken).
Also, the veh icle is only driven if the engine is ru n-
ning. It is therefore imp ossible to start the engine
of an autom atic vehicle by pu shing it.
TOWING
It is always p referable to tow the veh icle on a flat-
bed trailer or with the front w heels raised.
How ever, if this is not possible, the vehicle may , in
exceptional circum stances, be towed at a sp eed of less than 40 km/h (25 m.p.h.) over a distance not
exceeding 50 km (30 miles) (lever in position "N")
TOWING LOAD (towing a caravan, boat, etc.)
The load towed must be less than or equal to
750 kg.
If this maximu m load is exceeded , the maximum
oil temp erature w ill be exceeded on a 7% gra-
dient, followed by a fall in oil pressure and thu s
rapid deterioration of the engine.

DRAIN
Final drive
The final d rive is not to be d rained , it is filled for
the length of its service life.
However, should draining be necessary, remove
plug (A).
Mechanism
The mechanism is drained by removing plug (B)
wh ich h as a triangular imprint (B. Vi. 1213).
Plug (D ) is a top-up plu g (squa re imprint).

FILLING
Final drive
Filling and topp ing up is carried out following the
removal of plug (C) and by injecting 1.5 litres of
oil into the final drive.
The oil level cannot be topped up by over-flow as
the filler hole d oes not r eflect the ideal final d rive
oil level.
95622R
To fill and top up the level of oil, use either:
- a pn eumatic oil distributor w hich ind icates the
quantity of oil sup plied,
- a graduated test tube and a syringe.
An incorrect level of oil may resul t in:- deterioration o f the lip seals,
- an oil leak via the breather.
Mechanism
Filling is carried out after rem oval of plug (E).

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
Drain - Fill - Levels 23Use a fun nel with a 15/100 filter in order to
prevent the entry of impurities.
The level MUST be checked following th e
procedure described below:
Before checking the oil level:
• if the automatic transmission has been
dr ained, fill with 4 li tres of oil,
• if it is just a simple check, 0.5 li tre of
recommend ed oil mu st be add ed.
1. With the v ehicle on a 4 post lift, transm ission
at ambient temperature.
2. Start th e engine, control lever in "park".
3. Connect the XR25, enter:
D 1 then # 0 44
4. Raise the vehicle and run the engine u ntil it
reaches a temperatu re of 60°C.
5. When the required temp erature has been
reached, with th e engine running, open the
top-up plug (D ) and allow the excess oil toflow out (this should be in excess of 0.1 li tre)
for app roximately 20 seconds . Refit the plug.
6. If the volu me of oil recovered is less than
0.1 li tre (≈ 1 glass), the level is not correct,
repeat the operation.
In this case, add 1 litre of recommended oil
again and allow the transm ission to cool in
order to repeat th e operations.
Fault indicator light
ELECTRONIC FAULT INDICATOR LIGHT MESSAGE
Operation with no fault:
• When the ignition is switched on, vehicle and
engine stopped , lever in position "P" or "N",
the ind icator light illum inates.
• When the starter is operated, the indicator
light remains illuminated.
• When the key is released, with the ignition on
and the engine run ning, it extinguishes
approximately 3 seconds after starting th e
engine.
If a fault is present:
• With the vehicle stationary with the engine
running or wh ile driving, the indicator light is
permanently illuminated.
• With the vehicle moving, illumination and
extingu ishing of the ind icator light with no
operation of the ignition key.
• With the vehicle moving, brief illumination of
the ind icator light.
Oil tempe rature< - 20°C or > + 140°C
• With the vehicle moving or stationary, with the
ind icator light flashing once per second
app roximately, in this case, reduce the
performance requirements by m oderate
acceleration.

Fault-finding - General 23Safrane
The Safrane B54M fitted with typ e AD 8 automatic transmission has the latest generation computer
(generation A4-2).
Fault-find ing for this fun ction u sing the XR25 is carried ou t u sing fiche N° 35.
The basic manu al for the interpr etation of bargrap hs and the pr ocessing of customer complaints is memo 97Diag 11 (or workshop manu alTA-A DIAG III). CHART 4 in th is technical note is specific to the Safrane an d
completes the custom er comp laints for the manual.
Special points in relation to Safranes fi tted w ith the generation A4-1 computer:
- The "load" information (throttle open ing) is sent ou t by th e injection comp uter (there is no longer a load
poten tiometer specific to the au tomatic transmission).
- A display on the instrument panel ind icates the position of the selector lever and th e automatic
transmission operating mode (sport / poor grip starting gear change mod e).
- An ad ditional switch at the base of the selector lever completes the mu lti-function switch information toidentify the park p osition (information n ecessary for the instrument p anel display).
- A "winter" pu sh-button on th e central console allows take off in 2nd gear if grip is p oor.
- The computer connections are monobloc with 55 tracks and the automatic transmission wiring is specific
(interm ediate connector on the pressu re sensor circuit, new compu ter position, ...)
Variations to be taken into account during fault-finding:
- Connection between the automatic transmission and injection compu ters:
. The load information is sent on track 41 of the injection comp uter connector.
. The engine speed information is sent on track 43 of the injection comp uter connector.
. The Park / Neutral / torque reduction information is received by the injection computer on track 7 of its
connector.
- The connection between the automatic transmission and the air cond itioning control compu ter is via
track 36 of the automatic transmiss ion comp uter and track B12 of the air conditioning control comp uter.
- Allocation of tracks on the "winter" button connector:
. Ea rth on tr ack A1.
. Signa l on t rack B5.
. + side lights on track A5 .
