Metal Bulletin Events is excited to announce our inaugural International Nickel Conference. The conference will take place in Toronto this year at the centre of the burgeoning Canadian mining industry and bringing together senior level executives from across the international supply chain to discuss the issues and opportunities facing the industry.Currently the nickel market is witnessing a period of transformation. With a decreasing number of sulphide projects being developed and a movement towards southern hemisphere lateritic deposits, producers face new challenges. In the coming years they will have to develop cost efficient technologies in order to remain competitive. Market fundamentals remain uncertain too – is oversupply looming as many predict or will new projects not deliver as much extra capacity as predicted? Asia continues to dominate but with the much discussed Indonesian nickel ore ban on the horizon what will be the real impact on its biggest consumer: China? And all these questions are against a consistent backdrop of extreme price volatility.
From the traditional bedrock of stainless steel demand to opportunities in new uses emerging from renewable technologies, 2013 will prove vital in forming the strategies which will allow producers and consumers of nickel to reach a clearer, less turbulent future. Whatever your position in the market the conference will provide a forum for insightful, informative debate and the contacts and networking opportunities to secure a solid footing in the year to come.
Reasons to attend• HEAR clarification on the nickel export ore ban
from Indonesian government ministers• UNDERSTAND the forecast for supply and
demand• NETWORK with senior level executives from
across the supply chain• DISCUSS the role of China and the
development of the NPI industry• ANALYSE nickel’s pricing performance and
predictions for the future• EXAMINE the growing use of nickel in non
stainless steel applications

• Status of the export ban with respect to nickel • Explanation of current laws and regulations
and reasons for new legislation • Will the ban actually come to fruition? • Is this a complete export ban? How will it
be enforced? • Will the development of value added products
end Indonesia’s reliance on China?

12:15 Growing concern in China: the impact the ban will have on Indonesia’s largest nickel customer
• How reliant is China on Indonesian nickel ore?
• Pressure on Chinese smelters – with huge overcapacity in NPI plants will many face profit loss?
• How much Chinese investment is being planned in Indonesia? When would this new capacity come online? Will it be in time to avoid shortages?
• In the event that the ban is implemented could nickel ore from the Philippines make up the shortfall?
• With huge stockpiling of nickel in 2012, is everyone overestimating how badly China will be hit?
Cui Min, Analyst, Beijing General Research Institute of Mining & Metallurgy, China
12:45 Networking lunch 14:15 Overview of the Chinese nickel market: new
capacity, utilisation and domestic demand • How much nickel does China require for
domestic consumption?

the Indonesian and Chinese markets in two to three years time?
• How will this impact overall global market dynamics and pricing?
• If the LME primary nickel price remains depressed in the coming years, can there be any future for NPI at all? What advantage could it hold?
• Tracking trends in pricing – the cost of NPI relative to the LME nickel price
• Will NPI production ever move out of China? Is there a market anywhere else for this quality of nickel?
