The LTC®4370 controls N-channel MOSFETs in series with each supply to act like diodes with a variable forward voltage. The forward voltage of the MOSFET is adjusted to offset the mismatch in input supply voltages until the currents from each supply are equal. This provides a simple, supply agnostic, space-saving solution for current sharing between two supplies in high reliability systems. By also incorporating diode blocking behavior, the LTC4370 prevents one supply failure from bring-ing down the entire system.

Designing an Industrial Sensor for Proximity and Velocity Measurement
Designing a Portable Multi-Channel Data Acquisition Unit for Non-Destructive Testing
Many industrial processes involve the transport of material from one location to another. Often the proximity and/or velocity of material movement must be measured without actual contact. By using ultra-sonic sensors, these characteristics can be easily measured. An incident ultra-sonic beam is created and the reflected ‘echo’ from the moving object is carefully processed to determine the desired measurements. Ultra-sonic methods can also make accurate measurements independent of the target objects color or transparency- something laser-based systems find difficult.
Ultra-sonic sensors can be found in many conveyor systems where material is moved from place to place and the proximity and velocity of the material (boxes, baggage, components, etc.)
is critical to the control of the system. In many systems, sensors are positioned at critical points and the data is relayed to a central controller so that the performance of the various sections can be separately controlled. This simplifies the optimization of the overall system. The sensors must communicate frequently with the central controller using a standard industrial communications protocol.
This application note will summarize the device selection process for an Ultra-sonic sensor and will illustrate some key design considerations. The key devices needed in the design include an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) to measure the reflected ultra-sonic signal, an FPGA to process sensor data and communicate the results to the central controller, Point of Load (PoL) power
regulators for on-board power distribution and an AC/DC power supply to provide power to the board.
We will select the ADC from the wide variety of devices offered by Linear Technology, the FPGA from Lattice Semiconductor, the DC/DC uModule™ power regulators from LTC and the AC/DC supply from Emerson. The selection of specific devices will be based on the requirements of the example design and will help illustrate a common approach to device selection that can be used in a variety of designs.
Many industrial applications require portable instrumentation for sensing and measuring the outputs from high-speed analog sensors. In many cases, multi-channel instruments are used when improved resolution is required. For example, multiple sensor channels can be combined into an array to improve resolution and depth perception, providing a 3D-like image of the material structure. This can be done in a non-destructive fashion when ultrasound or low energy lasers are used as the signal source.
A common example application for multi-channel data acquisition is in materials testing where the detection of material defects must be done without damaging or stressing the material. Testing pipes, boat hulls and other metal containers make access difficult so the tester must be able to ‘image’ into the material far enough to detect defects not visible from the surface. Other common techniques include x-rays and magnetics but these are typically confined to lab use only.
This application note will summarize the device selection process and a key design consideration for a multi-channel data acquisition unit like those used for non-destructive testing of metal containers for material defects, weld integrity and stress. The key devices needed in the design include an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) to measure the reflected signal, an FPGA to collect converted data via a high-speed LVDS interface and control the display, a regulator for on-board power distribution, a microcontroller to implement the system level functions and a display to show captured images.
We will select the ADC from the wide variety of devices offered by Linear Technology, the FPGA from Lattice Semiconductor, and the regulator from Linear Technology. The A4931 is a complete 3-phase brushless DC motor pre-
driver. The device is capable of driving a wide range of N-channel
power MOSFETs and can support motor supply voltages up to
30 V. Commutation logic is decoded internally and requires only
three Hall-element inputs spaced at 120° High side MOSFET
gate drive is provided by the on-chip charge pump. This topology
makes the A4931 ideal for driving 3 phase BLDC motors with
frame sizes of 36mm and smaller.
Other features include fixed off-time pulse width modulation
(PWM) current control for limiting inrush current, locked-rotor
protection with adjustable delay, thermal shutdown, overvoltage
monitor, and synchronous rectification. Internal synchronous
rectification reduces power dissipation by turning on the
appropriate MOSFETs during current decay, thus shorting the
body diode with the low RDS(on) MOSFET. Overvoltage protection
disables synchronous rectification when the recirculating motor current pumps the supply voltage beyond the overvoltage threshold during current
recirculation.
The A4931 features enable, direction, and brake inputs that can control current using either phase or enable chopping. Logic outputs FG1 and
FG2 can be used to accurately measure motor rotation. Output signals toggle state during Hall transitions, providing an accurate speed output to a
microcontroller or speed control circuit.
Operating temperature range is –20°C to 105°C. The A4931 is supplied in a 5 mm × 5 mm, 28-terminal QFN package with exposed thermal pad.
This small footprint package is lead (Pb) free with 100% matte tin leadframe plating.

Micron’s e-MMC embedded memory combines our high-quality, low-cost NAND Flash memory with
a high-speed MultiMediaCard (MMC) controller in a low-profile FBGA package. This single-
package solution provides internal NAND management, including error correction
code (ECC), wear leveling, and bad block management. The high-
performance controller also performs several low-level tasks usually
done by the processor. Handling errors and low-level tasks internally
takes the burden off the host and increases speed, providing higher
system performance. This fully internal management also makes NAND
technology transitions invisible to the host and provides customers with the
ability to reduce their time-to-market and to sustain products longer and more easily.
e-MMC embedded memory comes in a small FBGA package. It also provides a standard JEDEC interface, simplifying both hardware and software integration. It’s

LT4275 - LTPoE++/PoE+/PoE PD ControllerHigh Efficiency PoE++™ PD Controllers Provide up to 90W Delivered Power
The LT®4275 is a pin-for-pin compatible family of IEEE 802.3 and LTPoE++ powered device (PD) controllers.
The LT4275A employs a proprietary LTPoE++ classification scheme, delivering 38.7W, 52.7W, 70W or 90W of power at the PD RJ45 connector. The LT4275A is fully compatible with IEEE 802.3. The LT4275B is an IEEE 802.3at compliant, Type 2 (PoE+) PD delivering up to 25.5W. The LT4275C is an IEEE 802.3af compliant, Type 1 (PoE) PD delivering up to 13W.
The LT4275 internal charge pump provides an N-channel MOSFET solution, eliminating a larger and more costly P-channel MOSFET. A low RDS(ON) MOSFET also maximizes power delivery and efficiency, reduces power and heat dissipation, and eases thermal design. Startup inrush current is adjustable with an external capacitor. The LT4275 also includes a power good output, on-board signature resistor, undervoltage lockout, and thermal protection. The LT4275A/LT4275B drives a single opto-coupler to indicate the power level of the attached PSE. Pin-selectable support for non-standard low voltage operation is provided. Auxiliary power override is supported with the AUX pin.
The LT4275A can be configured to support all possible LTPoE++, 802.3at and 802.3af power levels with external component changes.

LTM4620 – Single 26A or Dual 13A µModule Regulator Scalable to 100A with four LTM®4620 µModule® Regulators
The LTM4620 is a complete dual 13A output switching mode DC/DC power supply. Included in the package are the switching controller, power FETs, inductors, and all supporting components. Operating from an input voltage range of 4.5V to 16V, the LTM4620 supports two outputs each with an output voltage range of 0.6V to 2.5V, set by a single external resistor. Its high efficiency design delivers up to 13A continuous current for each output. Only a few input and output capacitors are needed.
The device supports frequency synchronization, multiphase operation, Burst Mode operation and output voltage tracking for supply rail sequencing and has an onboard temperature diode for device temperature monitoring. High switching frequency and a current mode architecture enable a very fast transient response to line and load changes without sacrificing stability.
Fault protection features include overvoltage and overcurrent protection. The power module is offered in a proprietary space saving and thermally enhanced 15mm x 15mm x 4.41mm LGA package with integrated top-side heat sink. The LTM4620 is RoHS compliant with a PB-free finish.

MIC2033/39 – High-Side MOSFET Power DistributionIncreased System Reliability
Micrel’s MIC2033/39 are high-side MOSFET power distribution switches providing increased system reliability utilizing 5 percent current limit accuracy. The MIC2033 has an operating input voltage range from 2.5V to 5.5V, is internally current limited and has thermal shutdown to protect the device and system. The MIC2033/39 are offered with either active-high or active-low logic level enable input controls, has an open drain fault status output flag with a built-in 32ms delay that asserts low during over current or thermal shutdown conditions.
The devices are available in several different fixed current limit options: 0.5A, 0.8A, 1A, and 1.2A. A capacitor adjustable soft-start circuit minimizes inrush current in applications where high capacitive loads are used.
Ideal for USB and USB peripherals, notebooks and consumer electronics, general purpose power distribution and DVDs and STBs, the device is offered in both 6-pin SOT-23 and 6-pin 2mm x 2mm thin DFN packages. The MIC2033 has an operating junction temperature range of -40°C to +125 °C.

Wide range of PFC control IC that deliver high power conversion efficiency at virtually all load levels. The R2A20114 (continuous conduction mode, interleaved) for high-output power supplies (1 kW to several kW) and the R2A20132SP IC (critical conduction mode, interleaved) for medium-output power supplies (200 W to 2 kW) are now used in a large number of PCs and servers.
A PFC (power factor correction) IC suppresses the peak power level by using harmonic control to use power efficiently, thus achieving energy savings. However, since the factors valued by customers' end products (efficiency, low spurious radiation, protective functions against malfunction, cost reduction through fewer parts) and the balance of these factors or power supply requirements differ, PFC ICs of a variety of specifications are needed.
PFC function can be achieved in 2 ways:
Passive PFC: Uses passive components to compensate for reactive energy loss: Not very efficient
