Dear Colleagues,
During past few years, we have made significant and serious
efforts for expediting the development of new drug
formulations, radioprotectors, molecular imaging agents and
other products, processes, technologies for Radiation
Countermeasures as well as for Medical Imaging and
Neurocognition Research for Armed Forces.
This cannot be denied that INMAS has today emerged as a
premier institute of our country that is working in the areas of
biological radioprotection and management of CBRN
emergencies. Additionally, we have developed a multitude of low cost, efficacious biomedical products and drugs for
LIC, NBC and high altitude conditions. Our institute has also become a centre of excellence for training in CBRN
emergencies, as well as advanced training in non-invasive imaging. We presently have an enviable fleet of highly
sophisticated, state of the art facilities such as the 3T human MRI, 7T animal MRI, human and animal PET/CT and SPECT
systems, Central Animal Laboratory Facility, Blast wave simulation facility, Co-60 Gamma Irradiators, Non-contact
Laser MicroDissection Workstation to name a few. This excellent infrastructure, operated by highly trained
manpower has successfully fostered major contributions in research with several publications in high impact factor
journals to our credit. Our scientists have been invited to several high level seminars, conferences, committees and
forums at the national and international level.
We have made significant scientific contributions during the XI Plan. This fact was also dearly appreciated by the most
recent Executive Board members who have reviewed our overall performance in the XI-Plan. I have good reasons to
rejoice the quality and quantum of work that we have accomplished during the XI-Plan Programme of Institute.
Besides bringing some new drug formulations on the shelf for Emergency use, we could make major headway into
many of the R&D challenges that INMAS faces along with its global counterparts. It is also important to note that we
made excellent progress in establishing modern laboratory infrastructure and some major facilities despite some
genuine constraints. We should also not ignore the fact that INMAS has been able to generate some novel scientific
concepts and ideas at the global level, which have caught significant attention of scientific community abroad.
The successful culmination of XI Five Year Plan brings forth new avenues of frontier, cutting-edge research that must
see the light of day in the form of novel innovative products during the ensuing XII-Plan. While I take this opportunity
to congratulate you all on our scientific accomplishments, I wish to urge you to attain even greater heights by working
in a cohesive, committed and dedicated manner for the benefit of our esteemed Armed Forces and our country at
large. This will surely help us in overcoming our limitations and bringing far better achievements during the XII Plan.
NEW PRODUCTS/TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPED

18 FET (fluroethyltyrosine)
Reflecting the increased amino acid transport capacity
of tumor cells, F-18 (F-18 FET) is actively taken up in
tumor cells via amino acid transport system L, but is
neither incorporated into proteins nor readily
degraded, resulting in high intracellular concentrations
of this imaging agent. O-(2-(18)F-fluoroethyl)-L-
tyrosine (FET) is a useful tracer in brain tumor imaging
based solely on amino acid transport that
differentiates local recurrent brain metastasis from
radiation necrosis. [18F]- FET-PET based diagnosis has
a relevant clinical impact for treatment planning and
response monitoring of radiation therapy in malignant
glioma. FET is fully characterized and validated in house
in >5 Patients with clinically significant results.

High Fidelity Human Patient Simulation System facility installed for imparting specialized medical training skills to
responder for mitigating CBRN hazards. It can provide simulation based training which will largely serve to ensure the
safety & optimal care of the patients resulting in reduced loss of life and limb, as a result of CBRN disasters.
Various psychometric tests has been developed worldwide for the assessment of cognitive abilities such as memory
span, attention span, visuospatial abilities, executive functions, mathematical abilities. There is also a need to address
issue of appropriate assessment of defence personnel's cognition. They face real life threatening challenges; it could
be on high altitude, desert and semiarid area or border security. Soldiers need to be attentive for every situation. To
prepare soldier ready for this situation, they are required to be assessed under real type situations, which is of heavy
monetary and hard to create. Simulation of those environments is now appropriate solution to provide this type of
simulation.
INMAS have designed these environments for cognitive assessment of soldiers in simulating situations. These
environments in virtual reality computer simulation are inspired from classical psychometric tests, and composed of
these tests in virtual reality 4D. Three types of VR environments are designed within-house capabilities. These are as
follows :
It is a simulation of office environment to assess various cognitive assets required to execute in any
R&D lab. Visual and auditory memory along with executive functions such as planning can be assessed with
inbuilt tasks. Visual and auditory attention tasks are also incorporated so as these functions also required
during lab/office activities.
Shopping mall in virtual reality is designed with the need of management skills, whether related to
money management or time management. Both of the modules can be well assessed in VR mall environment.
The Search and Rescue Operation is a virtual environment designed for the training purpose of military soldiers. The Search and Rescue Operation is studying the behavior of the soldiers in the traumatic events such as bomb explosion, gun firing and civilian management during low intensity conflicts and is important to help them train for disastrous situations.
The motivation behind the usage of VR for cognitive purposes includes two things: first thing is the ease of using VR

application for examining cognitive states for some cases that a difficult to handle in real world environments and the second one is the new perspectives that the results of cognition experiments bring into the advancements in developments of VR technology.

He pioneered the molecular biology work in clinically relevant human stem-cell response research (hSC-RR) first time in India. His team work on the identification of hBCL-2 active-site structurally is well recognized. It has assisted in the generation of hBCL-2 molecule with increased shelf-life and cell survival, and design of anti-cancer molecules. The elucidation of negative-control of human Stem Cell Factor receptor (c-Kit/tyrosine-kinase) by SHP1 and signal cluster on its activation helped the development of a molecule inducing proliferation of hSCs. The mapping of hSC transcription-factor (hPU.1) binding to GATA-1 (Erythroid-factor) causing negative regulation, has led to the development of a molecule promoting hSC graft to myeloid-lineage. Similarly, his work has also contributed to elucidation of signaling domain in hCD34-antigen (a hSC marker) and in hCXCR4 that enhances stem-cell trans-endothelial migration. His efforts to decipher Osterix, APC, Lithium/Wnt mechanisms in osteogenesis have established the usefulness of Lithium in clinical osteogeneic therapy. The identification of hypoimmune response gene clusters in hMSCs has helped to manipulate their clinical potential in transplantation. The microencapsulation/Nanoparticle Technology for human stem cell encapsulation developed by him, by Liposomes, Poly-Electrolytes (PAH, PSS), Chitosan, Alginate, hound passively and actively target hSCs to BM in pre-clinical models that has a great potential in clinical application in transplantation. The in-vivo SC tracking by NMR (7-9Tesla) is another innovative development to his credit using iron nanoparticles. Apart from present R&D, he also has contributed during earlier days extensively in routine clinical diagnostic radio-pharmaceuticals services including human-Low Density Lipoprotein (hLDL)-receptor probe development having a clinical potential for inflammation and atherosclerotic lesion imaging. His work on establishing conditions for hMSCs cultivation in abundance is extensively cited. He aims to develop Stem Cell Therapy “to cure all disease processes” and “to restructure disaster injuries “through molecular reconstruction, and aims to clone regiment-specific soldiers to Indian Army in future (known as customized soldiers).
Dr Gurudutta is an active member of American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology(M-20204), American Society of Gene Therapy, American Society of Stem Cell Research and other professional academies (NASc, INA, INSC, IABSc, etc) and societies (Fellow of Indian chemical Society) in India and abroad.
