November 2017

The school year is flying by. It is hard to believe that we are heading into December and Winter

Break. It was an exciting and busy month at Nujoom-ul-Islam with field trips and in-school projects

for our enthusiastic and eager young learners. We have more interesting projects coming up in

December, so make sure to mark your calendars.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK

Watching the children enter Nujoom-ul-Islam with smiles and lining up for assembly, makes my mornings very delightful. Every day I experience these sparks in the children’s eyes which shows me their excitement and eagerness to learn something new every day.

As the weather is getting colder, please bundle up your children as you

send them to school. We wouldn’t want them to miss out on any of the

upcoming events if they fall sick.

This month we planned a donation drive for Mary’s Place Family Center in North Seattle. Some students mentioned how exciting it was to go shopping for new packs of socks, blankets and jackets to donate. Alhamdulillah, it was a thought provoking field trip for the children to see those less fortunate and how any kind of help goes a long way. I would like to thank all the parents for the generous donations and pray to Allah Subhan wa Ta’Allah to reward you immensely, Ameen.

We also had a visit by the Redmond Police at Nujoom-ul-Islam. We had two female officers and a male officer. The children were very thrilled to meet them and understand their importance in our community. The children learned about personal safety (as in wearing helmets, crossing roads) as well as when and how to make emergency calls as needed. They also got to get into the police car and look at the police motorbike which added to their excitement.

Mrs. Nasreen – Hifdh

Assalamualaikum Dear Parents,

Alhamdulillah, I can't be grateful enough to Allah s.w.t for giving me this opportunity to work with these wonderful bunch of kids who never cease to amaze me with their capabilities in learning Qur'an.

Grade 1 students are almost finishing their Juzz Amma memorization Alhamdulillah. Our target is to complete the Juzz

Amma memorization by the end of next month InshaAllah. Alhamdulillah, all Grade 1 students are now MashaAllah

comfortable in reading on their own and memorization as well. Although we work together as a group in class, I request

parents to continue working with their children and follow the plan in their log. Please make sure to sign the homework

daily after your child has finished working on the work assigned for the day.

Grade 2 Alhamdulillah are also working hard as always. I request parents of grade 2 as well, to follow and sign the log

regularly. We have very less time in class, so I would want the parents to help me by listening and reviewing previous

portions with their child. I will be assigning the 'listen at home' part in the log soon InshaAllah. This listening is very

crucial in your child's Hifdh as it will help them remember the older memorized portions well enough. Also,

as Wednesday is a short day we have started very brief Tajweed sessions and some Qur'an vocabulary, which I think

will help them in memorizing better InshaAllah. I request parents to listen to their child's reading and check if they are

reading with Tajweed, it will be just one rule to focus on every week InshaAllah.

JazaakAllah Khair again to all the parents for working hard with your children and making their efforts successful.

Mrs. Suraiya - Montessori

Assalamu Aliakum Parents,

Alhamdulillah, kids are coming to school with great

enthusiasm. It gives me great joy to see their

innocent faces every morning. Our Nujoom-Ul-

Islam Montessori classroom is a thoughtfully

prepared environment that supports a child’s

natural desire to learn. Children have been

spending time with their friends doing challenging

activities, MashAllah.

In the month of November, we have been focusing

on learning the 7 continents on Earth and more

specifically about the North American continent.

We discussed the countries, the kind of animals and

other interesting facts related to North America.

We will continue to guide and teach the children at

their own pace.

Jazakallahu Khairan, for all your support and putting

your trust in us.

Mrs. Hayat - Kindergarten

Language Arts: This month we finished the first concept

‘ENVIRONMENT’ by completing the last unit – Community.

The children had fun learning about the various roles and jobs

available in the community around them and to distinguish

between good and services, natural and human resources,

and rules and laws. They have been learning the

characteristics and importance of being a good citizen

through their final project titled – ‘I Can Make a Difference’.

Math: We studied the chapter Ordinal Numbers and Position

and learned that numbers and words can be used to describe

order and position. We also learned how to compare and

order numbers to 20.

Spelling:

• Reviewed short o,I and e words.

• Recognized the –op and –en word families.

• Reviewed short e,a and o words and practiced with

rhyming words.

• Learned how to spell plural forms of words.

• Learned how to spell words that end with ll.

Mrs. Saman – Grade 1

Our 1st grade students are in to exploring different

types of communities, this month. They learned that

we share this planet Earth with other living things like

plants and animals. They looked into different

habitats and analyzed the types of animals and plants

that exist in each habitat. They got familiar with

different life cycles of plants, animals and humans.

They were able to build understanding of how plants,

animals and humans depend on each other by

investigating different food chains. They researched

how human communities had grown larger and

affected these animal and plant habitats, which

caused some animals and plants to be endangered

and eventually extinct. To wrap up the whole concept

of “Community”, they chose a habitat and created an

amazing “Habitat in a Box” project.

This month we also started our second concept

“Measurement”. The first unit of this concept is

“Measuring Amounts”, where students measured

quantities by exploring sets of tens and place value.

They practiced measuring amounts and changes in

amounts by solving a variety of addition and

subtraction problems. Later on, they will also explore

how equal parts can be measured using fractions.

Miss Denise – Grade 2

In November we wrapped up concept 1, Environment, and

began concept 2, Change.

We are reading the chapter book "Morning Girl" and

learning about different voices in a piece of writing. It is an

enjoyable story told from the point of view of a brother

and sister of the ancient Taino tribe. The Taino people is

the tribe that Columbus first encountered when he landed

in The Bahamas over 500 years ago. We are learning what

life was like for ancient people of America, and learning

how things have changed from then to now. It is such an

interesting concept and the children are really enjoying

learning about Morning Girl and Star Boy's lives on the

beach 500 years ago. They are really identifying with the

characters.

In social studies we are learning about the change that

humans make on the environment, including development

and pollution. We are talking about recycling and how

humans can be more responsible in the choices that we

make. It is very encouraging to see the concern these

children have, and how they innately understand the

importance of caring for our planet.

Our trip to the Mary's Place homeless shelter this month

gave the children a chance to think about how other, less

fortunate, people live. We then wrote about our

experiences as an exercise in showing our unique voices in

our writing. Great job, second graders!
