Welcome
Welcome to the 1st edition of the Numballs Football
Social League, in which we ranked top European
football teams, and players according to their Social
Media audience. The aim of this document is to
summarise and rank the main sports subjects by their
social media audience.
At Numballs we see the need to gather all social data
that sport organizations and persons are generating in
the internet. As several distinct platforms are used for
competitions, teams and athletes to engage with sport
fans around the world we want to benchmark and
experiment with all this data.
Data on this document (and more) is tracked and
maintained by Numballs. We love to mix social data with
other kind of data, such as: revenue, attendance,
merchandising sells, tv audience … If you think we can
collaborate in any way please feel free to reach us at
[email protected] we will be glad to chat with you.
This report is inspired in Deloitte’s Football Money
League (thank you guys for these 16 editions)
How we did it
We have tracked social media profiles for
competitions, teams and players since 2012.
Our software daily collects the audience of these
subjects in the main social networks: Twitter and
Facebook.
Some features about our methodology:
- Top 20 European football clubs are ranked on
this report. Had we included national teams,
England and Germany would have ranked on
top 20.
- Just one account per team. If the team has
more than one account, we tracked the main
one.
- Data is recorded daily at 7 AM, UK (GMT).
- Data used on this study is the one we had
collected until January 1st 2013.

Social Audience vs Revenue
Social Audience 2012 (m) - Total Revenue 2012 (euros-m)
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, Spanish
football giants, are by far top teams on both
rankings: Numball’s social rank, which ranks
by social media audience, and Deloitte’s money
by revenue, and seems it will not change in the
closest future.
FC Barcelona is the first team on the social
ranking with a huge presence, 45.5 M fans, on
both main social networks, Twitter and
Facebook. Catalans reached his global
audience on a direct way. On the revenue
ranking FCB is on the 2nd place thanks to a
good performance on UEFA Champions League
over last years.
Real Madrid has been the first team by revenue
for 5 consecutive years. In the social ranking is
on the second position with 40.3 M fans. Both
leaders have a big worldwide community, and
several accounts for every each language. Note
we count 1 official account per team for this
study, if we had count more than one, distance
with the rest would be bigger.
Manchester United is on 3rd place in both
rankings. Alex Ferguson’s team has 29.6 fans
following them on Facebook. They are not on
Twitter, so it’s a big opportunity for the team to
grow up on social audience for next years.
The gap between the first three teams and the
closest cluster is big. In the next group, far from
the leaders, there are Chelsea FC, Arsenal FC,
AC Milan and Liverpool FC with a good relation
in social and revenue rankings.
Next big cluster has Bayern Munich,
Manchester City, Juventus FC, Tottenham and
Inter Milan. These teams ranked higher in
revenue than social, so we could name those
undersocial teams. Theses teams have a nice
growing potential in social media. Specially
Bayern Munich who is the fourth team by
revenue and only ninth on social.
Teams who are doing great on social media, but
they are not on top 20 teams by revenue, are in
the last cluster: Galatasaray (Turkey), PSG,
Benfica, Porto and Aston Villa.
FC Barcelona,
Real Madrid and,
Manchester United
will be on the top
of Numballs Football
Social League
for next years
