Since November 21st, hundreds of Guatemalan citizens have been taking to the streets on weekends to protest against the government. Their main complaints are government corruption, the lack of money invested to fight Covid-19 and the government 2021 budget*.

For the first time ever, the Time magazine has chosen a “Kid of the Year” as the “Person of the Year”. Gitanjali Rao, aged 15, is a young scientist who has used technology to tackle important issues, such as fighting opioid* addiction, cyberbullying and cleaning contaminated drinking water.

The Italian government approved on December 3rd a law banning travel between regions over the Christmas period to try and contain the country’s second Covid-19 wave. The restrictions will occur between the 21st December 2020 and the 6th January 2021.

The United Nations and Ethiopia established an agreement on December 2nd allowing the UN to send humanitarian aid* to Tigré, a region of the country where conflicts have been taking place since November. The agreement allows for the free circulation of humanitarian aid.

RESEARCHERS CREATE FIRST GLOBAL MAP OF BEESScientists have developed a map that shows the location of the more than 20,000 species of bees in the world. It is the first time that this has been done. The unprecedented* map was published in the scientific magazine Current Biology on November 19th. The map should help preserve these insects that carry out an important role in the pollination of plants.

Bees are at risk of extinction due to deforestation and the use of pesticides (substances that kill insects in agriculture). To create the map, researchers compared a list of the location of the more than 20,000 species of bees with almost six million public records of the geographic positions of species around the world. Thus, they were able to get a more accurate listing of the places inhabited by bees around the globe.

FIOCRUZ WARNS OF INCREASE IN CASES AND DEATHS DUE TO COVID-19 IN BRAZIL

A study made using figures from the period between the 8th and the 21st November, carried out by the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz) and published on November 27th, shows a worsening of the Covid-19 panorama in Brazil. “The consolidated data for the country reveals a sudden increase in the number of cases and deaths from Covid-19 (...), after a long period where a reduction was seen in these indicators. It cannot yet be said that Brazil is experiencing a ‘second wave’ of the pandemic, but this reversal in the trend of a reduction in these indicators should serve as an alert for the entire health system”, stated the Fiocruz Observatory Covid-19 Bulletin.

40% OF BRAZILIAN ADULTS HAVE A SEDENTARY* LIFESTYLE, SAYS THE IBGE

According to research carried out by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), released in November, about 40% of adult Brazilians do not practice enough physical activity for their age group.

These people don’t carry out any type of physical exercise throughout the week, or they exercise for less than two hours and a half a week, which is the minimum time recommended for an adult to be considered healthy. The study took into account the physical activities carried out during leisure time, at work or when commuting* to work.

The data is part of research to assess the health of Brazilians. The objective is to understand the quality of life of the Brazilian population and thus help authorities define actions to improve the country’s health services.

*sedentary: inactive, with little physical activity. *commuting: traveling between one’s home and place of work.
