FROM THE CLERGYA High Holy Day Focus: Shabbat

Due to hospital policy, clergy and BHC Cares volunteers have no way of knowing you are in the hospital unless you or a family member inform us. INFO: Iris Powell, [email protected] or 410-764-1587, ext. 224.

IN THE HOSPITAL?

Neither Rosh Hashanah nor Yom Kippur takes place on Shabbat this year, but both are intimately linked to that weekly holiday. We will gather in the coming weeks to celebrate community and creation and to consider our intentions and behavior. I am thrilled to feel BHC’s energy during these wonderful days of gathering and prayer. I also encourage us all to allow that energy, gathering, and prayer to overflow to the other holidays of the year, specifically Shabbat. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur come with a special spirit, but their focus on community and creation can also be found in the mood, spirit, and prayers of Shabbat evening or morning. While less intense, Shabbat can even lead to consideration of our intentions and behavior; we needn’t wait for the next set of High Holy Days.

For the second year, BHC will be using our new machzor (High Holy Day prayerbook), Mishkan HaNefesh. This book is a companion volume to Mishkan T’filah, the prayerbook that we use on Shabbat. Reform Judaism’s prayerbooks are filled with a combination of tradition and innovation, drawing from across a vast heritage, such as Torah and modern poetry; medieval philosophy to contemporary ponderings; Israeli poetry to the works of Reform Jewish thinkers.

Our Rosh Hashanah machzor considers Shabbat with words from the late leading Reform Jewish thinker, Rabbi W. Gunther Plaut: “We must understand that doing nothing, being silent and open to the world, letting things happen inside, can be as important as—and sometimes more important than—what we commonly call ‘useful.’” On the upcoming High Holy Days, I invite us to ponder the world and our lives. On each week’s Shabbat, I invite you to join us for Friday night and Saturday morning services, Shabbat morning Torah study, and BHC’s nurturing community, as we ponder the world and our lives.

– Rabbi Busch

Baltimore Hebrew Congregation is entering a vision and planning process for our building, campus, and future. This process depends on our membership’s participation.

Save the date for our Sacred Space Workshop on Sunday, October 30, 9 am-5 pm. RSVP: Esther Rosenfeld, [email protected] or 410-764-1587.

We hope you join this important visioning discussion. More details on the full process in the President’s column on page 3.

SAVE THE DATE! BHC’S SACRED SPACE WORKSHOP

Baltimore Hebrew Congregation Bulletin • Number 2 • October 2016 • 28 Elul 5776 – 29 Tishri 5777

From our early 19th century beginning, Baltimore Hebrew Congregation has evolved in many dynamic ways, and now we have the challenge and opportunity to engage in a Vision Plan that will help define our future at the Park Heights location. The need for this process is clear: our facility, while beautiful and welcoming, is large and expensive to maintain as the size of the congregation has decreased and the use of the space has changed. In addition, BHC has a large campus in a strategic and desirable location. The leadership at BHC has discussed this need for several years and we have engaged CHAI (Comprehensive Housing Assistance Incorporated) to organize and facilitate a Vision Planning process with us this year. CHAI, an agency of The Associated, is a well-known organization dedicated to developing and supporting neighborhoods with substantial Jewish populations, with a focus on Northwest Baltimore. CHAI, which will serve as project manager, will bring together a team that includes Mahan Rykiel Associates, an award-winning landscape architecture, urban design, and planning firm in Baltimore; Colbert Matz Rosenfelt, Inc, a civil engineering company; Ziger Snead, architects, as well as other consultants in a process over a several month period leading to a plan for our future.

This will be a highly interactive and collaborative process with participation from the entire BHC community. A Steering Committee has been established under the leadership of BHC 1st Vice President, Richard D. Gross, and Len Weinberg as co-chair, which will interact closely with CHAI and the Vision Plan team throughout the two phases of this project: Phase 1 will define the scope and dimensions of the Vision Plan, and Phase 2 will determine space and programmatic options available to BHC that will guide the future development of our facility and the campus. I want to highlight two parts of the first phase to encourage your participation.

The first is a digital multi-platform engagement website to solicit input from our congregation on the Vision Plan and inform stakeholders on the process. The website, which is scheduled to go live on Monday, September 26, will provide the opportunity for all of you to participate in the planning process from the comfort of your homes and anonymously if you desire. The website includes an opinion survey, a community/campus mapping feature, a resource page and a calendar. With this input, the Vision Plan team will work closely with the Steering Committee to put forward a project narrative for all to see and comment on.

The second is a day-long Sacred Spaces Workshop which will take place on Sunday, October 30. The goal of this workshop is to engage and educate BHC leadership and other members of our community in a visioning for our facility and campus that will include: an overview of Jewish sacred-space models and architecture, articulate future opportunities to create innovative and sacred spaces on the BHC campus, a walk of our site and a discussion of next steps.

From 1845 Lloyd Street to 1891 Madison Avenue to 1951 Park Heights Avenue, BHC has quite a legacy of creating religious environments in which Jewish life and learning can thrive. We plan to stay at our current location but with new ideas about our future.

I am very excited that this planning process will energize our work and will continue to make BHC the destination for Reform Judaism in the 21st century.

Artist’s Biography: Rabbi Gila Colman Ruskin was ordained by Hebrew Union College in 1983. She received an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Hebrew Union College in 2008. Since being ordained in 1983, she has served in a wide variety of rabbinical, educational, and pastoral roles.

Rabbi Gila was the founding rabbi of Congregation Chevrei Tzedek, which she served from 1989 to 2004. During her tenure, the congregation expanded from 10 to 120 family units. Between 2004-2007, she conducted High Holiday and other services in a number of settings. Since 2007, she has been the rabbi of Temple Adas Shalom-Harford Jewish Center in Havre de Grace, Maryland. Because of her initiative, the Temple has a Jewish holiday garden in partnership with Pearlstone’s Kayam Farm, and a Jewish calendar corridor with mosaics and murals for each holiday. The Temple has also been acclaimed by the B’nai Mitzvah revolution of the Union of Reform Judaism.

Rabbi Gila is a tremendously talented and experienced educator, and she is extremely creative. She has developed innovative curricula for Jewish education at the preschool, middle school, high school, and adult levels. She has also written many poems, prayers, short stories, essays, and untold numbers of ditties and the like in honor of birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and other important events in the lives of those she loves. In the past few years, Rabbi Gila has been making exquisite mosaics with Jewish themes.

Temple Adas Shalom in Havre de Grace is adorned with many of Rabbi Ruskin’s mosaics, in the sanctuary, social hall, and temple office. Members of the congregation of all ages can often be found in the library, gluing colorful tiles into the Jewish themed mosaics.

Rabbi Gila lives in Baltimore with her husband, Dr. Paul Ruskin. Her children include Dr. Samuel Ruskin, Chagit Ruskin, Shoshana Ruskin, Rabbi Ari Lev Fornari, and Tali Ruskin. She has four grandchildren: Shiran, Noa, Idan, and Zeev.

Sukkot Learning: BHC is excited to link our fall Hoffberger Gallery exhibit with our Sukkot learning. Rabbi Gila is both the artist exhibiting in the gallery and also the teacher on Sukkot Evening. See page 5 for details on this learning opportunity.

Commentary from the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism: “A community with the opportunity to choose its own leadership makes a statement about its own character by virtue of the choice it makes. We are therefore responsible for creating a community that fosters the growth of good leadership and choosing wisely among the candidates who wish to govern. What we do, or don’t do, on Election Day will define the character of our nation.”

A playdate is a time that parents arrange for their young children to play together, as defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, but they are so much more than that. We all know that playdates are fun but, according to Dr. Heather Wittenberg, they can boost your child’s brain power, too! So many development processes are put into practice at the same time, such as social and emotional growth and physical motor skills, big and little. And playdates are an amazing experimental laboratory for your child’s social skills. Here is a brief list of academic and development benefits of playdates observed by Wittenberg:

• Baby Benefits: Don’t feel pressured to sign baby up for special classes, but go ahead and do it if YOU enjoy the activity, or you like spending time with other parents in the class. Even the youngest babies “absorb” their parents’ interests and feelings. Chatting with friends over coffee or taking walks at the park also counts as baby playdates – nothing fancy (or expensive) needed!• Toddlers Too: Arrange playdates for your toddler, even if it seems they’re not interested. Toddlers tend to engage in mostly parallel play – meaning they play independently, alongside other children. Not much interaction takes place. But don’t be fooled – they’re keeping a careful eye on their peers, soaking in lots of social rules and skills in the process.• Preschoolers’ Play Power: Age 3-5 is the key stage for learning the social skills basics of turn-taking, sharing, empathy, and patience. Cooperative play has kicked in by now, which helps fuel the imaginative “make believe” games that are essential in building friendships, creativity, and problem solving. Make the most of playdates during these years!• Parents as Coaches: Playdates are most successful when parents actively plan the details of the playdate, like getting down on the floor with the kids to set the right tone at the beginning of the playdate, being available close-by for supervision and conflict resolution, and stepping in when someone seems tired, hungry, or needs to go to the potty.

Playdates are also a wonderful way for families to get to know one another. Our E.B. Hirsh Early Childhood Center playdates schedule is posted below and on our website. We look forward to playing together.

YEYouth Education

In our Youth Education program this year we are revamping our connection to families by making some small changes to our Parent Communication. Our youngest families, 3 years old-2nd grade, will be handed a half-page letter as they leave our program on Sunday morning. This letter will contain not only information and questions to ask the children in the car, but it will also highlight upcoming events. For our 3rd-7th grade families we will send a text Sunday morning to parents with three questions to ask their child(ren) on the car ride home. These teacher communication pieces will be reinforced with a weekly newsletter.

In our Tuesday newsletter we will include a link to a weekly video about the Torah portion. We are encouraging all families to watch this (3-4 minutes) together during the week. On Sunday in our opening assembly, “Morning Sh’ma,” we will ask grade-level questions about the video. Classes will compete for prizes and the chance to win the Golden Kiddush Cup award for all the information they remember from the video.

Last, we will move towards having a buddy program in our Youth Education program. Students in 6th-7th grades will be given buddies in kindergarten and 1st grade. During the year, the buddies will have time to build relationships, get to know each other and participate in some projects together. This is a great opportunity to continue to build our community.

Youth GroupL’Shanah Tova to all of our families! We are definitely off to a sweet start to the new year. I have enjoyed getting to know BHC youth this past month, and I cannot wait to continue learning, growing, and having a blast with them. In addition to our amazing High Holy Days education opportunities, we have many exciting youth programs this month.

The 1st-7th grade youth program will be “Escape the Room.” This interactive, problem-solving game asks participants to crack different puzzles and codes to escape a mysterious room. This event will be on Saturday, October 8, 5-8 pm and will include dinner, an escape the room challenge for each age group, and a Havdalah service.

Our 8th-12th grade youth members are working hard and making their voices heard by creating and participating in new engagement opportunities at BHC. The Teen Advisory Council is comprised of a passionate, intelligent and fun group of teens who will continue to meet once a month to engage with their peers, brainstorm new programs and ideas, and participate in leadership building activities. Look out over the next few month for programs, panels and community service opportunities created by our teens!

Due to the High Holy Days we will not be meeting for Family Mitzvah Corps this month, but our families have already begun to learn so much about social justice, food ethics, and social issues such as homelessness and hunger. I have had the pleasure of watching these families make an impact in their own lives and in the lives of the people we are helping at Paul’s Place.

If you have any questions, would like to RSVP for our 1st-7th grade program of the month, our Family Mitzvah Corps Program in the spring, or if you would like to volunteer/staff a program, contact me, [email protected] or 410-764-1587 ext. 248.

OFF TO A GREAT START

BHC Cares sponsors Phone Connection, a program in which volunteers call congregants who are unable to get out. A simple call can let homebound members know they are not forgotten. We are always looking for congregants to help with this rewarding program. Let us know if you know of someone who will benefit from such a call. CLChai Life: 20s & 30s CommunityHIGH SPIRITS IN OCTOBEROctober will create high spirits this fall with Chai Life. This unique opportunity aims to connect and engage 20s & 30s, so contact BHC if interested. Our dedicated Traffic Squad shows up every Sunday during the school year. While students of the Religious School and their parents are still 30 minutes from leaving their homes, the Brotherhood Traffic Squad sets up...ready to roll. Upon arrival at BHC, everyone is greeted with the smiling faces and warm welcome of our dedicated men. Some have done this for many years, even though their children are long out of school. Others are in their first years of service. They make sure that our children are safe from oncoming cars, while keeping the line of cars moving. INFO: Jordan Loran, [email protected].

The BHC Brotherhood extends a wish for all to have a very happy, healthy, prosperous, and sweet New Year. L’Shana Tovah to all.

Yahrzeit literally means “year’s time” or anniversary . By the recitation of Kaddish at the time of Yahrzeit, we pay tribute to those who blessed us in life and continue to bless us through memory .

In this spirit, our Congregation makes it possible to establish memorials for everlasting remembrance . A page in the Book of Memorial, or in combination with a Sanctuary Seat Plaque, may be dedicated as a memorial to your loved one .

INFO: Francie Gill, fgill@baltimorehebrew .org, 410-764-1587, ext . 226 . Or, simply fill in and return the entire form and mail to BHC, 7401 Park Heights Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21208 .
