Coming home from Costco a few days ago, I turned onto Textile and saw the familiar tree I’ve noticed the last few years. It always seems to have a head start changing colors from other trees nearby. Sure enough, green was giving ground to orange. And one look at the calendar affirms that the season has changed—summer is grudgingly relinquishing its grip to fall. To be sure, the earth’s seasons aren’t the only seasons that mark our lives. Seasons change from childhood to adulthood, and everywhere in between. They change from parenthood to empty nest—one job to another, and sometimes to unemployment or retirement. Seasons of health can turn into sickness or vice versa. The list goes on. It’s also true in our faith walk. Seasons change from faithlessness to faith, darkness to light, sorrow to healing. As seasons turn, our routines and priorities change, and we may forget or neglect habits of prayer, study, service and worship. The writer of Ecclesiastes pens: “There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.” Ten verses later, after illustrating the point by contrasting birth and death, tears and laughter, and more, he boldly states that God “has made everything beautiful in its time” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 11). May we see the beauty in this season and may we also turn to an unchanging God whose love is available to us in every season of our lives. See you in church.

“Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not recognize that it was Jesus. So He called out to them, “Children, do you have any fish?” “No,” they answered. He told them, “Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it there, and they were unable to haul it in because of the great number of fish.” John 21:4-6

Our church is casting our net out into the community. We are going into the community to seasonal events Summerfest, Oktoberfest, Trail to Santa, and the Bunny Trail to share the joy of our church home with everyone. Bible Buddies

In October we are going to be presenting bibles to children starting third grade. What is a Bible Buddy? An adult or young adult, usually (but not required) someone outside of the family. We are looking for adults who are willing to buddy up with these children as they continue on their faith journey. Ideally, the buddies (adult and child) will develop a lifelong friendship and mentoring relationship; if nothing else, say “Hi” on Sunday morning, or remember a birthday or holiday by sending a card. Knowledge of the Bible is helpful, but not required. Willingness to take an interest in a young person is highly sought after. Consider this fun opportunity to say yes to the next generation! Hello Everyone! I don’t know about you, but this school year started off kinda crazy and

October 2019 • First United Methodist Church of Saline • Steeple News Volume 28 • Number 10

I’m ready to get settled into a routine.

The month of September is a crazy one for all of us! And it takes a little bit of time for each of us to get settled in and get into a little bit of a rhythm. That’s what the month of October is for our youth ministry. We had a crazy start, but now we are settling into our routine and getting ready for the next big thing that God is going to put in front of us!

The month of September started out with our first ever trip to PointFest! PointFest is a Christian music concert held at Cedar Point every year. We got to see worship bands like Elevation Worship, along with other Christian artists like Zach Williams and Toby Mac. And the best part is that we got to ride some roller coasters too! What an awesome way to start the school year! From there we rolled right into our Parent Meeting which had a great turn out, and then right into Rummage Sale week. Talk about a busy week! Our first Sunday night Underground was on September 22

nd and we had a great turn out to start the year off right!

Like I said at the beginning of this note, October is all about settling into the groove. At the end of the month we are taking our 1

st Year Confirmation Class to run the Feed My Sheep

meal in Ann Arbor, which should be a great experience for everyone involved! Other than that, we are simply getting used to meeting on Sunday nights as well as our other weekly programs, and we are looking forward to seeing you there!

Things seem to be going well and trending upward! Can’t wait to see what God has in store for us next! Grace&Peace, Jay Leadley, Director of Youth & Family Ministries

Lay Servant Ministry

The Fall 2019 Lay Servant Classes brochures are available at the Opportunity Wall. Classes

will be held various dates and times in October and November, at three different locations,

Ypsilanti First UMC, Dixboro UMC, and Jackson First UMC. Lay Servants serve the local

church in any way in which their witness/leadership/service inspires others to a deeper

commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship. If a person wanting to be a Lay

Servant has never taken a class, the Basic Class should be taken first. In the Basic Class

participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts, and to consider

the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, and being part

of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship. Persons not wanting to be

a Lay Servant may also take classes for personal enrichment. Registration for most classes

is due October 15. If you have questions, please contact the church office, 734-429-4730.
