Bankers know valuewhen they see it —

in precastprestressed concrete

Architects report that banking clients areoften so pleased with a precast prestressedconcrete building that they specify thesame material for subsequent projects.

For example, a large bank may commission a prototype structure which willminimize the time between the decision tobuild a new branch and its opening. Amodular precast prestressed concretebuilding can save months in design andconstruction time. The same, standardcomponents may be used for facilities ofdifferent sizes and configurations, or toexpand existing structures. And precastprestressed elements are sure to be readilyavailable at sites throughout the nation.

The mass of precast concrete panels andexposed structural members lends a mostdesirable sense of permanence, stability, and security. Where a welcoming opennessis wanted, the strength of prestressingpermits shallow structural depth andslender exterior columns. Inside the bank, long spans provide a column-free, spaciouslobby, and flexible office area.

Concrete’s thermal resistance savesenergy. Precast prestressed concrete is fire-resistant and durable, enhancing securityand reducing insurance costs. Plant precasting and rapid erection ease congestionduring construction at city-center sites.Mass production, minimum on-site labor, and early completio.n hold down first cost.Low insurance, maintenance, and energybills reduce life-cycle cost.

Bankers know value when they see it.Why not follow their example? Test theoutstanding qualities of precast prestressedconcrete by considering it for your nextbuilding.

Single teesanimate chain ofbranch bank buildings

The First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Atlanta,Georgia, selected prestressed concrete single tees and harmonizing precast columns to add life and distinctiveness to theirbranch building at Lithonia, Georgia. They liked the resultwell enough to repeat the design at six more locations.

Standard components are factory-produced to ensure thehighest quality. They are rapidly erected, easily maintained, and fire resistant, in addition to their lively esthetic contribution.

Architect says: “Proven cost efficiency amajor consideration”at midwest S &L

Occidental Plaza is the home office of theOccidental Savings and Loan Association inOmaha, Nebraska. The roof system contains 75prestressed double tees, 30 ft. (9.1 m) long and16 in. (0.4 m) deep. Proven cost efficiency wasthe principal reason for the choice of these units.

Because the tees are exposed throughout thebuilding, finished simply with a heavily texturedpaint, suspended ceilings are unnecessary. Spacebetween tee stems provides a continuous 3-ft.(0.9-m) module for strip fluorescent lighting.Off-site fabrication of components under controlled conditions, and repetition of standardunits, meant further economy and ease ofconstruction.

Tolerances of 3/16 in.easily obtained inprecast concretewindow units

Great Southern Savings & Loan has it mainoffices at Springfield, Missouri. Tolerancerestrictions required a building material whichcould be accurately produced to specifieddimensions. Rubber reglets were cast intowindow panels with a tolerance of only 3/16 in.(4.8 mm) to meet glazing requirements. Precastprestressed concrete, plant-cast under controlledconditions, supplied the answer.

Floor and roof decks consist of double tees, spanning between concrete frames and cantilevering to the outside walls. The full load of thenorth and south window walls was transferreduniformly to the three cantilevered decks. Stemsof the second-floor tees were shored until weldconnections were completed. Then the load wasreleased gradually. Each floor and connectionwas designed to carry half the window wall load,in case one connection should fail.

Both structural and architectural precast unitswere prestressed to prevent hairline cracking.Repetition of these units throughout the buildingcontributed to economy. Fire resistance, andrapid erection which did not hinder other trades, also recommended precast concrete. And adesirable impression of the security and permanence of this banking institution is conveyed bythe concrete units.

Precast panels act asformwork for columns and beams in bank/office

Architectural precast concrete wall panels are detailedto provide formwork for exterior columns and spandrelbeams in the Columbia Bank Building at Richland,Washington. The result was reduction of field laborand construction time. The panel depth required tocast the columns creates a deep reveal, and the buildingis sited to maximize the effect of shadows. Insulatedafter placement, the panels are tinted by buff cement.

A prestressed double tee spanning 54 ft. (16.5 m)provides pedestrian access over water from a parkinglot. Hangers from tee stems on the underside supportpower, irrigation, and sewer lines.

Small site?No problem forthis drive-in bank

At the time of design, Kansas law stated that theFidelity State Bank Drive-in Facility at Garden Citymust be located within one-half mile of the main bank. The best site available was only 100 x 140 ft. (30 x43 m). The ease and speed of erection of precastconcrete, requiring no on-site storage area, recommended it for the job. The small, rounded structuremakes optimum use of space, easing the circulationof cars.

According to the architect, precast concrete wasselected for all exterior facings and elements “becauseof almost unlimited color possibilities, the variety offinishes available, and enhanced freedom with regardto shape.”

Precast exterior provides a tasteful, yet highlydistinctive, appearance.

Rapid construction with precast concrete required no sacrifice of quality.
