Numbers 14:11-1211 The LORD said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.”

Numbers 14:19-2519 In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now.” 20 The LORD replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked.

Page 3: Numbers 14:11-12

21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, 22 not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.

Page 4: Numbers 14:11-12

24 But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me whole-heartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. 25 Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea.”

The Fear FactorNumbers 10:11 through 14

Fear often does two things that are rather unhelpfulIt freezes us in place

It keeps us looking backwardsIt forces us to move forward

Page 6: Numbers 14:11-12

Numbers 1011 On the twentieth day of the second month of the second year, the cloud lifted from above the tabernacle of the Testimony. 12 Then the Israelites set out from the Desert of Sinai and traveled from place to place until the cloud came to rest in the Desert of Paran.

ComplaintsSelective memories

Unrealistic expectations

Page 9: Numbers 14:11-12

Numbers 11 4 …“If only we had meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. 6 But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”

Page 10: Numbers 14:11-12

Moses them complains to the LordWhy did you give me these people?

I cannot do this alone anymore! How am I going to give them meat!

Page 11: Numbers 14:11-12

12 Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth? Why do you tell me to carry them in my arms, as a nurse carries an infant, to the land you promised on oath to their forefathers?

Page 12: Numbers 14:11-12

13 Where can I get meat for all these people? They keep wailing to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’ 14 I cannot carry all these people by myself; the burden is too heavy for me. 15 If this is how you are going to treat me, put me to death right now…

Page 13: Numbers 14:11-12

70 men are to be filled with the spirit of God to help Moses

Moses is no longer completely alone in leading the people

The Lord provides meat for the peopleThose who are so anxious to eat meat

in the desert die

Page 14: Numbers 14:11-12

31 Now a wind went out from the LORD and drove quail in from the sea.

33 But while the meat was still between their teeth and before it could be consumed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and he struck them with a severe plague.

Page 15: Numbers 14:11-12

The fear…There isn’t enough food

There isn’t enough variety of foodThe new fear…

Moses thinks he is in chargeCan we really trust a man married

to a foreigner

Page 16: Numbers 14:11-12

Numbers 12Miriam and Aaron began to talk against Moses because of his Cushite wife, for he had married a Cushite. 2 “Has the LORD spoken only through Moses?” they asked. “Hasn’t he also spoken through us?” And the LORD heard this.

Page 17: Numbers 14:11-12

9 The anger of the LORD burned against them, and he left them. 10 When the cloud lifted from above the Tent, there stood Miriam—leprous, like snow.

Page 18: Numbers 14:11-12

Each time the Lord punishes those who complain or act out

of fear or jealousyThe next fear…

Somewhat unexpected

Page 19: Numbers 14:11-12

Numbers 13The LORD said to Moses, 2 “Send some men to explore the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the Israelites. From each ancestral tribe send one of its leaders.” 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb…8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea…

Page 20: Numbers 14:11-12

21 So they went up and explored the land…27 They gave Moses this account: “We went into the land to which you sent us, and it does flow with milk and honey! Here is its fruit.

Page 21: Numbers 14:11-12

28 But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there. 29 The Amalekites live in the Negev; the Hittites, Jebusites and Amorites live in the hill country; and the Canaanites live near the sea and along the Jordan.”

Page 22: Numbers 14:11-12

30 Then Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said, “We should go up and take possession of the land, for we can certainly do it.”

Page 23: Numbers 14:11-12

It wasn’t just that ten men were fearful

It was that those ten men spread the flame of fear

throughout the camp

Page 24: Numbers 14:11-12

32 And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they had explored. They said, “The land we explored devours those living in it. All the people we saw there are of great size.

Page 25: Numbers 14:11-12

And we are back were we began…I wish we were in Egypt!

Things were good and easy there!Don’t you remember when…

Let’s return to the good old days

Page 26: Numbers 14:11-12

Numbers 142 “If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! 3 Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn’t it be better for us to go back to Egypt?” 4 And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

Page 27: Numbers 14:11-12

Joshua makes one last attemptGod promised

God will protect usGod will give us victory

Page 28: Numbers 14:11-12

9 …Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them.” 10 But the whole assembly talked about stoning them.

Page 29: Numbers 14:11-12

11 The LORD said to Moses, “How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? 12 I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they.”

Page 30: Numbers 14:11-12

20 The LORD replied, “I have forgiven them, as you asked. 21 Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, 22 not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times—

Page 31: Numbers 14:11-12

— 23 not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it.

Page 32: Numbers 14:11-12

Like all the other times…Punishment followed

40 days of scouting the land40 years of wander in the desert

Page 33: Numbers 14:11-12

34 For forty years—one year for each of the forty days you explored the land—you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.’

Page 34: Numbers 14:11-12

40 Early the next morning they went up toward the high hill country. “We have sinned,” they said. “We will go up to the place the LORD promised.” 41 But Moses said, “Why are you disobeying the LORD’s command? This will not succeed! 42 Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you.

Page 35: Numbers 14:11-12

45 Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah.

Page 36: Numbers 14:11-12

Putting it all togetherWe need to be careful about our

complainingFor the most part our complaining

creates more problemsWe should seek to be problem solvers

Page 37: Numbers 14:11-12

Putting it all togetherWe need to be careful not to be

ruled by fearFear, without our realizing it,

often causes us to look back and romanticize the past

We need to be forward thinkers

Page 38: Numbers 14:11-12

Putting it all togetherWe need to be careful not to under-

estimate God’s powerWe spend too much time thinking the

worst, imagining failure and having negative conversations

If God is asking us to attempt something new, God will provide

Page 39: Numbers 14:11-12

Putting it all togetherFear kills dreams and future realities

Fears keep us wandering in the desert instead of enjoying the promised landFear is depletes us of energy, action, creativity and the vision of success

Page 40: Numbers 14:11-12

Fear is valuable when we are truly in a life and death situation

Living in fear keeps us slaves to the past and separated from the

Promised Land
