ROGUE:_New Rules

of Beauty

What is beautiful in an age where rules have been broken, boundaries pushed and traditions reinvented?

by: Janine Ferisse Galgana

On its fifth year, the Ateneo Association for Communications Technology Manage-ment’s Numina definitely stayed true to the organization’s goal of going beyond

ideas. Numina, which stands for new media arts, is a digital arts competition which opened its doors to all college students in the NCR and inspired them to submit en-tries that embodies this year’s theme, ‘ROGUE: New Rules of Beauty’. The participants were able to express their take on the theme through their entries which were classi-fied into two divisions: the Digital Arts and Photo Manipulation. They were chal-lenged to capture the generation’s free-spirited and edgy personality in art by de-signing and developing their work using any computer program of their preference.

For each category, fourteen deserving entries were selected and were showcased during a 5-day exhibit at the Archaeology Wing of the Power Plant Mall. These entries were

also made available on Facebook for everyone to appreciate and vote for since audience votes was part of the criteria for judging, together with creativity & originality, execu-

tion & skill, and of course, relevance to the theme. It was also nice seeing entries coming from various schools such as At-eneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, College of St. Benilde, iAcademy, and many more.

The competition wouldn’t be complete without having a culminating event to wrap everything up. With the Ateneo Blue Eagles winning the first game of the UAAP basketball finals earlier that

day, everyone was definitely in a good mood as people gathered around the exhibit venue for the Numina Awards Night last September 24, 2011. ACTM’s very own Talent Pool was also present at the event, and they were able to render an awesome performance for all the attendees. Hosted by Iko dela Cruz and Vannah Pacis, the Awards Night was made even more enjoyable by the giving out of prizes to those who were able to answer the questions regarding the event itself and ACTM. And of course, everyone was charmed by the glam-orous models who participated in the fashion show which truly captured the attention of the crowd. All these took place while everybody’s waiting for the much-anticipated announcement of winners.

It goes without saying that all the entries are really amazing, and that they mirror the passion and creativity of the people behind these works. Despite this, the judges had to make a tough de-

cision in choosing the winners for each category, as well as those worthy of the special awards. The People’s Choice Award was given to Contrast Coutre by Tim Arafiles, and the Analog Soul’s Choice Award went to MONROE 2011 by Lisha Mae Bornilla. For the Digital Arts category, the first and second runner up award was given to Grotesque Beauty by Maria Angelica Morelos, which also received the Wacom’s Choice Award, and Delight by Ann Claudine Delfin. Lies, Treachery and Odile by Darylle Mon-alon bagged the first place. Runners-up for the Photo Manipulation cate-gory were Persevere by Janine Alyson Duenas and That Faceless Corporation by Dominic Daluz. Last but definitely not the least is Mikhalo Ean Dacay’s Wired Beauty which won the first place.

AWARDS NIGHT

To all the winners and the participants, congratulations! Indeed, Numina 2011 is a huge success! Let us also not forget the people who worked behind this event for they have

done a wonderful job in putting everything together. As CTM majors, may this inspire all of us to make use of our talents and unleash our creativity. We still have a long way ‘til the school year is over, so we can all expect nothing but the best from our home organization.
