Cavell Nursery has two sessions per day which are mixed classes of 3 and 4 year olds.Each child attends
for either 5 morning or afternoon
sessions a week

qualified Nursery Nurse

There is good access within and around the school site
The Nursery has a disabled toilet and shower
The school works closely with the School Support Service which includes Speech Therapy, an Educational Psychologist,
Behavioural and Learning Support Teachers, School Health Advisor and a School Doctor
If a child has special needs they will be given an Individual Education Plan (IEP) with specific targets relating to that need.
The IEP will be regularly reviewed and shared with parents
We are now able to offer some Full Day Care places
through the East City & Framingham Earl Area Children’s Centre – See

Once you have been offered a place, you will be invited to visit the nursery with your child and see some of the activities that we provide
and spend an hour with us.
You will also be invited to attend an Induction meeting without your child – we will be able to give you information about our school, answer your questions and give your child a starting date together with confirmation
of which sessions they will be able to attend.
On the day your child starts you will be asked to fill in an admission form with medical details about your child and emergency phone numbers.
There are also various permission slips to be filled in.Please bring your child’s birth certificate with you as we need to see it to
verify your child’s date of birth.
When you bring your child at the start of a session please help them to find their name on the felt board and their coat peg.
We encourage a love of books and stories, and provide your child with a book bag.
Each day, on arrival, you and your child can choose a book to take home – please read it with your child and then they may want to read it back to
you.After everyone has arrived we have a whole class circle time where we talk about the days activities and play some phonic games – this will
teach them how to distinguish between different sounds.
The children can then choose from a range of planned activities i.e. threading, puzzles, construction, role play, sand, water, painting, maths
and language games.There will always be at least one adult-led activity
We operate a free flow system whereby the children can choose to spend time inside or outside where there are planned activities covering all
areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum
We do some whole class numeracy activities after we have tidied up – these include number rhymes and songs, counting games, numeral
recognition and shape activities
We always end the session with a story and songs.
We provide a drink of milk and a piece of fruit each day. There is no charge for this.(Please let us know if your child does not drink milk)Water is also provided throughout the session.
Nursery education is all about learning through ‘doing’.Your child will be spending time outside–running, jumping, climbing and gardening and although aprons are worn during messy activities, please send your child in clothes that are easily washed and give freedom of movement - jogging bottoms or elasticated waists on trousers are recommended. These also enable children to be more independent when going to the toilet.The school has a uniform policy, which we ask Nursery parents to follow, as far as possible, however it is flexible for Nursery children. Sweatshirts and Fleeces are available to buy from the school.
Only stud earrings are allowed at school, as any other types may be dangerous in a busy play environment.
Please make sure that NO other jewellery is worn, as the school cannot take responsibility for it being lost or damaged.
Rules within the Nursery are discussed with the children, and relate to walking, talking, sharing and being kind to one another.
We praise good behaviour and tell children when and why they have behaved in an unacceptable way.
If your child cannot cope with a situation we may have to remove them from it for a short while. We will always inform you if we are concerned about your child’s behaviour.
We have two computers and a interactive whiteboard that the children use independently, and provide as many Information and Communication Technology (ICT) opportunities as possible e.g. remote control toys, tape recorders and calculators.
We go into the Hall once a week for P.E. or Drama

Early Years Foundation
Stage Curriculum
The Nursery and Reception classes form the Early Years Foundation Stage. The learning environment is carefully planned - we look at what the children can do, and build on this.
The six areas of learning shown above are taught through the use of topics – a copy of the current topic web which shows an overview of the intended learning and teaching, along with a more detailed weekly plan are on display in the Nursery corridor.

We work closely with the Reception Class all year i.e. children visiting Reception on a regular basis in the summer term, and Reception children visiting Nursery according to
need.
There are weekly meetings with all Foundation Stage staff to discuss children, planning and the outside area.
In the summer term before they are due to transfer, every child will visit at least four times in small groups. We also take over the Reception classroom when they go on their
summer trip.
The Reception staff visit us regularly for story telling sessions.
There is a meeting arranged for parents in the summer term with Reception staff and the Headteacher.
We value your support, and believe that working together will greatly benefit the children.
We have a Home-School agreement that we talk you through when your child starts.
There are daily opportunities to chat with staff at the beginning or end of each session.
We have parent’s evenings in the autumn and spring terms, and produce a written report at the end of the summer term.
You are an automatic member of Cavell Friends, which arranges social and fundraising events such as Summer Fairs, Book Fairs and discos.We would love you to get involved by
either helping in the classroom, the library, the gardens or helping with fundraising.
We want all our children to grow and develop in a secure and positive environment. The physical and emotional well-being of each child is carefully monitored. Every member of school staff has a duty to ensure the safety of the children. We wish to work with you, as parents and carers, to ensure the best possible care for your child.
Occasionally there are situations which give us cause for concern and which we have to refer to the Social Work section of Children’s Services. Our prime concern is always the well-being of the children. If we act it is to protect the child.
We are required by law to follow the procedures laid down by the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB). By following the procedures we are in no way inferring that any parent or carer is responsible for wrong-doing.
Our designated teacher for Child Protection is Mr Wakeman, or in his absence, Mrs Bocz.

All Nursery Nurses and Assistants are qualified first aiders, and deal with minor incidents. Julie Foster is the school’s asthma link representative. If your child has an accident or appears unwell, we will contact you immediately.
If your child suffers from a bout of diarrhoea and/or sickness, you must keep them at home for a minimum of 48 hours from the last incidence.
If your child is going to be absent please phone the school office as early as possible on the first day.
Medicines
School staff are unable to administer medicines, except in exceptional circumstances, where the Head has agreed.
Asthma inhalers are kept secure in the Nursery along with a register, and list the necessary dosage and times the inhalers should be taken. Children administer their own inhalers, while supervised by a member of staff.
Head lice are a constant problem, and we recommend that parents use a ‘nit comb’ when their child’s hair has been washed and conditioned. If the lice are persistent then a preparation from a chemist should be used. If a child has head lice, the whole family should be treated to prevent re-infestation.
Where a child has permanent medical needs, a care plan is drawn up with parents to show all staff what should be done in certain circumstances. The school must be informed of all medical needs.

Complaints
If you are unhappy about any aspect of your child’s education or experience at school, please come and talk to us straight away. If your complaint cannot be resolved the Headteacher will give you a copy of the Complaints Procedure which will give further advice and guidance.
ANSWER:Children transfer in the September of the school year in which they are going to be five.
ANSWER:Make it fun – don’t pressure them.Choose books with them on subjects that they are interested in e.g. dinosaurs, cars, mini-beasts.Borrow our storysacks.Perhaps they can write a shopping list when you write yours.Praise their attempts and write the correct words underneath and let them take it with them when you go shopping.
ANSWER:Only if you have informed us beforehand, or telephoned the school.
ANSWER:No. The Local Authority funds each child for 15 hours per week in the Nursery. If you would like your child to stay at Nursery for lunch, Cavell Kids run a Wraparound Club between 11.45am and 12.15pm. If you need your child to stay longer, then this counts as Full Daycare. Wraparound Club and Full Daycare do have to be paid for. Information is available from Kirsty Frary and the East City & Framingham Earl Area Children’s Centre.
