Little Blossoms is a purpose built, single storey children’s day nursery which is set in the

heart of Clives Fruit Farm orchards with stunning views of the Malvern Hills. Our award winning nursery was established in October 2001 and is owned by former local health visitor Jane Clive and her husband Charlie. We are a happy, homely and stimulating day nursery which takes full advantage of our extensive orchards and woodland areas. We welcome children from three months old up to five years as well as an after school and holiday club. At Little Blossoms we nurture and care for your child to ensure that their transition from the familiarity of home into our environment allows both you and your child to feel confident in our care. We recognise and celebrate that all children are individuals and we encourage them to become confident, independent and to develop their own sense of self.

The Staff Team

At Little Blossoms, we have taken great care in choosing a committed, enthusiastic and professional team of staff, ensuring that experience, professionalism and qualifications are matched to each area of the nursery. With a good understanding of children’s individual needs, the staff are able to plan the next steps for your child’s play, learning and development. All our staff have been registered and police checked by Ofsted and the DBS. All staff are First Aid trained and are encouraged to attend other relevant training such as Behaviour Management and Health and Safety. In house training is given on a regular basis to encourage staff to develop a wide and varied range of skills. As a setting we hold termly staff and weekly team meetings to ensure that all staff are kept up date with changes to policies or legislation. The nursery is registered with Ofsted and operates in conjunction with the statutory framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage.

Safeguarding We support the children within our care, protect them from maltreatment and have robust procedures in place to prevent the impairment of children’s health and development. Little Blossoms will work with children, parents, external agencies and the community to ensure the welfare and safety of children and to give them the very best start in life. Children have the right to be treated with respect and to be safe from any abuse in whatever form.

Key person system and development profiles

At Little Blossoms, we operate a key person system where children are assigned to the member of staff who will see them the most. During their settling in time, should they develop a stronger bond with a different member of staff, then we would look to change their key person as we would rather the bond is one of natural choosing. The key person is primarily responsible for building a relationship with you as a parent, gathering information about your child and their home life through the course of the settling sessions, and from then on they will support your child’s growth and development through close observation, careful planning and the regular completion of an online learning journal. These journals are regularly updated and will contain observations of your child along with photos. You are welcome to log in to your individual and secure account and have a look at your child’s profile any time. You will have the chance to discuss the Learning Journey in a review meeting which you are invited to initially after 6-8 weeks, then at the end of every term.

Resources and activities Throughout all departments in the nursery, children are offered the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning experiences. These experiences are devised following careful observations of your children whilst taking into consideration individual likes and particular interests of the moment. All experiences provided follow our philosophy of a ‘hands on’ approach which ensures children learn through play and exploration, as children learn at their highest level in their play. A variety of activities are provided throughout the day with children choosing which ones they wish to access. The focus of all experiences is on the importance of the process involved for the children rather than the end product, so please do not be disappointed if your children do not bring home a piece of artwork every day. The nursery operates a free flow, indoor outdoor approach to children’s learning. Children have the opportunity to access a range of activities, either indoors or out, on a daily basis, regardless of the weather.

Meals and Nutrition

A healthy balanced diet is provided in our award winning ‘5 stars on the door’ kitchen with a hot farmhouse lunch at 12pm, a light tea at 4pm with snacks provided mid-morning and afternoon. Breakfast is offered to the babies in the Seedlings department as part of their weaning programme and is served between the hours of 8am and 9am. Menus operate on a six week rota and all meals are home cooked and nutritionally well-balanced. We are a nut free nursery and all ingredients used in the preparation of food are fresh from the farm shop or sourced as locally as possible.

Nursery Education Funding

Every child is eligible to claim Nursery Education Funding from the term immediately after their 3rd birthday, and we will register your child when the time comes. The grant provides a maximum of 15 hours, which can be offered in several different ways, during term time only. More details of this can be found on a separate letter which you will receive nearer to your child’s 3rd birthday.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Little Blossoms follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which was implemented in September 2008 and re-designed in September 2012. This curriculum has been designed to ensure that the individual needs of all children aged from birth up until the end of their reception year at primary school are met, with its main philosophy being on ‘learning through play.’

The 3 prime areas of learning are; 1 -Personal, Social and Emotional Development This involves Making relationships, Self-confidence and self-awareness, and Managing feelings and behaviour.

2 – Physical Development Included in this area is Moving and handling, and Health and self-care.

3-Communication and Language This area involves Listening and attention, Understanding, and Speaking These prime areas begin to develop quickly in response to relationships and experiences, and run through and support learning in all other areas. The prime areas continue to be fundamental throughout the EYFS. The 4 specific areas of learning are;

1- Literacy Reading and writing will be developed within this area.

2- Mathematics This area will enhance Numbers, and Shape, space and measure.

3- Understanding the World Included in this area is People and communities, The world, and Technology.

4- Expressive Arts and Design Staff will support and assess children in Exploring and using media and materials, and Being imaginative. These specific areas include essential skills and knowledge. They grow out of the prime areas, and provide important contexts for learning. Each department will inform you of which activities your child has enjoyed that day and there will be photographic evidence either on the walls or via digital photo frames for you to view at your leisure, so that you are able to see the activities provided and how your child accessed them.

Our Departments

Seedlings (3 months – 16 months) and Upper Seedlings (16 months – 2 yrs) The baby department benefits from two different areas one for younger babies and one for older, and both include separate sleep areas to ensure your little one can have a peaceful and relaxing nap during the day. The ratio in this department is 1 adult to 3 children.

In the Under 2’s department, children are able to experience a range of activities from body painting and baking, to soft play and outdoor fun. Your children will enjoy the many different musical and sensory experiences in which our enthusiastic staff team love to encourage all to join in with.

We firmly believe that children flourish when playing outdoors, enabling them to explore and help them make sense of the world around them. The under 2’s enjoy the outdoors as much as the older children, with their very own sensory garden! At Little Blossoms we are fortunate enough to be able to explore the outdoors further in the surrounding orchards, and the under 2’s department have many trips down to the farm to feed the animals.

Saplings (2 – 3 years)

At Little Blossoms, we ensure your child’s transition to the 2-3 year olds department, Saplings, runs as smoothly as possible with a number of settling sessions, and a supportive key person giving your child the reassurance to feel safe and cared for as they move up. The Saplings department benefits from three areas, which includes an art room. We are a very ‘messy’ nursery and the children will certainly have fun exploring in sand, water and flour play!

The large secure garden which is just for our under 3’s gives many challenging but achievable experiences for your children. From ride on toys and slides to the play house and a pirate boat, we aim to support those little imaginations through active role play as well as allowing time for winding down in the ‘quiet corner’.

All children have the opportunity to join in with our weekly music and movement session of ‘Tumble Tots’ in Saplings, as well as making their own music during song- time with musical instruments.

The Pippins departments are our pre-school rooms, where your children’s learning will be extended through the great emphasis on the environment, indoors and out. Our knowledgeable staff team can support your children to enjoy and achieve, with planned experiences that follow your children’s interests. Whether in the busy ‘small world area’ or the relaxing ‘cosy corner’, your children can build up those all important secure relationships by sharing a story with their key person or a game with their peers.

The separate garden areas have their very own mud kitchen which provide endless opportunities of fun. A wide open space allows the children the freedom to explore and express themselves. The ‘Busy Feet’ music and movement session keeps your children active, as well as weekly sessions at ‘Forest School’ where you will find the children sliding down the mudslides and searching for bugs- all parents welcome!

Your little ones will have fun getting messy in the creative area with weekly cooking sessions and daily art experiences. We aim to support all children to be self-assured, and with their imaginations running wild in the role play corner and weekly ‘Show and Tell’ sessions their confidence will grow.

What is Forest School?

The first British Forest School was set up at Bridgewater College, Somerset in 1995 following a visit to Denmark by their Nursery Nursing students. The Danish Pre-Schools each had their own woodland area where the students observed the children exploring their outdoor environment in an unstructured way. The benefits to the children were great – they grew in confidence, self-esteem and learned to appreciate the natural environment around them. Forest School is a child–led initiative which means that although each session is planned, it is also guided by the choices and interests that each child makes. By using the outdoor environment, children of all ages and abilities are encouraged to grow in confidence, independence and self–esteem. This is made possible by providing them with small achievable tasks so that a child never ‘fails’. As the child grows in self-esteem and self-confidence, the challenges become more complex. Both practitioners and parents of children involved in Forest School have reported positive changes in their independence, self esteem, health and well being as well as their social outlook. At Little Blossoms, every child in the Pippin departments have the opportunity to take part in Forest School, and we have our own two qualified Leaders who provide weekly sessions to ensure all children are able to access this exciting opportunity. We are always keen for our parents to participate in activities at Little Blossoms so if any parents would like to come along with us to Forest School, either to find out more about it or to possibly help out, please speak to a member of the Pippin teams.

Opening Times and Charges

Little Blossoms is open from Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm for 51 weeks of the year. We are

closed for 1 week at Christmas and we do not open on Bank Holidays. The new rates, to take effect from 1st September 2017 are detailed on the separate ‘Schedule of fees’. To secure a place with us at Little Blossoms, a registration fee of £50 is required. This will cover all the settling in sessions that we provide for you and your child, therefore no further payment is required for these sessions. Once a child is happy and settled in our care we would ideally like them to come to nursery for a minimum of 2 sessions per week e.g. 2 half day sessions or 1 full day plus 1 half day or two school days. This provides the children with continuity and enables them to form good relationships with the staff and our surroundings. Once a child is booked in we aim to be as flexible as possible and, subject to availability, we may be able to offer extra “occasional sessions” if parents need to work extra days or just enjoy some free time. How to Find us

Security; All parents/carers are requested to use the main door for entry and exit. This door is permanently locked and requires a member of staff to allow entry. NO ONE is allowed entry into the nursery unless they are known by staff members. Little Blossoms requires an ID photo of anyone who will be collecting your child and we have set up a system of family passwords as a secure system. We ask that you keep Little Blossoms up to date with any changes regarding your child and family. As part of our security policy, it is requested that parents do not open the door for other parents, even if they know who they are. Policies and guidance; Our policy folder is available at all times for parents and carers to see and your child’s settling sessions is an ideal opportunity. Once your child has been registered at Little Blossoms, a welcome pack will be given to you which contains relevant information which should be helpful to you for the duration of your time with us. In accordance with nursery policies children who are ill, have an infection or contagious disease, will be excluded from the nursery until fully recovered. This is in the best interests of the ill child and the other children in our care. Children who have suffered from any bouts of sickness or diarrhoea should have been free from symptoms for 48 hours before returning. We would be grateful if you could notify us as soon as possible if your child is not coming into nursery as this enables us to continue with the days activities as planned. In the event of adverse weather conditions or a severe infectious illness which prevents the correct number of staff from attending, we may be forced to close the nursery.

In the unlikely event that you feel you need to make a complaint about the nursery, the details of the procedure can be found in the policy folder or by contacting a senior member of staff.
