Learning Outcomes: Nurses will be able to describe evidence-based efforts to deal with
substance misuse problems in clinical health care settings for a more effective approach to re-
ducing harm to both patients and healthcare providers.
Objectives:
After this presentation, attendees will be able to:
1. Describe a variety of tools used to reduce incidents of violence from patients with substance
use disorders on acute care units.
2. Discuss best practices for interactions with persons suffering from substance use disorders.
3. Explain concepts of using verbal and physical personal safety techniques when working with
patients with substance disorders.
4. Develop a plan of care for patients with substance abuse from assessment to rehabilitation.
Target Audience: Nurses of all levels and other healthcare providers who wish to attend.
