Fixed MindsetA fixed mindset is one where we believe that our core personality, character, talent, abilities and intelligence are fixed. We are either smart or dumb. We are either talented at something or we aren’t. The world is made of some gifted people, whom the rest admire from the sidelines.
Fixed mindset statements:She’s just not a math person; She has natural artistic talent; I wasn’t good at writing--my son is just like me; she’s more althletic---her brother is better at academics
Growth MindsetA growth mindset is the opposite of a fixed mindset. It is where we believe that everything about a person’s abilities is changeable and shapeable. Through resilience and effort, anyone can build themselves into anything they want to be. So, there are no smart or dumb people-only those who have unlocked the potential of their intellect and those who haven’t.
Growth mindset statements:
I’m not good at that, yet; I made a mistake….I’m going to see what I can learn from it; This is a really hard problem, I love it!
Let’s Give it a Go!
Mindset Chutes and Ladders
But what about people who are born with a natural gift or talent like Michael Jordan or Walt Disney?
What about people who just have more intelligence than others like Einstein or Steve Jobs?
Aren’t some people just smarter or more talented than others?
Five Ways Parents Can Help a Child Develop a Growth Mindset
1. Recognize your own mindset.
2. Nurture persistence and productive struggle.
3. Praise effort rather than intelligence.
4. Develop a culture of “not yet.”
5. Celebrate failure as the first step of growth.
Nurture Effort, Persistence, and Productive Struggle
Praise the Effort not the Intelligence
Let’s Practice!
Develop a culture of the Power of YET!
