Food contains different substances that are needed for health. These are nutrients, water and fiber.

All food and drink provide nutrients.

Different types of foods provide nutrients in different amounts.

What is a NutrientA nutrient is a chemical

substance in food that helps maintain the body. Some provide energy. All help build cells and tissues, regulate bodily processes such as breathing. No single food supplies all the nutrients the body needs to function.

• The human body is two-thirds water.• Water is an essential nutrient that is involved in

every function of the body. • Water helps transport nutrients and waste

circulatory, and excretory functions • Water is needed for the utilization of the water-

soluble vitamins. • It is needed for the maintenance of proper body

temperature.
