started down th e stairway. Somewhere around th e f i f th or sixth f loor we came across F D N Ymembers trying to assist an overweight gentleman who said "he could no longer walk" we werealso in formed not to proceed any fur ther down this stairwell because it was f looded . W e startedto assist by gett ing a chair , which they could wheel him in the ha l lway to another staircase, butth e hall was too narrow. Officer Ha ll assisted in dragging th e individual w i t h F D N Y d o w n th estairs. At this point mysel f , O f f i c e r Beatty and the rest of N Y P D ESU proceeded down th e stairs behindthem. The sta irway led us out to the Plaza level of bu i ld ing one (w e still were not aware bui ldingtwo had collapsed). For some reason we decided to exit on the plaza level on the north sideadjacent to building six. As we exited we had to run the few feet to avoid being hit by fa l l ingdebris. Once under th e overhang of bui ld ing six we decided to go inside, after a body hit theground a few feet away. The NYPD ESU Sergeant decided to stay by the door with one of hisofficers to make sure all his personnel had exited bu ildin g one.As we made our way across the plaza level inside building six walking towards West Street, again there was a tremendous explosion and everything started coming down on top of us.Having nowhere to run we went against an inner wall. At this point we were being pelted withdebris and I feared I wo uldn 't make it out. A fte r a wh ile it subsided, b ut it was pitch bla ck and Icouldn ' t see however I was able to stand up. I started hearing th e other officers saying are you allright but I could stil l not see anything. M y eyes, nose, mouth and ears were filled with thatbrown dust, I was able to spit most of it out and get on my facepiece and get some air. After wh at seemed like a long tim e we could see that in front of us there were f i res burnin g. Andwe did not think we could get out that way which was the West St. side of building s ix . Westarted to go back the way we entered, but were unable because the f loor had caved in. OneOfficer from N Y P D was calling for assistance on their radio, as we tried to figure out how wewere going to get out. After a period in t ime, I don't know how long, we started to see day l ighttoward th e West St. side of build ing six. The fires that prevented us before had dwindled downand we were able to climb out onto the balcony of bui ld ing six facing West St. There was aconstruction ladder that was left there, which enabled us to climb down one level, an d after a fewminutes another ladder was put in place by responding NYPD ESU, which got us down ontoWest Street. An N Y P D O f f i c e r was taking our names as we exited. I proceeded north on West. St. lookingfor the PAPD Command Post . After a block or two I was stopped by an amb ulance crew and ledto the back of an ambulance. They took my Blood Pressure an d tried to irrigate my eyes. N otfeeling the injuries to my feet, I proceeded north on West St. were I met O ff icer Pedro Batistaand Off icer Beatty. Seeing that we w ere in need of M edical attention O ff icer Batista placed us inanother ambulance. Myself an d Officer Beatty were transported to Cab rini Hospital on East 19 thSt. accompanied by Officer Arnette. After being decontaminated we were treated for our injuries. It was at the hospital that Off icerArnette informed me that both towers of the W TC had come dow n. Up to this point I thou ght itwas bombs that had gone off and the bui lding s were st i l l s tanding. I also learned that I had fourbroken toes, which I never felt.

A few days later I was contacted by Tim Farrell a retired NY PD off icer ( who wastrying to get information on missing NYPD Officers. I learned that th e Sergeant and policeofficer (Sgt. Mike Curtain, P.O. John De lari) w ho stayed by the door of bui lding six weremissing.PA O fficers Beatty and Hall should be com m ended for their unse lfish actions and their resolve toget a job done u nder impossible condit ions. They are both a credit to the Port Au thority Pol icean d uphold the finest traditions of this department . I am also proud and grateful to have servedwith them on that September m orning.I would also like to commend Officers Batista and Arnette fo r coming to the aid of their brotherOfficers. Officer Batista saw we needed aid even though w e thought w e were fine. And OfficerArnette, accompanied us and saw that w e were taken care of at the hospital.
