Disrupt these retrograde industry assumptions -

• Schools are comprised of similarly-operated classroom units in which one adult delivers content to a room of between 12 and 34 students, six hours and twenty minutes per day, 180 days per year

• Adults dictate a course of study to children, who receive and process information for adults to evaluate

• As part of one job, teachers manage classroom organizations; research and deliver content; differentiate the course of study according to student needs; assess performance; and deliver feedback

• Special education students should be grouped and planned for according to class size requirements

What is the Innovation Zone?

• The Division of Strategy & Innovation (DSI) is recruiting schools to pilot a set of innovations that accelerate student learning toward enhanced college and career readiness:> innovations in instructional delivery> innovations that extend and improve instructional time> innovations in school and classroom staffing models that maximize the

effectiveness of principals and teachers

• In the initial phase of pilot innovations, DSI will propose innovation categories and provide design, implementation, technology and program support.

• In addition, DSI will work with the SED in the hopes of securing relevant policy waivers. DSI intends to study the pilot innovations with rigor so that their potential for scale is evaluated. As the Innovation Zone expands, DSI will look to networks and schools to propose and incubate innovations that can be supported centrally.

Innovation Category: New York Virtual SchoolThe DOE is working to develop a virtual high school. In the pilot year there will be two opportunities for schools.

Option 1: Integrating online courses

Schools will offer online courses for initial credit, credit recovery, or Advanced Placement to enhance the learning experience of traditional face-to-face classes.

Option 2: Blended school model

Schools will pilot a new model of organization and culture that is a blend of face to face and online learning, transforming the way that curriculum is delivered (up to a third of coursework delivered online), staff are organized, and time is scheduled , creating a personalized, digital learning environment.

Innovation Category: Time & Staffing Pilots

NYC DOE is promoting two related innovations with respect to scheduling and staffing:

Option 1: Time and Staffing Management Pilots

Schools propose new time and staffing models that extend learning time and allow for more individualized learning paths for students.

• Participating schools will receive support from expert schedulers and designers.• Participating schools will support the development of the scheduling tool to create

more flexible, individualized time and staffing capabilities.

Option 2: New Time and Staffing School Models

Expand an existing school model, Generation Schools, that redistributes teacher and student time in order to:

• Extend annual student learning time using existing resources• Increase collaborative planning and assessment time• Provide opportunities for a cycle of “intensive courses” (project-based or out of

school learning)

Innovation Category: Integrated Learning Systems

• Integrated Learning Systems (ILSs) feature computer-based learning activities and assessments that teachers use to develop and assign individually-tailored learning plans. As students work through their assigned learning activities on the computer, the ILS reports on progress in real-time, enabling teachers to quickly identify trends, diagnose student learning needs, and focus their efforts on the topics students find most challenging.

• The NYC DOE is proposing a 2-year pilot program to rigorously evaluate and compare the effectiveness of high-potential ILSs through a random assignment process at the 3-5 and 6-8 grade level in ELA and Math.

• Schools participating in this pilot will have the opportunity to implement an innovative learning system and contribute to its design & improvement.
