Dear Friends: 2013 has arrived and our Annual Meeting is just around the corner. I am very pleased to see the wonderful scientific and social programs that have been arranged. Besides having an exceptional program planned, Chicago is also a great city to visit. We expect an extraordinary meeting, and look forward to seeing the endocrine lineage together along with their families. In harmony with our theme “Quality and Outreach” several scientific activities have been scheduled. The Collaborative Endocrine Surgery Quality Improvement Program (CESQIP) will be introduced in a panel where we will be able to learn the many advantages that the platform provides. Our invited lecturer, Dr. Anders Bergenfelz, will present the European experience with the Program of Quality Control in Clinical Practice and Postgraduate Education in Endocrine Surgery; and will lead us through the process of board certification for fellows in Endocrine Surgery throughout mock oral exams. Office of the Secretary-TreasurerNancy D. Perrier, MD

Happy 2013 to all.

We remain busy and are excited about our enlarging membership, electronic updates, extension of our official society liasons and much more. We have tried to respond to the requests and needs that you have voiced and made it the priority to be proactive and lead our organization’s directional long-term plans. Our job has been made easy with the help of Nonie Lowry and her staff, the advice of past officers and hard work of our committees, in particular the chairs of all the subcommittees and the exceptional leadership of the officers, especially our president Miguel Herrera. In a nutshell, over the past nine months the AAES has: • passed a financial audit, • legally transitioned the Foundation as a separate entity,• drafted an endorsement policy• moved forward with plans to robustly enhance the patient educational aspect of the website.

In addition, the society is excited about setting up the Collaborative Endocrine Surgery Quality Improvement Program (CESQIP) which should qualify the ACS maintenance of certification requirements. The program committee is planning a wonderful agenda for the spring meeting with additions such as:

• A nurse practioner’s luncheon• A new member’s breakfast• Initiation of an audience /response participation system. The fellowship application process has gone electronic, workshops designed for the members (such as the US Certification Course) are available and mock oral examinations will occur to enhance the education of each and every one of us and to help lead us towards accreditation. P.S. Please update your membership details online and be on the lookout for Twitter live feeds during the meeting. I remain grateful for the opportunity to serve you and trust that you will let this office know if we may be of help to you at anytime. See you in Chicago!

Membership CommitteeCarmen C. Solorzano, MD

I want to congratulate our past President, Ashok Shaha for sponsoring the most membership applications in 2012. At second place and tied came past Presidents Douglas Evans and Geoffrey Thompson and our Secretary-Treasurer, Nancy Perrier.

Over the past 12 months the membership committee has been diligently reviewing applications for resident/fellow and candidate membership. The applications for these two membership categories are approved by the committee throughout the year. Fifteen resident/fellows and 13 candidate members have already joined the AAES ranks. If you are a resident or fellow interested in endocrine surgery be sure to join the AAES today!

January 31, 2013 marked the deadline to submit applications for Active, Allied Health and Corresponding membership. These applications will be presented to the executive council for approval. Names of applicants recommended for election are then voted at our annual business meeting in Chicago. Successful applicants will be introduced at our 2014 annual meeting in Boston. Finally, and new this year, the AAES will hold an invitation only breakfast in honor of our newly elected Active, Allied and Corresponding members (more information later).

In September 2012, the AAES Fellowship Match successfully matched 21 outstanding candidates to the 19 Endocrine Surgery programs across the United States and Canada. Congratulations to the incoming Class of 2014!

We continue to move forward with AAES accreditation for fellowship programs. A Fellowship Accreditation committee, chaired by William B. Inabnet, MD, has been assembled and will review existing fellowship programs for formal AAES accreditation; programs interested in instituting Endocrine Surgery fellowships at their institution will also require approval by the Fellowship Accreditation Committee and the AAES Council.

Lastly, the AAES is sponsoring the 2013 Match for clinical fellowship positions starting July 2014. This year the application process has moved to a centralized, electronic platform, which will be open from February 1 – June 1, 2013.

Education & Research CommitteeSareh Parangi, MD

Members of the committee include Drs. Parangi (chair) Sippel, Miller, Milas, Sturgeon, Olson and two new members Drs. Grover and Velazquez. Drs. Gauger, and McLeod have completed their terms and we thank them for their service. The ERC aims to continue improving the dissemination of educational and research information to patients, healthcare providers and AAES members. Our initiatives involve collaborative efforts with the AAES Foundation on fundraising and with the IT Committee on the contents of the AAES patient education website.

New initiatives include the addition of a “frequently asked questions” section to the AAES web portal that will include over 100 FAQ that patients ask with clear, concise answers. The committee thanks the AAES fellows who helped prepare these answers while participating in their busy clinical fellowships.

Drs. Milas and Sturgeon have put a tremendous amount of effort into delivering the first ever AAES Ultrasound for Surgeons Course which is based on the hugely popular exported American College of Surgeons Head and Neck Ultrasound Course, but also includes additional informative modules on laryngeal ultrasound, US-guided ethanol ablation, US predictors of malignancy, elastography and molecular testing of nodules in conjunction with US. The AAES Ultrasound course is set to be taught on Saturday April 13, 2013 by an excellent cadre of ACS National Ultrasound Faculty and will deliver the very best education in surgeon performed ultrasound. The committee has also sent out a short member survey to gauge the level of interest in the addition of a research platform to the AAES web portal to aid members in coordinating basic science and clinical research endeavors.

One of the main initiatives of the ERC has been to support fully the mission of the Paul LoGerfo Research Award to enrich the discipline of endocrine surgery and to advance the careers of junior investigators interested in a career in academic endocrine surgery. The Paul LoGerfo Educational Research Fund was developed to honor the life of Paul LoGerfo who made numerous major contributions to the field of endocrine surgery. Dr LoGerfo passed away from malignant melanoma in 2003 during the peak of his career while serving as President of the AAES. Only surgeons who completed residency or fellowship training within 5 academic years previous to the year of application are eligible to apply for the award. Dr. Daniel Ruan was chosen as the 2012-2013 Paul LoGerfo Research Award for his study proposal “Overcoming Medullary Thyroid Cancer Resistance to Vandetanib: Characterization of the Mechanisms that Drive EGFR Coactivation”. We look forward to his presentation about progress on this interesting project at the 2013 AAES meeting in Chicago.

We welcome proposals in a wide spectrum of research topics including surgical ethics, education, epidemiology, biostatistics, health care delivery, as well as clinical or basic science research pertaining to the field of endocrine surgery. These funds may be used for bridge or supplemental funding for research protocols with existing funding. For more information or to obtain a Paul LoGerfo Research Award application, please refer to the AAES website (www.endocrinesurgery.org) under the tab “Research and Education”. The annual deadline for proposals is February 15.

Program CommitteeMark S. Cohen, MD

On behalf of this year’s program committee, I would like to welcome you to the 2013 AAES Annual Meeting and provide a brief overview of the exciting and cutting-edge scientific program we have planned for Chicago. This year we received over 200 high quality abstracts covering the entire breadth of endocrine surgery practice and science. In order to create a program showcasing the best in endocrine surgery, we expanded the program committee with senior ad-hoc members to generate a total of 17 reviewers, each of whom worked very hard and reviewed every abstract to provide the fairest grading process to date. As such the program includes the top 40 oral podium presentations and 50 poster presentations. New this year, the posters will be judged by the past-presidents during our Sunday morning Poster Walk-Around Session on April 14th. The top 5 scoring posters will be announced at the President’s Gala Dinner and will be invited to give oral talks during a special Oral Poster Session on Tuesday April 16th at 11am. The top scoring oral poster will be announced at the conclusion of the meeting on Tuesday. In addition to 8 outstanding scientific oral sessions that include several international presenters, this year’s meeting highlights: the American College of Surgeons

Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound Skills-Oriented Course on Saturday April 13th, a session on CESQIP and Outcomes in Endocrine Surgery led by Dr. Barry Inabnet, Historical Lectures, organized by President Herrera, our annual Interesting Case Session led by our Vice-President, Dr. Allan Siperstein, an exciting lecture on “Quality Control in Clinical Practice and Postgraduate Education in Endocrine Surgery” by Dr. Anders Bergenfelz, and concluding on Tuesday with our Hot-Topic panel session entitled “AAES Panel Session: The Patient’s Voice – Is There More to be Heard?” led by Dr. Sally Carty, followed by a Mock-Oral Exam session for our endocrine surgery fellows and residents. We will also be piloting through the IT committee an interactive audience response system to elicit feedback from the membership on controversial topics throughout the meeting. It has truly been an honor to serve as Program Committee Chair this year and I would like to thank Drs. Herrera, Perrier and all of the members of the Program Committee for their dedication and hard work to generate a well-balanced, high-caliber scientific program I am sure you will enjoy. I look forward to seeing you in Chicago in April.

AAES Foundation Geoffrey B. Thompson, MD

The purpose of the AAES Foundation is to promote research and education in the field of endocrine surgery, to advance the science and art of endocrine surgery, and to aid in maintaining the highest practice standards. We hope that you will all participate in our fundraising activities. Your gift will assist to enrich and extend the horizons of endocrine surgery with annual grants awarded to applicants who share our common purpose. We encourage each member to give a suggested donation of at least $1,000 during the course of membership. To date, we have had pledges of $10,000 from all seven members of the board of directors of the AAES Foundation, as well as three $10,000 pledges from AAES members. This $100,000 coupled with money that presently exists in the foundation and LoGerfo Fund totals well over $300,000. Our ultimate goal remains to raise one million dollars in donations and pledges over the course of the next few years.

Pledges can be in the form of either a direct monetary donation or pledges over time, and can also be figured in as part of your updated estate plans. Donations to the foundation (a separate 501(c)3) are tax deductible for those living and working in the United States under section 170 of the internal revenue code.

Going forward, the Paul LoGerfo Fund will be incorporated into the AAES Foundation as the annual Paul LoGerfo Award. For those pledging $10,000 or more, the individual(s) will be honored as a Norman W. Thompson Fellow. Those giving up to $9,999 will be listed as major contributors to the Foundation, and those giving up to $999 will be noted as contributors. As your donations accumulate, opportunities will exist for you to become a Norman W. Thompson Fellow. We think this is a great way to honor our founder, colleague, and dear friend. He was very flattered by this honor and wishes to thank everyone in the AAES. I am very excited to note that Dr. Thompson, himself, wanted very much to join this club and has recently given $10,000 to the Foundation. We are in the process of reviewing all of the previous donations to the Paul LoGerfo fund, so as to apply these appropriately to the existing level of giving. It has taken a tremendous effort on the part of everyone to get this Foundation up and rolling. We do hope that you will participate and donate generously. If you have questions regarding donations, please feel free to contact me or the AAES Foundation office for further details.

AMA UpdateSteven DeJong, MD

Aloha AAES Colleagues:

As your AAES representative to the Endocrine Section Council of the AMA, I attended the Interim meeting of the AMA in Honolulu, Hawaii from November 9-12, 2012. The Endocrine Section Council meeting was held on Saturday the 9th and also included representatives from AACE, The Endocrine Society, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. In addition to the specific endocrinology, political and socioeconomic issues and resolutions brought forward for AMA approval, we discussed how our organizations could partner with each other to achieve common goals through educational programs, quality initiatives to standardize care, web links, and overlapping meetings. The AAES can be more visible and active in these

organizations and become collaborative partners in the multidisciplinary treatment of patients with endocrine surgical disease. The larger AMA Interim meeting focused on improving health outcomes, reducing health care costs, accelerating change in medical education, and providing physician tools to improve their practice efficiency and their professional satisfaction. It was a very interesting and productive experience to build future relationships between the AAES and many other organizations. I’ll provide more updates from the next meeting of the AMA in June of 2013 which will be held a bit closer to home in Chicago. We may begin to explore how the AAES could possibly become a recognized specialty society of the AMA. Please contact me with any issues you would like raised in this forum.

CESQIP Update William B. Inabnet III, MD

The AAES is very pleased to announce a new quality assurance initiative called CESQIP which stands for the Collaborative Endocrine Surgery Quality Improvement Program. The corner stone of CESQIP is a state of the art QA registry that will permit the tracking outcomes and will provide benchmarking for the promotion of science, provisions for maintenance of certification by the American Board of Surgery and the lattice structure for national and international collaboration. For CESQIP, the AAES partnered with Drs. John Birkmeyer and Justin Dimick, both leaders in the field of outcomes reporting and co-founders of ArborMetrix. The CESQIP Committee and ArborMetrix have developed a ground up, cloud-based registry and reporting system that will measure endocrine surgery performance, including thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and neuroendocrine tumor procedures. The CESQIP registry will provide participating AAES members with actionable intelligence that automatically adjusts performance measures for risk and severity in real-time. Participants will also benefit from a broad range of evidence-based insights that will offer the opportunity to navigate from single site/surgeon registries to a national value-based outcomes reporting system.

CESQIP aims to refine and incorporate best practices for endocrine surgery, making it easier for AAES members to comply with Part 4 of the American Board of Surgery’s Maintenance of Certification (MOC) which requires surgeons to evaluate how well their practice is performing. The timing of the roll out of CESQIP is optimal, as the American Board of Surgery is beginning to reach out to surgical societies to encourage the development of outcomes tracking programs. As stated in the most recent American Board of Surgery newsletter, “the most important component of MOC is Part 4 which is where ‘the rubber meets the road’ as practice performance is why patients seek our expertise.” Participating CESQIP clinical sites for the initial roll out include Duke University, MD Anderson, Mount Sinai Medical Center, National Institute of Health, National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition (Mexico City), University of Calgary, University of Michigan, University of Pittsburgh, University of Wisconsin at Madison and Vanderbilt. CESQIP will be available to all AAES members in July 2013. To learn more, please attend the special, 1-hour outcomes session Sunday morning at the annual AAES meeting in Chicago.

Laryngoscopy Panel Sally E. Carty, MD

This year’s annual meeting will feature an AAES Panel Session entitled: The Patient’s Voice – Is There More to be Heard? This 1-hour session will feature esteemed panelists with considerable breadth, depth and variety of expertise, who will discuss the current data about perioperative laryngoscopy. Topics will include the indications, alternatives, conduct, costs, techniques, and outcomes of laryngoscopy. The panelist presentations will include practice recommendations plus the hot-off-the-press results of the recent AAES member survey on laryngoscopy. Attendees will have an opportunity to submit written questions to the panel. We expect a lively discussion and hope to see you there! ATA UpdateElectron Kebebew, MD

Members of the American Association of Endocrine Surgeons remain active in the American Thyroid Association (ATA). In 2012, two fellows from Endocrine Surgery Fellowship programs were included in the Endocrine Fellows’ Conference (EFC) which was established and is supported by the University of Colorado and Chip Ridgway through educational grants. The ATA works with the University of Colorado EFC to coordinate funding Fellows to attend. The ATA Educational Fellows Track (chaired by ATA leaders) welcome the fellows and provide an educational track focused on key topics of interest to clinical, basic and surgical fellows. There were four surgical fellows (two Endocrine Surgery and two Head and Neck) selected in 2012. This opportunity will be available for the upcoming ATA 2013 annual meeting in Puerto Rico, so please nominate your fellows currently in your fellowship program to participate in this terrific educational activity.

Summary Of The New York Masters Course William B. Inabnet, III, MD & Herbert Chen, MD

Drawing upon the success of the 1st Annual New York Endocrine Surgery Course, which was hosted by Mount Sinai Medical Center in early December 2012, an annual Masters in Endocrine Surgery Course series is being organized and supported by the American Cancer Society. This will be a series of 4 courses occurring in 4 different parts of the USA. Each course will draw upon local expertise with select guest faculty participation from outside the region. This CME activity will cover all aspects of endocrine surgery in detail, including disorders of the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pancreas as well as neuroendocrine tumors. Hosting locations and institutions include:

1. Houston (September 6–7, 2013) MD Anderson/Methodist Institute for Technology, Innovation and Education (Nancy Perrier and Barbara Bass)

American College of Surgeons Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound Skills-Oriented Course

Saturday, April 137:30am – 5:00pm

Advanced Topic LecturesDidactic Only

10:30am – 1:15pm

Due to a rare collaborative opportunity with ACS, this outstanding pre-meeting course is an exciting opportunity to work one-on-one with experienced AAES leaders and faculty in thyroid and parathyroid techniques and applications. The objective of the course is to introduce the practicing physician to the basics of office-based US exam of the thyroid and parathyroid glands and related pathology. The course covers the principles and physics of US, neck anatomy, US evaluation of thyroid and parathyroid disease, and cervical lymph node mapping. Participants in the full course may also attend the Advanced Topics lectures (see below). In addition, a skills station lab will allow participants to learn US-guided FNA techniques using phantom models and to perform supervised US evaluation of patient volunteers with thyroid and parathyroid pathology. The full course grants American College of Surgeons certification in thyroid and parathyroid ultrasound.

COURSE CHAIRSCord Sturgeon, MDNorthwestern University Mira M. Milas, MDOregon Health & Sciences University

There is a pre-requisite to attend the full course. Participants must contact the ACS directly at www.acs-resource.org to purchase the CD-rom course: Ultrasound for Surgeons: A Basic Course, 2nd Edition. The CD takes approximately 4 hours to complete and carries 4.0 hrs of CME credit. Successful completion of this CD is required prior to the AAES Ultrasound Course. The day-long ultrasound course at AAES entails attendance of both basic and advanced didactic lectures and the hands-on skills lab. The course registration fee already includes the Advanced Ultrasound lectures. Participants take a computer-based pre-test and post-test. Successful completion of the course, the tests and course evaluation leads to ACS Certification in Thyroid and Parathyroid Ultrasound and a total of 7.0 hrs CME. There is no pre-requisite to register for “Advanced Topics in Diagnostic and Interventional Ultrasound of the Head and Neck”. This didactic-only portion of the course does not involve verification of skills from the ACS. It is ideal for more experienced sonographers interested to hear about US-guided FNA, ethanol ablation, US predictors of thyroid malignancy, laryngeal US to assess vocal cord mobility, molecular testing in conjunction with US, establishing office-based US practice/billing, and see a live US demonstration.
