Cotham Co-operative Academy Forum

We started with a shadow forum in March 2013 which spent the rest of the academic year establishing protocols, communication channels and electing a chair for the next academic year. We then held elections in October 2013 to try and get to the full complement as stated in the articles. Current membership:

• 12 staff• 12 parents• 5 community• 12 students• 1 alumni

Meetings are held 6 times a year. Two governors are always present along with the Head teacher

Cotham Co Op Forum VisionOur forum is a group of elected people who represent everyone connected to

the school.We listen, understand and collect your views and opinions. We then use our powerful influence to make Cotham

better for everyone

How does the forum work?

Constituency groups meet independently between forum meetings to decide what will go to the forumRecommendation are made to go to either the school or the GB.Very clear communications channels have been established to make sure this is a democratic process. Some examples: • the school has invested in a communication strategy after comments that we

were not effective and timely in our communications, internally and externally. • Homophobia has been raised by students and assemblies and lessons have been developed to address this. • The staff group are looking at priority admission for staff children • Parents are gathering information about homework • The summer Fiesta attracted 600 people from all constituencies and a great

many from our community and alumni groups

HOW DOES IT LINK WITH THE GOVERNING BODY?

• A small sub group meets every term• Formal report at every governors’ meeting• Governors at each forum meeting• Currently working on how to develop this – how

does the Academy Development Plan sit with the SIP

• Developing key areas for discussion over the academic year to help give focus.

What are the benefits?

• Enhanced the ethos of the school• A rising trend of achievement• Students: Developed real leadership and involvement at all

levels• Staff: allowed a much more equitable school – support staff

have a much greater influence• Parents – a growing sense of self help rather than over

reliance on the school• Governors – A more holistic view of the school and a

developing understanding of the sphere of influence• Provides a ‘second chamber’
