ALL THINGS ONION CREEK
L E G E N D O N I O N C R E E K C L U B
Jan - Feb 2017
From the Manager Dear Members,
Happy New Year! We are so excited about the many happenings going on at the Club. First off an
update on the new Legends Grill and Legends Lounge. Construction has been delayed due to the
permitting process. We believe we are close to satisfying all the requirements needed to be granted the
permits necessary to complete the project. The delays are very frustrating as we want to open as soon as
possible. The target date is April/May on the opening of the new facility. Chef Tony is gearing up for
the opening as well and will offer a great grill and bar menu for you to revel in. Lee Kyle has been
grooming the current restaurant staff in the service area with a noticeable improvement in attention to detail. The convenience in
location of the new facility to the course and courts will make your experience at the Club much more enjoyable. The current
Clubhouse will continue to be available for special functions and parties.
We have a fun schedule of events coming up this year for you to participate in. We are offering events for all ages. Some of the
events include Chef tastings, Girls Night Out, Steaks and Stogies, Prime Rib Night, Bubbles and Brunch, Holiday Buffets, Sinatra
Night, Comedy Night, Trivia, Bingo, Kids Crafts, Petting Zoo, Summer Camps, Tennis and Golf Camps, Fitness Open House, Pool
Barbeques, Tunes in June, Summer Games, Wine Tastings, Crawfish Boil, Friday Night Lights including Golf and Tennis,
Halloween Hayride, Santa’s Workshop, New Year’s Eve Party, and many more.
Now that we have all 27 holes open including the new Short Game Practice facility you have many options to enjoy a round of golf.
Whether it be a full 18 holes, a quick nine on the Original Front, the new par 3 nine on the Original Front, or hone your skills at the
Short Game Practice area, we have many options to choose from. Come try out our complimentary clinics for all ages and skill
levels that we offer on a weekly basis. The clinics are a great way to develop your game and to meet your fellow Members.
Our new state of the art Fitness Center has been overwhelmingly well received. If you have not had a chance to visit or use the
Fitness Center please stop by and check it out. Our staff is very well trained to offer you a workout schedule that fits your needs. In
addition to the Fitness Center we have weekly complimentary classes held in the Fitness Studio from Yoga to low impact and high
intensity sessions.
Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Club soon and wishing you a fun filled 2017.
Sincerely,
John Ferguson
General Manager

Green Committee
During these winter months, Ryan and his staff have been busy spraying fungicide to control existing weeds, applying pre-emergents
to control the development of Poa Annua, applying treatments for fire ants, and fixing water leaks, in addition to the normal daily
maintenance that is necessary to keep the course in very good playable condition .
Please DO NOT drive past the signs that direct you to return to the cart path. Please protect the course by following the cart traffic
signage.
Please fill your divots with sand—whether on the tee boxes or in the fairways--and repair any ball marks you see on the greens. It
only takes a few seconds to repair divots and/or ball marks and these few seconds will pay great dividends in course playability and
appearance.
As always, if you have any questions about the course, please ask a Green Committee member. If we don’t have the answer, we will
get an answer for you.

OCCLA continued the 2016-17 year in November with a visit by Shanny Lott, an Austin artist and philanthropist. Shanny was charming and
kept all of us spell-bound while she related stories of her art and her artistic experiences in Austin. She also donated a framed, matted print on
fine art paper to be awarded in a drawing benefitting our scholarship fund. The print, “Aloha Agave,” drew lots of interest and raised over
$400.00. Marlene Fleshman was the lucky winner.
Then on December 10th OCCLA hosted our annual Christmas Dance at the club. Cathy Culler with
the assistance of Suzanne Eisenhauer turned the club into a glittering holiday setting for the music of
the Texas Heatwave, a new dance band found by our president, Pat Rodgers. With shinning
candelabras and sparkling silver, everyone enjoyed a delicious steak dinner then danced the night
away.
Continuing the festivities of the season, December 15th was our annual Christmas luncheon and home
tour. The holiday mood was set by Mariachi Los Gallos whose lively music during lunch put us in the
mood for touring three Onion Creek homes all decked out for celebrating. Pam Laine, Phyllis Stolp
and Suzanne Eisenhauer opened their homes for us to admire their trees, decorations and special
Christmas collections. Champagne, snowmen and needlepoint were things we’ll long remember about these special
houses.
And we have more planned for the new year:
On January 10th Elvis is making a back to earth tour at our Club to raise money for our Scholarship Fund. For a
$10.00 entry fee (to defray Elvis’ travel expenses) you can enjoy tapas, drinks and an intriguing White Elephant
silent auction. Come at 5:30 PM and invite your neighbor to see how we kick the over the winter doldrums. To help
with the silent auction, clean out your cabinets and closets and take your items to Sandy Combs’ home at 10027 Wild
Dunes. Please call or text 512-694-3610 before you come.
And in January our luncheon will feature Cheryl Mebane who founded Paris
du Jour for women seeking small group Paris travel. On one of her tours a
traveler has the opportunity to learn about French culture through the
hospitality of French hosts and hostesses in private home settings. This
promises to be interesting!
On March 4th from 6 to 11 PM we will host a County & Western dinner and dance at the club featuring Lonnie Key and the Texas Connections.
And Wednesday, March 29th, we’re planning a bus trip to Marburger Farms at Round Top. The bus will leave from the club parking lot at 8:30
AM, and cost $50.00. Join us for a great shopping adventure.
Onion Creek Club Ladies Association Joy De Laveaga

Bridge Association
Onion Creek Club Bridge Association celebrates
30 years in 2017! Whether one favors the traditional 30thAnniversary “Pearl”, or the modern 30th Anniversary
“Diamond”, this is a milestone for OCCBA and for Onion Creek Club. Observing a “30th”
Anniversary is very appropriate, because “pearls and diamonds” and “diamonds and pearls” describe the bridge membership and its’
leaders over these past 30 years. In 1987, a small group of players organized the Association, established the By-Laws, and elected
Inez Felder as the first President. Today, the names of the Past Presidents read like a “Who’s Who” at Onion Creek. Take a moment
to read the first page of any Directory to refresh your history of the group. Each President’s influence and leadership has contributed
to the culture of the Bridge Club.
Currently, Jill Brown serves as President to a membership that has grown over the years. On behalf of Jill and the Board, she extends
a thank you to members for their year round participation. It has been a great satisfaction to see players forge ahead to improve their
games, and to see partnerships and friendships develop that strengthen the bridge play at Onion Creek Club.
*** Make plans to attend and celebrate the OCCBA Special Event “30th Anniversary” Luncheon/Bridge Tournament,

Points to Remember…Featured in Loma Warren’s Membership Directory, 2009-2010.
With 13 or more points, I’m required to speak, and mention a suit that is not very weak.
With 5 cards or longer, I need not be cute; I merely will open with one of that suit.
But with a four-card major…Ah ha, there’s the rub…
I know I must open, so I’ll just say one club (or one diamond).
With 15-17, one no-trump will do; and with 20 or more, I’ll open with two.
When the opponents have opened, my back’s to the wall. With good points and length (5), I must overcall.
My partner has opened, and I’m in a fix, because I must pass with less points than six.
But, if I can count points from six to ten, I must respond once, but perhaps not again.
Now 11–12 points are certainly nice; I’ll plan to respond, not once, but twice.
With 13 or more points, I’m truly to blame if I let the bid end prior to game.
With less than 13 and 6 in a suit, I bid a Weak 2 or else get the boot.
My partner does not dare to reply with less than 16, but then a game we must try.
Alas, with 22 or more points in my hand, I must open 2 clubs, and that’s a demand!
With 7 points or less, “2 diamonds” partner will say; we’ll just find our suit and bid game today.”
But, with eight or more points, partner begins to think: Oh, once there’s a fit, a slam’s on the brink!

The 2016 Golf Season is nearing an end with only the President's Choice Tournament remaining!!! According to President Mike
O'Brien, the tournament will be one to be remembered. We have our last breakfast meeting the morning of the tournament at 7am
Dec 10th. This season has been very successful. Our membership has grown, however, the participation is lower than expected.
Let's Play More Golf!
The Founders Cup individual 2 day tournament was the last tournament of 2016 with points being awarded to GOY for the winners.
At the start of the tournament the race was tight with Perry Wooley having a one point lead over Brice Custer. Both players finished
with a net score of 137. Together they won their prospective flights, thus leaving Perry as the Golfer of the Year. Congratulations to
both players for an outstanding 2016 tournament season.
The 2016 MGA Cup is in the books. Co-Captains Don Bledsoe and Stu Osantowski defended the title against this year's GOY -
Perry Wooley and his team with a score of 29 1/2 - 25 1/2. Their team took a commanding lead after the first day 12 1/2 - 9 1/2 and
added to the lead on the final day 17-16. They will again get to keep their team in tact to be challenged by next year's GOY winner as
the opposing captain. This is a new tradition that the MGA has taken to make the MGA cup more interesting for future years to
come.
The 2016 Board has been busy setting the 2017 Golf Calendar and next year's budget. They are both ready for approval at the next
breakfast meeting.
Nominating Chair General Bill Welch and his committee has brought forth the following nominations for the 2017 MGA Board of
Directors:
The Board is currently soliciting nominations for the glorious "McShank" award. If you have any recommendations please forward
them to a current board member.

Members were generous to this year’s charity, SafePlace, donating $1,175. In addition, members donated canned goods for Austin Area
Food Bank.
The WGA website is being transitioned to the OCC website. Look there for information regarding the WGA calendar, General
Meetings, and special events.
Being President of the WGA was certainly a jump start to really get involved with an
extraordinary organization. It all started with being the Vice President - now that job is a wake up
call!!! As the new kid on the block, little" (literally) did I know what a well organized
organization the WGA is. My gosh, it parallels any non-profit in which I have been involved.
Everyone was willing to be a part of it -recruited a great board and tournament chairs.
This has been an opportunity to meet a lot of wonderful people who have been part of this
organization. Thank you!
Susan Adair (aka: Past President)
