Opening day allows students to start year off on right foot

OHS started the 2014-15 school year on August 18 with a shortened schedule and informational sessions.

Following the opening speech by the principal, the students heard presenta-tions by the school counselor, assistant principal, technology director, librarian, social worker, and local chief of police.

The students then went to each class for 20 minutes and finished the day with games on the football field.

Lunches may be purchased by completing a payment through E-Pay on our website (www.oak-wood.k12.il.us) or sending mon-ey with your child to the school.

If you are sending a check, please put the child’s name on the memo line of the check. Checks should be made payable to “Oak-wood High School.”

We encourage payment by check when sending money to the school because it serves as a dated record of payment.

If you must send cash, please

enclose it in an envelope with the student’s first and last name on the envelope.

Free and reduced lunch appli-cations will be available at reg-istration and in the school office throughout the school year.

    FOOD SERVICE CHARGESDaily $ 2.55Weekly $12.75Extra Milk $ 0.30

Any extra food will be sold to students in the second lunch if they have money available in their account.

The OHS Booster Club is ready to begin another year supporting the ath-letic teams and they could use your support.

The group meets just once a month, at 7 p.m. on the last Wednesday of the month in the high school library.

In the past few years they have provided assis-tance to each of the school’s programs.

They have bought golf bags, re-surfaced the soccer field, helped purchase the gym score-boards, purchased training equipment for foot-ball, and uniforms for softball, patches for cham-pionships, pins for letterwinners, among many other things.

This is a worthwhile group that could use your help.

SWAP Day is set for September 17

Parents will get the chance to attend school for their students on September 17, an 11:30 dismissal day. This is called SWAP Day.

This day pro-vides parents the opportunity to see exactly what their students do during a normal day of school.

Only one parent is needed to attend, even for multiple children. They are encouraged to attend for the entire morning but must attend at least four class hours. If a parent attends, then the student is excused from attending on that day.

If a parent can not come, the ONLY acceptable substitutes are a grandparent or a sibling who graduated before 2010.

Parents are responsible for any homework due and taking any assign-ments to be done by students for the following day.

This will be the 37th annual SWAP day at OHS.

Along with the scrimmage there will also be a perfor-mance by the OHS cheerlead-ers and Comettes.

Aug. 25: Date for photo IDs

All underclassmen and staff will have their ID photos taken during Homeroom on August 25.

The photos are used for their identification cards as well as for publication in The Acorn.

Students should dress appro-priately for the photographs.

If a student is absent or is un-able to get their photo taken at that time, there will be a make-up day.

The photos will be taken this year by Sharon Richardson.

  • 4 Comet Courier 8-22-14It’s class ring time!

The freshmen will be able to or-der their Jostens class rings in Sep-tember.

There will be a meeting during Homeroom on September 15 for the freshmen.

Orders will be taken from 3 to 6 p.m. on Thu., Sept. 18, in the East Lobby. Parents are welcome to come in at that time and see samples and ask questions of the Jostens rep-resentatives.

Jostens would like to be able to send out information to freshmen parents via emails and mailings.

They would get this data from us but only with your approval.

They would only use this infor-mation four times:

1 -- Prior to the meeting with in-formation regarding deposits, order dates, and payments

2 -- After the order date, they will send out confirmation of the order and a reminder for those that did not order.

3 -- Notification of the delivery date and payment information

4 -- Last chance notification to order

If you want us to provide Jos-tens with this information, then contact the high school and we will put your name on their list.

No School on Monday, Sept. 1 -- Labor Day

Senior Karamon Samuel models his “pie in the face” as a result of a safety demonstra-tion in Ms. Cooper’s class.

The OHS Book Club will have their first meeting on Fri., Sept. 12, during Homeroom in the library.

The Book Club is open to anyone who loves books and loves to read. This is an opportunity to discuss a great book you’ve read recently, or hear from others about possible books to add to your reading list.

The Book Club encourages ev-eryone to come and meet new friends and learn about different people, different places, and differ-ent worlds.

The OHS librarians sponsor the book club and can help with pos-sible reading selections.

Listen for the announcements in Homeroom.
