MOMENTS IN TIME The History Channel • On Feb. 12, 1988, in the waning days of the Cold War, two

Soviet warships bump two U.S. Navy vessels in waters claimed

by the Soviet Union off the Crimean peninsula. A confrontation

was defused when the U.S. ships departed.

You’ve got a lot of choices. If getting out of bed in the morning is a chore and you’re not smiling on a regular basis, try another choice. ~Steven D. Woodhull (U.S. geologist, 1976-)

February 13 • 7pm • Wadsworth Auditorium The Hunts are an indie-folk band from the southlands of Chesapeake, Virginia. These seven brothers and sisters have a passion for creating compelling music and have combined one another’s gifts of writing, composing and musicianship to endeavor that. Stringed instruments

surrounded by enchanting harmonies and thrilling rhythms harken to an organic yet transcending sound.

Hello! My name is

Zillah . A Christmas addition to our

family, she is a 1 year-old purebred Border Collie. She is smart and athletic and likes to catch Frisbees and can throw balls back to you. Zillah also

loves to cuddle and get dressed up in her bandanas and always

tries to do a good job with rules. She once found my lost

car key at the Tonawanda Dog Park!

It has been over a year and this sweet doll is still waiting for

a family to call her own. Her name is Pumpkin but we call

her Punky Brewster. Just like Punky, she came to us with no family, but full of bubbly personality. She’s a stunner too with

her all-American good looks. Are you her forever family?

Why does anyone ever lie? The confidence man and other unscrupulous people tell lies to dupe their victims. Others may lie because the truth could be an admission of guilt. Still others lie because they do not want to hurt someone else’s feelings. Where telling the truth could mean humiliation and punishment, it takes character to avoid resorting to a lie.

We hate the ones to whom we have to lie because they’re in a position to force us to do something for which we hate ourselves. Our goal should be to live in such a way as to eliminate any situation where a lie is ever necessary.

Thoughtful families select a funeral director as they do a doctor or attorney. We would welcome a “get-acquainted” visit by you, in our office or in your home. Call us to schedule an appointment.

“Men hate those to whom they have to lie…”

EXCELLENCE IN SURGICAL CARE

Did you know that dental implants are frequently the best treatment option for replacing missing teeth? Rather than resting on the gum line like removable dentures, or using adjacent teeth as anchors like fixed bridges, dental implants are long-term replacements.

Thinking about dental implants?

To better serve our patients, we are now accepting Delta Dental, Guardian, Met Life and Blue Cross and Blue Shield dental plans.

Breakfast Pizza Put a healthy twist on pizza for a quick, satisfying breakfast kids and adults will love. Start with sliced naan or a whole wheat bagel. Toast to warm and add a smear of ricotta cheese. Then top with sliced tomatoes and sprinkle with a dash of fleur de sel and dried basil, if desired. If you prefer a sweeter pizza, skip the tomatoes and use sliced fruit instead. This tasty breakfast will fight hunger pangs straight until lunchtime.

Microwave Egg Scrambles Fresh eggs are nutritional powerhouses packed with protein and vitamins A, D and E. Microwave egg scrambles taste like an omelet without the cooking hassles. Simply crack an egg into a coffee cup, add a tablespoon of milk and beat until mixed. If desired, add extras like chopped onion, mushrooms and cheese. Microwave for 30 seconds, then stir and microwave for another 30 seconds until done.

Used Cars Starting at $1,995!

Extend the life of your vehicle: Pay attention to brake pads.

Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal.

Drive with care everyday

Do not race your car’s engine during start-up.This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine, especially if it’s cold outside.

Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of operation.

Warming the engine by letting it idle in the driveway is not a smart idea. The engine doesn’t operate at its peak temperature, resulting in incomplete fuel combustion, soot deposits on cylinder walls, oil contamination, and ultimately damaged components.

Put less strain on your engine and automatic transmission by shifting to neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine is still working to push the car even while it’s stopped.

Avoid driving at high speeds and accelerating quickly, especially when it’s very hot or very cold outside. Such driving behavior will result in more frequent repairs.

Extend the life of your tires with careful driving. Observe posted speed limits. Avoid fast starts, stops, and turns. Avoid potholes and objects on the road. Don’t run over curbs or hit the tire against the curb when parking. And, of course, don’t burn rubber.

When turning your steering wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left position for more than a few seconds. Doing so can damage the power-steering pump.

Consolidate your short driving trips. Most of the wear and tear — as well as the pollution your car generates — takes place in the first few minutes of driving. Doing several errands at once, during low traffic hours if possible, will keep your engine happier longer.

You are worried about seeing him spend his early years in doing nothing. What! Is it nothing to be happy? Nothing to skip, play, and run around all day long? Never in his life will he be so busy again.

~Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Emile, 1762

Kids Can Create a Tie-Dye Masterpiece

Here’s what you’ll need: • white cotton T-shirts or dresses • powder fabric dye in chosen colors • rubber bands • rubber gloves • water • buckets • large plastic bags

1. Mix the dye in buckets according to the package directions and set on the lawn for the least amount of mess from dripping.

2. Scrunch the fabric of your T-shirts or dresses in various locations and secure with rubber bands.

3. Then put on the rubber gloves and old clothing, where it won’t matter if it gets dye drips on it.

4. Dip the items into the dye color or colors of choice until the areas of the fabric are adequately colored.

5. Place the dyed clothing into individual plastic bags, seal and allow to set for 2 to 3 hours.

6. Once the colors have set, remove the rubber bands and allow the garments to dry flat.

7. Wash and dry the items.

* For less mess, put the dyes in plastic squeeze bottles and “draw” on patterns instead of using the traditional tie-dye method.

Explore the alternat ives to granite countertops

Granite has long been a popular countertop material for homeow ners looking to combine functionality w ith aesthetic appeal in their kitchens. But granite is no small investment, and homeow ners looking to refurbish their kitchens should know there are a multitude of countertop materials available to those w orking on a budget or those w ho simply w ant to give their kitchens a different look.

Solid w ood: Wood countertops create a w arm, homey interior. Butcher block counters are less expensive than granite and do not necessarily need to be ordered from a spec iality retailer. But w ood can stain and dent and can even burn w hen hot kitchenw are is placed atop it. Regular application of oil can help homeow ners maintain the appearance of their w ood counters for years to come.

M arble: M arble tends to be less expensive than granite w ithout sacrific ing aesthetic appeal. How ever, marble is softer and more porous than granite, so it can stain and be etched. Diligence in w iping aw ay spills, routine sealing and a gentle touch is necessary for those w ho choose marble countertops.

Soapstone: This is a natural stone composed mainly of mineral talc that gives the stone its smooth feel. Soapstone ranges from black to gray but can sometimes have a green shade to it. Other materials in the stone can produce veining. Although softer than granite, soapstone is still high-density and w ill hold up w ell. It’s impervious to stains and bacteria, and exposure to chemicals w ill not damage it.

Quartz: Quartz is a manufactured product made of stone aggregate and polymers compressed under high pressure. It has the look of natural stone but requires less w ork to maintain. Quartz has consistent colors and patterns and is a nonporous material, so it w ill not need routine sealing and resealing.

Glass: Glass countertops are back-painted, so homeow ners can order just about any color they w ant. Glass w ill be tempered, so it is safe and heat-resistant. Glass can scratch, though, so it is not as impervious as other materials.

Concrete: Concrete is another material that can be colored to match homeow ners’ w hims. Concrete is relatively inexpensive compared to other countertop materials, but it can crack or chip.

In a Daily Slump? Tips to Make Sure You Get a Good Night’s Sleep

(NewsUSA) - Do you find yourself fatigued and yawning throughout the day? A mid-afternoon slump coul d really be trying to tell you something -- it’s likely you aren’t getting enough sleep!

The average adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep per day to function properly. However, in a 200 5 health survey, 30 percent of adults nationwide reported getting only about six hours of sleep per day. For many adults, fatigue seems in evitable. In a 2002 study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, 37 percent of adults reported being so sleepy during the day that it inte rfered with their daily activities. Much of that lost sleep can be attributed to background noises.

“Background noise is a problem for people when they are sleeping,” said Dr. Rafael Pelayo, associate professor at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic at Stanford University School of Medicine.

A study by Consumer Reports found that sound machines are nearly as effective as prescription sleep medications, and more effective than over- the-counter sleep medications or aids, without the side-effects. Dr. Pelayo recommends the Sound+Sle ep Adaptive Sound Therapy Machine (www.soundofsleep.com) as part of a healthy sleep plan for people trying to achieve a better night’s sleep with minimal use of drugs.

“There are a lot of ‘dumb’ sound machines out there that just play constant noise in an attempt to c over up these disruptions,” says Dr. Pelayo. “The new Sound+Sleep responds to sudden background disturbances by adjusting its sound output to bet ter mask the noise. For some people, the improved sound masking seems to help them sleep better.”

Other tips for better nighttime sleep include:

• Set a regular bed time and stick to it.

• Eliminate caffeine before bed.

• Sleep without the lights or TV on.

• Get plenty of exercise during the day.

3 ways to improve indoor air quality all year long

As winter wears on, it’s not uncommon for people living in cold weather climates to experience some cabin fever. Winter weather confines many people to their homes, making many antsy to get out once the first signs of spring begin to appear.

In addition to contributing to cabin fever, winter weather can have a negative impact on indoor air quality. While air pollution is something most often associated with densely populated cities, the air inside homes is not immune to pollution, especially during long winters when windows are often closed for months at a time. Though open windows in spring and summer can vastly improve indoor air quality, there are ways to ensure that air stays fresh and healthy regardless of which season it happens to be.

1. Clean the floors: Dirty floors are one of the chief contributors to poor indoor air quality. Dust, dirt, pollen, and pet dander can accumulate on floors, leading to poor air quality and potentially aggravating respiratory conditions such as asthma. When vacuuming, use a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which is a uniquely designed mechanical air filter that traps harmful particles such as pollen, pet dander and dust mites. When you finish vacuuming, mop floors to gather any dust or allergens that escaped the vacuum.

2. Control indoor air moisture: Moist air is great for dust mites and mold, both of which are very bad for humans, so do everything you can to maintain healthy levels of indoor air moisture. Dehumidifiers can reduce indoor air moisture and control allergens, but it’s important to take additional steps as

well. When bathing, try to keep a bathroom window open on a slight crack to prevent mold growth. When preparing meals in the kitchen, make use of your exhaust fan. In addition, don’t overwater houseplants, as they can become breeding grounds for mold.

3. Resist synthetic fragrances: A home that smells good tends to feel more pleasant, especially during winter months when windows are closed. But synthetic fragrances, such as those found in detergents and air fresheners, may be providing that welcoming scent at a heavy cost to a home’s inhabitants. Such fragrances may be emitting various chemicals, including volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, into the air, affecting indoor air quality and possibly even human health. When buying laundry products, look for those that are fragrance-free, also choosing home cleaning products that do not include any artificial fragrances.

Indoor air quality tends to suffer in colder months, when windows are closed and doors are open only briefly. But homeowners can take a handful of simple yet effective steps to ensure the air in their homes is healthy all year long.

Mopping after vacuuming can remove any lingering allergens and improve indoor air quality.

Atrial fibrillation is the most common type of arrhythmia, w hich is a problem w ith the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat during w hich the heart can beat too fast, too slow or w ith an irregular rhythm. Atrial fibrillation, or AF, occurs w hen rapid, disorganized electrical signals cause the atria, w hich consists of the heart’s tw o upper chambers, to contract very fast and irregularly. According to the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, w hen a person is suffering from AF, blood begins to pool in his or her atria. W hile that blood pools in the atria, it is not being pumped completely into the heart’s tw o low er chambers, and this prevents the low er and upper chambers from w orking together effectively. Though AF does not alw ays produce noticeable symptoms, some people w ith AF experience chest pain or heart failure, espec ially w hen the heart rhythm is rapid. AF can increase a person’s risk of stroke, and it may surface periodically or become an ongoing problem that lasts for years.

In addition to camp, remember to plan for some free days so children can just enjoy some dow ntime. Such days can break up the monotony of a routine and provide kids and families time to relax together.

Summer recreation may be far off, but it is never too early to start making summer plans, inc luding finding camps and other activities for kids.

Everyday angels - you may live with one, or perhaps you’ve encountered one as you go about your daily life. They’re those special individuals who go out of their way to lend a helping hand; who show they care by their thoughtfulness; who are willing to take a stand for something they believe in; who are always ready to pitch in and get it done, without fanfare or recognition; or who sacrifice for others, whether caring for a loved one, or stopping to help a stranger.

HOW TO DONATE ITEM S INSTEAD OF CASH

Sell older items, then donate the proceeds. That tattered armchair or noisy w ashing machine may not be w orth much to a charity, but you might be able to sell such items by hosting a yard sale or posting them for sale in the new spaper or on an online c lassifieds board. Charities prefer higher quality items, but you might be able to sell older items to your neighbors w ho simply w ant great bargains. If you can sell such items, simply donate the proceeds to your favorite charity. This saves the charity from being saddled w ith w orn dow n items w hile also saving them the resources and efforts needed to refurbish and sell the items themselves.

It takes a Community Imagine a place where children spend time with

positive teen and adult role models, are exposed to theater and art, gain confidence and self-esteem, experience positive peer interactions and make new friends. Imagine different generations coming together to enjoy a hot meal and conversation. Imagine a community coming together to make these programs a reality. Seventeen years ago, church and community members saw a need for programs like these and responded with the LeRoy Christian Community Project.

LCCP’s free After School Program currently supports over 40 children and families from many different walks of life. It is open to children in grades 1-6 and operates Monday-Friday from 3-5 pm. The organization’s Teen Drop-In Center meets from 5-7pm the first Tuesday of the month and is open to teens in grades 7-12. Many of the teens also volunteer with the After School Program.

Over the years, LCCP has expanded to include additional programs:

The Backpack Club is a food assistance program to help families provide meals for their children on weekends. Backpacks are filled with kid-friendly food that children can prepare themselves. Each child in the family receives 2 breakfast items, 2 lunch items, 2 dinner items and snacks. This year the Backpack Club has 25 families (with over 70 children) receiving support.

“Mommy and Me Playgroup” is geared for moms and children aged newborn to kindergarten. The group meets on 1st and 3rd Fridays at the LeRoy Village Fitness for lunch and playtime. An average of 10 moms and 25 kids attend each week.

Caregiver Connection meets the third Tuesday of each month for a time of sharing and support for those who serve as caregiver to a loved one. Topics include Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, grief and loss, financial hardships, dealing with stress, and caring for oneself while being a caregiver.

Grace’s Kitchen is a free meal program offered Tuesday evenings from 5 pm -7 pm at the Masonic Community Center. The program is run by Selby Davis and an amazing crew of volunteers. Each week, Grace’s Kitchen serves an average of 135 meals. It is a great time of food, fun and fellowship.

Summer Day Camp runs Monday - Friday from 8am - 4pm for seven weeks. Each week has a different theme, such as sports, carnival or safari; activities include arts and crafts, games, and field trips. The program is fee based, but fees are kept as

low as possible so that all children can have the opportunity to attend. A local foundation has provided scholarships in the past.

In addition to fundraisers, donations and grants, LCCP is partially funded by local churches. Unfortunately, its programs are in jeopardy, due to a recent loss in grant funding and resulting budget deficit. Led by Executive Director Susan Wakefield and Assistant Director Jana Pritchett, the nonprofit organization launched Lift LCCP, a capital campaign to raise $75,000 to support the programs that they offer to the LeRoy community.

Here are examples of how your tax deductible donation can help: • $100 will sponsor a child in the After School

Program for one month. • $100 will provide dinner for 75 people at

Grace’s Kitchen. • $100 will provide a backpack for a family of

5 for one month.

For more information, or to make a donation online, visit: www.leroychristiancommunityproject.org,

or www.facebook.com/leroylccp. Or contact LCCP at (585) 768-7540,

or via e-mail at [email protected]. Donations may be mailed to at 7 E. Main St., LeRoy, 14482.

On Friday I was at

Walmart in Henrietta. My

friend and I notice a sign for

a special on a mani-pedi. I

said “Should I?” And she

said go for it. First I had my

first Pedicure ever. Kim did a

wonderful job. I felt like a

queen. My friend took

pictures and said to me

“Now that’s off your bucket

list.” I was unaware that one

of the customers asked my

friend what that meant. She

explained that I have cancer

and had never had a

pedicure. Next I had a

wonderful manicure and

had more fun picking out

colors of nail polish. When I

was done the manicurist

said there’d be no charge.

Everyone in there chipped

in to pay for me! I was so

surprised. They also gave

me a $15 gift certificate to

Walmart. What a wonderful

surprise. I’d like to thank

those who were at Regal

Nails at the Henrietta

Walmart!

So you work for this company for 6 years, show up every day, do any job that was asked of you, work nights, weekends, holidays, whenever needed, never have an issue with a fellow employee, have the respect of fellow employees, never an issue with a customer, never do any damage to equipment, told you’re an outstanding employee and amazing work ethic but you get terminated because they’re making changes in 2016. So that’s the American dream? Does everything right and it still doesn’t matter? Thanks guys!!!

We had a party at our home in an east side suburb last night. Guests included members of a local private school football team. As they were leaving, neighbors (who know us well and have our phone number) called the police. When you see these young men in the newspaper being

lauded for their grades and athletic achievements, I hope you are all ashamed of yourselves. Would you have called 911 if they were white? The police officers who responded were thrilled to meet these well-known local athletes. These boys were walking to their cars. And you called the police. Disgusting.

Shame on people who book an appointment with a hair stylist and then fail to show up, or even call to say you can’t keep the appointment. It is more disgraceful when the appointment is for three or more hours. You are stealing money from the stylist, who more than likely is paid on commission, and cannot fill the time with someone else. Have consideration for a person who is working to make a living!

On January 16th about 10am, my brother was in a terrible accident, caused by a station wagon cutting in front of him. Swerving to miss this person, he crashed head on into another car! The person left the scene leaving behind two people who were taken to emergency! If anyone witnessed this accident, please contact Monroe Co. Sheriff’s Dept. This person is a menace to the roads and needs to be caught before someone is killed!

Assess your sleeping conditions. Your bedroom should be cool - between

60 and 67 degrees - and should be dark and quiet. Consider using room-

darkening shades, and make sure to ‘power down’ before you go to sleep.

This means turning off TVs, computers or other sources of blue light that

may hurt your sleep. To help block-out extra noise, consider using a fan or

‘white noise’ machines to help you fall asleep and stay asleep.

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Keith Roach, M.D.

BMI Not a Total Picture of Health DEAR DR. ROACH: About seven years ago, my blood pressure was high, and I was overweight and in a stressful job.

I quit the job, my blood pressure went down, and I lost over 40 pounds. I have kept the weight off all these years. I work part time, standing on my feet about 25 hours a week. My doctor has been happy with me. At my last appointment, I was told my BMI is too high and that I am obese.

Where did this “BMI” come from? I am 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weigh 194 pounds. I am a large-framed woman (I delivered 12- pound babies through NATURAL childbirth!). Now I feel like I should forget it and go back to eating what I want, when I want! -- P.S.

ANSWER: BMI, the body mass index, is a way of determining obesity by standardizing weight for people of different heights. It is equal to weight (in kilograms) divided by height (in meters) squared. BMI predicts the development of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and even overall mortality rates moderately well. It is certainly not a perfect measurement. Someone whose BMI is obese (over 30) might have very little body fat; he or she might be very muscular or have larger bones than another person of the same height.

Some physicians measure waist circumference, since that looks at abdominal fat, and research shows that using both measurements gives a more complete picture of health.

Personally, I congratulate you for getting and keeping off 40 pounds, and think you made a wise investment in your health by finding a less-stressful job. Your BMI is 31, just in the “obese” range. However, women of your BMI but whose waist circumference is less than 31.5 inches (80cm) have a much lower risk of medical complications later.

By the way, having babies that large does indicate an increased risk for Type 2 diabetes later in life. Your doctor hopefully is checking you periodically. Getting regular exercise and eating a good diet reduces your risk for Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, so please don’t get frustrated by this single, incomplete measure of your health.

***

DEAR DR. ROACH: Last night I washed my face with soap and water. I toweled dry and saw blood dripping from the side of my nose. I figured I must have scrubbed too hard and opened a pore. This pore bled and bled for over an hour before I used styptic powder. That stopped the bleeding instantly. Now I’m afraid to wash that area, as it may start bleeding again. I’m 61. I don’t take any medication except a baby aspirin every night, and Aleve when my arthritis kicks up. Is this common? -- J.R.

ANSWER: No, that isn’t common. It makes me concerned that the pore you think is bleeding actually may be a subtle or early skin condition predisposed to bleeding. The ones I am most concerned about are basal cell and squamous cell cancers. See a dermatologist and get it examined.

Aspirin and naproxen (Aleve) do make bleeding more likely, but I still think you should get it looked at.

*** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Readers may email questions to [email protected]. We Care About

Your Smiles by Dr. Steve Sokolovskiy

www.bataviafamilydental.com

A SOLID CHOICE Patients with missing teeth can

choose between dentures, bridges, or implants to fill in the gap(s). While dentures are rel- atively inexpensive, they require removal for cleaning and must be adjusted periodically. A dental bridge is a permanently fixed replacement that is anchored to teeth adjacent to the gap. This affords a more natural feel than dentures, but it necessitates the modification of the anchor teeth (crown removal). Implants, on the other hand, are placed directly in the bone. When the bond between implant and bone is complete, the implant serves as an anchor for replacement teeth or dentures. While implants do cost more, they offer the most natural look and unsurpassed functioning ability.

For expert yet caring dental services, our staff will have your smile looking its best in no time.

At BATAVIA FAMILY DENTAL , we’re currently accepting new patients and welcome your call at 585.343.4246 to schedule an appointment for superior dental care, including dental implants. Perhaps you hide your smile because of spaces from missing teeth. Maybe your dentures don’t feel secure. Perhaps you have difficulty chewing! Dental implants look and feel like your own teeth, and long-term studies continue to show improving success rates for implants. Call us at 6 Batavia City Centre for more information.

P.S. In order for a dental implant to be successful, there must be sufficient bone in the patient’s jaw to accept it.
