I am so proud of our students for many different reasons: their creativity, their maturity, their spirit, their kindness and their passion for life. I am also proud of how hard our students work and this is reflected in the results they achieve. It is particularly evident in our NAPLAN results this year. Not only did we achieve outstanding results this year – our Year 3 results were our best yet – but we also continue to achieve excellent growth! This is a credit to our teachers, students and their families. Below are some highlights: 50% of our students achieved in the top two bands which places us at excelling for NAPLAN. Our growth in reading was 16% above the state and 12% above similar schools. Our growth in writing was 13% above state and 12% above similar school groups. 67.7% of our Year 3 students were in the top two bands for reading. Congratulations to all of our Years 3 and 5 students. I hope all of our students enjoy the break from school and you enjoy some extra time with your families. Thank you again for all of your support this term. I am looking forward to an exciting Term 4 with some very special events. Kind regards, Miss Gould Principal

This square block of land is made up of 3 equal rectangular blocks. The length of the fence around one of these rectangular blocks is 160 metres. What is the size of the square block of land?

If you think you know the answer, please write it down with your solution to be eligible for a mystery prize before our next newsletter is published - students only! ;)Hand to the office with your name and class.

This problem was designed specifically for us by Dr Peter Gould PSM (known to me as dad).

Oatlands Public School Week 10,Term 3 2019

Term 3 Week 10 What is resilience? Resilience enables people to shift back along the mental health continuum towards good mental health. It’s not static but is something that can change over time due to experiences and circumstance.

Resilience is particularly important for children and young people

A child or young person’s ability to be resilient can depend upon many things, particularly their relative balance of risk and protective factors. Depending upon their situation, a child or young person’s resilience may vary. Importantly, specific situations or events that one child or young person may find challenging, another may not.

The transition from being a child to an adolescent to a young adult occurs over a relatively short period of time. Rapid changes in physical, psychological and social development can present numerous challenges. Children and young people who are more resilient are better able to stay on track with the biological, psychological and social demands of growing up and moving through early childhood into adolescence and beyond.

Being resilient is associated with better academic performance and school behaviour and, over the longer term, fewer mental health issues and greater life opportunities (including employment and relationships). Individual resilience (as well as family and community resilience) is something that can be fostered and developed over time.

Characteristics of resilience: A child or young person who is resilient might:

• be optimistic • use positive self-talk for encouragement • have a positive sense of self • identify and express their feelings and thoughts • not hide away from strong feelings • have helpful, age-appropriate strategies to manage their emotions when upset • rearrange their plans to work around an unexpected situation • have a sense of agency or responsibility • keep on trying if something doesn’t work out and use their judgment about when to stop • hold a sense of purpose or hope for the future • actively ask for help if they need it • feel a sense of attachment to family, their learning community and to learning.
