What is obesity?- The large accumulation of body fat, which results in a body mass index (BMI) that is significantly higher than average

- This body fat develops over time as people consume more calories than they expend in energy.

Former Surgeon General C. Everett Koop:

Obesity is the second leading cause of preventable death in the United States(Obesity, Gale Databases)

How many people are obese?- more than one third of the adults in the U.S are obese (thats more than 71 million people) (Obesity, Gale Databases)

- Slightly more women than men are obese in all adult age groups--35.3% of women and 33.3% of men (Obesity, Gale Databases)

What can result from obesity?- joint problems, digestive disorders, poor physical fitness, heart disease, unexplained heart attacks

Obesity can also result in...- arthritis, heartburn, gum disease, high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, emotional and social difficulties, and more.

How to prevent obesityThe Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that youth professionals: Serve fruits and vegetables and other nutritional foods for snacks Be role models by eating healthy foods around childrenMake water convenient to you dailyLimit TV and computer time for childrenEncourage children to be physically active all day, every day
