Our National Anthem

• The Star Spangled Banner was written during the final battle of the War of 1812 by Francis Scott Key.

• What is this song describing?

1Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light2What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?3Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,4O'er the ramparts (fortress walls) we watched were so gallantly streaming?5And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,6Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.7Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave8O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Causes of the War of 1812CAUSE 1:• Under Presidents Adam and

Jefferson, piracy of American ships and the impressment of American soldiers by Britain and France continued to be an unsolved dilemma.

• In 1809, when President James Madison took office, he realized that France and Britain would never stop attacking American ships unless he took drastic (extreme) action.

CAUSE 2:• Madison also suspected that

the British were supplying weapons to the Native Americans living in the Ohio Valley—as the Northwest Ordinance allowed Americans to expand westward to settle that region, Native Americans attacked U.S. settlers using the British weapons.

• Madison knew he needed to put an end to the British supply of weapons to Natives Americans who continued to attack U.S. settlers.

Events of the War of 1812:• Madison decides to abandon

the policy of isolationism and declare war on Britain on July 17, 1812. This began the War of 1812.

• After a series of battles, the powerful leader of the Native tribes, Tecumseh, was killed in battle and this ended the threat of tribal attacks against U.S. settlers in the Ohio Valley.

Events of the War of 1812:• The British troops attacked

Washington, D.C., and destroyed the newly built capital. The war continued on to the final Battle of New Orleans. General Andrew Jackson defended the city with his militia troops and successfully defeated the British army.

• 2,000 British troops were killed in battle, while only 20 Americans lost their lives. This battle launched Andrew Jackson to the status of “national hero.”

• Americans met with the British and signed a peace treaty in 1815, officially ending the War of 1812.
