FOCAL International’s prestigious Annual Awards Gala celebrates its tenth anniversary at the Lancaster London Hotel on May 2, with winners announced in 18 categories across the stock and archive industry spectrum. Hosting what has now become the archive world’s pre-eminent peer poll awards show – in association with AP Archive – will be television history presenter Dan Snow.
FOCAL International announces shortlist for 10th Awards Gala
The climax of the star-studded evening celebrating outstanding usage of library footage will be the presentation of FOCAL International’s Lifetime Achievement Award, which this time goes to Paul Sargent, who retired last year as Head Curator after more than 30 years’ service at The Imperial War Museum, London.
From the Rolling Stones’ unparalleled rock’n roll journey, to the frenzied rise of the British dance club scene and the tragedy of the Central Park Five, the films nominated for this year’s Awards showcase a dazzling array of production styles, subject matter, storytelling prowess and, of course, masterful integration of outstanding stock and archival footage.
USA tops nominationsIn its tenth year, the Awards have attracted a record 224 submissions, “so the juries have had an agonising time deciding on their shortlist of three in each category,” said Julie Lewis, organiser of the Awards and FOCAL International’s General Manager. In all, 10 countries are represented in the final nominations, with USA getting 13 nominations, including two from American Experience, and totally dominating the category Best use of Footage in a Production Featuring Music category, usually the preserve of the BBC Music Entertainment department. A full list of all 224 submissions, synopses, and credits can be viewed on the FOCAL website now.

“Our shortlist represents some of the most exciting films made last year,” said Jerry Kuehl, lead juror, “wherein the narrative impact of stock and archival footage is vital to the success of the production. Our judges have really had a tough time this year but when you end up with both Crossfire Hurricane and Under African Skies, for example in one category, on two of the biggest names in rock music, the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon – it’ll be an interesting night!”
Restoration Conference – and a new Award
In addition to awards recognising achievement in a wide variety of production categories, awards for restorations of the world’s film and video archive heritage are also up for grabs, as are commendations for the skilled researchers, archivists, libraries. Following on from the What Is Restoration? Conference, supported by the British Film Institute (BFI), to be held earlier in the day, Grover Crisp, Sony Pictures EVP will receive a new award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Film Restoration and Preservation’. For full details of the Conference schedule and registrations, go to the FOCAL International website.
